Urgent Action needed re Harrogate 3 Schools Mast

Urgent action needed re harrogate 3 schools mast - please contact your mp now

If the Secretary of State does not appeal, the Harrogate decision health concerns may not be considered in planning applications for mobile phone mast for decades. He has until the ?9th ? 10th december to change his mind

Please write /e-mail /fax/telephone John Prescott NOW if you think he should appeal the decision..

I am attaching a standard letter which I am circulating please feel free to copy and distribute -- altering in any way which you feel appropriate.

Please send copies and ring /write to your mps now we have less than one week.

I rang the ODPM and was told they cant decide what to do as the judgement has not yet been published-- it may be published after the deadline for appeals!

If you are concerned about the health effects of mobile phone masts and want the right to have these concerns considered when a mast is applied for by your childrens school you need to act now!!

If not the battle for our children protection at school and at home may be over for a long time-- this will affect EVERY mast application which follows.

Dear Mr Prescott

I am writing to demand that the Secretary of State appeals the decision made by the court of appeal in the case of the Harrogate Mast /Three Schools case.

The issue as to whether ICNIRP certification should be enough to reassure the community of safety of mast emissions was not in my opinion properly considered.

The ICNIRP limits relate only to the heating effects of the mast and do not address the non thermal effects which concern many communities living around masts. It also only relates the immediate effects, and not the long term or biological effects on those continuously exposed.

This is particularly relevant in relation to exposure of Children, as their skulls are less protective against this form of radiation

The Stewart Report recommended adoption of the precautionary principle specifically because insufficient evidence of safety of non thermal effects was available at the time to establish a safe lower limit of exposure.

Increasing evidence from epidemiological studies and controlled laboratory studies in Europe suggests that there are significant non-thermal adverse effects at very much lower levels of exposure than the ICNIRP guidelines.

The Secretary of State has a responsibility not only to the children of Harrogate but to all the children in the UK who will be affected by the court’s decision, which in effect disenfranchises parents from decisions which affect the health and wellbeing of their children.

The court’s decision misrepresents ICNIRP as guidelines which consider all health risks, when they only address the easily quantifiable thermal short term non biological effects.

If this government is to retain ANY credibility in relation to its independence of influence from the multinational phone operators, the Secretary of State must challenge the appeal court decision rigorously and effectively.

The issues are quite straightforward either the Secretary of State

· will not appeal and in so doing will chose to support these multinationals right to ride roughshod over the well informed concerns of ordinary people

or

· he will appeal the decision to enable the health concerns of parents to be properly addressed in relation to the siting of mobile phone masts close to schools.

If the Secretary of State does not appeal the court’s decision it is clear that this government is not able to protect our democracy or our children.

Yours truly,

Spain fights Antennas

Companies says that Europeans dont fear antennas...so why the Spanish do? They lie, Euroepans fear antennas, they have better laws less permissive. Here in Spain children died at schools in silence.

Please, fight against them: Sprying walls, at Internet, everywhere.

Fake tree dubbed Frankenpine

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Modern technology could alter a pristine Adirondack landscape that's captivated artists for more than a century.

Nextel Partners is proposing a 35-metre tower to provide cellular phone service for its customers along the eastern part of Lake George, including an area known as the Million Dollar Beach.

The tower would be painted brown, with fake branches attached to camouflage it as a white pine, even though it would be nine metres taller than any surrounding tree.

"We think this will be very unobtrusive," said Michael Rapp of Nextel, based in Kirkland, Wash. "The mountain continues to climb up and it will blend into that background."

But critics are dubbing the faux tree "Frankenpine." The tower would soar from a forested peninsula known as Pilot Knob in the town of Fort Ann up Buck Mountain, a subject painted by Georgia O'Keefe and others in works hanging in galleries from Manhattan to Washington, D.C.

"Placing a steel and plastic cell tower above the tops of every tree in the forest on Pilot Knob would be like painting a beard and moustache on the Mona Lisa," said Brian Houseal of the Adirondack Council, an environmental group. "The landscape around Pilot Knob is an American icon."

Hearings are being held on the matter and authorities won't vote on it before September.

Essex EHS study

Everyone who this email reaches: do pass this on to your local circulation lists.

I feel this is important for us all, and for all those who have the headaches, sleeplessness, skin problems, nosebleeds, depression or whatever.

Today I visited Essex for the grand opening of their EMF laboratory by Sir William Stewart. I found it stimulating to talk to some key figures and directly with the research team, but I am tired, so if you are a recipient who was also there and can add, or comment further, please do, and send it back through the network. This is my personal impression.

The Essex team won the MTHR contract and its extension in fair competition, based on their proposed methodology of simulated GSM and UMTS signals in an isolated environment under double blind conditions. We can still question the methodology (I do!) but the setup is indeed professional, the test signals appear to be well designed; and with different exposure scenarios would be indeed more valid. If we can encourage extra funding beyond this study, I do believe they are open to improvements in sophistication of their exposure regime (called provocations: can you deliberately create a physical response, such as is caused in the real world?), would include TETRA and more complex environments.

They recognise as we do, that in the case of electro-sensitive people (I contest "hypersensitive" until two levels have been demonstrated), unless double-blind provocations are demonstrated, we will be forever designated misguided or psychosomatic. Can we help them get it right?

I still feel it is best to have this dialogue, be involved, and indeed openly critical as necessary. Rod Read (ES-UK) is similar in his criticisms, as is Alasdair Philips who helped get their questionnaire sorted out, and others. If we do not get involved, psychologists will behave as psychologists do. Let's face it, we can't expect them to understand what it is like to be affected by masts (I don't believe any of the team is e-sensitive). But nor do I think they are actually starting with the presumption that this is psychosomatic. The more objective, critical, well-considered and thoughtful information we can supply them with the better. They have our critiques already (part one of mine is MailScanner has detected a possible fraud attempt from ""claiming to be http://www.tetrawatch.net/science/research_models.pdf ) and the RALF unpublished submissions from ES people in Sweden (the "missing report" currently on MailScanner has detected a possible fraud attempt from "" claiming to be http://www.feb.se/index_int.htm ).

I put it to several of the researchers, including Elaine Fox, that being a psychology dept. Is a real barrier to getting genuine participants: why psychology? Elaine's response is that of all researchers, they are better at dealing with people as subjects than, say, the physicists. Their team is multidisciplinary. It's a bit like going to your Regional Health Protection Agency Director of Communicable Diseases demanding investigations around masts -- because they are the best epidemiologists, not because masts immediately cause disease. I don't class Essex with King's College, where the presence of Simon Wessely hangs as a dark cloud (read Tetrawatch on him, if you want more info.).

Remember, this is the ONLY UK investigation into base stations and sensitivity: we must not let it enter the body of research for perpetuity as a study unable to demonstrate an effect, or as being inconclusive, without the researchers being obliged to challenge their own methodology. The more dialogue there is, the more we can, with authority, challenge its methodology and demand better studies. But for now, having spoken with all concerned, I do think that it intends to be fully objective and fair.

So Essex needs more ES people to volunteer. I am taking part, but I am only mildly ES, and only more recently to GSM and UMTS (3G).

Will it harm me? I don't think it will (count the gaps! Several 5 minute exposures or sham exposures in 20 minute sessions, and even longer in their Faraday-shielded rooms with no EMF at all, will be a holiday after sleeping with 6 masts each and every night); but if you are very sensitive you might rightly choose to avoid ANY exposure. BUT, if you are sensitive and want others to see clearly that you are representative of the many thousands who need help, please do two things:

My APPEAL

1) Write down, email, post, read on the phone (01903 522521), YOUR experience of how masts of any kind (please name) affect you. Just a couple of paragraphs, and send them to me at watch@tetrawatch.net. YES: I want anecdotes!! I know you have probably done "a day in the life of..." for Nancy at Mast Sanity, or elsewhere, but bear with me. With Rod's help at ES-UK, I would like to "bank" as many as possible, because too many important people have been shielded from the actual content of our anecdotes, and I want it out and published. No names, just places and experiences, in your own words. A thousand people in three weeks have download a little local survey we did (popped the Tetrawatch website bandwidth at the weekend!), so let's use this way to be heard for what is happening to us, so we cannot be ignored.

2) Consider joining in the Essex study. I don't have to prove anything, but when the study is set up correctly it will show an effect on people. Remember, this is not a study to demonstrate illness, but to demonstrate that some people are sensitive to mobile signals that affects their well-being. "We couldn't even find enough ES people: do they really exist?" would be a terrible comment after our objections. If you can't track Essex down, contact me as above.

If they can get a full complement of ES people who are affected by masts, and they get no results, their setup is wrong, not us. I know the criticisms, and I am pressing for proper investigations; but gears don't turn, even slowly, without engagement. (I am not being paid be Essex to do this! I just hope you can see why I think it important.)

Why does this matter?

Today I found senior figures genuinely surprised to meet someone who can feel masts from a distance. I thought everyone knew these "anecdotes". Most, if not all, of my and your letters to Sir William Stewart (marked "Private, Confidential" "to the hand of Sir W") never reached him. They were intercepted and answered "on his behalf". BUT Sir William in his address today said quite clearly that we need to demonstrate that people's well-being is being affected, that this (Essex) research is to clarify this, and that we need to respond to these impacts BEFORE we know the bio-electromagnetic mechanisms (remember: NRPB typically says we don't know the mechanisms so the effects cannot be real?).

So at the moment I trust Sir W far more than the NRPB / HPA figures we deal with, and it's time we back him up with a willingness to be measured for what we claim is happening.

Thanks for your patience

Greenwashing as "corporate responsibility"

http://tinyurl.com/53bel

In Message "Greenwashing as "corporate responsibility" it was mentioned that the UK carrier O2 got an award for its "corporate responsibility policy".

Flush with that so-called "award" O2 is now going after an even bigger award. - Becoming an essential provider for government services by helping to create the "mobile government".

What's next on O2's Christmas wish list for Santa? How about legislation requiring all UK citizens who collect government benefits to have a mobile phone so that they can communicate with their "mobile' government? Or how about a special "welcome to the world" phone contract attached to all birth certificates - complete with a mobile phone shaped dummy so that the toddlers get use to handling the phone?

I can imagine O2's department of spin doctors working overtime, much like Santa's little band of elves, dreaming up all this stuff!

Note below that The mobile government conference, exhibition and seminar sessions are planned to take place on Tuesday 8th March 2005 at the QEII Conference Centre, London.

Wouldn't it be interesting if all the UK anti-mast organisations had a mass rally at the QEII Conference Centre on the same day - with speakers giving another perspective on the mobile revolution.

Don Maisch

http://govnet.co.uk/mobilegov/index.htm

"The high levels of mobile phone penetration mean it is vital to think about [mobiles] as a delivery mechanism for government services" e-Government Unit Spokesperson, 'Government Goes Mobile', BBC Online.

Mobile Government promises to play a major part in the electronic delivery of government services. However, its potential is above and beyond that of the 2005 government online targets. There are opportunities for mobile government to have a bearing on every single service delivered by the public sector: from parking to health, and in every single way: from how public sector staff do their jobs to direct public interaction with government.

The UK is well set for a mobile government revolution. We have one of the highest levels of mobile handset penetration - the necessary basic ingredient to encourage the m-citizen alongside the e-citizen.

"People, companies and governments need to understand how the mobile has re-shaped society for good" - Richard Brown, group public affairs director of O2.

The platform for successful mobile government is already in place. Suppliers in the market place have established relationships with the public in terms of mobile content and there is a space for applications of mobile government. Coupling this with other applications such as digital pens, the Blackberry and positioning systems - all of which can facilitate and improve the quality of services delivered - the mobile government age is surely upon us.

With this in mind, GovNet Events are proud to present this timely strategy event for central & local government departments, the wider public sector and public sector suppliers, providing a programme that will examine the potential for mobile government and showcase successful applications currently making a difference in central and local government departments all over the UK and Europe. The morning sessions will concentrate on mobile applications facilitating efficient public sector working. The afternoon sessions will look at how citizens can interact more closely with government through mobile technology.

Key senior figures from organisations at the centre of mobile government implementation will report on their experiences to develop services that benefit both their staff and the citizen, whilst remaining secure.

Over 300 key decision makers will join 20 speakers and 20 exhibitors for this high profile and prestigious event. The conference, exhibition and seminar sessions take place on Tuesday 8th March 2005 at the QEII Conference Centre, London.

In the last 20 years, since the the introduction of mobile phones, the incidence of brain cancers has gone up by 40%

I had the following letter published today in The Argus (dist Sussex wide). I rehashed it from someone elses work and The Argus played around with it a bit but I think it packs a powerful punch.

In the last 20 years (since the the introduction of mobile phones) the incidence of brain cancers has gone up by 40%.

The media won't cover it - there's too much money involved.

Meanwhile, brain dysfunction due to mobile phone microwave radiation is affecting many people's metabolism and resulting in immune system breakdown.

A micro-waved brain would be associated with a weakened immune response system, affecting periodontal health, jaw joint diseases and digestive disorders - every aspect of one's metabolism.

The effects are cumulative and could appear over an extended period of time.(E. Svubodo - Popular Science). Advice? Stay at least 6 to 8 feet away from anyone on a mobile phone.(Jerry Mittelman, DDS, FAPM)

Last summer neurosurgeon Leif Salford and colleagues at Lund University in Sweden published data showing for the first time an unambiguous link between microwave radiation emitted by GSM mobile phones (the most common type worldwide) and brain damage in rats.

If Salford's results are confirmed by follow-up studies in the works at research facilities worldwide, including one run by the US Air Force, the data could have serious implications for the one billion plus people glued to their mobiles.

Optus ordered by Land & Envt Court to turn off mobile phone tower

What wonderful news today.

Firstly a win for Cheltenham residents last night (Hornsby Council rejects Telstra's DA for antennas on Cheltenham Recreation Club) and now another win for a community. This time actually in the Land & Environment Court, thanks to the persistence, determination and sheer guts of Concord resident, Gabbie Piccini.

So it can be done! An encouraging ruling for other communities still fighting:

Fighting the battle on all fronts

Wentworth Courier Wednesday 17 November (Sydney)

Fighting the battle on all fronts

Just as phone towers grow like Topsy along the skyline, so do the lobby groups to fight them. Report KIM SHAW

Residents from Paddington and the Inner West have teamed up to fight 3G technology, claiming the network is not an essential telecommunications service and interferes with privacy rights.

The health impacts of electromagnetic radiation and the visual blight of phone towers are two additional issues which the group intends to raise with the Federal Government and with parent groups.

The rollout of 3G phone towers has caused consternation in dozens of neighbourhoods, as the towers must be placed closer together than regular mobile-phone towers in order to pass a signal.

A number of groups, such as "Tower Sanity", have cropped up in recent months arguing for a more cautious approach to the rollout of phone-tower facilities. The "Bronte No 3G" group last month lost a protracted battle against the installation of a Hutchison Telecoms 3G antenna in the vicinity of a playground, a primary school and a kindergarten.

The new lobby group with members in Paddington and Ashfield has no name as yet, but is collectively concerned about the privacy implications for 3G phone/camera technology.

Josephine Wadlow-Evans, of Paddington, said 3G technology was a luxury item and not an essential telecommunications service, and should not have the protection of the Federal Telecommunications Act. She said local councils should hold the planning powers over phone towers.

Under the Federal Telecommunications Act, phone towers less than three metres high are deemed low impact and can be erected with out the permission of the local council.

Mary Hawkins, a Greens councillor at Ashfield and a member of the new group, said she had yet to hear of 3G technology being used for social benefit. "You can see the benefit of mobile phones in calling for emergency services, but we don't think video phones provide essential social benefits," Ms Hawkins said. The group will seek to address Parents and Citizens groups from local schools and lobby the Federal Telecommunications Minister, Senator Helen Coonan.

A spokeswoman for Hutchison Telecoms said Australia followed safety standards set by the World Health Organisation in relation to electromagnetic radiation. She said 3G signals were one of the weakest radio signals in the environment compared with radio and TV broadcasts. Last month Hutchison and Telstra announced they would share Hutchison's 3G network infrastructure. The spokeswoman said this would minimise the impact the facilities had on local communities.
