UK Health warning on mobile use by 91% of preteens - Experts warn parents over giving mobile phones to children

The Evening Standard (London) September 19, 2006 Tuesday

Health warning on mobile use by 91% of preteens

BYLINE: MARK PRIGG

PARENTS were warned today about the dangers of giving their children a mobile phone.

As a survey revealed that 91 per cent of 12-year-olds now have a mobile, the Health Protection Agency called for parents to limit their use.

“If there are risks - and we think that there could be - then the people who are going to be most affected are children,” said Dr Jill Meara of the Health Protection Agency. “We would call on parents to make sure they examine all the evidence before deciding if they will give their children a phone. “They do have a benefit but nothing in life is without some hazards, and you need to weigh the benefits against the potential risks. We will not know for several years what the real risks of mobile phones are.”

There are fears that the electromagnetic radiation emitted from handsets may harm health. In particular, there have been claims that it could affect the body’s cells, brain or immune system and increase the risk of developing a range of diseases from cancer to Alzheimer’s. The government advises a ” precautionary approach” and Dr Meara warned children to limit the time they spend on the phone. She said: “If you’re going to have an hour-long chat with your boyfriend, do it on a landline. It’s also worth sending a text instead if you can, as that cuts the amount of time you are exposed to radiation.”

Mobile phone companies today claimed that increased use has helped children communicate more effectively.

“The mobile has become the most important electronic device for young people in the UK today,” said Charles Dunstone, chief executive officer of The Carphone Warehouse Group, which commissioned the study. “It provides them with a social network, a sense of security and access to entertainment. But most importantly it provides them with a sense of belonging to their peer group.”

The HPA called for government leaflets outlining the potential risk of mobile phones to be given to every buyer. “These leaflets were available a few years ago, but seem to have disappeared,” said Dr Meara. “They really need an update.”

The study found that just a quarter of 11 to 17-year-olds are worried that their mobile phone might harm their health, compared to one third of parents.

Most young people also admitted they were concerned their phone put them at risk from muggers.

The Mobile Operators Association, which represents all the UK’s mobile networks, said the decision on whether to have a phone was up to parents. “Mobile technology offers reassurance to parents and children who value being able to stay in touch with one another,” said a spokesman. “Parents can weigh these benefits against health concerns. All mobile phones sold in the UK comply with international health and safety exposure guidelines adopted by the European Council of Health Ministers in 1999.”

The British government is now in pressure about what it had done, putting millions of children at risk by advancing an unsafe technology, but leaves the parents to take the responsibility: "you need to weigh the benefits against the potential risks". "examine all the evidence" but where can they find the info? Should the parents go to read Medline? Or will the government tell them that they are sold things that can break DNA and kill neurons? How are they supposed to "examine all the evidence"?

At risk? Experts warn parents over giving mobile phones to children

Gary

Your recent article (The Argus, October 4th) about mobile phones for children reported outdated advice by Sir William Stewart of the National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB) on the subject.

The NRPB has been superceded by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) in regulating the health effects of mobile phones and the vast range of other microwave devices on the market.

The article failed to disclose recent announcements by Dr Jill Meara of the HPA, who said: "If there are risks - and we think that there could be - then the people who are going to be most affected are children," and "We will not know for several years what the real risks of mobile phones are."

Pakistan, Poland and Austria long ago banned children under 16 from using mobiles due to health concerns and the UK Government officially recommends they only use them in emergencies.

In America, from 1993 for six years, the Communications Industry employed 200 research doctors, at a cost of $28.5 million – to study the safety of their microwave systems. In all, 15 epidemiological studies were carried out.

They showed increased tumours, genetic damage, a greater risk to children, and damage to the blood-brain barrier; The research scientist leading these studies has predicted 30,000-50,000 cancers worldwide this year alone - of just one type of cancer. And this is the industry's own research.

The safety level set by our Government for masts, which emit identical microwave radiation to phones, is for short-term heating effects only, and is incorrectly relied upon by decision-makers for planning applications for masts.

Both the International Commission for Electromagnetic Safety and the US Environmental Protection Agency agree on this. It is invalid for communities living near masts.

Increase of breast cancer near antennas

The head of cancer registry in Berlin, Roland Stabenow informed the residents of Steinbach-Hallenberg in a recent conference, that there is an increase of 7 fold in breast cancer in their area (an area with cellular antennas). He emphasized that this is not a proof that the increase is linked to the antennas. He also talked about the causes of breast cancer. The attention to the place was drawn after a map was prepared by the residents and the cases are near the antennas.

--------

Dear Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks,

I wish to inform you that I fully agree with Iris Atzmon. This subject needs thorough, INDEPENDENT research in order to find the damage to our well-being that non-thermal EMF is causing.

I lived near a cellphone tower for one year and it has completely damaged my nervous system. I also know of many innocent people that have had to move, quit their jobs , and cannot find remedy for their sensitivity to EMF. One lady that I knew could not stand to live in the bombardment of EMF in our atmosphere, she was found dead leaving behind a suicide note.

I ask you IS THIS THE WAY TO TREAT INNOCENT PEOPLE?

Two others I know, one a teacher and another, an office worker, have had to leave their jobs and try to find refuge from EMF. I had to leave a lovely home and am now living in a cabin in the woods, away from cellphone towers. I have received many calls for help over the passed ten years of research, from people that are desperate to find comfort and remedy.

I have read many scientific studies as well as surveys that were taken around cellphone towers and a lot show that there is danger to our health from the emissions. In fact I find more studies showing illness from EMF than from second hand smoke, yet many cities in Canada are banning smoking in public places due to possible effects to others. Why is EMF not being more closely looked at???? I find it is doing more harm than second hand smoke.

If you are interested in the preservation of human health I advise that the world standards be set at a density that dose not harm human health, even if it means shutting the wireless system down.!!!

Vodafone risks massive fine in Greek scandal

http://observer.guardian.co.uk/business/story/0,,1874087,00.html

This report in the Telegraph today (17th September 2006) reveals what many people suspect - that mobile phone operators have no scruples or morals when it comes to their profit margins and they don't care how they make their money, or at whose expense it is.

If it is true, this scandal highlights how low standards must have fallen in the World when big businesses will abuse their customers by infringing their right to privacy and also to receiving the emails that were intended for them, for no just cause. Perhaps it could be understood if we were talking about terrorist threats here, but then the Greek authorities would surely have been made aware and this scandal would not be happening.

The article states that Vodaphone "had contracted a committee of five university professors to draw up a report which will counter the allegations and indicated that it will take its case to the highest court in the land"

In other words, will Vodaphone use its excessive profits; creamed off of the customers it is abusing, to buy the means to quash this charge?

Now where have I heard something very similar before? Surely it can't be about the "science" involved as to whether phone masts are safe or not, can it?

NURSE PETITIONS THE U.S. SUPREME COURT TO BLOCK ADVANCED WIRELESS SERVICES

NURSE PETITIONS THE U.S. SUPREME COURT TO BLOCK ADVANCED WIRELESS SERVICES

HEALTHY SCHOOLS NETWORK FILES AMICUS BRIEF IN SUPPORT

Washington, DC - - September 14, 2006 -- Maria Gonzalez, a critical-care nurse and mother of two daughters who attend public school in Astoria, Queens, NY has petitioned the United States Supreme Court to block licenses from commencing operations at frequencies designated for Advanced Wireless Services (AWS) in the August 2006 FCC auction.

In her Supreme Court Docket # 06-175 Petition for Writ of Mandamus, Mrs. Gonzalez asks the Court to require that the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit direct the FCC to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) pursuant to the National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA) addressing human health risks before authorizing licenses to commence operations.

In a comment filed with the FCC, Mrs. Gonzalez said, “Serious studies need to be undertaken to determine the effects of these towers on human health. These studies will take time and it is totally unacceptable for anyone to think that we will allow our children to be guinea pigs in the interim. Obviously if 5 or 10 years from now it is determined that there is a safety issue it will be too late for children who have been exposed for all that time.”

NEPA requires all federal agencies to prepare a detailed statement delineating the impacts of major federal actions significantly affecting the quality of the human environment. The FCC’s August, 2006 AWS spectrum auction offered 1,122 licenses for market areas nationwide for an estimated dollar amount in excess of $13 billion.

At the heart of the case are the FCC’s existing RF safety standards based on the thermal impact of RF radiation – the level at which the electrical energy is high enough to heat human flesh.

Mrs. Gonzalez, along with The EMR Policy Institute, The American Skin Association, and others oppose the FCC’s current RF standards as short-sighted and inaccurate and have urged the FCC to initiate thorough and comprehensive research and study of the impacts of AWS transmissions on human health using a biological approach.

An Amicus Curiae brief has been filed by Healthy Schools Network in support of Mrs. Gonzalez’s Petition. A national organization dedicated to assuring every child and school employee an environmentally safe and healthy school, HSN promotes children’s environmental – “occupational” – health in their “ workplaces” – schools. HSN’s web site is: www.healthyschools.org

In its Amicus Brief HSN says the organization is concerned that, “a significant threat to the health of school children and personnel is posed by RF radiation from cell towers placed on or near schools or day care centers.”

If the FCC does not conduct an EIS evaluating the risks of the new RF radiation it is about to unleash, it can reasonably be expected that no other agency or local school administrator or parent will step in to produce or to finance an EIS that would generate protection. Hence the significance of a Court-mandated EIS in this case.

The Supreme Court is expected to act on the Petition after it returns in October from its summer recess. The full text of the Petition for Writ of Mandamus and the HSN Amicus Curiae brief for can be found at:

WHO survey for children using mobile phones

It appears the WHO survey came from the SC4 committee of the IEEE, please read important e-mail from Lloyd Morgan. No point wasting time filling in a survey for an industry controlled group, it’s a total waste of time.

Dear Eileen,

The continuous promotion of cellphones use by children goes unabated ( see http://radiology.um.edu.my/emfsurvey ). The SC4 committee of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) is now asking that children between the ages of 6 and 17 answer some 20 questions clearly intended as a marketing survey so industry can learn how to sell cellphones to children ever more effectively. The SC4 committee of the IEEE is totally controlled by industry while purporting to be a broad based committee open to anyone. They have just completed a new "safety guideline" for cellphone EMF exposure that doubles the amount of energy to a person's brain from the previous industry created safety (sic) guideline."

Best regards,

Lloyd

How can I find out where the nearest mobile phone base station is?

Charles Arthur
Thursday September 21, 2006
The Guardian

http://technology.guardian.co.uk/weekly/story/0,,1876700,00.html

Presently, by looking at Ofcom's Sitefinder site. But in the near future it'll probably be arriving at a Google Maps-style mashup near you. That could be interesting for a number of reasons.

First, the Sitefinder site is painfully slow and imprecise; it feels as though you're being discouraged from finding anything out. Secondly, even though this data is not government-generated (the masts' operators provide it to Ofcom), it might provide an interesting example of the hypothesis behind the Free Our Data campaign, which suggests that making non-personal data available will encourage commercial spinoffs that exploit it.

The release of the data was ordered by the Information Commissioner, responding last week to a request from a consumer group under the Environmental Information Regulations. It wanted the locations of mobile communications masts run by the five mobile networks, the Airwave emergency system and Network Rail (for trackside communication with train drivers). Ofcom has protested that releasing the data to the public - which would surely lead to sites showing mast locations in great detail, with the names of operators - would discourage operators from providing it at all. Apparently, operators fear rivals will pinpoint holes in their network and exploit that weakness to boost sales there; and that vandalism could follow release of mast locations.

Neither argument holds much weight. The problem with holes in coverage cuts both ways, while mobile masts are easy targets for determined vandals - after all, it's not as if they can run very fast. And releasing the data could help prove that masts don't have harmful effects.

The Information Commissioner pointed out that the location data still retain copyright and database rights. Now, that might preclude the first recipient from putting it online, since it would be obvious who had done it, and they might be prosecuted (depending on the terms of the release). But if a second organisation requested and received the data, and then a third, a samizdat copy of the data might well escape onto the web - with no indication of which recipient had naughtily released it.

Who would that help? An enterprising satellite navigation company could, for example, program it in so you would know where you might fall out of phone range (a potential boon to hillwalkers). The phone networks with better coverage should become obvious - which could prompt the less good ones to improve, or cut their prices.

Compared to the present obscured arrangement, it's hard to see how the proposed one would be worse. However, Ofcom has until October 9 to appeal over the ruling. Even so, we think that the ultimate test of whether the proposed move is good or bad is to ask: if the full data had always been available on a slick mashup, would it feel like an improvement or a retrograde step to stuff it back into Sitefinder?

Fury over mast bid next to playgroup

GILLIAN SLOAN and Jon Wright, front, are leading the fight against the plan for the phone mast at the bowling club

THE club is next to a children's play group

ANGRY families have mounted a campaign against a plan to erect a 50ft mobile phone mast next to a playgroup HQ.

Telecommunications company T-Mobile has sent letters to homes in Bellshill, Lanarkshire, outlining its plan to disguise the mast as a flagpole on Meadow Rise estate.

It is at Bellshill and Mossend Bowling Club, which is next to the venue used by North Road Playgroup.

However, families have started a petition outlining concerns and objections to the proposal.

T-Mobile has still to submit a formal planning application to North Lanarkshire Council, but Jon Wright and Gillian Sloan, who stay near the proposed site, have rallied support from concerned neighbours.

Mr Wright, 37, a vehicle technician, said: "As a residential area, with a large population of families and young children, this is no place for a piece of potentially harmful industrial equipment.

"We don't know if Bellshill and Mossend Bowling Club officials have agreed to this plan, but with a playgroup adjacent to the proposed site and no one sure of the long term health risks, we will fight the proposal all the way.

"Apart from the health concerns, we are also worried about the visual impact of such an unsightly structure in the community and subsequent detriment to property prices.

"T-Mobile says the mast will look like a flagpole, but it is going to tower above everything else around it."

No one from the bowling club was available for comment, but a spokeswoman for T-Mobile defended the proposal and said the area would benefit from the mast.

She said: "The use of mobile phones in the UK has grown at a phenomenal rate, with some 60million now in use.

"All communities have the potential to benefit from first class mobile communications, whether they are used for business, social or emergency purposes, but without a network of base stations mobiles do not work.

"We understand there can sometimes be concerns about locating base stations in communities, but T-Mobile's stations are operating within strict national and international guidelines recognised by the World Health Organisation.
