Commission Says No To Rosedale Substation

The Floyd County Commission unanimously rejected a bid from the North Georgia Electric membership Co-Op for an electric substation on the New Rosedale Rd. just east of Haywood Valley Rd.

Nine citizens voiced opposition to the project during a public hearing Tuesday night. Several citizens expressed concerns that electromagnetic fields have been linked to increased risk of childhood leukemia.

Henry Tharpe, and attorney for the North Georgia EMC said that the substation would not have created any more of an electromagnetic field than the existing high voltage transmission lines at the site, but the commission said no.

Fighting powers that are

Titirangi locals raise the stakes in their campaign against a substation. Helen Laurent reports.

Louise McLeod came from England to live a clean, green lifestyle.

She and her husband chose Titirangi with its native bush as the place where they wanted to raise their children as outdoor-loving Kiwis.

Mrs McLeod fears that dream is over with Vector's proposal to build an electrical substation at 515 South Titirangi Rd, 30m from the kindergarten her child attends.

Community should be cautious on cell towers

I hope parents aren't being misled by a recent front-page story in the Arizona Daily Star ("TUSD scraps West Side cell-phone tower plans," Aug. 23). As the article indicates, Robins Elementary Principal Elizabeth Minno said the tower issue "might be brought up for discussion in the future."

I have worked on this issue for more than 12 years, both in the United States and internationally. As the article states, the debate at Robins is "a microcosm of one taking place nationwide, and it's not limited to schools. Sometimes, it's neighborhood and homeowner associations that balk at the installations," and for good reason.

Increasingly, neurological symptoms are being reported in communities where wireless transmitters are located, including poor concentration, memory loss, depression, headaches, sleep problems, as well as cancers and other diseases.
