EARTH HAS BECOME BRIGHTER, BUT NO ONE IS SURE WHY

by Kenneth Chang
New York Times
May 6, 2005

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/05/06/science/06bright.html

Reversing a decades-long trend toward "global dimming," Earth's surface has become brighter since 1990, scientists are reporting today.

The brightening means that more sunlight - and thus more heat - is reaching the ground. That could partly explain the record-high global temperatures reported in the late 1990's, and it could accelerate the planet's warming trend.

"We see the dimming is no longer there," said Dr. Martin Wild, a climatologist at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich and the lead author of one of three papers analyzing sunlight that appear in today's issue of the journal Science. "If anything, there is a brightening."

Some scientists have reported that from 1960 to 1990, the amount of sunshine reaching the ground decreased at a rate of 2 percent to 3 percent per decade.

In some places, the brightening of the 1990's has more than offset the dimming, Dr. Wild said. In other places, like Hong Kong, which lost more than a third of its sunlight, the dimming has leveled off, but skies remain darker than in the past. In a few places, like India, the dimming trend continues, he said.

The new papers also call attention to a major gap in the understanding of climate. Scientists do not exactly know what caused the dimming and the brightening, or how they affect the rest of the climate system.

Earth reflects about 30 percent of the incoming sunlight back into space. Slight changes in the reflectivity, possibly caused by changes in cloud cover and air pollution, can have as much impact on the climate as heat-trapping greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide.

Some scientists say that the dimming and the brightening might explain why for many years temperatures on Earth lagged what was predicted by many climate models and then shot upward more recently.

"I think what could have happened is the dimming between the 60's and 80's counteracted the greenhouse effect," Dr. Wild said. "When the dimming faded, the effects of the greenhouse gases became more evident. There is no masking by the dimming anymore."

But Dr. Rachel T. Pinker, a professor of meteorology at the University of Maryland who led the team that wrote one of the other papers, said the picture might not be so simple. More sunlight should increase evaporation rates, leading to more clouds, and the additional cloud cover could then increase Earth's reflectivity, limiting the warming effect.

"I think that's a complex issue," Dr. Pinker said. "There are many feedbacks involved."

The findings of Dr. Wild and his colleagues are based on data through 2001 from a network of ground-based sensors that directly measure the sunlight hitting the ground. But the sensors are not evenly distributed, with the greatest number in Europe, few in Africa and South America, and none covering the 70 percent of Earth's surface that is water.

Dr. Pinker's team analyzed satellite data from 1983 to 2001 that covered the globe. Its findings about brightening, which basically agree with Dr. Wild's, rely on computer models to estimate how much sunlight reaches the surface.

Finally, a team led by Dr. Bruce A. Wielicki of NASA's Langley Research Center in Virginia reports that measurements from the agency's Aqua satellite show a slight decrease in the amount of light reflected off Earth since 2000, which corresponds to a brightening on the surface.

The NASA findings conflict with measurements, reported last year, suggesting that Earth had resumed dimming since 2000. Those measurements looked at the illumination of the dark side of the Moon by light reflected off Earth.

Dr. Philip R. Goode, a professor of physics at the New Jersey Institute of Technology who was one of the researchers behind last year's report, said it was not clear why the findings differed so markedly. "We've been working with them to understand the origins of the differences," Dr. Goode said of the Wielicki group.

Dr. Wielicki said his data supported a report last month by a team led by Dr. James E. Hansen of the Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York. In a paper published on Science's Web site, Dr. Hansen and his colleagues said much of the excess heat generated by global warming has been stored in the oceans. Even if no more greenhouse gases are added to the atmosphere, they said, Earth will continue to warm by 1 degree Fahrenheit over the coming decades, as the heat in the oceans is released into the air.

Dr. Wielicki said the amount of energy coming from the Sun matched the gain in heat in the oceans reported by Dr. Hansen. "It is consistent with the ocean heat storage that the oceanographers are seeing," Dr. Wielicki said, "and it is consistent with the climate models' predictions of what the heat storage should be."

Dr. Robert J. Charlson, a professor of atmospheric sciences at the University of Washington and an author of a commentary that accompanied the three papers, said, "This set of papers, taken together, calls attention for more emphasis on research in these topics."

But he added, "Unfortunately, impediments have come up." Four years' worth of data from the Earth Radiation Budget Satellite is unanalyzed, he said, because there is no money for scientists to work with it.

Another satellite, the Deep Space Climate Observatory, which was scheduled to be launched on a space shuttle, awaits in storage. Proposed budget cuts in earth science research at NASA could limit the analysis of data from other satellites, Dr. Charlson said.

The Dumbing Down Of The American Mind

by Doug Soderstrom
23 April, 2005
Countercurrents.org

There is a very dangerous phenomenon that seems to be occurring in the United States of America; something that I refer to as “the dumbing-down of the American mind,” a nearly willful tendency for Americans to forgo reality in favor of believing what they want to believe. But how could such a thing have occurred in such a proud nation, one that, according to George Bush, has become known as a bastion of freedom and democracy, a bright light for the whole world to see?

In my opinion, there are five factors that can explain such a phenomenon. [...] Read all about it at: http://www.countercurrents.org/us-soderstrom230405.htm or http://tinyurl.com/cua57

Hitting the Middle Class, Again

TODAY'S EDITORIALS
Published: May 3, 2005
The New York Times

As he moved into the home stretch of his 60-day Social Security road show last week, it became clear that President Bush had saved the worst for last.

Mr. Bush endorsed a proposal that would take a huge bite out of the Social Security retirement benefits for the middle class, claiming that would close some 70 percent of the system's financing gap. That figure is almost certainly overstated. Under the proposed reductions, young workers who now earn about $36,000 would face a 16 percent cut; those earning about $58,000 would face a cut of 25 percent, and those earning $90,000, 29 percent. People not yet in the work force would face even larger reductions. [..] Read the rest at:

Filibuster Frist

New Leaders Council

Have you heard what's happening at Princeton?

Students have initiated a protest against Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist's plan to end the filibuster and prevent Senate Democrats from stopping extremist judicial nominations. The "Filibuster Frist" protest, taking place in front of Princeton's Frist Campus Center (that's right - paid for by the Tennessee Senator's family) is still going strong after a full week. The mock filibuster has gained national attention and has put pressure on the Senate Republican Leader.

When Filibuster Frist began, students had no idea what kind of success they would have. They hoped to make some waves at Senator Frist’s alma mater; but it was clear after a couple days that this was going to have far-reaching ripple effects. Picking up momentum, students began congregating in droves to the filibuster, offering no shortage of help. Soon enough, local and state press had picked up on the story and calls of support were coming in from across the nation. Now that it's clear that his controversial private-paid trips abroad will be put under a microscope in Congress, Tom DeLay is in serious danger of being declared in violation of House ethics rules, legal experts say.

Lawyers who specialize in ethics cases believe that the Republican House majority leader from Texas might be in technical breach of at least a few congressional regulations. According to published reports, a registered foreign agent paid for one of DeLay's overseas trips and a registered lobbyist used his credit card to pay for another foreign airfare -- actions the rules prohibit. Like almost every other mainstream U.S. media outlet, the New York Times has provided little coverage of Vanunu, so the American public has scant knowledge of his real-life experience with truth and consequences. Likewise, the Times has little to say about Washington's extreme hypocrisies while the newspaper and the government denounce certain other countries for their nuclear programs. Once more, we dip our ladle into the alphabet soup of character. Only this time the letter that keeps coming up is B for Bully. Ever since John Bolton was nominated to be US ambassador to the United Nations, he's been described as abrasive, brash, difficult. He's been called a 'serial abuser' of underlings and a 'quintessential kiss-up, kick-down sort of guy.' Questions about whether he has the T for Temperament to be our diplomat to the world body now have his nomination teetering. I got into this character cookbook business way back in the 1970s when there was a subversive little motto that said, 'The personal is political.' ... It suggested something about our political leaders. Character was a matter of private as well as public behavior. How our leaders behaved to their families, office staff, and underlings said something about who they were and how they would treat the rest of us...

Lessons we (should have) learned in Vietnam

This week marks the 30th anniversary of America's ignominious withdrawal from Vietnam in helicopters from the roof of the American Embassy in Saigon. The South Vietnamese capital, soon to be renamed Ho Chi Minh City, fell to Communist forces on April 30, 1975. President Ford proclaimed the end of the war on May 7. Not since the Civil War 100 years before had the country been so divided. What lessons have we learned, or should we have learned, from the Vietnam experience? * Be sure there is a solid, enduring national consensus about where the national interest lies. ... * Be sure it is the US national interest that drives involvement and not the national interest of another country. ... * Think the problem through: Are we going to stick with our original policy even though it turns out to be mistaken?" The last 58.5 million acres of untouched national forests, which President Clinton had set aside for protection, were opened to possible logging, mining and other commercial uses by the Bush administration on Thursday. New rules from the U.S. Forest Service cover some of the most pristine federal land in 38 states and Puerto Rico. Ninety-seven percent of it is in 12 states: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming...

Injured Iraqi murdered from soldiers, cheering and talking about how "cool" it is

This is so sick I can’t begin to describe it.

This is exactly the kind of footage people need to see. Spread it around!!

It's graphic, but necessary. This is but a small taste of what war is, always has been, and always will be about. Not ideology, not bringing "freedom" to those "less fortunate", not moving blips on a radar screen or graphed statistics, but real human death and the warping of soldiers' minds.

End it. And not just in Iraq (UFPJ). Everywhere!

Mast protesters stage soccer ground clash

Here is one we helped to get rid of! I only heard today that the council refused permission after careful consideration i.e. two press releases from Mast Sanity and several blunt letters to the council and landlord! More to do here though as they have 7 masts and one TETRA up and running!

Yorshire Evening Post (Leeds)

Mast protesters stage soccer ground clash

By Bruce Smith

A CROWD of amateur soccer fans was confronted by demonstrators protesting over plans for a new mast for police mobile phones at a Leeds football club.

When Yorkshire Amateur FC played the final match of the season against Carlton FC at their Bracken Edge ground at Leeds, demonstrators backed by the national campaign group, Mast Sanity, turned out in force to protest at the plan for the 25-metre high Tetra mast.

Waving banners and shouting: "No More Masts," the demonstrators received a mixed response, including beeps of support from drivers, said local residents spokeswoman Jill Harland.

Residents believe the mast, which if approved would have nine antennae, could be a threat to the health of residents and in particular children. The mast is to be installed by Airwave 02 to provide the new police service communications system.

Mast Sanity claims it is being left to ordinary people, like the residents of Bracken Edge and the Roxholmes in Chapel Allerton, to protect their communities as best they can from masts. It has urged the Government to act on the Stewart Report, which highlighted the vulnerability of children to emissions from masts. Before the protest a spokeswoman, said: "If Yorkshire Amateur CFC want to build up support they'd be well advised to listen to what the community is telling them and refuse this Tetra mast."

"We want the football club to stop playing games with our health," said Ms Harland. "The score is already in the opposition's favour, but there comes a time when health is more important than wealth."
Evidence

If approved, the new Tetra mast will be the ninth such installation locally. "There is mounting evidence of ill health among communities living near masts," says Mast Sanity health and safety adviser Yasmin Skelt. "We need urgent action to control the number of masts."

Residents claim the backing of the Labour parliamentary candidate for the Leeds North East seat, Fabian Hamilton. Other candidates are: Jonathan Brown for the Lib Dems, Celia Foote for the Alliance for Green Socialism, and Matthew Lobley for the Conservatives.

Stop Canada's Cruel and Senseless Seal Hunt

ActForChange and Working Assets are proud to bring you an urgent alert from CARE2, the largest online network for people who Care2 make a difference. This urgent action calls on the Canadian government to end the cruel and senseless seal hunt, the largest deliberate slaughter of marine mammals in the world.

I urge you to take action below in support of ending this tragic hunt. Together, we are making a difference.

Stop Canada's Cruel and Senseless Seal Hunt!

Nearly 1 million baby seals will be clubbed or shot to death in Canada in just three years. Shockingly, the hunt is subsidized by the Canadian government!

http://act.actforchange.com/cgi-bin7/DM/y/hfYq0IEmZM0PD50ybV0Ex

Every winter, Northwest Atlantic harp seals migrate to Eastern Canada to give birth and mate. Following their birth in late winter, mothers leave in search of mates, while the pups remain helpless and vulnerable on the ice until they can swim and catch their own food. It's during this time when they are most vulnerable that they are mercilessly slaughtered for their pelts!

Hunters armed with clubs and rifles will bludgeon to death hundreds of thousands of baby harp seals. About 96% of the seals killed will be less than three months old and more than 40% may be skinned alive!

Canada's seal hunt is the largest deliberate slaughter of marine mammals in the world. But the killing of baby seals doesn't make sense economically or ecologically, nor is it sustainable. It's simply a tragic slaughter of defenseless animals that benefits a small minority of boat captains armed with big ships, snowmobiles and even personal helicopters. This isn't about small town survival or tradition, it's an industrial killing machine for profit.

But Canada wants the media and public to believe that no one cares about the innocent blood spilled each year across the Gulf of St. Lawrence. This year's hunt will continue until the industry reaches its quota of 319,500 seals. That's why we must raise a public outcry.

Please tell the Canadian government that you do care and that this practice is unacceptable. We must show the Canadian Parliament that the rest of the world will no longer stand for this cruel and senseless hunt!

The Bush deception has cost over a hundred thousand lives (according to peer reviewed article in "The Lancet"), $300Bn, and the remnants of this nation's international credibility. The US is ideologically isolated at a key moment in history.

Indeed, Iraq is another Vietnam, and is taking our eyes away from other critical news: peak oil, global warming, species extinction, etc. There was never the time for this distraction, as will become clear over the next few years. Sister Dorothy Stang Remembered

On Saturday, February 12, Sister Dorothy Stang, a 73 year-old American nun who had lived for more than 30 years in the Amazon rainforest, was assassinated. Dorothy had dedicated nearly half of her life to giving a voice to rural communities working for land rights and sustainable development in the Amazon rainforests.

Because of her advocacy, she often received death threats from unruly landgrabbers throughout the state of Para, an area plagued with violence resulting from ongoing land disputes and illegal logging.

Amidst international outcry over this tragedy, Brazil's President Lula da Silva recently ordered the creation of two massive new rainforest reserves http://www.ran.org/news/newsitem.php?id=1336&area=home totaling more than 9 million acres in the state of Para.

JP Morgan Chase and BlueLinx linked to illegal logging of endangered forests and resulting humanitarian crisis

Investigation Finds "IMD" In Indonesia

JP Morgan Chase and BlueLinx linked to illegal logging of endangered forests and resulting humanitarian crisis.

http://www.ran.org/news/newsitem.php?id=1345&area=home

Ongoing investigations by Rainforest Action Network and Greenpeace confirmed that BlueLinx, America's largest building products distributor, is smuggling legally disputed, undocumented timber out of Indonesia's critically endangered rainforests and flooding the U.S. marketplace with artificially cheap lauan plywood. Bluelinx is funded by JP Morgan Chase, a US-based bank that has built its financial empire on making Investments of Mass Destruction.

An "IMD of the Month" case study published on DirtyMoney.org http://www.dirtymoney.org/studies/jpmc-bluelinx.php details the trafficking of undocumented wood by current BlueLinx suppliers throughout Indonesia.

Illegal logging throughout Indonesia continues to cause widespread devastation to the region's tropical rainforests and neighboring communities. Indonesian Ministry of Forestry reports that 43 million hectares of the country's forests have been damaged or destroyed over the last several decades due to illegal logging, with the average annual deforestation rate estimated at more than 2.8 million hectares (7 million acres) since 1998. These forests are some of the most biodiverse on Earth, and are home to a variety of threatened and endangered species, including the rare Indonesian orangutan. In addition, illegal logging has been blamed for massive flooding and landslides throughout Indonesia.

The ongoing devastation has been well-documented by the Indonesian Ministry of Forests, Yale School of forestry, Environmental investigation Agency, and Business Week Magazine.

RAN is calling on JP Morgan Chase and BlueLinx to immediately comply with a voluntary corporate embargo of Indonesian forest products already in place by Centex Corporation, International Paper and Lanoga Corporation.

Thin ice

You'd think that crossing the Arctic would be less dangerous in the summer. But in fact, thin ice and a warming climate make it far more treacherous.

On 13 May, explorers Lonnie Dupre and Eric Larsen will leave on a four-month unsupported expedition across the Arctic Ocean. Enduring shifting sea ice, these explorers will attempt one of the toughest feats in history. This journey however, is more than a story about heroism and adventure. Using skis and canoes, the team will cross the ice from Cape Arctichesky, Siberia, through the North Pole and onto Ellesmere Island, Canada, to document the impacts of global warming and highlight the threat it presents -- not only to the region, but to our entire planet.

While you may not be able to join Lonnie and Eric, you can still do your part to stop global warming. Watch for global action alerts at Greenpeace USA's website covering the expedition.

WHO CAN TRUST THE COUNCIL OF HEALTH OF THE INDEPENDENT COMMUNITY OF MADRID?

We have known the efforts the Associations of Neighbors of Madrid and Alcala de Henares to defend the interests of the affected ones by electromagnetic contamination and concretely by the antennas of mobile telephony and for that reason we congratulated to them. One finishes sending note to us of press of the Association of Neighbors of Alcala de Henares and we want to make some detailing. The Council of Health and Consumption of the Community of Madrid seems to not know its strict competitions in the matter of health within the Community and prefers to take refuge in the trusteeship of the State Administration, thus to dilute its own responsibilities in the matter. It sends to the associations of Neighbors a communication in which indicates that they have gone to the Minister of Health sending to him a letter, of whose content advances some paragraph. We cannot be removed two questions: * A priori negation of the evidences. * Tactics of resisted delay. ·A priori negation of the evidences: It says the Council of Health of the Community of Madrid that "... being an interrogative subject that provokes manifold and preoccupations in the population at national level, although the scientific community knows clearly criterion on the matter... "Who says that the scientific community knows clearly the criterion on the matter? Money could be saved the WHO, the European Community and hundreds of Institutions that continue their investigations. Which is the criterion of the scientific community on the matter? It is accepting the Community of Madrid, finally, the conclusions of the Declaration of Alcala of May of 2002; the conclusions of the Call of Freiburg - October 2002; the Conclusions of Professor Roger Santini, April 2004; the Conclusions of the Declaration of Helsinki - January 2005 when they alert of the nonthermal effects of the nonionizing radiations? Who form leaves from the scientific community to which the Council of Health of the Community of Madrid talks about? Presumed official investigators under suspicion to protect the interests of the companies (when it is necessary we give names) or the investigators that are related to excrupuloso detail in the Document answer to the "Study Epidemiologist in the school Garci'a Quintana" made by the Council of Health and Social welfare public (Castile-Leon) the 20 of November of 2001, elaborated from the parents of students of the Public School Garcia Quintana of Valladolid. To affirm that the scientific community knows clearly the criterion on the nonionizing radioactivity is a joy not at all scientist; it is an ignorance of the thousands of serious studies that refer injurious effects to us for the health, derivatives of the nonionizing radioactivity and of electromagnetic fields; it is to ningunear the pain many and, in any case... it supposes clear a supposed one of recusación: So that it helps us who a priori it gives by discounted which there is nothing on which to work... God frees to us of similar aid. ·Tactics of resisted delay. It says the Council of Health of the Community of Madrid that "... it could be interesting the design and beginning of a study epidemiologist at national level, at which from this Council we would lend the Maximal collaboration." Why a study epidemiologist at national level when zones next to antennas can be studied and to compare its data with zones of residence that they have more far or they do not have antennas in its tile roofs? Why a study epidemiologist long play when what is denounced it is that one is becoming ill and dying people? That they go to Móstoles and they see! The neighbors of Almaraz and the localities in surroundings of 40 km of the frontier Nuclear power station still are waiting for a study epidemiologist who takes a means and year delay more and, according to revealed Mercedes Milá in the Daily program of... a threat Nuclear power station, when he went to interview the Spokesman of the Nuclear Security Council, all we could verify that the assumption study epidemiologist still was in phase of planning. Ah, and a warning respect to the meeting with the Chief of a main directorate of Public Health. Who can lose minutes she could see the sad role that Secretary General played of the Ministry of Health, Fernando Lamata, in interview of Mercedes emitted Milá east Tuesday in Tele Five: It affirmed that in a Centre of Reference the substances were analysed that a cigarette contained and in the Centre of Reference it was recognized that they did not analyse but that three components. Conclusion: Good connoisseur of which he makes his Secretariat General and the dependent organs or a good occultation of the evidences. http://www.telecinco.es/dn_5200.htm To the Meeting of Castile and Leon ordered Judge to him Instructor of the case Garci'a Quintana of Valladolid that made a study epidemiologist. It was never made and the penal case was filed, even in spite of counting on a total balance of cases of infantile leukaemia not sufficiently known and on a balance cases of cancer in adults within the zone of influence of the antennas also not known. If somebody wants that truths are not hidden to him and asks for studies epidemiologists, we suggested before know the data the own ones interested so that nobody manipulates the results. If somebody asks for measurements it must be sure that that will measure microwatios/cm2 can quantify values with sensitivity of 0.01 and to know the difference between limits legally allowed by an obsolete and desconocedora legislation all whichever studies they have become from 1999, and limits over which already have been proven injurious effects for the health of the people. When the authorities request measurements or when they offer them the companies the only thing that are persecuted is to credit that it is within the effective legality, although that legality does not suppose security so some and as already the Report alerted in 2001 to the European Parliament of Doctor G. When I said I would send her the link to the C-span program (before I made these excerpts), I alerted her that the link takes about 3-4 minutes to load, given that it is 90 min.long.

She replied by saying that, in that case, it is going to have to wait until she had nothing else to do before she listened!

I WAS STUNNED!

Here I am providing a US citizen with disturbing evidence about what, perhaps, could be considered a most alarming aspects of our government... which now had to wait until "she had nothing else (better?) to do"!

Does anyone wonder then, how it is that "the powers that be" can get away with something as unbelievable as complicity with 9/11?

You see, what she could not tie up was that, if covert groups in our government were willing to sacrifice the lives of 3,000 people on 9/11, what problems would they have getting rid of half, of not only our population, but that of our planet as well... if they deemed it necessary to hold on to their power?

The latest case, the murder of Jeong Im , brought the total up to 40 deaths in the last 4 years, said Quayle. He theorized that a group of people plan to unleash "the ultimate epidemic" on the planet and are trying to eliminate scientists who might successfully combat it.

About Mandate for Bush, GOP

by John F. Harris and Jim VandeHei
Washington Post Staff Writers
Monday, May 2, 2005; Page A01

The day after he won a second term in November, President Bush offered his view of the new political landscape.

"When you win there is a feeling that the people have spoken and embraced your point of view," he said, "and that's what I intend to tell the Congress, that I made it clear what I intend to do as president . . . and the people made it clear what they wanted, now let's work together."

Six months ago, this comment was widely viewed as more than just a postgame boast. Among campaign strategists and academics, there was ample speculation that Bush's victory, combined with incremental gains in the Republican congressional majority, signaled something fundamental: a partisan and ideological "realignment" that would reshape politics over the long haul. Bush faces Republican resistance on Social Security

by Adam Entous
Mon May 2, 2005 10:14 PM ET Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush's plan to shore up Social Security by reducing promised benefits for all but low-income retirees is meeting resistance from some Senate Republicans, casting new doubt on Bush's top domestic priority, Republican aides and officials said.

A USA Today/CNN poll released on Monday also showed Bush with the worst approval-disapproval ratings of his presidency -- 35 percent to 58 percent -- on the Social Security issue. The proposal he backed last week for "progressive indexing" was opposed 54 percent to 38 percent. [...] Read the rest at:

Pentagon says Iraq war erodes military's abilities

by Will Dunham
Tue May 3, 2005 06:11 PM ET
Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. military's operations in Iraq and Afghanistan have constrained its ability to tackle other potential conflicts, making any future war more likely to be longer and bloodier, according to America's top general.

In an annual classified report required by Congress, Air Force Gen. Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said stress on manpower and equipment could limit the ability to win other possible wars as quickly as the Pentagon had previously forecast, defense officials said on Tuesday.

Myers stated in the report that U.S. armed forces would "succeed" in any future major conflict but "may be unable to meet expectations for speed or precision." [...] Read the rest at:

The Instrument of Global Control - What Chemtrails Really Are

There are two plans that Tesla had for providing energy. One for production and one for wireless distribution of energy. I will give a cursory explanation of each as I understand them. Tesla's plan for wireless energy was based on pumping AC current into the atmosphere polarized so that the return path of the current was through the air rather than through the ground. The way it was supposed to work was that the hot end of an electrical system in a building say, would be connected to the earth and the cold end would be connected to some sort of antenna which would drain the current off into the air thus making a complete circuit.

What is really interesting about Tesla's work though was some of the work he did Colorado on power generation. The basic premise was this: that the earth and the ionosphere were like the plates of a giant capacitor with the air in between acting as the dialectric. His theory was that if you could use a bolt of electricity to bore up through the air to the ionosphere then the current from the ionosphere would flow back to the earth because of its lower voltage potential (the ionosphere has a voltage potential of around 250 kilovolts and the earth has a voltage potential of a few thousand at most). Once the hole was made in the atmosphere current would continue to flow until it was interrupted or the potential voltages became equalized. It has been recently observed that lightning in fact does this. The ionosphere is constantly recharged by the solar wind so the supply of electricity would be virtually unlimited. Apparently he was successful, but his financier at the time (it was either Morgan or Westinghouse) was outraged because he thought there would be no way to meter and sell it, so he sent some goons to the lab and they destroyed it. Wireless electricity would actually be just as easy to meter as wired, all you would have to do is put a meter on the return antenna. (It would however be a small matter to build one's own unmetered return antenna...)

On your second point about the spraying of biological and toxic agents, there were several fairly well documented incedents in the 60's where the CIA did "experimental" releases. One was from a ship off the west coast near San Francisco where they released bacterial aerosol from a ship basically to see if it could be done. I believe that 11 people died and hundreds became ill IIRC. I'll see if I can find some links.... There were also incedents in New York and Florida and people died there as well. The bacterial agent they used was not super lethal and not particularly contagious. Thet were just "testing" you see...

Iraq, Afghanistan Wars Preventing Proactive Moves

The strains imposed by the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have made it far more difficult for the U.S. military to beat back new acts of aggression, launch a pre-emptive strike or prevent conflict in another part of the world, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff concluded in a classified analysis presented to Congress today.

Army Recruiters Say They Feel Pressure to Bend Rules

It was late September when the 21-year-old man, fresh from a three-week commitment in a psychiatric ward, showed up at an Army recruiting station in southern Ohio. The two recruiters there wasted no time signing him up, and even after the man's parents told them he had bipolar disorder - a diagnosis that would disqualify him - he was all set to be shipped to boot camp, and perhaps Iraq after that, before senior officers found out and canceled the enlistment.

Traumatic Brain Injuries in Soldiers Often Go Undetected

Since Operation Iraqi Freedom began two years ago, the Department of Defense reports that more than 1,500 U.S. soldiers have died and more than 11-thousand American troops have been wounded. Among the most debilitating wounds are traumatic brain injuries. One of the nation's leading brain treatment centers is the Veteran's Affairs hospital in Palo Alto, California. Within the confines of the sprawling VA campus, veterans of World War II and the Vietnam war work on rehabilitation alongside returning soldiers from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Whose crisis is this, anyway?

The most accurate explanation of the Bush Administration's big-government tendencies is likely a peculiar mixture of ideology, political reality, and median voter theory. But such analyses have no ability to stir men's souls, and [Andrew] Sullivan's explanation does this quite well. For him the skeptical (libertarian) conservatives are being hounded out of the party by a cabal of religious fundamentalism...

Gas price demagoguery

05/04/05

Spring may well be my favorite season. But in addition to ushering in bright flowers and warmer days, it is also the season of renewed displays of economic ignorance and political demagoguery centered on everyone's favorite gripe: higher gasoline prices. When housing prices zoom upward, as they have done recently in many areas of the country, people consider this a sign of good times -- especially if you are a home owner. But when gas prices zoom upward, this is a sign of conspiracy, fraud, and 'price gouging...

The evangelical crusade marches on

05/04/05

Many religious people are, no doubt, reacting against what they perceive as the triumph of subjectivism, relativism, and nihilism in various aspects of popular culture. But in celebrating their own isolation from that culture, they make possible the further alienation of young people from a world that demands their rational engagement. Worse: the embracing of instrinsicism, which inculcates a faith-based adherence to moral 'absolutes' regardless of context, is no genuine alternative. Humane values are passed on to children and young people by appealing to their growing, yet delicate, rational faculties. Reason is the only legitimate alternative to faith and force. And teaching children to use their minds is the surest way to raise healthy and happy adults...

45 days. That's all the time that passed between the attack on the World Trade Center and President Bush signing into law the USA PATRIOT Act. With little dissent, and even less actual debate, federal law enforcement agencies managed to get a huge laundry list of long coveted new powers. How did they manage to avoid debate? Besides the excellent timing of the request, many of the most intrusive measures were couched as temporary provisions needed only for the present emergency, and it was promised that they would expire at the end of 2005. Of course there was never any intention of actually letting those expirations happen...

Government tested AIDS drugs on foster kids

05/04/05

Government-funded researchers tested AIDS drugs on hundreds of foster children over the past two decades, often without providing them a basic protection afforded in federal law and required by some states, an Associated Press review has found. The research, funded by the National Institutes of Health ... was most widespread in the 1990s as foster care agencies sought treatments for their HIV-infected children that weren't yet available in the marketplace. The practice ensured that foster children -- mostly poor or minority -- received care from world-class researchers at government expense, slowing their rate of death and extending their lives. But it also exposed a vulnerable population to the risks of medical research and drugs that were known to have serious side effects in adults and for which the safety for children was unknown...

Press Freedom Day recalls those who died doing jobs

There was no freedom for Shi Tao and Florence Aubenas on World Press Freedom Day, or for Dawit Isaak, or for Marie-Jeanne Ion, or for Ricardo Gonzalez Alfonso, or for ... But they were remembered Tuesday. Even in press-hostile countries, journalists held marches and sit-ins to demand an end to the threats media workers face: killings, prison, kidnapping, government censorship and other abuses. The list of reporters in jail, held hostage or killed on the job was particularly long this year -- in part because of the violence in Iraq. The number of dead is higher than it has been in a decade. ... 'This has been an extremely bad year for press freedom,' said Robert Menard, president of Reporters Without Borders. 'Of course, it's in Iraq that the majority of journalists are dying. But there also are journalists being killed in Peru, Mexico, the Philippines -- outside of war zones.' Airline passengers to be asked for data

05/04/05

Airline passengers soon will be asked to provide their full names and birth dates when they buy tickets, information the government says it needs for a new computerized screening system. The Bush administration is moving ahead with plans to implement the system, called Secure Flight, even though concerns about privacy and other issues raised in a congressional investigation have not been fully addressed. A limited rollout of the program is set for later this year. As part of the Transportation Security Administration's effort to implement Secure Flight, the agency will, within weeks, require airlines to solicit passengers' full names and birth dates. Passengers do not have to provide it, but if they don't there's a better chance they'll have to undergo more stringent screening at the airport, said Justin Oberman, the TSA official who heads the program. Oberman said having passengers' full names and birth dates will make it less likely that they'll be confused with people who are known or suspected terrorists."[Editor's note: Gee, how about fingerprints and a retina scan?-MLS]

Vorsicht: EU-Verfassung - Ungewöhnlich scharfe Kritik wegen EU-Verfassung

http://hh-online.net/eu/
