The cell nucleus is mutating

Professor Dr. Heyo Eckel is a radiation expert. He is a radiologist, lecturer at Göttingen University, vice chairman of the Health and Environment Committee of the German Medical Association [Ausschusses Gesundheit und Umwelt der Bundesärztekammer], Chairman of the Niedersachsen province charity for "Chernobyl Children". And because he also still has family connections in Hüttlingen, we spoke with him about electromagnetic radiation.

For Radiologists there are two areas: the scientific-formal-legal and the emotional.

His scientific conclusion: Electromagnetic, pulsed waves from transmitter masts and mobile phones affect and deform the cell nucleus. Comparable with those of X-rays. As long as the harmlessness of mobile telecommunications is not proven*, everything must be done to protect the population against potential health damage.

Are electromagnetic waves dangerous for humans?

These waves deform and damage the cell nucleus. That is proven and has resulted in experiments "in vitro" (in laboratory studies)**. The cell nucleus can also mutate as a result of natural occurrences. However, one has no control over that. But changes due to the influence from electromagnetic waves are definitely documented.

And this technology is deployed across the country?

According to the present state of scientific knowledge there is no alarming health risk***. Out of the many thousand of reports, there are only 400 to 500, which comply with purely scientific protocol and thus must be taken seriously. But one must consider: The mobile telecommunications technology is still relatively new, but yet it is now deployed across the whole country. Consequential damage is hard to ascertain, not yet and maybe only after years. Like in bygone days with X-Ray radiation.

You are also involved in the Chernobyl problem.....

Yes. And the injuries that result from radioactive radiation are identical with the effects of electromagnetic radiation. The damages are so similar that they are hard to differentiate.

So you are saying, that there is a potential or suspected danger. What is your suggestion?

One must act politically. The politicians refer constantly to safe limits. There must be an agreement with the industry on a minimum distance from base stations, as in Switzerland. Above all there must be further research on how these electromagnetic waves effect humans. This radiation does not taste, it does not smell. And one does not hear it. It is not discernable through our senses. And, that’s why people are afraid of it.

What do you advise citizens who have fears about a transmitter in their vicinity?

Legally, one cannot do much. One can advise, that people unite together. In order to exert pressure - moral - pressure on the local politicians, the provincial and federal government politicians. Because they have a duty of care to avert presumed or perceived damage to citizens.

Das Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz berief eine Sondersitzung ein, als die Ergebnisse der Studie gestern vorlagen. Lösen Handys doch Krebs aus?

Forscher aus fünf skandinavischen Ländern hatten die Öffentlichkeit aufgeschreckt: Es gibt Anzeichen für Gehirntumore – auf der Kopfseite, mit der man am häufigsten telefoniert!

Gefährdet könnten alle sein, die seit mehr als zehn Jahren regelmäßig oder besonders viel telefonieren (z.B. Geschäftsleute, Außendienst-Angestellte).

40 000 Studien gibt es zu dem Thema bereits. Zunächst kam auch die neue Studie zum gleichen Ergebnis: Kein direkter Zusammenhang nachweisbar.

Dann fiel jedoch auf: Tumor-Patienten hatten verblüffend oft den Gehirnkrebs auf der Seite, an der sie ihr Handy immer ansetzten (39 Prozent mehr als normal). Warum, muss jetzt weiter untersucht werden.

Wolfram König (59), Präsident des Bundesamtes für Strahlenschutz in einer ersten Reaktion: „Wir empfehlen, die eigene Strahlenbelastung so gering wie möglich zu halten.“

Nach bisheriger Regelung sind Geräte mit einer Strahlung bis zwei Watt pro Kilo Körpergewicht unbedenklich (siehe Tabelle mit Erklärung).

Doch unter diesen Grenzwert fallen derzeit ALLE Handys im Handel.

Das Bundesamt fordert deshalb eine deutliche Kennzeichnung für alle Geräte, die besonders wenig strahlen („Blauer Engel“).

Präsident König: „Leider hat die Industrie bisher noch nicht von dieser Kennzeichnung Gebrauch gemacht.“

Rat des Bundesamtes: nur Handys mit einer Strahlung bis 0,6 Watt/ kg benutzen. Zwei Drittel aller Handys auf dem Markt fallen aber nicht darunter ...

Cancer scientist fights plan for new mast (Tetra) on his doorstep.

A LEADING cancer expert is so alarmed about the potential health hazards of a new generation of mobile phone masts that he is battling to prevent one being put up outside his home.

Professor Sir David Lane of the Cancer Research charity, who is tipped to win a Nobel prize for his work on cancer genes, has written to his local council saying that not enough research has been done into the dangers of the new Terrestrial Trunked Radio (Tetra) system.

And he added: 'This type of transmitter may constitute a health hazard to the occupants of neighbouring houses.'

The professor's comments will embarrass the Government which insists the system is safe and has given the go-ahead for communications company O2 to roll out nearly 3,500 of its Airwave transmitters using Tetra technology.

His intervention will also boost protesters who claim that Tetra is linked to skin rashes, epilepsy, leukemia, bone and breast cancer.

Sir David, professor of molecular oncology at Dundee University, became alarmed after telecoms company NTL applied for planning permission to erect the Tetra aerial on an existing base station near his home in Balmullo, Fife. Tetra will provide a nationwide digital radio system for emergency services.

Sir David makes his health objections in a letter to Fife Council. He also claims the aerial will spoil an area of natural beauty and reduce the value of local properties. The letter is co-signed by his wife Birgitte, herself a medical professor.

Campaigners believe that Tetra's pulsed microwave radiation signals at a frequency of 17.6Hz, a level similar to brain waves, cause calcium to leak from the brain, damaging the nervous system.

The independent Stewart Report into mobile technology recommended that pulsing at around 16Hz should be avoided.

Sir David appeared to backtrack after his views were publicised in a local newspaper. In a letter to its editor he stressed: 'The excellent Stewart Report makes it clear that the current body of scientific evidence does not indicate any significant risk.' He refused to comment further.

Lisa Oldham, director of pressure group Mast Sanity, said: 'People try to make opponents sound like hysterical house-wives but we're not and we need more professionals like Sir David to get involved.'

NTL denied that Tetra posed a threat, adding: 'The total radio-frequency emissions for our sites are well within international guidelines.'

The Home Office said: 'We take safety seriously and would not endanger health by introducing dangerous equipment.'

Also doch: Handystrahlen fördern Gehirntumor

Handystrahlen sind völlig harmlos. Werbeblätter und Broschüren, die so etwas behaupten, müssten nach Forderung bayerischer Umweltpolitiker jetzt „sofort eingestampft“ werden. Denn die Süddeutsche Zeitung http://www.sueddeutsche.de/,Ple1Lar/gesundheit/artikel/58/99958/ bringt heute eine erschreckende Nachricht: Forschungsinstitute aus Großbritannien, Finnland, Dänemark, Schweden und Norwegen haben festgestellt, dass sich nach 10-jährigem intensiven Handy-Gebrauch das Risiko, an einem Gehirntumor zu erkranken, fast vervierfacht!

„Die Zeit der Verharmlosung ist vorbei. Alle bisher seitens der Bayerischen Staatsregierung zum Thema Mobilfunk herausgegebenen Broschüren müssen in den Reißwolf!“, fordert der ödp-Landesvorsitzende Bernhard Suttner.

Seine Partei ist die Lobby der Mobilfunkbetreiber längst ein Dorn im Auge. Wenn es um Proteste gegen Sendemasten in der Nähe von Schulen oder Kindergärten geht, steht die ödp vorne mit dabei.

Der Passauer ödp-Politiker Urban Mangold, der sich selbst zum Handy-Verzicht bekennt, sieht auch die Sendeanlagen neu im Brennpunkt der Kritik: „Womöglich muss auch hier in Kürze zugegeben werden, dass die bisher behauptete Harmlosigkeit lediglich Wunschdenken war. Die drastische Senkung der Grenzwerte muss endlich auf die Tagesordnung“. Für die Aufstellung von Sendemasten sollten öffentliche Genehmigungsverfahren mit Nachbarschaftsbeteiligung vorgeschrieben werden.

In Passau wurde jüngst ein umstrittener Mobilfunksendemast verborgen in den Rathausturm montiert. Die Strahlung trifft vor allem städtische Bedienstete und Beamte, die ringsum in den Büros arbeiten.
