Following Andy's message a couple of days ago where he mentions the disappearance of nesting seagulls on his roof, I have become aware of the lack of nesting seagulls in Brighton this year. Central Brighton is usually teaming with seagulls, particularly in the spring, when newborn seagulls nesting in many chimneys are being cared for. There is usually unending noise throughout the night - now there is a complete silence......

If this is happening in other coastal towns where tetra masts have been erected, then this ought to be quite easy to establish.

Firstly we had the disappearing sparrows, now we have the question regarding the diminishing population of seagulls.

Some time ago, I endeavoured to make contact with the RSPB regarding the possibility of a link between fewer birds and microwave radiation from mobile phone technology. I was surprised that, in spite of two attempts, I got no acknowledgement from the RSPB. I subsequently discovered that the main sponsors of the RSPB is in fact VODAFONE. Could this be the reason for their lack of response. Since then they have conducted various trials to try to ascertain the reason, or reasons, for the drop in the bird population, including the request for people to count the number of bugs on their car number plates to determine if the food chain has been changed, but none of their attempts at finding a solution included the possibility that mobile phones could be one of the reasons. Anyway, it could be that the microwave radiation is killing the bugs too. So that is a double whammy for the birds.

RF/MW mast radiation has been known to affect bird navigation and flocking behaviour since 1924, when the first transatlantic transmitters were installed at Valencia, Spain. The birds there broke up their previously co-ordinated wheeling flocks as soon as the transmitters were switched on each day. Ulrich Warnke published a paper in 1989 proposing that these flocks relay on electric fields induced by wing movements which charge the birds. As for the sparrow disappearances, there are many possible causes: but one cannot rule out disruption of nesting behaviour and chick embryo abnormalities (see the Henhouse project of the 1980s), especially since the harmonics of the base resonant frequency (related to 900 and 1800MHz wavelengths) matches the house sparrows normal egg diameter. The RSPB doesnt seem to want to know about it, sadly.

As a wife of a birdwatcher it might be worth pointing out here that the org that attempted to publicise the link between sparrows starlings and masts a few years ago was the british ornithology trust .. they and the rspb arnt bosom buddies though both are respected.. it may be worth while getting on to them about this issue instead http://www.bto.org/

I was in the debate and told the public that we are in the middle of the worst enviromental and health catastrophe in history, that our authority is lying (I gave example of this) and that the experts are not representative and are to a majority members of ICNIRP. That the experts that are in majority in Sweden and who are critical are not allowed to participate in reviews in this issue. I had planned to urge for a Catastrophe commission on this issue, but was not allowed to say all I had planned, because of too limited time.

MR Hans Wiksell from Karolinska Institute (he pays himself for his professorship - he is a civiliengineer who speculates on the stock exchange and owns a lot of telecom-stocks, he has also compared the radiation with raspberry juice in a broschure from the industry on the issue) told the public that his opinion is that there are no non-termal effects..... Mr Mjönes from SSI told that there are no studies showing any effects like those that people are experiencing. Olle Johansson talked about the handicapped-perspective of this issue.

They're all but attached to the businessman walking through the airport, the teenage girl window shopping at the mall and the expectant mother in the waiting room of her doctor's office.

They're cell phones, and they're taking over. Like mosquitoes in summer, we can't get away from them, even though some think they pose a bigger health hazard than those pesky insects.

Radiation that comes from cell phones is more permeating and more dangerous than smoking or industrial pollution, but most people are in denial because radiation is invisible, said Jaclyn Tredway.

Tredway, who's been a teacher and a nurse, now administers holistic massages as part of her Body & Soul Wellness Island in Bradenton's Village of the Arts.

"I've always been in a mode of discovering, promoting, implementing things that have a positive effect on people's well-being," Tredway said.

It was with that motivation that she in January attended a conference in Carlsbad, Calif., where she learned about electropollution and, for the first time, heard about a public health scientist's research on cell phones and the danger of their electromagnetic fields.

However, not everyone agrees that there is a problem. The Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association in April issued a release stating that there's no scientific evidence showing a connection between cell phone use and adverse health effects.

The FDA said there's no proof that they don't. Either way, cell phones emit low levels of radio frequency when they're in use and very low levels when they're on and in standby mode.

"I had no idea until that conference how big a problem it is," Tredway said. In California, she and about 200 others saw George Carlo get emotional about the health risks associated with cell phone use. It's a topic that Carlo is passionate about.

An epidemiologist, he began a multiple-year, $28.5-million study in 1993 to determine whether cell phones are harmful to our health. The research was funded by the cell phone industry.

After conducting four years of testing and finding nothing out of the ordinary, Carlo started doing biofield testing, Tredway said. "That's when everything hit the fan."

A person's biofield is a part of wellness that was discovered about 12 years ago, Tredway said. It's an aura, an invisible halo around the body, according to balancingcenter.com. The biofield is intensified when a person is happy, and is diminished when the person is going through a difficult time, the Web site said. Tredway, a cell phone user who said using one is a way of life, wears a copper-colored medallion on a black string around her neck to strengthen her biofield.

In researching cell phones' affect on a person's biofield, Carlo discovered that cell phone use is dangerous and refused to go on with the study, Tredway said. He found that cell phone radiation disrupts pacemakers, seeps through children's skulls, weakens the blood-brain barrier - which controls the movement of substances from the blood into the central nervous system - and inflicts "genetic damage that is a known diagnostic marker for cancer," according to EMF-Health.com.

While Carlo found risks associated with cell phone radiation, he didn't have any solutions for the problem, Tredway said. Then he partnered with BioPro Technology, a company with the mission of enhancing the quality of life the world over, and formed the Safe Wireless Initiative in the hopes of exposing the hazards of cell phone use to the public.

"The mobile phone industry continues to deny the existence of a problem, and governments around the world continue to sort out both legal and ethical entanglements with the industry that render them impotent in terms of protecting consumers. Now, new science clearly shows that a radio frequency radiation related disease epidemic has begun - the brunt of which will be borne by our children and grandchildren," he's quoted as saying on SafeWireless.org.

Electropollution is caused not only by cell phone radiation, but also by radiation from microwaves and the electricity running through our homes, Tredway said. "We're swimming in this sea of electropollution."

Laut Berichten des izgmf zeigte sich am Rande des GuHT-Mobilfunkforums am 10. Mai in München Prof. Adlkofer außerordentlich zuversichtlich, dass die Reflex-Studie erfolgreich wiederholt werde. Immerhin hätten sich die beiden beteiligten Labore in Berlin (Prof. Tauber) und Wien (Prof. Rüdiger) ohnehin schon von Anfang an gegenseitig repliziert, so dass die Studie sicher sei. Inzwischen sei es auch Prof. Scherer (Uni Basel) gelungen, den Niederfrequenzteil der Reflex-Studie erfolgreich zu wiederholen, jetzt werde dort mit der Wiederholung des Hochfrequenzteils begonnen (Hinweis izgmf: Name und Uni entstammen dem unter schwierigen akustischen Bedingungen aufgenommenen Gedächtnisprotokoll, Abweichungen sind daher möglich). Außerdem sei man an der Uni Ulm noch damit beschäftigt, die Reflex-Studie nachzuvollziehen. ...

Auf die gelungene Wiederholung der Reflex-Studie angesprochen sagte Prof. Bernhardt: "Wenn es tatsächlich gelingt, Reflex im Reagenzglas zu wiederholen, dann haben wir ein Problem." In diesem Fall müsste das Ergebnis mit Tierversuchen verifiziert werden. Ließe sich daraus dann eine Gefährdung für Menschen ableiten, müssten die Grenzwerte gesenkt werden. Auf die Frage, wann dies bei positiven Befunden in der vorangegangenen Indizienkette der Fall sein könnte, sagte Bernhard: "…in vielleicht fünf Jahren." In Hinblick auf die Reflex-Replikation merkte der Wissenschaftler noch an, die EUAktion COST 281 wolle seines Wissens zufolge versuchen, das Resultat mit einer so genannten Ringstudie (mehrere unabhängige Labore) nachzuvollziehen.

Schnaid - „Wir brauchen noch mehr starke Bürgerinnen und Bürger, die Mut haben, der Mobilfunkindustrie und der Politik die Stirn zu bieten“, verlieh die Vorsitzende der Frauenliste in Stadt und Kreis Kronach, Petra Zenkel, am Freitag den „Goldenen Apfel an“ Monika Schuberth-Brehm. Die Auszeichnung war der Dank für deren unermüdlichen, couragierten und fachkundigen Einsatz, mit dem sie vor Gefahren der Mobilfunkstrahlung warnt.

In ihrer Laudatio betonte Vorsitzende Petra Zenkel, dass Monika Schuberth- Brehm es geschafft habe, mit Mitstreitern einen Mobilfunkmast in ihrem Heimatort Schnaid zu verhindern. Dabei habe sie Spott ertragen und den Widerstand der Obrigkeit durchbrochen. Durch ihren Einsatz habe sie sich darüber hinaus ein unglaubliches Fachwissen angeeignet. Sie führe Messungen bei Familien durch und investiere selbstlos Zeit und Geld. „Sie ist Idealistin mit ganz besonderen Eigenschaften.“

Gesundheitsrisiken

Zenkel zählte eine Reihe warnender, namhafter Stimmen auf. Sie forderte eine lückenlose Aufklärung und Information der Bürger/innen, Jugendlichen und Kinder über die Gefahren und Gesundheitsrisiken von Elektrosmog. Erfahrene Mediziner hätten „eine signifikante Häufung von Krankheiten in der Nähe von Mobilfunksendeanlagen“ belegt. Besonders Lern-, Konzentrations- und Verhaltensstörungen bei Kindern (Hyperaktivität), Blutdruckentgleisungen, Herzrhythmusstörungen, Herzinfarkte und Schlaganfälle immer jüngerer Menschen, Hirn/degenerative Erkrankungen, Krebserkrankungen wie Leukämie und Hirntumore, Kopfschmerzen und Migräne, chronische Erschöpfung, innere Unruhe, Schlaflosigkeit und Tagesmüdigkeit, Ohrengeräusche, Infektanfälligkeit, Nervenschädigungen, zählen Experten zu Folge zu den Symptomen und Krankheiten.

Hohe Strahlung

Im letzten Jahr, so Zenkel weiter, habe sie mit Dr. Cornelia Waldmann-Selsam Messungen im nördlichen Frankenwald durchgeführt. Das Ergebnis sei erschreckend gewesen. So befinde sich ein Mobilfunkmast in der Nähe einer Schule, eines Kindergartens und eines Tennisplatzes. Die Kinder und Sportler seien dort einer Strahlenbelastung von 2000 Microwatt ausgesetzt. Und im Kindergarten seien die Kinder im Bereich des schnurlosen Telefons 7000 Microwatt ausgesetzt. „Das Automobilwerk BMW erlaubt zum Schutz seiner Mitarbeiter am Arbeitsplatz lediglich 100 Microwatt pro Quadratmeter!“ Der Festakt wurde musikalisch umrahmt vom Klarinettenduo Julia Gleich und Lisa Spranger von der Musikschule Wallenfels.

Monika Schuberth-Brehm dankte für die Ehrung, die sie als Bestärkung und Motivation sieht, weiter zu kämpfen. Vor drei Jahren sei es für sie ein Schock gewesen, erfahren zu müssen, dass von großen Politikern keinerlei Hilfe zu erwarten sei.

Dennoch habe sich ihr Einsatz gelohnt, denn es habe sich einiges geändert. So dankte sie besonders auch Bürgermeister Peter Hänel und den Stadträten Wallenfels, die letztlich verantwortungsvolles Verhalten gezeigt hätten und einvernehmlich die Errichtung eines Mobilfunkmastes ablehnten. Ihr Appell lautete, weder DECT-Telefone noch Mikrowellengeräte im Haushalt und Handys nicht in geschlossenen Räumen zu nutzen. Der Schutz der Kinder liege allen sehr am Herzen. Daher müsse mehr geschehen.

Zu den ersten Gratulanten gehörten der Kreisvorsitzende der Freien Wähler, Hardy Hanuschke und Bürgermeister Peter Hänel. Hanuschke erinnerte an einen Antrag der FW aus dem Jahr 2004 an die bayerische Staatsregierung, sich mit der Thematik Mobilfunkstrahlung im Bundestag zu befassen. Geschehen sei leider nichts.
