The true face of Iraqi resistance

by Sami Ramadani

Guardian [UK]

09/30/04

There are now two Iraq wars: the first is being fought with helicopter gunships and cluster bombs along the banks of the Tigris and Euphrates; the second is being fought here in Britain and in the pre-election US. This is a propaganda war in which the hundreds of Iraqis killed every week by US bombardment fail to make the headlines, while the horrifying images provided by a Jordanian kidnapper and killer of British and US contractors is portrayed as the true face of Iraqi resistance. Thus the real human suffering, and the reality of the widespread resistance to occupation, is hidden from view, while bombing what US generals call Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's 'supporters' hideouts' is portrayed as a necessity. And so Falluja, a besieged city of 300,000 people, is under daily aerial attack, and parts of Sadr City, the poorest neighbourhood of Baghdad, are being reduced to rubble. Many towns and villages across Iraq are encircled, and thousands of people arrested to crush popular resistance to occupation...

What a Top Reporter in Baghdad Really Thinks About the War :

Readers of any nailbiting story from Iraq in a major mainstream newspaper must often wonder what the dispassionate reporter really thinks about the chaotic situation there, and what he or she might be saying in private letters or in conversations with friends back home.

Iraq War Takes Toll on GIs' Mental Health

The article below claims more than 10,000 Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom veterans sought mental health services from the Department of Veterans Affairs "Vet Centers." With most war veterans still in the military, these numbers are expected to rise sharply as they return home. Our Nation must welcome the warriors home and provide them with the readjustment assistance they earned. Resource information is listed below for any war veteran who may need readjustment or mental health assistance.

Back Door Draft

U.S. Rep. DeGette Urges Army Probe at Fort Carson

Young people are warned: The military draft isn't a myth, this is a reality. A "back door draft" is already here as soldiers are given a terrible choice: re-enlist or go back to the front lines. "We were offered about $10,000 (as a bonus) to re-enlist, but a lot of us said no, we didn't want to," said Wes Swanson, a specialist who was wounded during his first tour in Iraq [who recently returned to Fort Carson, Colorado]. "So they said if you don't re-enlist, we're going to PCS (transfer) you to another unit that's going to Iraq, and you're going to end up going to Iraq for another year whether you re-enlist or not."

While America slept

by Col. David Hackworth (USA, Ret.)

WorldNetDaily

We went to war because we were told Iraq had WMD that threatened our country's security and that Saddam was a key player behind 9-11. Both have been proven to be super whoppers. We were also told that liberating Iraq would be a cakewalk with few U.S. casualties and would cost no more than a billion bucks ? which would quickly be repaid by Iraqi oil. Yet more duplicity. So far I count 1,050 American dead, 7,750 combat wounded and about 30,000 non-battle casualties. And our war costs are already close to a cool $200 billion...

Truths Worth Telling

http://tinyurl.com/4ywmh

--------

America can learn from our mistakes in the past so we don't repeat them. According to the poignant and persuasive argument laid out by Daniel Ellsberg, "Surely there are officials in the present administration who recognize that the United States has been misled into a war in Iraq, but who have so far kept their silence - as I long did about the war in Vietnam. To them I have a personal message: don't repeat my mistakes. Don't wait until more troops are sent, and thousands more have died, before telling truths that could end a war and save lives. Do what I wish I had done in 1964: go to the press, to Congress, and document your claims."
