Mobile phone users become psychologically addicted to using phones

BATTLE of Colman Road

PETER WALSH

02 January 2006 11:45

Families are facing a fresh battle to stop a mobile phone mast being installed near their homes after a telecommunication giant appealed against a decision to throw it out.

More than 500 people signed a petition against the application by O2 for a 15metre mast near to the Moss Pharmacy in Colman Road.

The campaign, which was orchestrated by University ward councillor Roy Blower, led to planning officers throwing the proposal out in June.

Norwich City Council was not able to divulge why the plans had been rejected, although the council's planning department confirmed the application had been given delegated refusal.

That meant it was rejected before it reached the stage of going before councillors for approval.

However delight for the campaigners has proved short-lived as the phone giant has lodged an appeal with Norwich City Council.

A spokeswoman for O2 previously saidbecause of increased usage of mobile phones more masts had to be put up to help keep up required coverage.

"I'm hopeful that when the appeal is heard common sense will prevail," said Mr Blower.

"We're not arguing only on the grounds of health, but the total intrusion of the mast in a residential area is not what the community wants. I think other alternative sites could be looked at and for commercial reasons they haven't, so I'm hopeful that common sense will prevail."

Paul Brock, owner of Collins Fish Bar which has branches on Colman Road and Dereham Road, said he was disappointed O2 had decided to appeal.

"The majority of our customers are from that area and we support whatever the locals want and they obviously don't want it," he said.

"It would be sad if the people who have signed the petition lost. I don't really know what else you can do — O2 are a big company to fight."

The Evening News has campaigned, through the Put Masts on Hold campaign, against the installation of mobile phone masts near homes and schools until it is proved they are safe.

Dr Ian Gibson, a long-time supporter of our campaign, said: "Lets hope the planning committee can be consistent and help remove these hated masts."

In December 2002 telecommunications company Hutchinson 3G submitted plans to the city council to put up a 13m mast next to the Colman Road Area Housing Office car park.

A petition was raised against the application on the grounds it would have a negative impact of the surroundings the proposals were thrown out soon after.

'Within days, my heart was really bad'

[January 02, 2006]

(The Sunday Herald Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)WRITER Ron Butlin believes he fell victim to the EMF waves emitted by his cordless phone. A few years ago, he had problems with an irregular heartbeat. These subsided until June, when he bought a Dect phone.

"I didn't make any connection, I was having a bit of a busy time . . . then bang, my heart just suddenly went really badly within days."

Butlin spent two nights in hospital with his heart in constant spasm in a condition he describes as being similar to that of Tony Blair, which required routine heart surgery. Butlin underwent an operation just before Christmas and is now recovering at home.

"It was only just before we were leaving to go to Switzerland a couple of weeks ago. I happened to mention something to my agent in London and he said his partner had been suffering something similar, and in Germany they had all been blaming this Dect phone. We took the phone off, and immediately I felt better."

When Butlin still had the phone, he would take it down to the garden, where he liked to work in good weather. The fact the phone was able to receive a signal at such a distance now worries him.

"It's blasting everything down through three storeys, so you imagine how powerful it is."

Butlin said that during his recent visit to Switzerland, Dect phones were being sold at cut prices because of concerns that the government might introduce health warnings or even ban their sale. Here in the UK, however, Butlin is shocked at there being "so little concern".

"As one article said, it's like having a phone mast in your own bedroom, yet there's almost nothing about this, whereas there's concern about masts and mobiles."

He would like to see Dect phones come with a health warning, even though he concedes that his heart problems predated his purchase of one of the phones.

"I have no doubt that these phones have a big part to play [in my condition], " he added.

Even if you detest this mast, don't pull it down

Worcester News

31.12.05

CAMPAIGNERS who unsuccessfully fought against a phone mast being put up are begging people not to take matters into their own hands and tear it down.

Instead, they are hoping the local government ombudsman takes up their cause and looks into how the city council conducted its planning consultation.

Despite protests, threats of legal action and intervention from MP Mike Foster, mobile firm O2 won permission to put up a mast on Woodgreen Drive in Warndon Villages, Worcester, and it went up a fortnight ago.

Campaign member Grant Hughes, of Hingley Avenue, said: "We don't want anybody taking matters into their own hands. We don't want any criminal damage.

"We've been amazed by the strength of feeling and people are still fuming.

"There are people on this estate who are saying: `It won't stay up for long'. We have to be clear that we don't want to do anything against the law."

Police were called last month when workmen laying cables for the mast said they were being threatened by protesters.

At the start of this month a phone mast in Hampton, near Evesham, was pulled down, causing damage valued at thousands of pounds.

Mr Hughes added: "We've been told that we've got a good case for the ombudsman to find the council negligent because we believe that the plans didn't show how wide the mast would be and that some residents backing on to the site weren't consulted."

Earlier this month, Mr Foster proposed a motion condemning O2 as "arrogant and high-handed".

O2 said it looked at other sites proposed by local residents but they were unavailable or unsuitable.

No one from the planning department of Worcester City Council was available at the time the Worcester News went to press.

VILLAGERS UNHAPPY WITH MAST PROPOSALS

Kent and Sussex Courier

15:00 - 30 December 2005

By Euan Youdale
sussex.reporters@courier.co.uk

THE FESTIVE season has been ruined for Wadhurst residents who claim plans for an "ugly" mobile phone mast were deliberately sneaked through the back door over Christmas.

Outraged villagers started a massive leafleting campaign and turned out in their droves on a bitter Wednesday morning this week to demonstrate against the 33ft O2 mast, which would be sited at Durgate's former Chrome Tech building.

They claimed it would be a dangerous eyesore.

Dismayed mother-of-two, Anna Godden, canvassed more than 100 homeowners in her effort to reverse the plans, which she said could drive her family out of the village.

The 35-year-old argued that the mast might have a devastating affect on health, especially as there are three schools within 400 metres of the site.

The period during which residents could complain about the mast originally finished yesterday, in the middle of the festive period.

Residents blamed O2 for choosing this time of year to apply when many people were on holiday or busy with Christmas plans.

Mrs Godden said: "It is outrageous and extremely worrying, we have not had time to put the issues forward. It has ruined our Christmas."

Since the demonstration this week, Wealden District Council decided to extend the consultation period until Wednesday.

A district council spokeswoman said: "We recognise these types of applications can be sensitive."

But residents also blasted a letter from the district council sent out earlier this month to inform villagers about the plans, claiming many people had been confused by its contents.

The letter, dated December 6, said a flagpole could be erected at the site and later added that there would be three 2G antennas placed inside it - but the words mobile phone mast were never used.

Mrs Godden: "Most people just thought a flagpole would be nice because there would be a flag flying when you came into the village, it was completely misleading.

"The mast will look awful in Wadhurst, which is a beautiful village and Durgates is a very historic part of the village.

"It's all quite sad and very personal as it will probably mean that we will move. I am not going to bring my children up in the shadow of one of these things."

Mayfield Road resident Sara Rice, 35, also hit the campaign trail following O2's application.

The mother-of-two said: "This application at Christmas, when people are extremely preoccupied, seems to be a deliberate ploy to sneak it through.

"As usual this smacks of everyone wanting to make money over the consideration of the local community. It would be a total eyesore."

Mrs Rice added that apart from the three schools, the area was densely populated.

Although there is no proof that mobile masts cause ill health,

Omega this is not true. See under:

the government commissioned Stewart Report in 2000 recommended that district councils took a precautionary approach when siting masts close to children, because youngsters absorb proportionally more radiation than adults.

Mrs Rice added: "I fear for this community. People have got to make a stand and think about children's health."

But one fellow resident Charles Coyne, 68, said: "Not all the people are opposed to the mast. Wadhurst has a number of areas of very bad reception. If people have mobiles then they need the masts to support them."

O2 spokesman James Stevenson said the firm had already received 30 responses from residents during the consultation period, which he said proved that there had been plenty of time to respond.

He added: "It was the district council's own timing when it came to the consultation period and we cannot see any problem with the way the application has been handled."

Your Cell Phone Is Making Me Sick

You might be interested in posting this in your newsletter:

This is an email that I wrote and sent to everyone I know. If you believe that EMFs might possibly have something to do with your illness or that of a loved one, then I encourage you to pass on this email to everyone you know. The only way we can stop this is by not giving "them" money to hurt us.

Dear friend,

Your cell phone (if you own one) is very likely making a lot of people sick - including yourself.

If you care about your friends, your family, yourself, and the world in which we live, please read the following and pass it on to your friends - and hopefully to everyone you know.

Since the advent of the cell phone, I have noticed a number of people around me becoming sick. Just when cell phones were starting to be sold on the market, I remember a student of mine's daughter dying of influenza. This was the first time I had ever heard of anyone dying of influenza. Since that time, a friend of mine's wife committed suicide, another friend's son developed leukemia, the grandson of a colleague was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, a former teacher of mine developed breast cancer, a friend of a friend developed a brain tumor, another friend and her daughter developed lymphoma and I have known a number of women having miscarriages - and in the latest case the fetus was deformed.

In April of this year, I started to exhibit the symptoms of what is called "Chronic Fatigue Syndrome" and which was originally called "Yuppie Flu," because it seemed to originally affect "Yuppies" working in Silicon Valley. The symptoms included (1) excessive thirst, (2) night sweats, (3) brain fog, (4) swollen lymph glands, (5) fatigue (6) insomnia, (7) a weakened immune system, (8) nausea, (9) heart pain, (10) back pain, (11) unexplained anxiety, (12) neurological symptoms, (13) vision problems (14) testicular pain, and so on. At any rate, I later learned that many of these symptoms are identical to what the Russians coined "Radio Wave Illness" years ago after experiments with electromagnetic radiation. It took me about four months of being very sick - and trying all kinds of treatments - to finally figure out that it was probably the four cell phone base stations within a quarter mile radius of my apartment that had something to do with making me sick. I finally rented a small cabin up in the mountains and after two months most of my symptoms have "miraculously" disappeared. Unfortunately, when I get into cell phone range, these symptoms start to come back. ( I have though been chelating metals out of my body and this has helped me "tolerate" the EMFs a little better now.)

From the research I have read on the subject, I believe

that the electromagnetic radiation emitted by cell phones and cell phone towers (or masts or base stations) is the main cause of all of the above illnesses. I also believe that they are behind autism, ADD, and Alzheimer's disease - and in Japan, responsible for lower scholastic standards, school refusal, increases in leukemia, an inability to conceive and bear children, increased violence, and increases in suicides.

We are now all being exposed to extremely high levels of electromagnetic radiation mainly from the cell phone base stations which are popping up like mushrooms all over the world. According to the former Dr. Cherry of Lincoln University in New Zealand, these are about 10,000 times what we would experience in nature.

These devices are dangerous and should not be on the market.

The cell phone industry - in order to make hundreds of billion dollars in profits - has ignored the research showing clearly that these devices are extremely dangerous. They are trying to spin the science.

It is difficult to fight an industry that is making 100s of billions of dollars in profits and has control of the governments and media and can spew out its commercial propaganda. But I can do my part by sending you this grass-roots email and ask you to take action and spread the word.

The Internet is a powerful tool for freedom, democracy, and human rights and a powerful tool against commercial interests which threaten these. We have a right to not be exposed to this microwave radiation. We have a right to be told the truth about the dangers of cell phones, their towers, and the radiation they emit. We have a right to not be sold things that are harming our health.

IT'S UP TO YOU! You can choose to be part of the solution
(by canceling your contract - at least until you are sure that they are safe) or you can be part of the problem (by continuing to use your cell phone and pretending that there is nothing wrong). But I can assure you that if you do the research - and you can see through the spin - you will find that the evidence points to these being very dangerous devices and that they are making a lot of people sick and that they should never be sold on the market. Believe me, no one more than I and people in my predicament wishes that they were not.

One is reminded of Martin Nemoller's warning with regards to Nazi Germany:

"First they came for the Communists, but I was not a Communist, so I said nothing. Then they came for the Social Democrats, but I was not a Social Democrat, so I did nothing. Then came the Trade Unionists, but I was not a Trade Unionist. And then they came for the Jews, but I was not a Jew, so I did little. Then when they came for me, there was no one left to stand up for me."

Don't wait until you are SICK to take action! THE CELL PHONE COMPANIES WILL NOT PAY YOUR MEDICAL BILLS. DON'T PAY THEM TO PUT UP MORE TOWERS AND MAKE MORE PEOPLE SICK - including you and your family.

If you really do care about your friends, your family, yourself and the world you live in, please do the following:

(1) CANCEL YOUR CELL PHONE CONTRACT ASAP if you have one

(2) forward this email to everyone you know

(3) become informed and inform others

(4) contact your politicians and tell them what you think

(5) take action by joining support groups

--------

I've made Art Kab's piece (attached) into a foldover A5 leaflet, made a load of copies and left them in piles in about 8 - 9 cafes, shops, pubs, community centres etc all over Brighton.

http://www.buergerwelle.de/pdf/your_cell_phone_is_making_me_sick.doc

In just one week, they've been flying off the shelves STS! I can hardly keep up with replenishing the piles. At my local newsagents, they're going at the rate of about 10 a day!

I think the large title and making "SICK" stand out grab peoples attention. If anyone wants to make Art Kabs piece into a leaflet, I've attached it ready formatted. The only thing you'll need to do is change the page order (or print off as is, then cut and rearrange the pages for photocopying).

I have access to an ethical printing centre. If anyone wants me to do either 250 or 500 copies - or any others which are important campaigning leaflets - just email me trueforever@ntlworld.com. 250 = £5.10, 500 = £8.66 - please add p & p. I'll do these at cost. For other leaflets please email me the leaflet first to look at.

Great Gary

However just one thought.

Is there room to add at the end that radiation is also continuously emitted from digital cordless phones, wireless computer networks, some burglar alarms and baby monitors and interactive whiteboards and people must watch out for all these devices.

Sarah P

--------

Thanks just one thing (and I don't want to be critical) but the government is putting wireless computer networks into all schools. It has earmarked £1.7 billion to put computers into schools. These are often wireless as its the new 'fad' I'm not sure if they are also pushing wireless interactive whiteboards into schools although that is what they were designed for and are being put into schools. My son's primary school has proposals to put all these in and microwave detector burglar alarms. Its a nightmare! and they're not listening to me so I am having to start a petition and laboriously explain the situation to all the parents hence one of the reasons why I am so busy at the moment!

Best of luck
