H.ome from Iraq!

"I earned capital in the campaign, political capital, and now I intend to spend it." --George W. Bush, 11/4/04

BACKGROUND:

We United States citizens have allowed the Bush Administration to effectively bankrupt the U.S. economy by using OUR taxpayer dollars to fund an illegal, preemptive war on Iraq. To date, over 1,200 U.S. soldiers and an estimated 100,000 Iraqi civilians have died and nearly 8,500 U.S. soldiers have been wounded in this illegal war.

A growing number of people of all political persuasions are renouncing this illegal war as a grotesque failure. To George W. Bush we say, "Enough is enough!" It's time we citizens take control of how our money is spent! It's time we, the people, TAKE BACK AMERICA!

We must band together as a UNITED FRONT to stop the funding of the illegal, genocidal war on Iraq and bring ALL U.S. soldiers safely home.

Preventing the flow of capital to the government is the only way that the Bush Administration will comply with our demand. This can be accomplished through a MASSIVE, collective, cooperative CASH-flow boycott.

THE B.U.S.H. BOYCOTT:

WHEN: Monday, November 22, 2004*
(Phase I)

WHERE: banks, savings & loans, credit unions, ATMs--nationwide

OUR ONE DEMAND:

Bring all United States soldiers safely home from Iraq.
(B.U.S.H.)

HOW:
1) On Monday, November 22, 2004, withdraw as much CASH as you can afford to NOT SPEND from your bank, savings & loan, credit union, or ATM until all U.S. soldiers are safely home from Iraq.

The amount of CASH can be $5, $10, $20 or more, whatever you can afford to NOT SPEND until all United States soldiers are safely home from Iraq.

2) COMMUNICATE, COMMUNICATE!!

If you withdraw CASH from your ATM, black out your account number on your receipt. Write: B.U.S.H. BOYCOTT on the receipt, and put it in an ATM envelope. Insert the envelope in the ATM message slot.

If you withdraw CASH from a bank, inform the teller or bank manager that you are participating in the B.U.S.H. Boycott and will REDEPOSIT this CASH when all United States soldiers are safely home from Iraq.

Email, fax, call, write government representatives, the media, corporations, businesses, and financial institutions explaining that you have withdrawn CASH from your savings account, that you will not spend, lend or invest your CASH, and that you will REDEPOSIT your CASH when all United States soldiers are safely home from Iraq.

3) Put YOUR CASH in a safe place. Do not spend, lend, or invest it. Think of it as an investment in our children's future.

4) Tell everyone you know about the B.U.S.H. boycott.

5) The B.U.S.H. Boycott is a grassroots effort created and supported by concerned citizens who want the illegal war on Iraq to end. It is not controlled by the media, political pundits, or corporate America. Its success depends soley on we, the people of the United States of
America.

*THE B.U.S.H. BOYCOTT, will be REPEATED on the following dates:

Wednesday, December 22, 2004, Phase 2.

Thursday, January 20, 2005, Phase 3.
(INAUGURATION DAY)

I think this is an excellent idea and plan to withdraw all but essential funds on November 22nd. As a further step, I have cancelled my satellite TV, magazine, and newspaper subscriptions, decided not to buy a new car, opted to cancel plans for Thanksgiving dinner, and am seriously considering nixing Christmas.

The only thing fascists understand is money, and if enough consumers close their wallets, it will eventually have an impact. I urge everyone to seek ways to curtail spending until every one of our soldiers is back on these shores.

Citizens for Legitimate Government http://legitgov.org/index.html has started something called the "Great Refusal" which is similar to this strategy. You might want to visit their site and enlist.

Take Action : Protest the Attack on Falluja

November 8, 2004

George Bush didn’t waste time. He decided to quickly use his “political capital” to widen the war in Iraq by launching an all-out assault on Falluja. We know you are all exhausted from the election work, but we can’t let this attack happen without protesting the horrendous escalation of violence.

As we write, U.S. warplanes are dropping huge bombs on civilian neighborhoods, and ground troops are entering the city. One hospital, Nazzal Emergency Hospital, was destroyed in an air strike; another, Falluja General Hospital, has been seized by U.S. forces, making it unlikely that injured civilians will be able to go there for treatment. The estimated 50,000 civilians who remain in Falluja lack running water, electricity, and food.

There will undoubtedly be many civilian injuries and deaths: during the last siege of Falluja in April, at least 600 Iraqis were killed, most of them civilians. The death toll is expected to be high on the U.S. side as well: Marine commanders have warned that deaths among U.S. forces could reach levels not seen since the Vietnam War.

The U.S. assault on Falluja is a catastrophic action that will result in horrific and unnecessary bloodshed, fuel anger and resentment against the U.S., and swell the ranks of terrorist groups rather than eradicating terrorism. We need to raise our voices in opposition to this attack, insist that the U.S. return to peace negotiations, and call for our troops to be brought home now.

Please consider taking one of the following actions:

ORGANIZE ACTIONS THIS THURSDAY THROUGH SATURDAY

We need to be vocal and visible in our opposition to the assault on Falluja. Organize actions this week outside local Congressional offices, while Congress is in recess, or in a high-profile location in your community.

Be sure to list your actions on the United for Peace and Justice calendar ( http://www.unitedforpeace.org ) so we can publicize and amplify all of our voices.

Ideas for action include:

* candlelight vigils to mourn the deaths that will be caused by this attack

* creative/visual street protests that use coffins or enlarged images of Iraqi civilian casualties or people dressed as bloodied and bandaged civilians or soldiers

* sit-ins inside Congressional offices

* meetings with members of Congress

* collaborations with Veterans For Peace groups on Veterans Day events (Thursday, 11/11), emphasizing the message that in order to support our future veterans, we need to get them out of Falluja and out of Iraq

* holding banners (pink, of course) and/or distributing leaflets at busy intersections, shopping districts, or other high-traffic locations

CONTACT LOCAL MEDIA OUTLETS

Flood your local media outlets with messages of opposition to the assault on Falluja, and demand that they talk about the civilians who are being killed and injured. Millions of people listen to talk radio every day: organize people to call the shows in your area and speak out. Write letters to the editor and send in opinion pieces. Ask reporters if they would like to interview an anti-war activist.

TELL YOUR CONGRESSIONAL REPRESENTATIVES YOU OPPOSE THE ASSAULT ON FALLUJA

Call the Congressional switchboard at (202) 225-3121 and ask to be transferred to your Representative or Senator.

Get up-to-date news from Iraq by subscribing to Occupation Watch’s email list at http://www.occupationwatch.org.

Thank you for taking the time to show your horror at the escalating violence and call for an end to the US occupation of Iraq.

One week left to protect our trees

There is just one week left to protect our precious national forests from logging, mining, and road building at the hands of the Bush administration. The deadline for speaking out on this issue is next Monday, November 15th.

Please click here now to send your comments before it's too late or just hit "reply" and then "send" to this message if you are already a registered user.
http://www.saveourenvironment.org/ctt.asp?u=2205119&l=5384

The Bush administration has proposed a repeal of the excellent Roadless Area Conservation Rule that currently protects 58.5 million acres of our national forests. Repealing the Roadless Rule would put our forests at risk of permanent destruction.

The Bush administration has made it clear that they favor corporate special interests over preserving our national forests for future generations. Now we must make it clear that we will NOT allow our last wild forests to be destroyed by chain saws, bull dozers and oil drills!

Your comments really do make a difference. Over 61,000 SaveOurEnvironment.org members have already weighed in on this issue. But we still need your help before it's too late! Will you join their efforts to stop the roads and protect our forests?

Please click here now to submit your comments!
http://www.saveourenvironment.org/ctt.asp?u=2205119&l=5384

We've set an ambitious goal of sending more than 1 million comments in order to send a clear, powerful message that we will not tolerate the destruction of our national forests.

To help us reach this goal, please forward this message to your friends as soon as you've submitted your comments.

Thanks for your help!

Dear Forest Service Chief Bosworth:

In response to the public comment period (Docket # 04-161913), I strongly oppose the proposal to repeal the Roadless Area Conservation Rule.

The Roadless Rule is a balanced policy that was finalized after years of scientific study, 600 public hearings and a record number of public comments, which overwhelmingly support protecting roadless areas through the rule.

The Roadless Rule is a vital tool for protecting our national forests from harmful and costly road-building and commercial logging.

I urge you to abandon this proposal and keep the Roadless Area Conservation Rule intact in the Lower 48 states and Alaska's Chugach National Forest, and reinstate the rule in the Tongass National Forest.

Thank you for consideration of my comments on this crucial issue.

Sincerely,

[your name inserted here]

GLOBAL BAN ON GM-TREES

List of signatories
http://elonmerkki.net/dyn/appeal/list

The petition for global ban on GM trees will next be presented there for United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in its 10th session COP10 in December year 2004.

We the signatories
wish to point out that in the Rio Convention on Biological Diversity world leaders declared they were conscious "of the intrinsic value of biological diversity and of the ecological, genetic, social, economic, scientific, educational, cultural, recreational and aesthetic values of biological diversity and its components,

Conscious also of the importance of biological diversity for evolution and for maintaining life sustaining systems of the biosphere,

Affirming that the conservation of biological diversity is a common concern of humankind."

We recognize that
forests are a key factor sustaining the climate and the composition of the atmosphere.

We state that forests, along with the oceans, are key to the diversity of life on the planet - this diversity being the result of millions of years of evolution enabling the species to adapt to their surrounding ecosystems and the ecosystems to adapt to the surrounding climate.

We further wish to point out that genetic diversity within a species is part of the evolutionary original capital helping the species to survive in changing conditions, while species diversity within ecosystems is part of the capital helping the ecosystems to adapt to climate change.

We state that
the decision made in the context of the UN-lead Kyoto process to allow the use of genetically modified trees to tackle climate change is in contravention of the principles of the Convention on Biological Diversity. Trying to fight climate change by growing GM-trees would lead to the creation of vast plantations of cloned GM-trees on our planet. It would mean enormous losses in terms of diversity, while exposing these GM monocultures to disease, pests - and the effects of the ongoing climate change itself.

We believe that
the risks for biosafety involved in the introduction of genetically modified trees are such that they extend over state borders as well as generations, and should therefore not be taken at the present state of knowledge. Studies in population genetics show that genetic exchanges between trees can extend over whole continents. There is a real risk that by introducing GM-trees we would trigger a series of GM-contaminations spreading all over the forest cover on our planet. Other dangerous ecological scenarios include the potential metabolic incompatibility of GM-trees with their ecological surroundings, as well as genetically modified material being transferred to viruses and bacteria.

On the grounds of what has been stated above, we demand that the world reject the introduction of genetically modified trees.

In our view, we should be heading in the opposite direction. Instead of establishing plantations of genetically modified trees, we should strive to restore the forest cover of our planet towards its former riches and abundance.

Diverse, healthy and vital forests can best safeguard the ability of our living planet to adapt to the ongoing climate change. They also form the best basis for a diverse, healthy and vital forest economy, now and in the future.

We are happy to tell that there is just now 2382 persons and 269 organisations and groups which have signed the demand for UN!

Great thanks for all of you for your great support!

The next stage for the campaign is now at hand.

The UN Kyoto meeting, Cop10, will be held 6-13 December in Buenos Aires. We ask you to join to start with us some of these actions:

1. Reaching the people - campaign poster on the walls!
We are happy to present the first campaign posters:
http://elonmerkki.net/forestforum/uk/gm-posters.html
All signed ngo's and individual can freely produce prints for noncommercial distribution.

Let´s put the posters on walls, in good and suitable places. The poster campaign continues also after the Kyoto meeting but we would like to hear and see that this poster campaign would start just now, when Kyoto meeting is going to start.

2. Reaching the parlamentarians - letter to parliament houses!
In that next Kyoto meeting there will arrive a lot of parlamentarians from different countries.

We suggest urgent action and cooperation to reach those people on next days before the UN meeting

Behalf of our campaign we have produced a nice letter for parlamentarians. Look here:

http://elonmerkki.net/forestforum/uk/posters/ff-letter_a4.pdf,
( High resolution, 4 mb )

http://elonmerkki.net/forestforum/uk/posters/ff-letter_a4_LR.pdf, ( Low resolution, 907 Kb )

We hope that there will be at least one group or organisation from every country, who would print and distribute this letter for your parliament house.

We hope that as many as possible of the parlamentarians on the Earth can get this letter on their table, as soon as possible.

If you or your organisation can take part this work, please let us know by replying to this message.

3. Country working groups watching GM trees
In many countries there already exists activists who have expressed their willingness for GM tree watch networking.

The idea is to support together mutual news change and reporting, open and interactive database, to be really aware what is going on with GM trees on the Earth.

If you or your organisation is interested on this kind of cooperation please dont hesitate to contact us.

One way for supporting the campaign and your local work there is that you order for sale our campaign posters. We send them by 5 euros when you order at least 20 copyes. More information by graphist and producer: hannes@kettukallio.fi

One of the most famous thinker and criticist on GM issue, Dr Mae Van Ho, had a four days journey in Finland and it was a real success. We shall soon produce videoreports on that highly inspirating visit on the address: http://elonmerkki.net/dyn/forum/topic/?catid=69

If you have some interesting videoreports on forest and/or GM issue, please visit on the site and open a discussion for that and give the link for video.

Global Ban on GM trees

NO RIGHT FOR CONTAMINATION
http://elonmerkki.net/forestforum

Press release 12th december 2004

GM trees are a false option
Biodiversity is the solution

In the beginning of this year three environmental organisations launched the Internet action for protesting the GM trees supportive decision made in UN Kyoto meeting in Milano, last December. Look the press release here:
http://elonmerkki.net/forestforum/uk/press3.html

Today there is about 300 ngo's and almost 3000 individuals supporting the demand.

-The basic idea to reward with emission rights those western countries which would be putting up tree plantations in third world is simply false, even without GM trees, says campaigner Hannu Hyvönen by the Union of Ecoforestry in Finland.

-Instead of that kind of carbon offset imperialism, we should just strive to restore the forest cover of our planet towards its former riches and abundance. GM trees would be the last step in the destructive course of industrial forestry. The campaign also argues that the introduction of genetically modified trees with their unpredictable and irreversible risk for forest ecosystems is breaking the national sovereighnity of those countries which would be contaminated by pollen of GM plantations.

-Actually the introduction of GM trees in open environment is breaking the Convention on Biodiversity, Cartagena Biosafety protocoll and several other international threaties. States have the responsibility to ensure that activities within their jurisdiction or control do not cause damage to the environment of other States or of areas beyond the limits of national jurisdiction, says lawyer and activist of People´s Biosafety Association, Mikko Vartiainen.

Tree plantations are not forests

-Seeking the alternative solutions
The forest cover of the Earth has however a great role in global carbon balance. The campaign is now continuing to open discussion on alternative solutions and strategies for preventing climate change.

- The recent findings on boreal silvicultural alternatives show that this mainstream forest management, with monoculture plantations and clearcuttings is not at all the most efficient in binding carbon and maintaining carbon strorages.

-Also the good examples on agroforestry solutions tell us that there are much more better solutions to work with trees than monocultures, invites Leo Stranius, chair of Friends of Earth Finland to continue the discussion for alternatives on People´s Forest Forum: http://elonmerkki.net/forestforum

World Wide Petition Against the Escalation in Iraq - Petition gegen den weiteren Irakkrieg

An initiative of the Brussells tribunal endorsed by the World Tribunal on Iraq

Info@Brusselstribunal.org

Stoppt die E s k a l a t i o n !
