As you know, I have appealed to you for help in regard to funding Assoc. Prof. Olle Johansson in the past. Eileen O'Connor has done a great job of explaining the need to continue funding Dr. Johansson and her email is included (addressed to the Karolinska).

While you have excellent EMF scientists in the Uk, including Dr. Denis Henshaw (now also a Trustee), there are many benefits in collaborating with the prestigous Karolinska Institute by joining efforts to support the work of such a brilliant, honest, passionate worker for the rights of persons everywhere to live in harmony with their environment. As you know, there are many aspects of the EMF/EMR issue that need urgent attention -- not the least of which is the need to begin making announcements re "common sense prudent avoidance!!!

Dr. Johansson has bravely withstood criticism from many fronts and has had his very livelihood threatened many times. He is "a voice for the people" -- we can't afford for him to be silenced!!!

I have appealed to you for help before and have pointed out how and why I believe support of Assoc. Prof. Olle Johansson by your Charity will "lead the way" toward preventing Leukaemia in children -- actually, an effort that will provide a wonderful opportunity for your Charity to not only raise awareness re cost-free EMF mitigation but also has the potential of being a "major fundraiser" for Children With Leukaemia!!!

ACNEM letter in support of Olle Johansson’s continuing research

Last week I heard that Olle Johansson at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm has been denied any further funding to continue with his EMF research. Unfortunately this is all too frequently happening to independent researchers who dare report on finding non-thermal bio-effects. The cell phone industry is trying to convince governments and organisations with the bull-shit line that there is no need to do this type of research anymore as non-thermal effects do not exist and funding is better spent elsewhere.

Olle has written several papers in the Journal of the Australasian College of Nutritional & Environmental Medicine (ACNEM) and you can access thes papers on http://www.acnem.org

There is now an urgent need for people and organisations to write to the Karolinska Institute (details below) in support of reinstating further funding in order for Johansson to continue his important research.

Below is the content of a letter sent to Professor Harriet Wallberg-Henriksson, air-mailed today by Daan Spijer, CEO of ACNEM. I urge others to do similar.

It is with sadness that I learned recently that funding for research by Dr. Ölle Johansson into EMFs has been stopped. I understand that this is due to a lack of funds.

Dr Johansson has written a number of seminal articles for this College‚s Journal (see http://www.acnem.org/journal ). These articles have had an impact in Australia on both government and public approaches to the proliferation of EMFs and the seemingly inexorable increase in the breadth and depth of the electromagnetic soup we live in.

Sweden is regarded in Australia as being in the forefront of research into and regulation of environmental pollution. It would set knowledge and understanding in this area back, if eminent researchers such as Dr Johansson were not able to continue their important work.

I ask that all possible efforts be made to find the funding necessary for Dr Johansson to continue his work.

The head of cancer registry in Berlin, Roland Stabenow informed the residents of Steinbach-Hallenberg in a recent conference, that there is an increase of 7 fold in breast cancer in their area (an area with cellular antennas). He emphasized that this is not a proof that the increase is linked to the antennas. He also talked about the causes of breast cancer. The attention to the place was drawn after a map was prepared by the residents and the cases are near the antennas.

I wish to inform you that I fully agree with Iris Atzmon. This subject needs thorough, INDEPENDENT research in order to find the damage to our well-being that non-thermal EMF is causing.

I lived near a cellphone tower for one year and it has completely damaged my nervous system. I also know of many innocent people that have had to move, quit their jobs , and cannot find remedy for their sensitivity to EMF. One lady that I knew could not stand to live in the bombardment of EMF in our atmosphere, she was found dead leaving behind a suicide note.

I ask you IS THIS THE WAY TO TREAT INNOCENT PEOPLE?

Two others I know, one a teacher and another, an office worker, have had to leave their jobs and try to find refuge from EMF. I had to leave a lovely home and am now living in a cabin in the woods, away from cellphone towers. I have received many calls for help over the passed ten years of research, from people that are desperate to find comfort and remedy.

I have read many scientific studies as well as surveys that were taken around cellphone towers and a lot show that there is danger to our health from the emissions. In fact I find more studies showing illness from EMF than from second hand smoke, yet many cities in Canada are banning smoking in public places due to possible effects to others. Why is EMF not being more closely looked at???? I find it is doing more harm than second hand smoke.

If you are interested in the preservation of human health I advise that the world standards be set at a density that dose not harm human health, even if it means shutting the wireless system down.!!!

BIOLOGICAL EFFECTS FROM INCREASED BROADCAST RADIATION EXPOSURE CONFIRMED FOR LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN RESIDENTS

Summary of National Institute of Health (NIH)/Colorado State University (CSU) Study of Lookout Mountain Residents

Lookout Mountain Residents with increased amounts of broadcast radiation (RF) have statistically significant elevations of certain types of white blood cells that are immune system markers.

The National Institute of Environmental Health commissioned Colorado State University to examine the effects of long-term exposure to radiation on hundreds of residents of Lookout Mountain. This study follows the Colorado Department of Public Health and the Environment’s July 2004 findings that statistically significant elevated numbers of brain tumors exist in residents near the broadcast antennae towers atop Lookout Mountain.

Professor Jim Burch, M.S., Ph.D., one of the authors of the CSU study observes:

“This study does show biological changes in the Lookout Mountain residents’ immune system markers that are associated with RF. Various immune markers increase with increasing RF exposure. For example, the T cells and lymphocytes go up in a statistically significant manner with increases in RF. The reason for this reaction within the human body for this biological response in unclear. People with certain types of leukemia have high immune markers. The fact that there are RF limits imposed by the federal government shows that broadcast radiation is harmful beyond certain amounts. Everyone knows too much is hazardous. The issue is whether there are effects below the broadcast radiation levels that heat the body. In other words, are there also nonthermal effects? The CSU study was never designed to determine the risk of RF (radiofrequency radiation); it was designed to see if the RF caused changes in the biomarkers. No one study can prove or disprove the safety of broadcast radiation. This study shows there are some biological effects. ”

Currently, there are no FCC Standards designed for long-term radiation exposure. The present FCC radiation limits are designed to protect only against short-term adverse health effects caused by heating of the body, from sources such as microwaves. Federal health and safety agencies have not yet developed policies concerning possible risk from long-term, nonthermal exposures, such as experienced in the neighborhoods within five miles of the broadcast antennae towers This is the first official study to measure radiation amounts on Golden’s Lookout Mountain, Colorado State University’s Department of Environmental Health confirms that residents closest to the broadcast antennae towers experience high radiation levels: one in four Lookout Mountain residents experience radiation levels far in excess of the levels that the median population experiences. More specifically, those residents living in the same elevation levels as the towers have the highest radiation levels. As part of the CSU study, hundreds of residents were selected randomly and agreed to have their bodily functions measured and monitored for three consecutive days. This included wearing a ‘watch’ and fanny-pack devices that measured sleep patterns, cardiovascular and other vital signs. Participants gave blood samples and collected all urine output during that time period.

“Radio Frequency Non-Ionizing Radiation in a Community Exposed to Radio and Television Broadcasting”, addresses the amount of radiation in the area. That paper is published in the Environmental Health Perspectives, a National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences journal. The biological findings report has not yet been published but was obtained by a company pursuant to a Freedom of Information Act request to the National Institute of Health and referred to by a representative of the Lake Cedar Group Broadcasters at a public meeting last Thursday.

Human Responses to Residential RF Exposure

Just received notice of the publication of an important new study by Dr. Jim Burch, formerly with Colorado Sate University, on Lookout Mountain in Golden, Colorado showing significant elevations of certain types of while blood cells that are immune system markers associated with exposure to radiofrequency radiation from TV broadcast towers located close to several thousand residences there.

There is no article by Burch a.o. in 9/17-9/23 (2006) of EHP. The only by Burch a.o. I find in EHP: http://www.ehponline.org/members/2005/8237/8237.html and it is an investigation about RF levels, not about health markers.

The radiation goes up to levels between 5,000 and 2,000,000 mikroWatt/m2. In the EMF-Handbuch of the Ecolog Institute (2006) you find the attached tables. They are based on a thorough scientific overview.

Indications of increased cell proliferation from 1,000 mikroWatt/m2, weak indications of EHS from 2,000 mikroWatt/m2, consistent indications of nervous system impairment from 10,000 mikroWatt/m2, consistent indications of cell stress reactions from 50,000 mikroWatt/m2, etcetera.

Most parents who spoke at the Cave Creek Unified School District board meeting on Tuesday asked the district to spend $1.4 million to move two high-voltage power lines away from Sonoran Trails Middle School.

The lines cross the parking lot at Sonoran Trails Middle School, which moved to a new campus at 5555 E. Pinnacle Vista Drive in Phoenix this year.

One transmission line, a 69,000-volt line run by Arizona Public Service, is 21 feet from the nearest building.

The other, a 230,000-volt line run by the federal Western Area Power Administration, is 87 feet away.

The district is looking into moving the lines to address health concerns.

Some studies have indicated a link between high electromagnetic field levels, or EMF, emitted by the lines and leukemia, but actual health risks are disputed.

Scottsdale resident Al Pazone said growing up in a house in a Chicago suburb less than 100 yards from high-voltage power lines proved to him that EMF is hazardous.

He said he had three tumors removed in the 18 years he lived there, and his mother died in August from Lou Gehrig’s disease, associated with EMF.

Pazone said his family — two children who attend Sonoran Trails and a wife who works there — probably wouldn’t continue at the school if the lines weren’t moved.

But Barbara Maroney said giving students a choice to attend Desert Arroyo, where her two children are enrolled, might be more cost effective.

Recent studies by Environmental Testing and Technology measured the strength of the EMF at the school, recording levels of 5.8 mili-Gauss.

That’s little more than half of the 10.9 mG average originally projected, although the company recommended a long-term study to be sure.

In comparison, microwave ranges generate 10 mG at two feet, says Western Area Power Administration.

The board can spend $1.4 million to move the lines 175 feet or more, or $1.3 million for 100 feet.

The board asked for more information, including a second opinion and possibly a long-term study.

Sind die von Bürgermeister Drexelius ausdrücklich erwähnten „ehrenamtlichen Politiker“ sowie die ausführenden Kommunalbehörden den Praktiken der professionell agierenden Mobilfunkbetreiber gewachsen? Wie es sich durch das im Bericht der TZ beschriebene hilflose Herumgeeiere aller beteiligten Fraktionen darstellt, offensichtlich nicht. Zum Sachverhalt ist jedenfalls nicht zu verleugnen, daß in unmittelbarer Nähe von Mobilfunkmasten Immobilienpreise bis zur Unverkäuflichkeit hin fallen können.- Dies sagen z.B. auch Untersuchungen des Rings Deutscher Makler aus. Ebenso gibt es konsistente Aussagen zur Gesundheitsgefährdung, was natürlich von der Mobilfunkbetreiberseite mit Vehemenz und durch „Gutachten“ gekaufter „Experten“ bestritten wird. Diese beiden Tatsachen sollten ausreichen, mit dem Thema sensibler umzugehen, als offensichtlich in Usingen geschehen. Die „Politiker“ sollten sich dabei nicht wundern und schon gar nicht über den „Knigge“ die Betroffenen belehren wollen, wenn aufgeklärte Bürger, die sich übergangen fühlen, sich zur Wehr setzen. Die Möglichkeit zur Verschaffung des notwendigen Gehörs hatten dabei bestimmt auch Einfluß auf die Wahl der Mittel. Anstatt sich über Mißgriffe einzelner zu echauffieren, sollten sich die politisch Verantwortlichen um das Wohlergehen ihrer, ihnen anvertrauten Mitbürger kümmern. Dazu gehört in erster Linie, daß sie sich umfassend und neutral informieren; nicht ausreichend ist hierfür z.B. das im Bericht zitierte und beschlossene Einladen eines „O2-Fachmannes“, der per se ausschließlich die Betreiberinteressen vertreten wird. Anzusprechen und anzuhören wären z.B. anerkannte, neutrale Planungsbüros, die im Rahmen kommunaler Bauleitplanung komplette realisierbare fachkompetente Mobilfunkversorgungspläne erstellen.

Kinder verlieren Sinn für Realität

Osnabrück (AP) Exzessiver Gebrauch von Computer und Handy hinterlässt im Gehirn von Kindern tiefe Spuren. Den Betroffenen drohe sogar der Verlust des Realitätssinns, warnte der Göttinger Hirnforscher Gerald Hüther in der "Neuen Osnabrücker Zeitung": "Ist dieser Prozess weit fortgeschritten, finden sich die Kinder und Jugendlichen in der realen Welt nicht mehr zurecht." Schätzungen zufolge sind allein in Deutschland mehr als 100.000 junge Menschen computersüchtig.

Die Veränderungen im Gehirn beschreibt der Neurobiologe so: Anfänglich dünne Verbindungswege würden durch intensive Nutzung immer dicker und seien am Ende gar Autobahnen: "Die sind dann so beschaffen, dass man, wenn man einmal drauf kommt, nicht wieder runterkommt", sagte Hüther. Betroffene müssten dann nur noch einen Computer sehen und hätten schon das Bedürfnis, sich davor zu setzen.

Mit jeder Stunde aber, die Kinder vor dem Computer verbrächten, fehle ihnen eine Stunde, um ihr Gehirn für die Anforderungen im wirklichen Leben weiterzuentwickeln, erklärte der Autor des gerade erscheinenden Buchs "Computersüchtig". Ähnlich wie konkrete Tätigkeiten beim Computerspiel würden auch die virtuellen Vorstellungswelten von den Kindern aufgenommen und verinnerlicht: "Das Gehirn wird so, wie man es benutzt", betonte der Professor.

Solche Spuren hinterlässt laut Hüther auch der exzessive Gebrauch von Handys und Kurzmitteilungen: So werde die Region im Hirn von Jugendlichen, die die Regulation der Daumenbewegungen steuere, seit zehn Jahren immer größer. "Im Klartext heißt das: Die Einführung einer neuen Kulturtechnik, in diesem Falle SMS und Handys, die Jugendliche besonders intensiv nutzen, hat dazu geführt, dass sich ihr Hirn entsprechend strukturiert", erklärte Hüther. Er forderte Konsequenzen: "Wir müssen uns deshalb fragen, ob wir die Verantwortung für die Strukturierung des Hirns unserer Kinder weiter allein den Werbestrategen der Hersteller von Handys und Computerspielen überlassen wollen."

Ähnliche Suchtstruktur wie bei Alkohol und Cannabis

Frühere Studien hatten bereits gezeigt, dass Computerspielen genau so zur Sucht werden kann und zu den gleichen Hirnreaktionen führt wie der Konsum von Alkohol oder Cannabis. Nach Erkenntnissen der Suchtforschungsgruppe der Berliner Charité kann aus Spielspaß dann eine Abhängigkeit entstehen, wenn das Gehirn auf Dauer bestimmten Belohnungsreizen ausgesetzt wird. Diese positiven Reize führten zur vermehrten Ausschüttung des Botenstoffes Dopamin im Vorderhirn und wie beim Konsum von Drogen zum ersehnten Glücksgefühl. Als Folge wiederholter Belohnungsreize entsteht nach Angaben der Wissenschaftler dann ein so genanntes Suchtgedächtnis, was bei mehr als jedem zehnten Computerspieler der Fall ist.

Öffentliche Stellungnahme des Bündnisses saarländischer Bürgerinitiativen MF. An Bürger in allen Teilen des Landes, Politiker, Medienvertreter und Fachkräfte

Auf verschiedenen Wegen erreichen uns z. Zt. folgende Vorwürfe:

1. Wir seien in Rehlingen für eine Lösung, gegen die wir uns in Rohrbach wenden.

2. Wir kritisierten ausgiebigen Handykonsum, obwohl gerade jetzt die Unbedenklichkeit des mobilen Telefonierens bestätigt worden sei. Wir nehmen zu beidem wie folgt Stellung:

1. Antennen auf Privatdächern mitten in Wohngebieten oder höhere Masten auf Sportplätzen etwas weiter entfernt?

Die Frage stellt sich u. E. gegenwärtig nicht so, weil in Rohrbach ein dritter Weg gesucht wird. Aber sie zeigt auch die Unsinnigkeit eines Systems, das Bürgern allenfalls die Wahl zwischen größeren und kleineren Übeln läßt. Wir sind nicht grundsätzlich gegen den Mobilfunk. Aber wir halten seine UMTS-Variante, die uns die Antennen bis auf 10m-Abstände an die Schlafzimmer heranrückt, in technischer Hinsicht für antiquiert, weil es längst tausendfach schnellere Techniken gibt; in gesundheitlicher Hinsicht für unverantwortlich, weil die industrieunabhängige Forschung schwerwiegende Schädigungen prophezeit ; in gesellschaftspolitischer Hinsicht für kurzsichtig, weil der allenthalben beobachtbare Einsatz an Lüge und Gewalttätigkeit den Vertrauensschwund der Bürger nicht nur gegenüber der Mobilfunkindustrie, sondern auch gegenüber der herrschenden Klasse beschleunigt.

2. Handys schädlich oder unschädlich? Oder: Wie unsere kapitalistische Marktwirtschaft funktioniert

Die mit viel Geld und Energie in die öffentlichen Medien gebrachte grundsätzliche Entwarnung für mobiles Telefonieren bezieht sich in der Regel auf die internationale 'Interphone-Studie' ("Cellular phones, cordless phones, and the risks of glioma and meningioma"), die nach einem ersten Beobachtungszeitraum von 2000-2003 noch wenig Beunruhigendes feststellen konnte. Doch die manipulative Meinungsmache unterschlägt einen ganz wesentlichen Teil der wissenschaftlichen Aussagen. Um es an der Halbierung einer Zusammenfassung des Medizinischen Instituts der Univerität Mainz zu verdeutlichen: "In conclusion, no overall increased risk of glioma or meningioma was observed among these cellular phone users; however, for long-term cellular phone users, results need to be confirmed before firm conclusions can be drawn" (PMID 16443797).

Dieser Nachsatz, der in der Aufnahme und Weiterverbreitung zumeist unterschlagen wird, trägt einem Erfordernis Rechnung, das Prof. Karl Hecht von der Berliner Charité nach einer Auswertung von rund 1500 russischer Studien zur Wirkung hochfrequenter elektromagnetischer Felder für unverzichtbar hält: der Berücksichtigung eines Langzeitfaktors, für den drei Jahre noch eine vergleichsweise lächerliche Größe sind (wie beim Rauchen). Der Forschungsbericht von Hecht hat ebenfalls ergeben (etwas schematisiert): in den ersten 5 Jahren noch kaum Wirkungen; in den nächsten fünf schon mehr; ab 10 Jahren dann eine signifikante Zunahme chronischer Erkrankungen (vgl. Karl Hecht: Strahlende Energie und die Folgen für die Gesundheit der Menschen. In: Martin Runge u.a.: Mobilfunk, Gesundheit und die Politik. Münster 2006). Das Freundlichste, was man derzeit nach dem Stand einer industrieunabhängigen Forschung sagen kann ist, daß wir über die Größenordnung der Schädigungen noch nicht urteilen können. - Grenzwerte und Meßkataster, die den Zeitfaktor nicht berücksichtigen, dienen nach Hecht nur der Verharmlosung und Verschleierung der Risiken. - Wie anders man mit den Risiken umgehen kann, zeigt ein angehängter Appell der österreichischen Ärztekammer.

Parallel zur angelaufenen Werbekampagne für die neuen 'Alleskönner', mit denen wir auch fernsehen etc. können, versucht die Mobilfunkindustrie alles aus dem Weg zu räumen, was den noch nicht recht florierenden Absatz behindern könnte: So bietet der Verband der Mobilfunkindustrie auch Schulungen für Ärzte an, die uns vom unbedenklichen Kauf der UMTS-Handys überzeugen sollen. Den Aufwand an Geld und Manipulation, die ebenso seriöse wie kritische niederländische TNO (Entsprechung zu unserem Fraunhofer-Institut) -Studie zur Problematik von UMTS zu entkräften, analysiert ein Schweizer Kritiker-Team von W. Kuhn, Ing. L. Gephart u.a. in dem angehängten weiteren Beitrag.

Seit der Annahme von 50-Milliarden EUR haben sich deutsche Regierungen zum Auftraggeber und Förderer solcher Entwicklungen gemacht, statt sie zu kontrollieren, wie es ihre Aufgabe wäre. Als Bündnis kritischer Demokraten sind wir jedem Politiker, Wissenschaftler und Arzt, vor allem aber auch jedem Journalisten in dieser Situation für Verantwortungsbewußtsein und Widerstandbereitschaft dankbar, auf die unsere Demokratie in solchen Situtionen angewiesen sind.

Soweit die Entwarnungen bereits in Umlauf gebracht wurden, bitten wir im Sinne eines fairen Pro und Contra um entsprechende Differenzierungen.
