Bush may lose, but his war will go on and on

by John Ross

CounterPunch

07/21/04

The war hangs like Coleridge's albatross around the President's neck, weighting him down, hunching him over. 'We did the right thing,' he repeats at every campaign stop but he keeps having this sinking feeling. ... Now the parents of dead G.I.s are beginning to attend his rallies to ask what it was their kids died for? John Kerry concurs wholeheartedly that 'we did the right thing' in Iraq -- both he and his running mate voted to allow Bush to invade that evil empire. ... John Kerry has no intention of tamping down the bloodshed in Iraq. What he wants instead is a better, cleaner, wider (a real multilateral coalition) war, a 'victory' to be followed by 'peace with honor.' Oops, sorry! Another Vietnam flashback...

Who's paying for the war?

by William F. Buckley, Jr.

National Review

07/20/04

[H]ow are we feeling the pinch of the direct expenses of the war? We coast along as if we can take care of that kind of thing simply by borrowing. In the last two years, our deficit spending has been in the neighborhood of $800 billion. If you are sitting at the national poker game you can get away with a fugitive smile by counting in current inflation. At three percent, we can figure that the $7 trillion national debt gives us back $210 billion, inflated away (whsk!). But reasoning along those lines wouldn't make much political headway in an election year. We need some straight talk, and straight talk speaks of impositions on U.S. citizens, foremost of which is --
taxation...

Never apologize, never explain

Neo-conservatives: Never apologize, never explain

by Kevin Horrigan

Fort Wayne News-Sentinel

07/20/04

It's a bad time to be a neocon. All of their assumptions were wrong. Postwar Iraq turned out to be a dog's breakfast. The high-tech, high-speed military is so desperate for troops it's planning to offer bonuses of up to $10,000 to sailors and airmen who would otherwise muster out of the Navy and Air Force. The weapons of mass destruction haven't been found and democracy isn't flowering. But still, Bill Kristol is standing tall...

Traumatic brain injury, a 'silent handicap,' affects many Iraq vets
