Teen dies after being shot with Taser gun by Collier County deputies

Hernandez's relatives say he was badly beaten.

A teenager died after he was zapped with a Taser gun and doused with a substance similar to pepper spray during a fight with Collier County sheriff's deputies, officials said. Christopher Hernandez, 19, of Fort Myers, was the third suspect to die in Florida this month after being subdued with a Taser gun. Hernandez died Tuesday, several hours after officials say he attacked deputies, kicking and ripping their uniforms. He ignored orders to stop. Hernandez, who had no local criminal record, was taken for treatment at Naples Community Hospital for a cut above his eye, but Collier County sheriff's spokesman Dennis Huff said there had been no indication that Hernandez' wounds were life-threatening. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.

But Hernandez's relatives say he was badly beaten. They said that when they saw him at the emergency room his head was swollen, his eyes were ``blood red'' and his arms and face had road rash. Blood from somewhere on his head stained the hospital pillow.

Miami Police Use Taser To Subdue Wheelchair-Bound Man

Miami police say they used a Taser stun gun to subdue a wheelchair-bound man who threatened them with scissors. Police say they responded to a domestic violence all at a home where the man got into an argument with his girlfriend, then threw a soda can at her 13-year-old daughter. Police say the man resisted officers and threatened them. The man's name was not released. He was taken to jail, but no charges were immediately filed.

Officer's injury tied to Taser

Arizona Republic

12/26/04

The makers of Taser electric stun guns say their claims of safety are backed by more than 100,000 police officers who have been shocked during training sessions without suffering a single serious injury. But a doctor working for Taser says a one-second burst from the stun gun was responsible for fracturing the back of a Maricopa County sheriff's deputy in 2002. The doctor, in a memo obtained by The Arizona Republic, tells Taser that he evaluated former Deputy Samuel Powers and found the officer 'sustained a T7 compression fracture as the result of the Taser incident.' Powers was the first person to file a product liability lawsuit against Scottsdale's Taser International, claiming that the shock during a mandatory training exercise forced him into medical retirement and has left him suffering permanent injuries. He has been joined by other police officers around the country who are coming forward with lawsuits and complaints about injuries they attribute to being shocked with a Taser...

TASERs, Torture and Death in the Police State

“TASERs, Torture and Death in the Police State,” or “It’s All About the Money”

They have been used against unruly schoolchildren, mentally disturbed patients, intoxicated individuals; unarmed suspects in misdemeanor crimes and people who simply fail to comply immediately with a “command."

Bernard Kerik, President Bush's first choice to lead the Homeland Security Department, exercised stock options of $6.2 million he received from Taser International, which sold stun guns to the department - and seeks more business with it. It’s all about the money. Maybe the rush to get the newest technology on the streets is outpacing the ability of public officials to put in place the safeguards necessary to protect the public. Maybe it’s all about the money. The public, who is paying for these items, is being told that TASERs will be used as a safe, non-lethal alternative to guns. But in reality, they are being used in situations where police would never use lethal force. In fact, according to Amnesty International, the data shows that TASERs are used on unarmed suspects in 80% of the cases, including verbal non-compliance (36%), and only 3% of the time in cases involving potential “deadly assault". Their report details 74 TASER-related deaths that have occurred in the United States and Canada since June 2001. Amnesty International USA will also release information documenting more than 80 TASER-related deaths since 1999. More shocking is the fact that more than 60 percent of these deaths have happened in the last year, from November 2003 to November 2004.

TASERs have become the most prevalent enforcement tool in some departments. They have been used against unruly schoolchildren, mentally disturbed patients, intoxicated individuals; unarmed suspects in misdemeanor crimes and people who simply fail to comply immediately with a “command."

Taser stands by stock options given to Kerik

Taser International Inc. officials Wednesday defended the stock options granted to board of directors member Bernard Kerik, whose rise and fall were meteoric following his nomination by President Bush as head of the Department of Homeland Security. Kerik later withdrew his name from consideration for the post, saying that a woman who had worked for him as a nanny may have been an illegal immigrant. But the fact that Kerik cashed in more than $5.8 million as the result of his Nov. 11 sale of Taser stock also raised eyebrows.

"Mr. Kerik joined the Board of Directors in May 2002 and was granted a standard board package of stock options and cash compensation for new directors. His subsequent stock option grants were similar to other outside board members. The grant of his stock options and his stock option exercises and subsequent stock sales have complied with all SEC regulations and NASDAQ requirements," said Phillips W. Smith, Taser's chairman of the board.

TASERs, torture and death in the police state

50,000 volts for your thoughts

by Shawn Macomber

The American Spectator

12/23/04

A Taser looks something like a gun, but is in reality a non-lethal weapon that delivers 50,000 volts of electricity, which completely incapacitates suspects. Certainly, it cannot be suggested that police are misusing these weapons in every instance, or that Florida police are the only offenders, but since the introduction of Tasers barely a year ago use-of-force reports have gone through the roof in the Sunshine State. Reports show Tasers being routinely and, often dubiously, used on children, the mentally ill, fleeing suspects, as well as cuffed suspects and -- yes, further -- cuffed suspects locked in the back of police cruisers.
