DIRTY DISNEY

Recent tests have confirmed the fact that some Disney children's clothes contain toxic chemicals hazardous to human health and the environment. Disney does not think it should ensure its products are free of toxic chemicals. We need your help to pressure them to change.

GE FOOD? NOT IN MY TROLLEY!

Are you a European consumer? Now you have the power to make sure that your supermarkets and restaurants remain GE-free. New and much stricter EU labelling legislation is in place; with your help we can find the products containing Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) and name & shame them for everyone to see. The more people that help to reject the products, the easier it will be to maintain our right to say NO to GMOs:

http://weblog.greenpeace.org/ge/action.html

For people not located in the EU you can still get involved writing letters to food producers, supermarkets and educating your friends and family about the dangers of GE. Check at our useful *Action Tool kit* to see how you can get involved:

HEALTH OF PREGNANT WOMEN VS POLLUTING INDUSTRIES?

Four years ago, environmentalists and public health advocates were celebrating President Clinton's plan to reduce mercury pollution from power plants by 90 percent by 2008. Now, President Bush is attempting to trash this plan through the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The EPA is considering delaying the cleanup of mercury emissions from coal-fired power plants for 20 years or more. We only have until April 30th to tell the EPA that these reductions are necessary to protect public health:

ICELAND WHALES PLEDGE - ALMOST THERE!

We've now generated 38,000 pledges to visit Iceland if the government stops whaling -- the equivalent of more than ten years of whaling revenues in tourist income to Iceland. Our Pledge challenge competition for a bunk on the Esperanza has ended, having generated 14,000 additional pledges! Well done everyone! We've circulated a questionnaire to the top 20 pledge-getters and are gathering results now.

It's a really heartening experience to read what people have done to promote the pledge. One cyberactivist asked what the deadline for reply was, as she was busy organising an anti-war rally, while working on her PHD on environmental impacts on lizards and organising a presentation to school kids about ecology. We've asked how you've been promoting the pledge, and have heard about banners on websites, posters put up at universities, chatroom blitzes, one clever activist created a public MSN messenger account called "I HELP TO SAVE WHALES… ASK ME HOW YOU CAN DO THE SAME." Another pledge-getter from Nigeria travelled 170 km to Lagos in order to put a notice up on a bulletin board in a cyber-cafe. We'll keep you updated on who will be the hard-working representative of the cyberactivist community to sail with our ship to Iceland. In the meantime, keep pushing that pledge!

WORLD'S TALLEST TREE-SIT SHIFTS TO BALLOT BOXES

In Tasmania, Australia, they have these trees, that are... tall. OK, a lot of trees are tall, but these are the tallest hardwood trees in the world. We're talking trees taller than a 25-story building and 400 years old. Some people look at trees like this and they just think, "wow". Other people, they look at these trees and they think, "Wow, I could cut that down, chop it up, feed it through a wood chipper, and sell it to these companies in Japan!"

After five months in a tree sit to prevent these forests giants being turned into wood chips the activists are taking a well-earned break and the campaign now moves into its second phase of focusing on the ballot boxes of the coming federal election and increasing international pressure overseas.

You can help by contacting the Japanese companies that buy the wood chips:

Demo in Stuttgart

STOP ILLEGAL TIMBER IMPORT TO EUROPE

Greenpeace has taken action to stop a suspected illegal shipment of Indonesian rainforest plywood from being imported into the EU. There is currently no law to stop the import of timber like this into the EU. The fact that this shipment can enter Europe, despite the desire of most countries in the European Union to combat this trade, shows how important it is to introduce new legislation and other measures to stop the import of illegally logged timber.

Please write to Poul Nielson, the European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid, asking him to stop this illegal timber trade immediately.

Greenpeace Cyber-Alert

Verbraucher wollen kein Gen-Food.

Greenpeace: Urgent EU action needed

CRITICAL CLIMATE-SAVING LAW

The EU has up until now been the world leader in taking action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and Germany has played a leading role on climate change for more than a decade. But now Germany's Minister for Economics threatens to undermine a progressive EU law, critical to tackling climate change.

This law, the Emissions Trading Directive, aims to help all EU countries start reducing CO2 emissions from next January. It's a major part of how countries will meet their Kyoto Protocol targets.

Germany has set itself the ambitious target of reducing greenhouse gases by 21% by the year 2012 compared to the 1990 levels.

But if the government doesn't get its act together, it will fail to meet these targets, and will not meet any future reduction targets either. It's time for Germany to get its act together.

STOP ILLEGAL TIMBER

Greenpeace has taken action to stop a shipment of Indonesian rainforest plywood - from a mill known to be receiving illegal timber - being imported into the UK and Belgium. Politicians in Europe are currently discussing what action can be taken to tackle the illegal timber trade. Please help them to make up their minds by contacting the EU Commissioner responsible for the EU's work on this subject.

Please contact Poul Nielson, European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid, demanding that the EU:

- Develops strong European legislation that will make it a crime to import and market illegally sourced timber and forest products.

- Takes steps to crack down on the illegal timber trade by strengthening existing national and European legislation on money laundering and public procurement.

- Provide adequate funds to tackle illegal logging and the relating trade.

Send a message to Poul Nielson here:

http://act.greenpeace.org/ams/e?a=1317&s=for

Thank you for your help.

Greenpeace: We need you on March 20th

Greenpeace: We need you on March 20th

"On February 17, 2003, a front page news analysis in the New York Times described the global anti-war protests as the emergence of 'the second superpower'." --The Register

Dear Friends,

We need a few minutes of your time and a few mouse clicks to build a powerful message: the return of the second superpower.

On February 15th last year, 30 million people were on the streets to say "No" to war. The centreless coalition of groups and individuals who organised those activities want YOU and YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS back on the street this Saturday, March 20th, to demonstrate that we STILL say "No" to war.

In March 2003, George Bush told us that "Intelligence gathered by this and other governments leaves no doubt that the Iraq regime continues to possess and conceal some of the most lethal weapons ever devised."

We now know this was untrue. And a war based on this untruth has cost over 10,000 civilian lives.

On March 18th, one year will have passed since the invasion of Iraq began. We can't stand silent. The world's leaders need to know that the demonstration by 30 million people last year was a lasting expression of a global democratic force.

Be a part of the second superpower. Stand up against future illegal, preemptive wars and protest the continuing suppression of human rights and free speech which have characterised this one. Help us get the word out that we're making a second showing on Saturday, March 20th.

Click here to send an invitation to your friends to join you in a day of peaceful protest for a world without war:

Peace,

Greenpeace

P.S. Please forward this to your friends.
