EU-Kommission ist der weltweit größte öffentliche Investor in Nanotechnologie

Mit 1,4 Milliarden Euro, die für 550 "Projekte" im Bereich der Nanowissenschaften und –technologien bereitgestellt wurden, bringt das sechste Forschungsrahmenprogramm der EU offenbar ein Drittel der für Nanotechnologie in Europa insgesamt verfügbaren öffentlichen Gelder auf. Nach Angaben der EU-Kommission ist die Europäische Union somit auf diesem "hochinteressanten Gebiet" der weltweit größte einzelne Geldgeber. Europa habe auf auf diesem Gebiet "anerkanntermaßen die Führungsrolle übernommen", teilte die EU-Behörde am 13. September mit. Bedeutsam sei die "strategische Bedeutung" dieses Wissenschaftsbereichs und dessen "potenziellen Beitrag" in den Bereichen Werkstofftechnik, Medizin und Elektronik. Die Europäer könnten insofern auf mehr "Lebensqualität und Wohlstand" hoffen.

Mobile phones: Some increased risk for long-term users

Britain's biggest-ever study into mobile phone safety has warned that a long-term cancer risk cannot be ruled out.

Scientists say possible dangers to children are also unknown - despite the millions of pounds spent during six years of research.

As a result, investigators say they cannot update "precautionary" advice issued in 2005. That warned parents to limit children's use of mobiles and said those under eight should not use them at all.
