The award-winning Earth Report series goes back on the trail of the bushmeat poachers in Central Africa. This time the trail leads to timber companies. Some do practice model environmental safeguards, but even so it seems that once a road is built to get hardwood out, nothing can save the wildlife. One company offers its workers beef at below market prices. Despite measures like this it seems that many people in Central Africa prefer to eat the rapidly vanishing wildlife. In this part of the world elephants are more menaced by demand for their meat than their ivory.

Convened at the British House of Commons, the debate attracted high level participants from conservation organisations and the timber industry. Some of the more conservative environmental groups are accused of appeasing the timber companies. A Ugandan participant says that Africa would be better off if the international groups pulled out and the resources they consume are left to indigenous NGOs to use.

Appeals court halts logging in forest burned by 2002 fire

A federal appeals court on Tuesday blocked logging of old-growth forest scorched in one of the nation's largest wildfires until a lawsuit brought by environmentalists is decided, making it unlikely the dead trees can be harvested before rotting.

Regenwälder: Handel verkauft weiterhin Tropenholz-Gartenmöbel aus Raubbau

Auch in der kommenden Saison werden auf dem deutschen Markt Gartenmöbel aus Tropenholz erhältlich sein. Diese Bilanz zieht die Umweltorganisation Robin Wood nach Recherchen auf der internationalen Gartenmöbelmesse Spoga, die gestern in Köln zu Ende ging. Ein erheblicher Teil der auf der Messe präsentierten Holzmöbel sei aus tropischen Hölzern gewesen, so die Organisation. Etliche Händler, die auch den deutschen Markt bedienten würden dabei unter anderem Holz aus den letzten Urwäldern Indonesiens zu vermarkten oder Teak aus Burma, durch dessen Verkauf sich das dortige Militärregime mit Devisen versorge.

Exportiert: Unternehmen verarbeiten Holz aus unklarer Herkunft

In zahlreichen Unternehmen stammen Holzlieferungen aus unklaren Quellen. Das ist das Ergebnis einer Untersuchung des WWF. Die Tierschutzorganisation hatte verarbeitetes und exportiertes Holz der deutschen Holzgroßhändlern untersucht. Dabei stammen laut WWF-Angaben in vielen Unternehmen die Holzlieferungen aus unklaren Quellen. Das gehe soweit, dass die Hersteller zum Teil ihre Lieferanten nicht nennen könnten. Besonders betroffen sei der Holzhandel aus Nordwest-Russland - mit rund 774 Millionen Hektar bilden die russischen Wälder etwa ein Fünftel der weltweiten Waldflächen. In dieser Region boome der illegale Handel.
