Why are Niagara's bees dying?

Today's Toronto Star story about huge loses of bees in the Niagara region is attached.

Why are Niagara's bees dying?

TheStar.com - Business - Why are Niagara's bees dying? Experts called in to probe mysterious, costly threat to region's fruit industry April 17, 2007 dana flavelle business reporter

The sudden unexplained loss of millions of bees in the Niagara region – up to 90 per cent in some commercial colonies – has prompted Ontario beekeepers to ask experts at the University of Guelph to investigate.

The move comes amid the mysterious disappearance of millions of bees in the U.S., in a phenomenon so unusual that it has spawned a new phrase – "Colony Collapse Disorder."

In Canada, the problem seems to be confined so far to the Niagara region but is still early days for beekeepers in the West, who won't know the extent of the damage until they unwrap their hives later this month.

"About 80 or 90 per cent of the beekeepers in the Niagara region have had substantial losses," George Dubanow, president of the Niagara Beekeepers Association, said in an interview yesterday.

"This number is unparalleled. A typical winter loss is between 10 and 20 per cent."

That has some Niagara region fruit growers worried in the weeks leading up to the May pollination period because bees don't just make honey. They also play a vital role in pollinating everything from cherries to pear trees in Ontario, hybrid canola in Western Canada and blueberries in New Brunswick.

As much as a third of the food we eat requires bee pollination, according to experts. Bee pollination is valued at $1 billion in Canada.

Theories about why the bees are dying run the gamut from pesticides to poor weather and even radio waves from cell phone transmission towers.

Experts in Canada are reluctant to blame "Colony Collapse Disorder" for what's happened so far in Niagara.

"At this point we haven't seen the type of die-offs we're seeing in the U.S. although we're all certainly very concerned about it, said Steve Pernal, a research scientist with Agriculture and Agri-food Canada, in northern Alberta.

Officials in Ontario blame poor weather conditions last fall and the Varroa Destructor mite, a deadly parasite that first showed up in the early '90s.

"The reason I say that is you can almost draw a line from St. Thomas to the south side of Hamilton. Below that they've lost 70 per cent of their bees with some individuals losing 100 per cent. North of that line, thank goodness, the bees are quite normal," explained Doug McRory, an apiarist with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food.

Winter die-offs aren't unusual for beekeepers. And while 20 per cent is the average, sometimes an individual beekeeper's losses will be much higher, experts said.

However, the U.S. has now received reports from 24 states citing widespread losses. And more worrisome is the unexplained disappearance of the adult bees, a report to Congress two weeks ago stated.

It's as if the bees flew away and never came back, highly uncharacteristic behaviour, the report by U.S. agriculture analyst Renee Johnson said.

"The odds are some neurotoxin is what's causing it," said David VanderDussen, a beekeeper in Frankford, near Trenton, whose company NOD Apiary Products Ltd. recently won a provincial award for developing an environmentally friendly mite repellent.

Len Troup, a fruit grower in Jordan Station who also chairs the Ontario Tender Fruit Producers, says farmers in the area starting renting commercial bees to pollinate the cherry and pear crops, starting around mid-May.

Niagara beekeepers say the problem in the U.S. is driving up the price of Queen Bees imported from New Zealand to replenish the hives.

Protests block mast upgrade

By Craig Manning

PLACARD: Youngsters joined the residents' protest on Sunday

PROTESTERS have blocked attempts to upgrade a controversial phone mast sited in the tower of a Wirral church.

When engineers from telephone giant Orange turned up at Manor Church in Liscard early on Sunday morning to replace the 2G Antenna with an even stronger 3G mast they were met by a crowd of more than 40 nearby residents who blocked their path. Three hours later the workers left without being able to erect the mast.

Dr Tom Bolton from Manor Egremont Mast Action Group, who have been opposed to the mast since it was installed in 2005 organised Sunday's protest. He told the Globe: "We would like to thank our local police for their presence and the excellent way they conducted the policing of this peaceful protest.

"We were shocked by reports from attendees of increases of people who have suddenly become ill with cancers since the installation of the 2G hidden in the church tower and transmitting since early 2006."

The mast was built in October, 2005, but many nearby residents were unaware of the situation. Despite many meetings and a petition containing thousands of signatures Orange have refused to remove the mast.

"We were shocked by reports of increases of people who have suddenly become ill with cancers since the installation of the 2G hidden in the church tower."
Dr Tom Bolton

Dr Bolton added: "Orange say there is no proof that these masts cause ill health even though there are hundreds of scientists and experts worldwide now convinced that they are a hazard when placed in highly populated areas.

"Also there are many thousands of reports worldwide from people living close by these masts of increases in cancers and other life threatening diseases."

Conservative councillor Leah Fraser, who was among the protestors said: "If Orange, or any other mobile phone company, want to get one over us, they'll have to get up earlier. They have learned nothing from the last 18 months.

"Our peaceful protest outside the church, supported by 40 local people, is a very clear signal to Orange that this is not a suitable location for such a high-powered mast.

"It is a densely-populated residential area and they have failed, time and time again, to look at more suitable alternatives.

"Dr Bolton is to be congratulated for his vigilance and I would urge Orange, to be a bit more open."

Dear Ms. Janz: I am very sorry to learn about your reoccurence of breast cancer as well as your initial diagnosis!!!

You may be very instrumental in regard to sorting out potential EMF/EMR-related toxic exposure re breast cancer, Leukemia and other cancers as well as diseases such as Alzheimers, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's and more!!!

I have been a non-accredited EMF/EMR researcher for over 15 years. My work focuses on childhood Leukemia and lately has included Alzheimers as main focus regarding attempts to "get-the-word-out" regarding increasing EMF/EMR pollution. I research studies re all health problems tho....

I realize you are undergoing treatments so please don't worry about responding until you have a chance and are not suffering the additional effects of chemotherapy and possibly radiation.

However, it is imperative that you move anything electrical away from close proximity to your bed. I spoke to my brother the other day and he informed me that his wife, also a breast cancer victim/survivor, has been using a heating pad for quite some time due to various chronic pain.

Any electric clock, noise machine, air purifier, monitor, small fan close to bed, power supply box for cordless phone, sleeping against wall opposite an electric or gas meter, improper wiring beside or behind head of bed, currents on waterpipes going across bedroom/bed area and/or under the floor of one's bed, as well as metal headboard may all be involved in the aging process contributing to inflammation that eventually leads to cancer.

You may be surprised to learn that the American Cancer Society sent me an article from "USA Today" back in 1993 that recommends moving electrical items away from beds. MONEY is the reason they and other charities do not announce this vital information that may prevent health problems all the way from poor sleep to cancer!!!! You will note there is very little interest in PREVENTION, but rather, most organizations focus on TREATMENT. This is because "big pharma" pays everyone off and governmental officials are "invited to the party!!!"

I interact on a regular basis with the top EMF scientist in the world, Assoc. Prof. Olle Johansson, Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. We are co-writing a book titled "Inflammation and EMF/EMR."

The most important appeal I have made lately was addressed to a member of the new Alzheimers' Task Force and can be located by clicking on: http://freepage.twoday.net/stories/3038870/

There is a correlation between development of Alzheimers and Leukemia. I think I mentioned that in my letter to Ms. Albert.

When you feel up to it, please let me know what, if any, electrical items you may have close to your bed/body. I strongly recommend you move any such items at least across the room. The article sent to me by the American Cancer Society suggests using a battery-operated clock. Any size or type of clock is a concern regardless of what you may read elsewhere until Assoc. Prof. Olle Johansson and his colleagues obtain funding to sort out possible differences re harmful aspects, etc. Many persons are appealing for such funding and several appeals were sent to the London Charity, "Children With Leukaemia."

Children With Leukaemia began as a charity with help from Princess Diana after she heard about the O'Gorman's tragic losses of their son to Leukemia and their daughter to breast cancer. They suspect some sort of transformer in their backyard as the cause. In spite of all of this, when I attended the First International Children With Leukaemia Conference in London in September of 2004, the only EMF press release that was released was one by Dr. Russel Reiter, University of Texas/San Antonio re "Light at Night May Cause Cancer.!!!"

After you read my appeal to Ms. Albert, you will know more about why I was so extremely upset both at the conference and upon my return to the states. Your willingness to share any information re possible EMF exposures, particularly at night (cellular antennae and high voltage powerlines also are major concerns re chronic, nightime exposures) will hopefully help, along with others who have reported EMF exposures or other toxic problems such as contaminated water, etc., toward forcing the release of information to the public.

Eileen O'Connor, another lovely person like you, has been a breast cancer survivor for several years now. She is fighting hard for the EMF cause. She believes it was cellular antennae close to her home that triggered her cancer. While that may be true, I am very concerned about the fact she had a metal headboard on her bed. EMF/EMR, whether from cell towers, powerlines or appliances, are likely to be inducing currents on metal mattress springs, frames and metal headboards. I say "likely too" because I have very little expertise in regard to the technology but rather, base my concerns on personal experiences. These sources produce waveforms/abnormal currents/frequencies that are "out-of-sync" with our bodies. Our bodies "are electrical." There is an important book by Dr. Robert Becker titled "The Body Electric." [ http://omega.twoday.net/stories/3500280/ ]

Robert Riedlinger, a wonderful gentleman from near the Vancouver area of British Columbia (sorry I am rushing and don't recall but do know you most likely in that area also). He wrote that he will try and phone you and probably will also send you some information via email. Robert suffered numerous problems that he relates strongly to cellular antennae exposures. He does a great job as a very hard-working advocate on behalf of EMF suffers everywhere.

I will pray that your treatment is successful!!! Your generosity in donating your beautiful hair -- caring for others in spite of your own suffering -- is commendable!!! Your public speaking while raising a family is undoubtedly making a huge contribution to the cause of breast cancer and is most likely helping others recognize the need for early intervention. Best wishes for successful and full recovery!!! Joanne

Tree deformities found near EMF

I have been doing some basic investigations in the area regarding microwave towers and high tension power lines. I am documenting my findings on paper and with photograph. Mostly I am focusing on plants and trees reactions to EMF. My findings so far are pretty conclusive.

For example there is a fantastic commons area with even spaced spruce trees growing under a high tension power line system about a mile from my home. Even with casual observation it isn't hard to see that the trees growth is being changed. The trees all have a deficit in growth on the sides facing the EMF field. I have photographs of this I will be posting in a couple days that show just what I am saying. It isn't wind since regardless of placement the trees are showing this. It isn't trimming, as the trees are only 5-15 feet tall, not to the point the utility company would prune them by a longshot.

Second thing I have noticed, often I am finding trees dying or defaced that are facing microwave towers. Anyway, pictures soon. So what does it tell us when natures own is severely stunted, and scrambling to avoid exposure the best they can? Grow levels on the far sides of the tree are significantly better than the ones within closer proximity of the EMF field.

See attached file please. Consider this a preliminary report:

Are mobile phones wiping out our bees?
http://omega.twoday.net/stories/3584203/

Social psychologists have shown that it is easier for people to harm other people when they do so under the orders of an authority figure - and further if done so indirectly and incrementally. When you add in the unconscious elements of conformity (everyone else is doing it so it must be OK), convenience, selfishness, greed, and denial, well you naturally have the ingredients for a disaster.

As some of you may know, I moved to a tiny relatively technology free area recently. We have many bees and so many birds of so many kinds, especially the smaller birds like the blue tips and sparrows, robins, wrens etc. I wake to a massive chorus of the birds at around 5am every morning. It is so loud and magnificent that my heart bursts with the joy of it and I rise happily to start my day. The bees buzz around all day and the sound makes me smile just to know they are safe here.

The people living in this area are relaxed and friendly and there is a "feel good" factor that I had forgotten. Yet this space is only about half a mile x half a mile and a TETRA line runs through some of it from the Isle of Wight several miles away! This line of emissions is about 6ft wide with another harmonic addition about 6 mtrs away.

I have to do the TETRA run everyday because it runs at the top of my road, which is a cul-de-sac! However since my home where I sleep is emission free I get only mild effects. So the key to all this is to sleep in an emission free place - or protect it so that it is emission free.

If only we could do that for all human, animal and plant life to spare all this pain, illness and destruction. No amount of money is worth even one life.

Thank you for your information.

I already knew the links which you refer to. At this time it is important to get pictures of trees with barkbulbs as you can see on my site

http://www.boomaantastingen.nl/ (also in english)

Can you look at your town and take pictures for me. Please give me the name of the town and if you can the name of the tree.

It is important that I can proof that this phenomenon can be found at trees all over Europe.

Plan to check mobile tower hazards

By Our Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD, April 2: The government on Monday decided to relocate and redesign more than 300 of the 10,000 telecommunication towers atop buildings in residential areas where they are considered to be a health hazard.

This was announced at a press conference held here in which the Ministry of Information Technology issued a policy to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) for establishing guidelines for mitigating environmental and health-related effects of cellular-based station antennae and to address public concerns about radiation hazards of the infrastructure.

Minister IT Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari announced issuance of the policy.

He said that a detailed study had been conducted by the IT Ministry to look into the seriousness of the matter, and added that radiation hazards from the base stations were thoroughly analyzed in the light of the recommendations of ANSI/IEEE and the International Council for Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP).

The report was also circulated to the Ministries of Health and Environment, PTA and industry stakeholders for their comments.

The study had concluded that a bulk of medical research material was available on health-related effects of electromagnetic radiation emitted from antennae on telecommunication towers. Yet no conclusive evidence of hazards to human health had been established for possible exposure levels from the cellular towers, he stated.

Nonetheless, the minister did not rule out the possibility of negative impacts to human health of installing telecommunication towers in residential areas which could lead to serious diseases like cancer or leukemia.

Director Wireless MoIT Mudassar Hussain said: "Only if a human being comes directly in front of an antenna-radiating surface (not the tower) within eight meters (25 feet) can there be a possibility of exposure to radiation levels detrimental to human health."

He said: "Random research indicates probability of some negative effects on humans in front of the antenna."

Leukemia fears spread

http://regulus2.azstarnet.com/comments/index.php?id=177343

Dear Olle: Yet another "very tragic story" about Leukemia cluster (other cancers also reported):

I understand from my brother who knows one of the cancer victim's wife in Sierra Vista, that there is radar -- he said "by a mountain," that is being used to detect low-flying airplanes that are being used for drug-smuggling out of Mexico. Apparently the radar belongs to the Border Patrol.

My brother also mentioned the Libby Army Airfield on Fort Huachuca (mentioned in the forwarded article), which is at the edge of Sierra Vista. Obviously, the air field would have its own radar.

The following paragraph reminds me a lot of the EMF rhetoric:

"The U.S. military has denied JP-8's toxicity since a 2001 study — funded by the Department of Defense — concluded that exposed workers at Air Force bases suffered no negative effects from it. However, critics have called that study invalid, saying the two-year time frame is not long enough to determine the fuel's effects on human health......."

I am in touch with family members and, as usual, have a number of questions re additional EMF/EMR exposures that most likely are compounding the adverse effects of benzene and adding to adverse effects of the radar installations not to mention celluar antennae in the area.

I am very interested to learn whether many of the homes were built around the same time period and therefor may have electric or gas meters mounted on bedroom walls. Also, hopefully I will be able to come up with more information as to electric appliance and telephone equipment usage close to beds.

My purpose is never intended to "downplay" any potential hazards, just that there are "way too many mysteries" even if one dismisses the cover-ups, minimizations and denials.

I did not miss the fact that one of the mom's of a Leukemia victim (now "a survivor") is working toward, or already has her degree in Epidemiology. She is one of the persons I wrote to yesterday. Take care - Joanne

More Photos (2): Did you know … The childhood leukemia cluster now plaguing Sierra Vista was first recognized in January 2001, when a Tucson mother of a child getting leukemia treatment at University Medical Center noticed an unusual number of Sierra Vista families also there with sick children. She asked the children's UMC oncologist, Dr. John Hutter, now retired, about it, and they notified the Arizona Department of Health Services of their concerns. By September of that year, the health department confirmed that the number of pediatric leukemia cases in Sierra Vista dating to 1997 was indeed high enough to be declared a "cluster" — an outbreak significantly above the expected rate for a city that size. Sierra Vista's deadly enemy Leukemia fears spread Death of stricken kids' dad is family's latest, cruelest blow, heightening alarm that outbreak is snaring adults, too By Carla McClain ARIZONA DAILY STAR Tucson, Arizona | Published: 04.07.2007 advertisement SIERRA VISTA — After a futile federal probe of the childhood leukemia cluster in Sierra Vista, fear of the disease is growing, not waning, prompting a new state study to find out if adults here are also suffering unusually high rates. Reports that leukemia — and other cancers — have sickened many Sierra Vista adults in recent years have long shadowed the abnormally high rates verified among the city's stricken children. The recent, stunning leukemia-related death of the father of two of those children — Dale Durkit — has only heightened the fear affecting this military town of 40,000 in Southeastern Arizona. "This came out of nowhere," said his wife, Kelley Durkit, after burying her husband last month. "He was a huge, healthy man — one day he's healthy, the next day he's dead. This doesn't make any sense. You have to believe in God or you go crazy. "This is phenomenal — every time you talk to someone, there is cancer, in the family, in someone they know. It's not just leukemia. There is cancer running through this town. It's just everywhere." Dale Durkit, 37, died at University Medical Center on March 10, just days after learning he had the same leukemia that has plagued two of his daughters. He apparently died of an infection, which he had been fighting before the leukemia diagnosis, that overwhelmed his body after he started chemotherapy. That's a risk of the treatment, said Dr. Andrew Yeager, director of UMC's blood and bone-marrow transplant program. No family has been more devastated by the Sierra Vista leukemia outbreak of the past decade than the Durkits. Dale Durkit's oldest daughter, Kellie, 13, is recovering from a recent bone-marrow transplant for her leukemia. The child of an earlier marriage, Kellie's case is "linked" to the Sierra Vista leukemia cluster because she frequently visited her father and grandparents there, while living with her mother in Phoenix. But Durkit's next daughter, Jessica, now 8, is part of the official cluster that now tallies at least 12 children — the most recent confirmed last month — and six more closely tied to it. If you count only the official 12 cases, that is at least three times the rate of childhood leukemia expected in a city the size of Sierra Vista in this time period. Stricken with leukemia in 2001, when she was 2, Jessica is in complete remission but suffering badly now from the sudden loss of her father. "They called him 'dimple-Dale,' you know," said this beautiful little girl with the family's trademark sky-blue eyes, as she pointed to her cheeks, the site of her daddy's fine dimples. When her mother, Kelley, said the family was trying to somehow accept Dale's death, Jessica looked up sharply from her coloring book in her Sierra Vista home and shook her head. "No, no, no," she said, in a whisper. Her 10-year old brother, Cody, and her little sister, Chelsie, 5, just bowed their heads. "Daddy's up there in heaven. He's building us a house," Chelsie said, adding, "I'm his 'little Boo.' " Wearing pink metal hearts inscribed "Daddy, we love you," the little girls were sitting on the living-room floor, below a montage of photos of Dale the children had pinned on the wall. Alongside the pictures, they had written a Bible verse from the book of Matthew: "If you have faith in a grain of mustard … nothing shall be impossible to you." When Jessica got sick — just as alarming evidence of the leukemia cluster was emerging in Sierra Vista — the Durkits were living in the flight path of the 300-plus military aircraft that fly out of Libby Army Airfield on Fort Huachuca every day. "We lived right where the jets turned around — that's when the big black cloud of jet fuel exhaust shoots out," said Kelley. "We were always so uncomfortable about that." Until the day he died, Dale Durkit remained convinced jet-fuel exposure is the prime cause of Sierra Vista's leukemia cluster. The only proven cause of leukemia — the toxic chemical benzene — is the major ingredient in military jet fuel, especially in its newest form, known as JP-8, which the military began using in the late 1990s. That jibes with the onset of Sierra Vista's childhood leukemia cluster and an even bigger one in Fallon, Nev., home of the U.S. Navy's "Top Gun" jet fighter training facility, Dale Durkit continually pointed out. He remained unswayed by unverified, small-scale tests done independently by two University of Arizona researchers showing high levels of some heavy metals — most notably tungsten — in the air in Fallon and in some spots in Sierra Vista. "Tungsten doesn't make sense. Tungsten has always been around, so people would have been getting sick long ago. I don't buy it," Durkit said as recently as November. "But they started using JP-8 only a few years ago, and that new formula turns benzene into a monster. There's your smoking gun." The U.S. military has denied JP-8's toxicity since a 2001 study — funded by the Department of Defense — concluded that exposed workers at Air Force bases suffered no negative effects from it. However, critics have called that study invalid, saying the two-year time frame is not long enough to determine the fuel's effects on human health. So Durkit was not at all surprised when federal investigators from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention failed to find any clues — much less a cause — of Sierra Vista's leukemia, after analyzing bio-samples from the city's sick and healthy children. He declined to allow his children to be tested in that probe, after the CDC also came up empty in Fallon — the site of what is likely the largest cancer cluster in U.S. history. In disgust and frightened for his children — if not himself — Durkit called the CDC the "Cluster Denial Coalition." Scientists have long theorized that some people are genetically predisposed to developing leukemia, but that it takes exposure to environmental toxins to trigger the disease. After Jessica's illness, the Durkits moved 12 miles southeast of the city, out of the jet flight path, trying to get out of harm's way. But they still don't feel safe, Kelley Durkit said. "The kids always seem to be sick — a lot of bleeding noses, coughs. This just isn't a healthy place to live," she said. Although she and Dale were making plans to leave before he died, she won't go now. "Everything here is Dale," she said, gesturing to the pond he built in their yard for the children, to their toys and playhouse. She struggled unsuccessfully to talk about him without tears. "I still wait for his phone call every single day at 11:30. … He was my rock. He was my everything. I can't leave him now." But it is not hard to understand the deep fear she lives with, of this monster that comes out of nowhere to strike those she loves, one after another. Just before leukemia struck Dale, it killed one of his colleagues at work. Stories like that are everywhere in Sierra Vista. It is why the medical director of the Arizona Cancer Registry at the state health department, Dr. Tim Flood, has responded to pleas from the people of this city to find out if adults are also part of the leukemia problem here. The results of his analysis, under way now, are expected at the end of this month. "We're going to look at leukemia in this area in all ages. But those numbers will be mostly adults, because leukemia is much more common in adults," Flood said. He admits he will have only the numbers — and not the answers — if the rates turn out unusually high. "That's the biggest challenge," he said. "We still don't know what to look for." Even so, those who are convinced leukemia is stalking this entire city, and not just its children, applaud the state's action. "They try to eliminate so much when they do these studies, it's definitely good to see them widening the investigation," said longtime Sierra Vista resident Sue Ivory, one of those who has continually sounded the alarm about afflicted adults. Three years ago she was helping organize a bone-marrow drive for Susan Taylor, the 10th Sierra Vista child hit by leukemia, who later died. Ivory was stunned then by how many adults came forward, saying they, too, had the disease or knew someone who did. "Anyone you talk to down here knows someone who has this — we've been aware of it for years," she said. "I am certain cancer rates here are high across the board. "This is killing kids and it's killing adults."?

Re: Leukemia....Sierra Vista, AZ...4/07....

Joanne,

I saw this in today's Arizona Star, too. It is about time that this cluster got the public health attention it deserves. I know this mother you refer to but she cannot do it alone and needs our help. I have been following this for a few years now and think the military needs to be more accountable to the public health community about the growing recognition that environmental factors such as radio frequency, jet fuel and tungstun may be contributing to these health problems in Sierra Vista and Fallon. Both towns now are living in a climate of fear and that is another public health problem. Does every nail of certainty have to be pounded into the ground to establish these residents may be surviving there under preventable but now life threatening condition?

Thank you for forwarding this article, which I read to be a strong call to action by public health officials in the states of Arizona and Nevada and federally.

Re: FW: Leukemia....Sierra Vista, AZ...4/07....

I think the polution from the planes and electromagnetism are a very bad combination. As the blood brain and other barriers are opened with the radar and phone masts this will allow the toxins from the planes to enter the brain ect. THE ARE USING A BANNED PESTICIDE IN THE FUEL, IF THE INFORMATION I WAS SENT IS TRUE.
