'Arrest Without Evidence' Planned By Government

The Government is planning a change in the law to allow police to arrest suspects without evidence, it was claimed today. The Law Society said it believed the new powers would be included in the Bill which will create the new British FBI. It warned that the cumulative effect of the Government's clampdown on crime and terrorism would be a step towards a police state. Janet Paraskeva, the Law Society's chief executive, said: "The Government is in serious danger of overstating the threat to public order and national security and bringing in draconian new laws, which will take away centuries of hard won rights. "If the Bill to establish the Serious Organised Crime Agency (Soca) includes the power to arrest someone without evidence, then solicitors could not support it.

U.S. Double Standard Prompts UN Tactical Twists

The United States, which traditionally castigates human rights violators before the United Nations each year, has rarely or ever been formally condemned by the world body for its own transgressions of civil liberties.

US Faces Criticism In British Gov’t Human Rights Report

For the US this sort of report is “embarrassing”, The United States faced rare criticism over human rights from close ally Britain on Wednesday, with an official British government report taking Washington to task over concerns about Iraq and the Guantanamo Bay jail.

To the Queen of Thailand, Please Return the Land of Hooh Yoh Akha

I have made a video presentation in which I ask the Queen of Thailand to return the land to the villages of Hooh Yoh Akha.

This video can be seen on Youtube.com here, please take a look: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AE_vybndFTI

Or on the Akha Daily Video page here: http://www.akha.org/upload/video/queenreturntheland.mov

I encourage you to look at all of our other videos in that main index here: http://www.akha.org/content/akhadailyvideos/index.html

I continue to work on a number of projects. First, as above, the campaign to get back the land of Hooh Yoh Akha continues. Also the campaign to expose UNESCO Bangkok and their alliance with the missionaries who are NOT interested to protect culture, in their racist agenda, that campaign goes on. UNESCO calls these missionaries partners. In order to be a partner with UNESCO you have to go through an extensive accreditation process with their office of the Secretariat, External Relations Cooperation ERC. http://portal.unesco.org/en/ev.php-URL_ID=28621&URL_DO=DO_TOPIC&URL_SECTION=201.html

It is no small matter. Yet UNESCO Bangkok sees the missions as more adequate in building network with the Akha to destroy their culture, than to work with traditional Akha to protect their culture. New Life Foundation was set up by Paul Lewis of Akha sterilization fame, and is a partner organization with UNESCO. UNESCO is also working with the Wycliffe Bible Translators on the Akha language, as though they might be interested in saving content, rather than rewriting it. An organization with a more deceptive agenda can not be found. SIL. Churches which support SIL think that they are protecting language and teaching people about God, when in fact they are destroying language and teaching people about imperialism. We have yet to gain an answer from UNESCO.

I continue to work on the case of the Akha in Sacramento.

I am also working on a number of publications. A very nice Akha pamphlet will be back from the printer on Thursday.

I also continue to work on the Akha Journal 3.

I am also producing an Akha Newsletter to send to people on this list who would like a copy, will be a while, I will let you know.

I am also working on a book with my wife about her life. And another book about the life of Ms. Wongsa in the Singapore prison.

On the home page of http://www.akha.org there is a comment on the initial report summary of Batik International, regarding ACF in northern Laos. This case goes on.

It is nearly the end of 2006.

Please consider to make a donation to this project, we need your financial help to continue our work. Also, I would like to point out that you no longer need to sign in with Paypal in order to use your credit card.

Some of the things we need can be seen here: http://www.akha.org/content/donations/whatweneed.html

We also need volunteers who can donate time and energy to help publicize the situation of the Akha people.

Sincerely, Matthew McDaniel

U.S. Action Bars Right of Some Captured in Iraq

A new legal opinion by the Bush administration has concluded for the first time that some non-Iraqi prisoners captured by American forces in Iraq are not entitled to the protections of the Geneva Conventions, administration officials said Monday.
