Tell Congress to STOP the Public Land Giveaway

Congressional Bill Would Sell National Public Lands Dirt Cheap

Congress may decide as early as next week on a bill that would sell off millions of acres of public lands at bargain basement prices -- including lands in national forests, national monuments, wilderness areas, and even national parks -- to mining corporations and real estate developers.

Please contact your members of Congress immediately to ask them to oppose the sell-off of America's public lands and to remove this giveaway from the budget bill in conference.

Iraqis expected much from the fall of Saddam Hussein. They had endured 23 years of war and sanctions. The Iraqi armed forces, even supposedly elite units like the Special Republican Guard, simply packed up and went home. Nobody wanted to die for the old regime. Instead they hoped to enjoy the fruits of their oil wealth for the first time and begin to live like Kuwaitis or Saudis. Instead the US installed a colonial regime. Iraqis were marginalized and their opinions ignored. Iraqi professionals with PhDs and fluent in several languages found themselves being ordered about by young Americans whose only qualification was links to the Republican party...

Chipping away at our liberties

The Moderate Voice
by Jack Gantt

12/12/05

Welcome to Amerika, 2005. People have no rights at all. If you do not have the right to own property, you simply cannot have any other rights. Free speech? Sorry, you can be arrested for standing in the wrong place, since you cannot own land, so that right is gone. Freedom of religion? Sorry, if you are in a church the government doesn't like, they can take it from you and demolish it, because you have no right to own property. Right to bear arms? Nope. If you cannot own property, government can, quite literally, take anything away from you that you own. How about the right to be secure in your own property and 'their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures?' Nope. If you cannot own property, then this right simply does not apply. The government can just claim that your house is their house, and they can do whatever they like in their own house...

Return civil liberties stolen by Patriot Act

Star Bulletin
by staff

12/12/05

House and Senate negotiators agreed last week to make 14 of the Patriot Act's 16 provisions permanent. Those essentially expanded surveillance and investigative powers of the federal government. ... A bipartisan group of six senators has vowed to fight the bill on the Senate floor, with Sen. Russell Feingold, D-Wis., threatening to use a filibuster to block a vote. Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont, ranking Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, proposed a three-month extension to work out a better compromise. Proponents of the bill, including the White House, refer to it as a compromise, but no Democratic negotiator went along with it. Further Republican concessions are needed to gain bipartisan and public support...

Is Bush governing in a fantasy world?

Human Events
by Bruce Bartlett

12/13/05

In its latest issue, Newsweek magazine has a disturbing portrait of George W. Bush as an aloof, out-of-touch president, isolated by his own governing style. Because of his intolerance for dissent, he has effectively surrounded himself with yes-men (and women) fearful of telling the president anything he doesn't want to hear. Written by veteran reporters Evan Thomas and Richard Wolffe, the Newsweek story confirms reports we have heard for the last five years about Bush's disinterest in the policy process or even the day-to-day politicking that ordinarily goes with the job. He dislikes meeting with members of Congress, is not a big consumer of news that does not come to him through official channels and relies almost exclusively on a small cluster of close aides, ignoring his Cabinet and the rest of the federal establishment. The result is that Bush appears to live in a sort of fantasy world utterly divorced from reality...

It is startling to read an apologist for torture lobbying his special agenda in a New England newspaper. We have never experienced this climate before in New England. Perhaps the editors are from elsewhere. They seem to be. Maybe they are from Los Angeles. Perhaps they have become disassociated by not being from anywhere at all and live a life of genre and generational politics without any of the traditional moral bearings linked to regional life and provincial tradition. This is the curse of Hamiltonian federalism. The country becomes a series of special interests vying for power. No one is from anyplace. Jefferson's federalism develops the whole man and woman -- mind, body, spirit, culture, region and religion. But Hamilton is all about influence and lobbying influence with money. States lose their influence, regions lose their character and identity and so do the people in them. Torture is just another unpleasant fish stall in the marketplace of ideas...

The much-ballyhooed elections in Iraq later this week are likely to dig the Iraqi hole a little deeper for the Bush administration. The Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, the most revered Shi'ite Muslim cleric in Iraq, has indirectly ordered fellow Shi'a to cast their ballots for representatives of the Shi'ite religious parties that now control the interim Iraqi government. A permanent Shi'ite-Kurdish government may prove even more intransigent than the interim government in addressing Sunni concerns about being cut out of Iraq's oil revenues -- thus accelerating the incipient civil war in that nation...

US makes strides against "ecoterrorism"

Christian Science Monitor

12/12/05

The arrest of six animal rights activists and environmental radicals last week is the clearest sign in years that law-enforcement authorities now are able to infiltrate the shadowy world of 'ecoterrorism.' But the apprehension of four men and two women in five states around the country - all charged with firebombings and other criminal acts committed years ago in the Pacific Northwest - also indicates how hard it is to do that. While the arrests are significant, many more crimes carried out in the name of protecting animals and the environment remain unsolved. ... Groups such as the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) and the Earth Liberation Front (ELF) usually claim credit for such acts. But as far as law-enforcement officials can tell, there is little organization or structure to the groups...

Groups urge 11th hour rally against Patriot Act renewal

New Standard News

12/12/05

With Congress expected to renew several of the more controversial portions of the USA Patriot Act as early as this week, civil libertarians and privacy rights advocates are highlighting what they see as serious flaws in the new legislation. Their only hope is that public sentiment and political action will sway enough lawmakers to force changes to the law. ... Opponents of the reauthorizing the Patriot Act contend that the expanded surveillance provisions are overly broad and that many unconstitutionally abridge personal freedoms. According to the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a privacy rights advocate, Congress should let every sunsetting section die on New Year’s Eve. 'Several provisions can be used against Americans in a wide range of investigations that have nothing to do with terrorism,' the group alleged in an extensive analysis of fifteen of the provisions scheduled to expire on December 31. 'Others are too vague, jeopardizing legitimate activities protected under the First Amendment.' ... The American Civil Liberties Union largely agrees. In a statement released shortly after President Bush used his weekly radio address to urge lawmakers to quickly pass the reauthorization, ACLU Washington Director Caroline Frederickson called the joint Senate-House Conference Committee report a 'concession to the White House and a curtailment of the Constitution'...

INTERNATIONAL PEACE CONFERENCE

Saturday 10 December 2005 The Conference was a great success, a significant step forward for the worldwide anti-war movement. Sheik Hassan Al Zagani of the Al Sadr movement was refused a visa to enter the UK and faces further attacks - read the statement
http://www.stopwar.org.uk/new/news/mediarelease/alzagani.htm

Well over 1000 people packed packed into the Royal Horticultural Society Hall, London on Saturday for the peace conference. More were in an overflow hall and still more were turned away in the days before the conference began.

They came from the US; a sizeable delegation of activists from the east and west coasts and points between. From Iraq, Iran, as well as from Pakistan, India, the Philippines, Canada, Poland, Greece, Italy, Spain and many other European countries, to share experience and plan activity and organisation for the future.

Delegates and individuals came from across Britain; including national delegations from PCS, Amicus, CWU, TSSA and NATFHE. It was one of the biggest conferences of its kind and definitely the most diverse, with many different nationalities represented, young and old, students, school students, peace activists, Buddhists, Muslims, Jews and Christians.

They came to hear the Iraqi delegates - although the British government refused to allow entry to the al Sadr representative, Hassan al Zargani. We were joined by Sheikh al Khallisi from the Iraqi Foundation Congress, Hanna Ibrahim from the Women's Will Organisation, and Hassan Jumaa from the Iraqi Oil workers' Union, and to hear from US visitors, including Cindy Sheehan, Judith le Blanc from United for Peace and Justice and Phyllis Bennis.

The session on military families was a major highlight as we heard from former soldiers and relatives of the dead some of the most moving personal stories and political analysis of why they opposed the war and occupation.

Other sessions were on bringing Bush and Blair to account and building an international movement. All stressed the importance of immediate troop withdrawal, the need to guard against other forms of military or economic intervention, the connection between the war and attacks on our liberties and, of course, our opposition to torture.

The conference heard from Anas al Tikriti, who has been in Iraq trying to obtain the release of kidnapped peace activist, Norman Kember, and issued a statement calling for his release. We also issued a statement for more international coordination, an international weekend of action on March 18/19 2006 and for continued campaigning around other issues.

STATEMENT FROM THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

This international conference, embracing representatives of the Iraqi, British and American and many other peoples, drawn from all parts of society, declares that the crisis caused by the invasion and occupation of Iraq is the central problem in world politics today and demands urgent resolution. It affirms that the invasion of Iraq in 2003 was unlawful, in breach of the Charter of the United Nations and justified by the invading powers with lies designed to manipulate public opinion. It declares that the occupation of Iraq by US and British military forces has brought misery and suffering to the people of Iraq. The occupation represents the denial of their national rights, impedes social, economic and political development and threatens the wider peace in the Middle East and the world. It has accounted for the loss of tens of thousands of lives of the Iraqi peoples, as well as more than 2,000 soldiers from the occupying armies. This conference therefore demands an immediate end to the occupation of Iraq, as called for by the majority of the Iraqi, British and American peoples. It demands the withdrawal of the occupying military forces and the return of full sovereignty to the Iraqi people, who should be allowed to determine their own future free of external interference. We salute the struggle of the Iraqi people for national freedom and the worldwide movement against the war and the occupation. We pledge to step up our campaign against the occupation until it is ended. To this end, we call on the anti-war movement in all countries to:

* Organise international demonstrations on March 18-19 2006, the third anniversary of the war and invasion, calling for the immediate withdrawal of troops and an end to the occupation.

* Campaign for a full international public inquiry into the assault on Fallujah last year.

* Give full support to the campaigns of military families in the US, Britain and the other occupying countries.

* Develop an international coordination from this conference to plan further events.

* Campaign against the privatisation of Iraqi oil.

* Oppose any attack on Iran or Syria.

STATEMENT (2) FROM THE INTERNATIONAL PEACE CONFERENCE

This international Peace Conference of 1,400 anti-war activists from Britain, the USA and many other countries demands the release of all illegally detained prisoners in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay. We urge the release of the four Chritian peace campaigners, Norman Kember, Tom Fox, James Loney and Harmeet Singh Sooden, and we ask those holding them to return them to their families unharmed.

Report on Historic International Anti-War Conference

From: David Swanson

Below is a detailed summary of the International Peace Conference organized by the "Stop the War Coalition" this weekend in London. This historic event, which I participated in, that demonstrates the worldwide depth and breadth of the anti-war movement. It also endorses a major worldwide mobilization against the Iraq war and occupation on the third anniversary of the war March 18-19, 2005. There are hotlinks in the article which, if they do not appear, can be seen on the version published on DemocracyRising.US.

Please forward it to people interested in the Iraq War.

International Anti-War Movement Builds at UK Conference Major Worldwide Demonstrations Planned for Third Anniversary of Iraq War

By Kevin Zeese

Andrew Murray the Chair of the Stop the War Coalition opened a conference in London on December 10th describing it as an "historic event" that brings together peace activists from around the world. Indeed, the conference included delegates from the United States, Britain, Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, India, the Philippines, Canada, Poland, Greece, Italy, Spain and many other European countries. And as the day wore on it became evident that the potential historic nature of the conference would be seen depending on the actions taken as a result of the event.

No doubt, the international peace movement deepened, broadened and increased its solidarity at the conference. Approximately, 1,200 people packed the Royal Horticultural Society Hall in an event that remained full throughout the day until 8 PM at night.

The conference passed two resolutions: One deplored the holding of illegally detained prisoners and called for the release of four Christian Peace Workers who are currently being held hostage. The other described the Iraq War as the "central problem in world politics today and demands urgent resolution" and laid out plans for the future – including a major international demonstration on March 18-19 – the third anniversary of the invasion of Iraq.

Among the speakers that attendees came to hear were Iraqi delegates. This was made controversial when the British government refused to allow entry to the al Sadr representative, Hassan al Zargani. In a statement he said:

"The British and American governments send armies to occupy Iraq but are frightened of one person speaking at a peace conference in London. So much for the democracy which they claim to install in Iraq. They were not satisfied with banning me from Britain, but have now succeeded in expelling me and my family from Lebanon in this inhumane and vindictive way."

Among the Iraqi delegates present were Sheikh al Khallisi from the Iraqi Foundation Congress, Hanna Ibrahim from the Women's Will organization, and Hassan Jumaa from the Iraqi Oil Workers' Union. The conference heard from Anas al Tikriti by telephone, who has been in Iraq trying to obtain the release of kidnapped peace activists. Among the prominent US delegates were Cindy Sheehan of Gold Star Families for Peace, Judith le Blanc from United for Peace and Justice, Medea Benjamin from Code Pink and Phyllis Bennis of Institute for Policy Studies.

The Current Situation

Tony Benn, the President of the Stop the War Coalition, who began his service in Parliament in 1950 and retired in 2001 in order to "devote more time to politics," opened the session on the current situation in Iraq, Britain and the U.S. by making the point that the peace movement was "the most powerful political movement of my lifetime as it represents the desires of a majority of the people." He expressed concern about the "religious justification for war because it means there will be no peace since God is claimed on both sides." He described the anti-war movement as not a "protest" movement but one that "demands that troops be brought home, opposes an attack on Syria or Iran, supports the Palestinian peoples right of return, seeks removal of nuclear weapons and demands our civil liberties – the basis of democracy – be protected." He concluded with the important point that "we need to use the resources of the world for the benefit of the people of the world. We have the power to destroy ourselves but also the resources to resolve the basic problems facing the human race."

Phyllis Bennis of the Institute for Policy Studies described the current situation as "dual occupations posing in the name of democracy," referring to the occupation of Iraq and the Palestinian territories. Bennis described the tremendous shift in U.S. public opinion with only 30 percent currently supporting President Bush on Iraq, three-quarters not believing he told the truth regarding weapons of mass destruction and 60% wanting the U.S. to bring our troops home. She noted that with these figures it is evident "we don't have a democracy that is responsive to the people." She concluded saying that a "partial withdrawal is not enough – we must demand an end to the occupation, end to torture, and demand peace."

Professor Sami Ramadani of the London Metropolitan University, a political refugee from Saddam's regime, emphasized the "Big Lie" phenomena and how it applied to Iraq. He said the public now "overwhelmingly recognizes that the Iraq War was based on a 'big lie.'" He went on to point out that "the continuation of the occupation is based on another big lie – that the Iraqi people are so hopelessly divided, hate each other so much, that they are prepared to kill each other once the occupation forces leave." He pointed out that the occupation forces have tried to divide Iraqis through promoting death squads. He quoted Lt. General William Boykin describing the Phoenix Program of Vietnam which were death squads and General William Downing, the head of U.S. special operation forces who said that death squads started operating immediately after the March 2003 invasion. He warned that people need to be careful not to be fooled by bits of news every day about Iraqi divisions because this is how big lies are developed and it is the lie that keeps U.S. and British forces in Iraq.

Mazin Younis of the Iraqi League described his investigations into human rights abuses in Iraq. He described multiple visits to Basra and was shocked to learn of the abuses that were occurring at the hands of British troops. He put a human face to the tragedy by describing a young Iraqi girl, Aysha Saleem, who was injured by shrapnel after a bomb destroyed her home killing 8 members of her family. He described how she survived because her grandmother who slept with her every night "shielded her from the explosion." An eyewitness account says how the grandmother was torn apart but Aysha was protected. The other members of Aysha's family killed were her three year old brother, Omar, her father, her mother, Atika, who was 24 and six months pregnant —the baby was born and was alive for a couple of hours after the attack."

Ayatollah Jawad al-Khalisi President of the Iraq National Foundation Conference said he came to "help heal the wounds the war has opened." He described how the current hostage taking of Christian Peace Workers is a blow against "our efforts for peace." And, how they were doing their "best to have them released unharmed." He urged more demonstrations by the anti-war movement as they have a big, positive impact in Iraq. He understood how the soldiers came from the poorer classes in Iraq, how they welcome their families speaking out and how "we have sympathy for all these people." The Ayatollah, who had been imprisoned and tortured under Saddam's regime, pointed out how the occupation forces are "imprisoning people where Saddam's secret police imprisoned people and are doing the same things that Saddam did." Today, people in Iraq are afraid to go out as they do not know what will happen to them. When he is asked about Iraq elections he describes them and the constitution as "a 'big lie' sold by the Western media – fake elections and a fake constitution." Echoing Sami Ramadani he said Iraqis can live together "these differences have existed for a long time but we have lived together for long time. The occupation has escalated problems, increased divisions in an attempt to divide the Iraqi people and redraw the map of the Middle East in favor of their interests." He said "the war is illegitimate and illegal – no subsequent UN resolutions change that reality. And, the resistance is legitimate." He was careful to point out that terrorism is not legitimate and rejected it. He concluded: "Occupation is the worst act of terrorism as it strips people of their dignity. Human rights have no value under occupation as soldiers and mercenaries can kill anyone at any time."

In my comment I said whenever President Bush speaks about Iraq Americans must determine whether to believe him. Two big important areas of false statements that need to be responded to include the under counting of U.S. casualties. President Bush likes to say he supports the troops, speak in front of military and veteran audiences so it is important for these people in particular to know he intentionally undercounts their injuries. Secondly, people in the United States and Great Britain must not believe the claim that the U.K. and U.S. will be able to stabilize Iraq. With the history of an illegal invasion, the killing of civilians, the torture of prisoners and the use of chemical weapons in Fallujah, we cannot win the hearts and minds of Iraqis.

Military Family and Iraq Veterans

A panel on military families and Iraq war veterans featured many prominent peace advocates from those communities. The British peace mother, Rose Gentle, described the death of her son, Gordon, as "a murder by my government." She says her "sons life is worth more than oil." Another British mother, Ann Lawrence said her son Mark had a duty to serve his country but "their country and government had a duty to them and it brings us no comfort that Mark died for a lie in an illegal war." John Stockton's son Simon told him before going to Iraq "Dad, there is a madman over there and he can deploy weapons of mass destruction in 45 minutes." But, Mr. Stockton said: "The madman turned out to be the man in charge of our country." Reg Keys, whose son Tom died in Iraq, ran against Tony Blair in the last election said: "This country spends 700 hours debating the killing of foxes and seven hours debating the killing of people – we have our priorities wrong." He has come to conclude his son did indeed die for a noble cause that being "we will not tolerate wars based on false pretenses."

Among the soldiers that spoke were Ben Griffin who served 8 years in the Army but became a conscientious objector after seeing what was really happening in Iraq. He described Iraq as "like a gold rush, indigenous people having our way of life forced on them brutally while multinational corporations plunder their resources." He was particularly critical of "production sharing agreements that pass Iraqi oil onto multinational oil companies." He said "Blair promised an ethical foreign policy and now we've become the lap dog of American imperialism." He said "I volunteered for the Army and went to Iraq of my own free will but I did not volunteer to be lied to, to fight an illegal war and protect the interests of multinational corporations."

Related to this were comments by Chris Nineham of the Stop the War Coalition who described how British and U.S. troops are losing faith, how they have low morale and their primary goal is to get out of Iraq alive and in one piece. He discussed the history of the Vietnam War and how when soldiers in Vietnam turned against their officers the war was impossible to continue. He pointed to several U.S. and British military reports that indicated that this is beginning to occur in Iraq.

Kelly Dougherty of the U.S. group Iraq Veterans Against the War served in the Army National Guard for eight years in the Balkans and one year in Iraq. She helped form Iraq Vets Against the War because she believes the voices of Veterans need to be heard. She described how when she was in Iraq she spent a lot of her time protecting Halliburton convoys, including protecting broken down Halliburton vehicles – waiting for them to return to get them and then when they didn't return burning them. She described how soldiers wanted to help Iraqis but "we could not help but see how our bombs hurt." She described how military convoys are ordered to never stop and how this results in Iraqi civilians being killed by convoys driving over them. She says her friends coming back from Iraq are missing limbs, can't sleep, abuse alcohol and drugs, commit suicide "because they cannot reconcile what they did in Iraq." She concluded: "Occupation does not make us safer. Our humanity is on the line. Freedom in Iraq cannot really start until the U.S. forces leave."

Medea Benjamin of Code Pink excited the crowd with a speech that recited how the United States and Great Britain abusive actions were not consistent with democracy. She announced that next year a new organization would be formed women opposed to war that would further expand the role of women in the leadership of the anti-war movement.

The panel concluded with Cindy Sheehan who said "ending the Iraq war is so important, so urgent. There is no more important job than peace and bringing the war criminals at Ten Downing Street and the White House to justice." She described how the media often ask "stupid questions" like "Your son volunteered?" Her response "Are you saying he got what he deserved?" Or, "Do you want Iraq to descend into chaos?" She responds "What is your definition of chaos? Look at Iraq today." And, "Do you think you're being used?" Her response, "Do you think you are being used!?" She urges people to get active, take action and not to stand for the abuses of government saying "They will only take away our freedoms if we let them do it."

Bringing Bush and Blair to Account

Tariq Ali, a noted novelist, historian and campaigner of the new left, spoke on a panel concerning bringing Bush and Blair to account. He said that "while there are difficult times ahead, this occupation cannot last. The Iraqi people will determine their own future, not Bush or Blair. All this talk of invading Syria or Iran is bravado – the do not have the troops."

Hassan Juma, President of the Southern Iraqi Oil Workers' Union, described how union workers have continued to fight for their rights despite abuse and incarceration; how they see the war is really about the United States and Great Britain taking Iraq's oil saying "the U.S. has evil intentions and is willing to kill for its own benefit." Juma described Iraq oil as "a national treasure for Iraqis." He said "We will die for our objectives" and listed as their first objective "all occupation forces leave immediately and unconditionally leaving Iraqi people to decide their own fate, their own future."

Hanna Abrahim of the Iraq organization Free Will described how occupation forces kidnap women as hostages, "not as terrorists, but to threaten their men, to let them know their women can be taken and held." She says "one woman who was released, said the first question they asked her was 'are you a virgin?' but the occupiers do not realize this will cause more men to resist. It will bring more terrorism." She says "America is bringing terrorism to Iraq." She describes as "absurd" the notion that "we need war in order to have peace." She concludes that Bush and Blair are "bringing shame to their own countries."

Ann Wright a former U.S. military and State Department official described how "two and a half years ago I would have been the least likely person to be here having served 29 years in the U.S. military and 15 years in the State Department." But, she resigned in March 2003 when the Iraq War began and now says "We need to indict and bring criminal charges against the leadership of the United States and Great Britain." She also pointed out how the U.S. is having such difficulty recruiting that they send recruiters to other countries like Mexico, noting that "100 Mexicans have died in Iraq and on some of the Pacific Islands most of the men are gone because they have been recruited by the U.S. Army." She described one of her proudest moments as when she recently went to a Senate Foreign Relations Committee meeting where Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was testifying and stood up and shouted "Stop the war, stop the killing!" And, she was also arrested over Thanksgiving in Crawford for challenging a new ordinance that prohibited camping alongside the road. She urged others to take similar action, urging Britons to challenge the new ordinance preventing demonstrations near Parliament.

British Green Party representative, Paul Ingram described how "this is personal. Bush and Blair need to be held accountable." Further, he said "the new Iraqi government will have on its desks 'production sharing agreements' which will hand over Iraqi oil to U.S. companies. And, military forces will stay to enforce these agreements."

David Swanson of After Downing Street urged the impeachment of President Bush. He pointed out how the corporate media ignored the Downing Street Memos until our coalition forced them to cover it by getting it covered on the web. The furor grew so widely that USA Today even published excuses as to why they were so late in reporting on the memos. He said "What we are doing is getting the Romans to oppose the empire when many do not even realize they are part of an empire and others think the empire is good." But, today a majority of Americans support impeachment if Bush lied to send us to war. He concluded "we need an international alliance to impeach Bush and Blair."

John Rees of the Stop the War Coalition emphasized how "if we heard of a military convoy overrunning civilians in colonial India we would not believe it – but it is happening today." He said "with the participation of the large anti-war delegation from the U.S. the media can no longer say the anti-war movement in Britain is anti-American – we are opposed to the policies of the U.S. government, not to its people." He applauded the work of the international anti-war movement saying "they would not be talking about a draw down of troops if it were not for our pressure along with the success of the Iraqi resistance. We must keep marching until they stop killing and settle for nothing less than total withdrawal."

One of the British crowds favorite was Walter Wolfgang, a small 82-year old Jewish escapee from the Nazis who was manhandled out of Labor conference on September 29, 2005 for daring to yell "nonsense" at Foreign Secretary Jack Straw. To the roar of the crowd, Wolfgang proclaimed "many of those who supported the war but now say it was wrong also say 'but we can't leave' – now that's nonsense!" He broached the common sense position "because we have caused the problem by engaging in an unjustified invasion we cannot be part of the solution." He concluded to cheering "We cannot afford the world to revert to barbarism. We must win. We shall win. We can overcome."

Building an International Movement

Ismael Patel of Friends of Al Aqsa described these as the "most dangerous times not only because we have the technology to destroy the world but because we have leaders that have chosen to divide us saying they are 'with us or against us.'" Herbert Docena of Focus on Global South said "it should not be up to Bush and Blair to determine the terms of withdrawal, that is like letting the rapist determine the victim's therapy." He urged "real solidarity with the Iraqi people" and "putting down the lie that Iraqis are all terrorists." Sabah Jaward of Iraqi Democrats Against the Occupation said "The U.S. is seeking global domination, this requires a global response."

Judith LaBlanc of the U.S. based United for Peace and Justice described these as "times of great danger and great suffering, but also a great moment for this historic movement." She pointed to the AFL-CIO urging an end to the war after local organizing showed widespread support in the labor movement. She also described the Dakota Indian tribe showing their support for an end to the war by presenting Cindy Sheehan with a quilt made by 500 Dakota families. She said "our movement is only as strong as the international movement. And we cannot accept partial withdrawal. It must be complete withdrawal with no military bases left behind."

Dr. Azzam Tamini of the Muslim Association of Britain urged the international peace movement to seek peace not only in Iraq but in Palestine as well. Those who occupy both countries he says "seek their victims to capitulate their lives and resources. The occupiers would pay billions for peace but money can't buy dignity. Millions are willing to stand up and die for dignity." "Peace," he went on to say "must be armed by justice, with no fear of political power or weapons." He also described truth as an essential for finding a real peace and asked "Why do Europeans and Americans continue to deny what they did to Palestinians and Iraqis. Millions are refugees because they want Israel to exist in my land."

Member of Parliament Jeremy Corbyn who is an anti-war activist said "the international peace movement has been built but it will exist by its actions." He noted there are conflicts throughout the world that should not be accepted or ignored. The cause of all these conflicts he said "global inequality – global corporations that fund the U.S. military in order to get the resources from weaker and poorer countries. Only rational sharing and fair use of resources will lead to peace."

The final speaker, Member of Parliament George Galloway, said to a cheering crowd that "everything this great movement said about Iraq turned out to be true. Everything our enemies, not just the politicians but the corporate media, said turned out to be a lie. We've already had our first victory, Tony Blair will not be able to join Bush in any attack on Iran or Syria." He described the power of the truth when he discussed his famous trip to the United States to appear before a Senate committee, saying "The reason my visit to the Senate on May 17 was as popular as it was because I got up close to the killers and crooks and told them the truth." He applauded the U.S. people for seeing the truth saying "amidst the fog of war and disinformation" in the media. He concluded we must not stop until "Bush and Blair are brought to account." Further he said we must realize that "all of those who voted for this slaughter are guilty of murder. There is no point returning those who voted for the war, those who voted for an illegal war must be removed in the next election."

Byrd Warns Frist against 'Nuclear Option'

"If he ever tries to exercise the nuclear option, he's going to see a real filibuster if I'm living and able to stand on my feet or sit in my seat," Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.) said in a Senate debate with Frist (R-Tenn.) "If the senator wants a fight, let him try it," said Byrd, the Senate's senior Democrat. "I'm 88 years old, but I can still fight, and fight I will for freedom of speech. I haven't been here for 47 years to see that freedom of speech whittled away and undermined."

Der Criirem will völlig unabhängige Informationen liefern.

- Die Betroffenen waren bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt weitgehend beschwerdefrei;

- sie leiden an der für das Mikrowellensyndrom charakteristischen Kombination von Symptomen;

- viele Anwohner sind im gleichen Zeitraum an ähnlichen Symptomen erkrankt;

- etliche der genannten Symptome sind eindeutig sichtbar ( Rötung und Bräunung der Haut, Augenschwellung, Augenrötung, fahle Gesichtsfarbe, Haarausfall) und messbar (Blutdruck, Herzfrequenz, Gewicht);

- einzelne Symptome treten auch bei Besuchern nach kurzer Zeit auf;

- ein großer Teil der Symptome verschwindet nach Verlassen des Wohnviertels;

Chronische Cephalgie (besonders re Hinterkopf)

Hämmerndes Dauergeräusch im Kopf

Schmerzen und Schwellung li Gesichtshälfte

Schwere Schlafstörungen

Unruhe, Depressive Stimmung

G. F. u. I., ………..

B. M. u. B., …………….

B.W., …………….

G. M., …………………..

J. M., ………………

C. , …………………

Außerdem bei Anwohnern des Mobilfunksenders Raster, Gewerbegebiet:

SB., …………………..

B., ……………………..

09481 Scheibenberg, Pfarrstr.

01328 Dresden-Weissig, Radeberger Str.

01159 Dresden, Alfred-Thiele-Str

Sehr geehrte Frau Ministerin,

Can mobiles cause depression? Cellphone smog could aid depression

Cellphone smog could aid depression: Study

Press Trust of India

New Delhi, December 12, 2005

Concerns expressed on possible effects of mobile phones on humans have been dismissed by people involved in the business, but a recent research suggests that the electromagnetic "smog" from mobile phones and electronic goods could be playing a role in aiding depression.

In a study done in Australia pertaining to the period between 1968 and 2002, the researchers came to the conclusion that the suicide rates increased during geomagnetic storms, triggered by solar flares during these years.

"The sample was huge, involving 51,845 males and 16,327 females between 1968 and 2002. It would be useful to replicate this again; we did a previous study and found similar results. This suggests that electromagnetic radiation does affect behaviour" says Prof Michael Berk, Department of Clinical and Biomedical Sciences, University of Melbourne, Australia.

The study by Prof Berk came in support of the hypothesis that mood, and indeed suicidality, can be influenced by disturbances in the electromagnetic field in our environment and may have an adverse impact on mental health.

Man-made disturbances in the electromagnetic field are those caused by the power distribution grid and electrical devices.

It is here that the day to day devices like microwave ovens and mobile devices that emit magnetic fields come into the picture.

According to Prof Berk, two previous, but less comprehensive studies had also shown a positive relationship between geomagnetic storm activity and an increased incidence of suicide.

Blood pressure was shown to increase significantly for males and females when there was an increase in geomagnetic activity.A positive trend was also noticed between geomagnetic activity and subjective psycho-physiological complaints.

On the connection between mobile phones and depression, doctors are sceptical. " Depression is a psychiatric disorder and I am sure in 99 per cent case, it is the case. This is not seasonal as the study suggests," says Dr Samir Parikh, a Consultant Psychiatrist in New Delhi. "Magnetic field exposure is not a sufficient cause of depression or suicide," he says.

"Moreover, electromagnetic radiation is not always dangerous. Extremely high frequencies of electromagnetic waves (EHF-therapy) are used by doctors to treat various forms of depression in the western countries," says Dr Parikh.

"We cannot be sure what mobiles phones etc do and their effects may differ. This suggests at least that we should look," says Prof Berk.

In another study done this year on the impact of standard mobile exposure on 18 children, 10-12 years of age, it was noticed that there was a tendency for reaction time to be shorter during exposure to microwave radiation. Further, the scientist involved in the study were of the opinion that effects of radiation from a GSM handset could be different from a analogue handset.

So what do the studies done so far on mobile devices' effects say? They are inconclusive and that's the way the mobile manufacturers would like to see them.

EMF influences on depression

Following is an article from irishhealth.com reported by Sylvie in France about an Austalian study! I have not heard about this study but here is what the Irish are saying about it.

While we are on the topic, about a year ago I had the opportunity to ask Yuri Grigoriev, chairman of the Russian National Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (RNCNIRP) about the possibility that cell phone use by teenagers may be linked to a rise in teenage depression. He verified that this was a known problem from their understanding.

[Posted: Mon 12/12/2005]

An electromagnetic ’smog’ from mobile phones and electronic goods could be contributing to depression, according to a new study.

The study, carried out on nearly 70,000 people in Australia between 1968 and 2002, supports the hypothesis that a person’s mood can be influenced by disturbances in the electromagnetic field in our environment and that this can affect our mental health.

Man-made disturbances in the electromagnetic field are those caused by power distribution grids and electrical devices, such as microwaves and mobile phones.

The researchers said suicide rates increased during ‘geomagnetic storms’ during the years covered by the study.

They found that blood pressure was shown to increase significantly for males and females when there was an increase in geomagnetic activity.

A positive trend was also noticed between geomagnetic activity and subjective psycho-physiological complaints.

Some commentators, however, feel the results of the Australian study are inconclusive and that there is not enough evidence to date that magnetic field exposure is a cause of depression or suicide.

Do ambient electromagnetic fields affect behaviour? A demonstration of the relationship between geomagnetic storm activity and suicide.

Department of Clinical and Biomedical Sciences-Barwon Health, University of Melbourne, Geelong, Australia.

The relationship between ambient electromagnetic fields and human mood and behaviour is of great public health interest. The relationship between Ap indices of geomagnetic storm activity and national suicide statistics for Australia from 1968 to 2002 was studied. Ap index data was normalised so as to be globally uniform and gave a measure of storm activity for each day. A geomagnetic storm event was defined as a day in which the Ap index was equal to or exceeded 100 nT. Suicide data was a national tally of daily male and female death figures where suicide had been documented as the cause of death. A total of 51 845 males and 16 327 females were included. The average number of suicides was greatest in spring for males and females, and lowest in autumn for males and summer for females. Suicide amongst females increased significantly in autumn during concurrent periods of geomagnetic storm activity (P = .01). This pattern was not observed in males (P = .16). This suggests that perturbations in ambient electromagnetic field activity impact behaviour in a clinically meaningful manner. The study furthermore raises issues regarding other sources of stray electromagnetic fields and their effect on mental health. Bioelectromagnetics. (c) 2005 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Comments on depression and EMR

From Betty Vanables:

Hi Don, a little more on depression your readers might find of interest Regards, Betty

DEPRESSION AND EMR

From files of the EMR Safety Network Int’l

A female, mid sixties, had experienced bouts of depression over a number of years which were attributed medically to her disturbed sleep and personal problems. Though she had an aversion to drug therapy anti-depressants seemed the only solution, to which she resorted from time to time. Learning of EMR health effects she took steps to remove EMR from her bedroom with subsequent pleasing results in quality of sleep, lack of depression, general wellbeing, improved energy levels. Three years later circumstances necessitated a change in household arrangements that once again exposed her to the original levels of EMR. Over the next 8 –10 weeks this woman experienced a distinct lowering of energy and wellbeing and a deepening depression the cause of which she could not discern. She lost interest in life and found it extremely difficult to start the day. Recalling her information on EMR she once again removed EMR from her sleeping area which resulted in her mood and depression lifting and a return to a cheerful manner and regaining an interest in her activities. Over a period of 10 days or so this lady experienced a gradual return to a depression-free healthier frame of mind.

Following are a few references linking depression and EMF/R where electromagnetic field therapy was used in treating Parkinson’s Disease. (PD) (Ref.1) Some success has been achieved in treating the tremours of PD with EMF under controlled conditions with therapeutically administered doses at specific frequencies. These conditions are quite unlike those where random exposures to EMF have adverse effects on people, as their testimony reveals. Dr Sandyk’s study reveals a number of neuropsychiatric diseases including depression , which are influenced by environmental cues, including magnetic fields.

Risikodiskussion Mobilfunk

Sehr geehrte Frau Dr. Herr,

Bankrupt: 46 trillion US liability

The Charleston Gazette, W.Va. Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News Dec. 10 - When Gov. Joe Manchin took over state government nearly a year ago, West Virginia faced $10 billion unfunded liabilities in state pensions, Workers' Compensation, health insurance and other long-term obligations. Commendably, Manchin eliminated much of this burden through bold steps such as privatizing Workers' Comp and boosting the coal severance tax.

Meanwhile, the Mountain State's debt was infinitesimal, compared to stupendous, colossal, astronomical, cataclysmic, monumental federal shortfalls that have grown under President Bush.

U.S. Comptroller General David Walker, head of the Government Accountability Office, declared in an Oregon speech last week that federal unfunded liabilities "were $20 trillion at the end of fiscal 2000 and are at $46 trillion today."

Astounding! During the Bush term -- as war spending soared and enormous tax giveaways were handed to the affluent -- potential long-range national debt more than doubled. This plunge toward bankruptcy was discussed in a Thursday commentary by Charleston financial consultant Howard Swint.

The comptroller general serves 15-year terms and cannot be ousted, which makes him free from political pressure. Previously, Walker wrote in Business Week:

"Both U.S. government spending and tax cuts are spiraling out of control. Recent increases in federal budget deficits have far outpaced the cost of the global war on terrorism and incremental homeland security costs. Although the $319 billion fiscal 2005 deficit was considerably lower that the previous year's, it is still imprudently high -- especially given that federal spending is expected to increase dramatically when the Baby Boomers begin to retire later this decade.

"Less well known, the federal government's long-term liabilities and net commitments, such as those relating to Social Security and Medicare, have risen from just over $20 trillion in fiscal 2000 to more than $43 trillion in fiscal 2004, in large part because of passage of the Medicare prescription drug bill in December 2003. This translates into a burden of more than $150,000 per American and $350,000 per full-time worker, up from $72,000 and $165,000 in 2000."

Facing gigantic future debt, Gov. Manchin wisely reduced the burden -- but Republicans in Washington do just the opposite: They keep demanding more tax cuts for the wealthy, eliminating revenue needed to pay Washington's perilous future debt. After the Bush administration ends, successors will be trapped, forced to find ways to pay the $46 trillion obligation that is being ignored and worsened today. Comptroller General Walker quoted George Washington's 1796 farewell address, in which he warned Congress against "ungenerously throwing upon posterity the burden which we ourselves ought to bear." But Washington's sensible advice is being trampled by today's leaders.

Vote may occur any day!

The U.S. House of Representatives votes this week on a Republican-backed bill that would make it a felony to be an undocumented worker and gut the due process rights of legal immigrants and U.S. citizens.

On Thursday, Dec. 8, 2005, the House Judiciary Committee passed along strict party lines the measure by Committee Chairman James Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.). This GOP-sponsored bill, H.R. 4437, would among other things make the crime of being here illegally an "aggravated felony," meaning the entire undocumented population, including 1.6 million children, would be permanently barred from the U.S. Extreme provisions buried in the bill would target legal immigrants, citizens and those applying for citizenship--taking away basic rights like a day in court and a meaningful defense.

H.R. 4437 subverts America's most deeply held values, including a day in court, checks and balances, and freedom from unjust and arbitrary detention. Instead of fixing our broken immigration system, this bill will make matters worse by turning millions of decent, hard-working people into criminals, driving them further underground and pushing more workers into the black market of smugglers and criminals. What we need is a system allowing people already here to earn the right to stay by continuing to perform work crucial to the U.S. economy, reforms such as the bipartisan, broadly supported AgJobs bill, cosponsored by both Democrats and Republicans.

The cruel and extremist Sensenbrenner bill is headed for a vote by the entire House this week. Your House representative needs to hear from you about why this bad bill should not pass. Instead, he or she should support comprehensive immigration reform such as the AgJobs bill (H.R. 884.) Please call and e-mail your U.S. Representative. Ask him or her to vote against this bill.

Two congressmen regret their vote to authorize war

The Star-Ledger [Newark, NJ] December 11, 2005

By ROBERT COHEN,
STAR-LEDGER WASHINGTON BUREAU

WASHINGTON -- Two Democratic congressmen from New Jersey who voted for the Iraq war three years ago now say they made a mistake.

Reps. Steven Rothman (D-9th Dist.) and William Pascrell (D-8th Dist.) said they based their 2002 vote on faulty intelligence supplied by the Bush administration that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction and that Saddam Hussein posed a direct threat to the United States.

If they could do it all over again, the two lawmakers said during interviews last week, they would vote "no."

"I made a mistake. I must be held accountable," Pascrell said. "But I also point to the president and blame him. He must be held accountable. I am not in denial. He is."

Added Rothman: "If I knew then what I know now, I would not have voted to authorize the president to go to war. . . . Practically all of the information had persuaded me a pre-emptive strike against Saddam Hussein was necessary. It turns out to have been factually wrong."

Rep. Robert Andrews (D-1st Dist.), the only other New Jersey Democratic congressman to vote for the invasion, recently has criticized the administration's handling of the war, but still says "Saddam Hussein was a threat to this country who needed to be removed."

The comments come as public opinion has grown increasingly negative about the president's handling of the war, in which more than 2,100 American troops have been killed and about 16,000 wounded, and calls for an immediate withdrawal have intensified.

BUSH DEFENDS DECISION

President Bush has mounted a campaign of speeches defending the 2003 invasion, declaring that progress is being made and assuring the American people he has a strategy to defeat the Iraqi insurgency and eventually bring the troops home.

The president has refused to set a timetable or cede ground to some Democrats who see the war as counterproductive and want a troop withdrawal to start immediately. Bush has said he will rely on the judgment of senior military commanders and not be guided by "artificial timetables set by politicians in Washington."

Last week, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said he expects some 20,000 U.S. troops to return home from Iraq after this week's elections there, and suggested some of the remaining 137,000 forces could pull out next year "if conditions permit."

The state's seven Democratic House members, like their counterparts nationally, are divided over how the U.S. should now proceed. Some want a troop withdrawal to start immediately while others favor a more cautious approach. All six New Jersey Republican congressmen support the war. They argue a precipitous exit would aid America's enemies, hurt U.S. national security interests and lead to greater chaos in Iraq.

"It is a much more difficult war than we thought it would be," Rep. Jim Saxton (R-3rd Dist.) said. "But we have to stay the course. I subscribe to the notion that showing weakness by pulling out of Iraq would embolden those who oppose us."

Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-11th Dist.) said he has no regrets about voting to go to war, firmly believes Saddam was a threat to U.S. security and feels progress is being made in Iraq.

"The absolutely wrong message would be sent if we were to set specific dates for troop pullout or promote the notion of an immediate withdrawal," Frelinghuysen said. He said troop decisions must depend on circumstances in Iraq and the advice of the military, not domestic political considerations.

That view is shared by Reps. Frank LoBiondo (R-2nd Dist.), Christopher Smith (R-4th Dist.), Scott Garrett (R-5th Dist.) and Michael Ferguson (R-7th Dist.). All voted for the war except Garrett, who was not yet in Congress.

Four state Democrats - Reps. Rush Holt (D-12th Dist.), Donald Payne (D-10th Dist.), Frank Pallone (D-6th Dist.) and Pascrell - said they back the position of Rep. John Murtha (D-Pa.), the hawkish Marine veteran who has called for Bush to start withdrawing troops immediately.

"If the United States gets out of the way of being a flash point, the Iraqis will come up with a solution of their own to deal with the insurgents," Payne said. "We should still give them economic aid and military support, but a drawdown should begin early next year. We need to keep reassessing the situation, but the goal should be removal of our troops within a year."

A more gradual approach to removing the troops is supported by Reps. Andrews, Rothman and Robert Menendez (D-13th Dist.), who officially was named by Gov.-elect Jon Corzine Friday to succeed him in the Senate.

Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) is in that same camp. He has called on Bush to come forward with a "concrete plan" to stabilize Iraq so troops can start to be removed, but has not urged an immediate withdrawal.

Andrews said he supports a phased withdrawal of U.S. troops "as soon as practicable," meaning when the Iraqis are capable of taking on greater responsibility. He said a small troop withdrawal could probably begin relatively soon, but added, "I don't support a hard and fast time deadline."

Menendez criticized Bush for needlessly starting and then mishandling the war, but said he is not ready to endorse an immediate pullback of U.S. troops. He said there need to be established "benchmarks" showing Iraqi capability to take over the job that can be tied to a phased-out military presence.

MARCH 18 - 19: A Call to Action

World Unity Against The WAR - Bring All the Troops Home Now!

End All Occupations

Stop the War Abroad and the War at Home

Unite Against Racism, Poverty & War

In New York City - March from Harlem to Times Square!

Demonstrations in Boston; Detroit; Denver; Baltimore; Atlanta; Los Angeles; San Diego; Raleigh, NC; Washington, DC; Buffalo; and across the country!

The Troops Out Now Coalition joins the world movement against the war in calling for coordinated mass protests and resistance to the war and occupation of Iraq on the weekend of March 18 and 19, the third anniversary of the U.S. invasion. It must be clear that the people will not be fooled by partial withdrawal plans. We demand the withdrawal of all occupation troops now.

Let's stand together with our sisters and brothers across the world against all colonial occupations from Iraq and Palestine, to Afghanistan and Haiti, to the Philippines, South Korea and Puerto Rico. Stop the threats on Iran and Venezuela. Hands Off Cuba. Together we demand no more new wars.

Bush's arrogant response to the demand to withdraw the troops from Iraq is a renewed vow to continue the criminal colonial occupation of Iraq and elsewhere until "victory". The leaders of the Democratic Party, for all their criticism of the way that the Bush regime has conducted the war, remain war supporters.

If we've learned anything over the past 3 years, it is that the only force that we can rely on to stop the war and occupation, bring the troops home, and to stop the plan for world empire by military force is the people mobilized into a mass, militant movement that makes itself felt in the streets.

In the U.S., TONC urges all anti-war caolitions and organizations, at the national and local level, to work together on the mobilizations in March for this is the best way to insure that the popular opposition to the war be turned into mass opposition in the streets. It is not necessary that all coalitions have identical views BUT it is necessary that we not allow differences to be an obstacle to unity.

With the level of opposition to the war stronger than ever, we could bring the entire country to a halt on March 18 and 19. We, as a movement, can do that only if we commit to forging unity.

TONC will be organizing for March 18 and 19 in every city large and small, from Boston, to Los Angeles, from Atlanta to Detroit. In New York City, TONC invites everyone to join us in a mass march from Harlem to Times Square for a rally on Saturday, March 18. By marching from the capital of the African-American community in the U.S. to the center of the city, we hope to underscore the reality that we are fighting to stop two wars-- the war abroad and the war at home against racism and poverty.

Amongst the many challenges that we face as anti-war activists and organizers, nothing is more important than linking the concrete struggles of poor and working people, especially people of color in this country, to the anti-war struggle. California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's denial of clemency to death row inmate, Stanley "Tookie" Williams, is only the latest example of the systemic racism that oppresses, tortures and kills people in many different ways.

Our unity is strengthened by supporting full rights for immigrant workers here in the U.S. - not sweeps, arrests, deportation and fear. And our unity is strengthened by standing with people struggling for the right to return to their homes - this includes tens of thousands of people in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast kept from their homes by the criminal neglect and racism of FEMA to the Palestinian people struggling for the right to return to their historic homeland.

The racism and lethal hostility of the government towards poor and working people, exposed by the response to Hurricane Katrina, has made the strengthening of links all the more urgent. TONC proposes that all anti-war and progressive forces demonstrate solidarity with the struggle of Katrina survivors by making the demand for justice for Katrina survivors central to the March protests by engaging communities of color; making the protests relevant to these communities; coordinating with the survivors of Katrina and the activists involved in the Katrina struggle.

Let's keep the movement where it needs to be-- in the streets and let's work together like never before.

Subject: Datenspeicherpflicht kostet einen Eurofighter pro Jahr Date: Montag, 12. Dezember 2005 09:31

Waffen statt Brot: Scharfe Kritik an rot-grüner Rüstungsexportpolitik

12.12.05

Call for Bush to step down in the New York Times

World Can’t Wait - Drive Out the Bush Regime Calls on President Bush to Step Down in full-page New York Times ad.

Today, The World Can’t Wait - Drive Out the Bush Regime organization placed a full-page ad in The New York Times calling for George W. Bush to step down from office, and take his program with him (page A17). Similar calls for the resignation of Donald Rumsfeld, Karl Rove, or Dick Cheney have appeared, but this is the first time an organization has run an ad in a national media outlet calling for the removal of the entire Bush regime and their program.

The World Can’t Wait-- Drive Out the Bush Regime’s Call states that “your government” has not only waged a "murderous and utterly illegitimate war in Iraq,” but is "moving closer each day to a theocracy”. It spells out the reasons why they should step down before the 2008 election. The Call’s list of signers includes Gore Vidal, Harold Pinter, Cindy Sheehan, Kurt Vonnegut, Jonathan Kozol, Jane Fonda, and Cornell West.

The Call ends with the point that “history is full of examples where people who had right on their side fought against tremendous odds and were victorious” but it is also “full of examples of people passively hoping to wait it out, only to get swallowed up by a horror beyond which they never imagined.” The ad calls for a nationwide action intended to “drown out” Bush’s State of the Union address in January. This will consist of local actions as well as a national demonstration in Washington D.C. on the Saturday following the State of the Union Address.

Villagers join forces to block mobile mast

Villagers in West Felton have formed a protest group to try to stop a mobile phone mast being switched on in their area. Campaigners were knocking on doors yesterday, collecting signatures for a petition.

The 50-foot structure was put up near The Avenue in the village near Oswestry in September by mobile phone giant Orange.

Local people, who knew nothing of the plans, fear that it could pose a health risk. They say it is already a blot on the landscape.

Oswestry Borough Council says Orange went through all the proper legal channels in 2002 to get permission for the 15-metre high 3G mast, although new rules mean that councils now have to inform people near mast sites when they are about to be put up.

Protestor Carol Corbett said: “We are fighting for the total dismantling and removal of the mast and have organised a meeting in our village hall on January 18 at 7.30pm.”

“Our MP Owen Paterson is giving us his support and has agreed to present the petition for us.”

The full version of this story appears in the Oswestry edition of tonight’s Shropshire Star.

Planners favour phone mast bid

Lib Dems oppose ex-church scheme

Lucy Harvey

A MOBILE phone mast will be built on top of a Grade II listed former church in Sheffield if city councillors follow planning officers' advice, even though some of their colleagues on the authority object to the plan.

Plans to site the mast on top of the former Walkley Ebeneezer Methodist Church on the corner of South Road and Greenhow Street have provoked concern among residents and strong objection from three local councillors. Previous planning applications to site a 6.5 metre-high flagpole antenna on top of the two-storey building, now used as student accommodation, were refused after residents raised a petition and collected hundreds of signatures.

But a different applicant has now asked permission to use the site to mount smaller flat panel antennae on each face of the building's south-west chimney. The firm has requested an equipment cabinet be based in the cellar of the building with cabling and power feed to the antennae run through a mock drainpipe.

The proposals have prompted 11 letters of objection, including comments from Liberal Democrat councillors Diane Leek, Veronica Hardstaff, and Jonathan Harston.

Objectors highlight possible health implications from the mast and say it is inappropriate in a residential area, close to community groups and a medical centre; it will have a negative impact on local businesses and discourage people from moving to the area.

They also believe it will devalue property and have a detrimental effect on the appearance and character of the listed building.

And they fear because the mast is at the bottom of a hill the signal will be restricted and lead to similar applications for a taller mast in the future and say there is existing mobile phone coverage in the area.

But at the west and north planning and highways board tomorrow planning officers will recommend planning permission is granted.
"The first application proved having a mast there is not the right thing and it was refused on good grounds. Now another company has come in and they think they can do better, but that is against all common sense," said Coun Leek.

"They were very crafty jumping in on the back of the last application and a lot of local people didn't realise there was a new application.

"We have already got masts nearby. This is in the wrong location at the bottom of the hill so it is not going to be able to reach the signals and it sets a dangerous precedent for them to make it bigger in the future. I would not trust them.

"It still has not been proved that the radiation that comes from them is not harmful.

"There is a high concentration of people in the area and it's in a shopping location."

Planning officers report: "Owing to the size, design and stealth appearance of the antennas the development is not considered to detrimentally affect the character and appearance of the listed building or visual amenities of the locality.

"The external finish of the antennas will not be prominent or obtrusive from both short and long distance vantage points of the building. The applicants have discounted a number of alternative sites, which they say are unacceptable from design and siting perspectives and for technical coverage reasons."

Shadow over both parties' houses

Christian Science Monitor
by Daniel Schorr

12/10/05

Speaking to a group about politics in the spring of the year 2000 when the primaries had hardly gotten under way, I was challenged to predict who would be the next president. Not having the foggiest idea, I said, deadpan, that the Democratic convention would break up in chaos, unable to nominate anybody, the Republicans would nominate George W. Bush, who would run unopposed -- and lose. It was just a joke, mind you, but it is now happening that Americans, fed up with Republicans and not seeing much better among the Democrats, are more and more inclined to express their disillusionment with the political system by saying, 'a plague on both your houses'...

Workers, stiffed

The American Prospect
by Robert Gordon & Josh Lynn

12/09/05

Progressive critics of the budget reconciliation bills now being melded together by a joint House-Senate conference committee usually attack the measures as tax breaks for the wealthy, paid for with budget cuts for the poor. That’s true, as far as it goes. Many of the cuts now being considered -- reductions in Medicaid, Food Stamps, and child support enforcement, together with increases in interest rates on student loans -- wouldn’t even finance one-seventh of the recent tax breaks for Americans making over $380,000. But progressives might get more traction by arguing a slightly different point: that conservatives are pushing to eliminate incentives for the work of poor Americans as a way to reduce taxes on the accumulated wealth of the most fortunate. In tax policy, many progressives already complain -- and rightly so -- that President Bush is shifting the tax burden away from capital and onto labor. But the argument equally applies to cuts in programs that provide work incentives by offering the working poor benefits like health care and child care...

Tax breaks instead hung by the chimney with care, for investors and CEOs, hands already there. America's rich nestled all snug in their beds as $95 billion danced in their heads. It was expected, of course, that the House of Representatives would do the deed they promised to do before Thanksgiving. They cut $50 billion last month from programs serving low-income Americans. This week they passed the final part of what amounts to $95 billion in tax cuts. It represents a height of taking from the poor to give to the rich. Out went billions for student loans, Medicaid and food stamps. In came billions for stock dividends and capital gains. Regardless of political leanings, economists know where the money is going...

The biggest thing Democrats have in their favor is a White House that has lost its swagger

Free fall

The American Prospect
by Terence Samuel

12/09/05

The holidays are coming, people are not broke and they are feeling pretty good about themselves, and that for the moment may have arrested George W. Bush’s downward spiral in the polls. It’ll be interesting to see how Democrats react to that piece of good news for the White House. In fact, the Democrats have one, simple job for the next 11 months: to not do anything stupid to get in the way of the GOP’s overall campaign of self-immolation. And to that end, the evidence suggests that, at least for a little while, they shouldn't say anything at all. For one thing, there is a credible argument to be made that no one is listening anyway. And there is an even larger fear that they will say the wrong thing. The recent attempts by President Bush to rescue his Iraq policy offer yet another example of why the biggest thing Democrats have in their favor is a White House that has lost its swagger. Their biggest problem may be a Democratic Party that can’t seem to find its own mojo...

Last month, by a vote of 237-4, the US Conference of Catholic Bishops adopted a pastoral statement calling for an end to the death penalty. ... The bishops acknowledge in passing that Catholic teaching has never banned the death penalty outright or declared it 'intrinsically evil.' Nevertheless, they insist, since the modern state 'has other nonlethal means to protect its citizens, the state should not use the death penalty.' ... But the new document is shockingly blunt in brushing aside the suffering of the victims, or the viciousness of the murder, as irrelevant to the question of capital punishment. 'No matter how heinous the crime,' it says, 'if society can protect itself without ending a human life, it should do so.' Executing killers, in other words, has nothing to do with justice. No act of murder, however calculated or cruel or catastrophic, requires as a matter of sheer decency that the murderer forfeit his life...

The Syrian gambit unravels

The official end date of the UN investigation into Hariri's assassination is Dec. 15, but you can be sure that Bolton and the rest of the get-Syria crowd will try to ensure that its life span is extended. They are determined to gin up another war, and they don't care how transparently false the pretext is: these people have raised lying into a sophisticated art form, of which the Mehlis propaganda blitz is just the beginning. They don't care how far-fetched the indictments of their targets appear, nor how often they are debunked: what they're counting on is the residue left by 'news' stories trumpeting 'evidence' that Syria killed Hariri and is wreaking havoc in Lebanon. The debunking takes place on the back pages, while the initial charges were given front-page headlines. This is how the propaganda assault works: keep flinging dirt in the hope that at least some of it will stick. If your 'evidence' turns out to be false, and your 'witnesses' start recanting, then don't backpedal – instead, invent new charges. Attack, attack, attack!

Pentagon devising scenarios for martial law in US

By Patrick Martin – World Socialist Web Site

According to a report published Monday by the Washington Post, the Pentagon has developed its first ever war plans for operations within the continental United States, in which terrorist attacks would be used as the justification for imposing martial law on cities, regions or the entire country.

The front-page article cites sources working at the headquarters of the military's Northern Command (Northcom), located in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The plans themselves are classified, but "officers who drafted the plans" gave details to Post reporter Bradley Graham, who was recently given a tour of Northcom headquarters at Peterson Air Force Base. The article thus appears to be a deliberate leak conducted for the purpose of accustoming the American population to the prospect of military rule.

According to Graham, "the new plans provide for what several senior officers acknowledged is the likelihood that the military will have to take charge in some situations, especially when dealing with mass-casualty attacks that could quickly overwhelm civilian resources."

The Post account declares, "The war plans represent a historic shift for the Pentagon, which has been reluctant to become involved in domestic operations and is legally constrained from engaging in law enforcement."

A total of 15 potential crisis scenarios are outlined, ranging from "low-end," which Graham describes as "relatively modest crowd-control missions," to "high-end," after as many as three simultaneous catastrophic mass-casualty events, such as a nuclear, biological or chemical weapons attack.

The Pentagon is underreporting the number of American soldier casualties in Iraq

Incalculable Pain

The Pentagon is underreporting the number of American soldier casualties in Iraq, say House Democrats.

By Mark Benjamin

A group of seven House Democrats wrote President Bush this week, accusing the Pentagon of underreporting casualties in Iraq. It's a shocking charge. The letter writers argue that Pentagon casualty reports show only a sliver of the injuries, mostly physical ones from bombs or bullets. But war doesn't work like that, the Democrats declare, adding that the reports skip a horrible panoply of accidents, illness, disease and mental trauma.

Rasterfahndung auf Vorrat statt Volkszählung

q/depesche 2005-12-12T01:26:37

http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/67224

The Lost Science of Money

THANKS. Suddenly, ALL of contemporary and past History makes sense, if there is any sense at all to be enslaved by GREED & HATE, INC.

Subject: The Lost Science of Money

A free copy of Stephen Zarlinga's $60.00 book, "The Lost Science of Money" is now available for free download at: http://tinyurl.com/djg7m

This is the book that has the bankers eating extra doses of nerve medicine and anti-acids. Here's the write up:

Ninety-five percent of the world's problems are caused by money. Those who control money do not want the rest of us to understand money. Even the politicians and the economists either do not know what money is or they purposely avoid the problem. This very readable history and perceptive insight will draw away your confusion and place you firmly into the light of knowledge of what is money and how does money work? And what happens when people do not know what money is.

WHAT'S GONE WRONG?

Unheard of wealth concentrates into very few, largely undeserving hands. Americans work harder and produce more than ever but increasingly fall into debt and bankruptcy while corruption rules and predators plunder society by merely shuffling papers. Less than 1% of the population now owns about 50% of the wealth, and receives 70% of the income! The Lost Science of Money shows how a false concept of money allowed it to happen, and tells how to reverse it.

SECRET POWER UNMASKED

Here are the keys that unlock the mystery of the money power - the hidden force secretly exercised by those holding society's monetary reins.

The Lost Science of Money exposes the mythology created to protect those who are embezzling from society, under cover of a deceptive ideology of money.

This group has immorally used economic theory as a tool of class war for the past three hundred years, while screaming accusations of "class warfare" against those who question their power!

The author provides the weapons needed to protect self, family, nation, and humanity from the predations of this gang that has shrouded itself under cover of "econo-speak" for so long.

These ideas are presented accurately, but in "down-to-earth" language, without the confusing economic jargon that has usually served to obfuscate the subject. Historical cases with 119 illustrations help to convey the author's unique message.

A GENERATION MISLED

The gates protecting America have been left undefended. September 11th demonstrated only one aspect of this problem. Our people have been under monetary attack from within and from abroad for most of our history; and the physical, financial and psychological damage has far exceeded the terrible losses at New York's Twin Towers.

An entire generation has been led astray into market worship and other forms of religious fundamentalism. A dysfunctional media focuses on the elections and sex habits of politicians while the real outcomes in society are determined behind the scenes by the structure of the nation's money system.

This problem goes much deeper than accounting and stock fraud, and even beyond the graduate schools of business that inculcate such criminal behavior. The deeper causes lie hidden in the structurally corrupt core of our banking system and our schools of economics. It arises from the falsehoods they have spread on the nature of money, allowing their patrons to control the money power, and in turn, to dominate our society.

Those who really want to get to the bottom of the problem will find this book's message timely and valuable.

Rutgers students march on Marine recruiting office

The Star-Ledger [Newark, NJ] Sunday, December 11, 2005

Rutgers students march on Marine recruiting office

BY JOHN WIHBEY, Star-Ledger Staff

Marine Capt. Sharon Dubow sat calmly doing paperwork yesterday afternoon in her New Brunswick recruitment office.

It was just another day on the job. Almost.

A group of 50 or so Rutgers University students and anti-war activists were howling "Liar" and holding signs that said "Killing Iraqis is Not a Career" just a few feet behind her. A pane of glass separated the Marine from protesters.

"I think that it's their right, and we respect it," Dubow said afterward. She said there have been "no big changes" in recruiting numbers from last year to this year.

But the revved-up group of anti-war campaigners wanted to change that.

Rafael Greenblatt, a Rutgers graduate student and event organizer, told a crowd that marched from the school to downtown Monument Square the solution is "to starve the military of the recruits they need to keep this war going."

Speaking in front of a Christmas tree, Greenblatt said, "The only way to resolve these human rights abuses in Iraq is to bring the troops home."

Two activists were arrested last week on Rutgers' New Brunswick campus for disrupting a government recruiting session, and protesters said yesterday they were energized by that event.

One of those arrested last week, Tom Howard, 27, a writer from Mendham Township, said it had been "time to take a principled stand" against what he believed was a CIA recruitment event. He was the final speaker at yesterday's rally, where he and other members of a workers' solidarity group led anti-war chants.

President Bush and administration officials were the ultimate targets of the day's speeches.

"They are filling their pockets on the blood of our children," said Sue Niederer, a Mercer County resident whose only son, Army 2nd Lt. Seth Jeremy Dvorin, 24, was killed in Iraq while defusing a roadside bomb on Feb. 3, 2004. "We must ask them, 'Why aren't your children fighting?'"

The protesters were seeking everything from an end to the war to a change in the military's policy on gays. The U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments last week on whether universities receiving federal funds could ban military recruiters because of the Pentagon's "don't ask, don't tell" rule.

One of the Rutgers protesters' chief gripes yesterday was an advertisement Dubow and the Marines had placed in the student newspaper in October offering "free helicopter rides" to students.

Alex Van Schaick, a senior at the university, said it was an attempt "to get people to feel real macho" to seduce them into joining the Marines.

Dubow said the newspaper notice merely had informational value.

"A lot of people don't know Marines fly. That's why we do it," she said. "When we're up in the air, it's not as if we tie you up and make you sign something."

Two counter-protesters showed up waving American and Iraqi flags and a banner that read "Support Our Troops." One wore sunglasses and gave his name as Tom Dolan. Police told him to leave the area because he did not have a parade permit.

"We're just having a peaceful protest, and they're here trying to block us," Dolan said of an anti-war activist who batted at his flags.

Bruno Corry, a 58-year-old former Marine Corps reservist, said he saw the Iraq war as "a repeat of Vietnam." He and Dolan's compatriot engaged in a shouting match.

"He's trying to tell me they're not using dirty tactics to recruit," Corry said. "I know it's a damn lie."

Land-use impact discovered in global warming

12/11/2005 01:00:00 AM

By Katy Human
Denver Post Staff Writer
http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_3298451

In the Amazon, chopping trees to plant crops can warm the weather almost as much as extra greenhouse gases do. In Colorado, turning woodlands to wheat may counteract global warming, according to a new study.

Land-use changes profoundly affect local and regional climates, scientists wrote in a paper in Friday's issue of Science.

"The bottom line is we've changed the climate system in more significant ways than we realized," said one co-author, Linda Mearns, with the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder.

"Land use is a major change that will have important impacts on regional climates. They may not be as strong as greenhouse gases, but they're certainly nontrivial."

Colorado State University climatologist Roger Pielke Sr. said the new study should "finally" make international climate scientists recognize that the planet's climate system is far more complicated than they once thought.

"I feel vindicated. Very much so," said Pielke, who has argued for a decade that land use can affect climate. Greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, emitted during fossil-fuel combustion, are only part of the climate story, Pielke said.

On Colorado's Front Range, for example, the expansion of irrigated crops has made summers cooler and wetter than they were a few decades ago, he said.

Pielke is not an author of the new study, but commented on it in Science.

"I think Roger (Pielke) thinks this is a bigger deal than I do," said Johannes Feddema, a University of Kansas geographer and the lead author of the new paper.

For the new analysis, Feddema's team plugged land-use changes into a computer model of Earth's climate and asked how the changes would affect climate. In the tropics, converting forest to agriculture warmed the land, accelerating warming caused by greenhouse gases.

In other regions - such as most of the United States - cutting trees for crops actually counteracted warming, Feddema said.

The effects were triggered by a complicated interplay of soil-moisture level, rainfall, snow and albedo - the tendency of the land's surface to absorb or reflect sunlight.

The authors conclude that to predict Earth's future climate, modelers must take land-use changes into account. "We have a long way to go," Feddema said.

Still, he and Mearns said, greenhouse gases generally influence climate much more powerfully than do land-use changes.

In Colorado, for example, a conservative computer model predicts that doubling the carbon-dioxide level in the air will lead to a warming of about 5.5 degrees by 2100, Mearns said. Converting forest into crops might counteract part of that, leading to 3 degrees of warming, she said.

Big Creek Lumber Nightmare

For first-time visitors, finding Kevin Flynn's house in the Santa Cruz Mountains takes detailed instructions, an eagle eye for weathered signposts and, often, a plaintive last-minute cell-phone call from the road.

In this remote neighborhood near Los Gatos, homes are nestled along narrow roads that dip and curve through a fragrant redwood forest, and residents draw their water from mountain streams.

It is a close-knit, eclectic community -- artists, doctors, lawyers, police officers, people who work in Silicon Valley, families, retired couples -- that has galvanized in recent months to oppose a logging proposal by the San Jose Water Co. that residents say will ruin their idyllic neighborhood.

The privately held company wants to chop down many of the largest coast redwoods and Douglas firs in the forest near their neighborhoods.

"It will be a fight to protect our community," said Flynn, 46, a marketing manager in the Internet security field who lives in Chemeketa Park, one of several woodland neighborhoods near the 1,000-acre logging site.

On one side of the battle are residents, who fear that logging will muddy their creeks with sediment, increase the risk of forest fires and landslides, and disrupt their peaceful existence with buzzing chain saws, whining tractors, whirring helicopters and rumbling logging trucks.

On the other side of the debate is the water company, which says the logging will comply with state laws designed to protect the health of the forest, including its creeks and hillsides, and will reduce the fire hazard posed by dense tree stands on the property, which was clear-cut more than 100 years ago and has not been logged since.

"We own a lot of land, and it's our fiduciary duty to ratepayers and to shareholders to manage it as best we can," said Andrew Gere, a civil engineer and director of operations for the water company, which provides water service to more than 1 million customers.

Gere said proceeds from the logging will help fund expensive work in the watershed, such as repairing historic fire roads, terracing steep creek banks to stem erosion and removing brush and hardwoods by hand.

"In the long run, you're going to see an improvement in water quality, if anything, certainly not a degradation," he said.

Terry Clark, 56, who has lived in the mountains for nearly two decades, criticized the company, saying, "They want to turn this watershed into a tree harvesting farm."

Clark, a recreation program planner in Los Gatos, questioned the company's decision to log the largest redwoods in the forest, some of which are more than 3 feet in diameter.

"Those are the trees that survive fires," said Clark, a member of Neighbors Against Irresponsible Logging, which is fighting the logging proposal.

Because the proposal has generated so much controversy, Santa Clara County has hired Thomas Lippe, an environmental attorney whose client list includes the Sierra Club, to scrutinize the plan.

"He is going over the plan with a fine-tooth comb and will identify which issues are of primary concern," said Rachael Gibson, an aide to Santa Clara County Supervisor Donald Gage, who represents people living in the Santa Cruz Mountains. "We really need some help because we don't have any foresters on our staff."

In a 450-page plan submitted to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection in October, the water company proposed harvesting the forest in stages, sending loggers into 100-acre parcels every other year.

The company's ability to log trees on the property, which is located within the 5,000 acres it owns in the Los Gatos Creek watershed, is limited by special rules governing logging in the state's coastal forests.

Trees must be individually selected for logging, and the impact of removing trees on the health of the remaining stands -- and their soil, streams and wildlife -- must be taken into account.

Andrew Morse, a forester with Big Creek Lumber Co., the water company's logging partner, said selective harvesting reduces fire risk by decreasing the number of trees whose branches are touching. It also creates gaps in the forest canopy that allow intermediate-size trees to get more sunlight and nutrients.

"A big part of what we do when we're marking trees for harvesting is look for trees that will benefit from creating some of those small gaps in the canopy," he said.

One of the rules governing selective harvesting allows the water company to remove up to 60 percent of the largest trees (measuring 18 inches or more in diameter) and up to 50 percent of the smaller trees (measuring 12 to 18 inches in diameter) in a forest.

That is a prospect that has caused widespread alarm among people living near the site.

"It would be fair to say it scares the heck out of us, too," said Gibson.

In its proposal, the company said it will log up to 40 percent of the largest trees, 20 percent less than the maximum allowed. So far, though, its attempts to convince critics it will stick to the lower percentage have failed.

"We're left with them wanting us to take them at their word," Gibson said. "That would make anybody nervous."

She said the stakes are high because the plan, once approved, will forever govern logging on the property.

The water company's Gere insists the water company will be a responsible steward of the forest.

"In 15 years, the volume of timber that was removed from a given parcel will have replaced itself," he said. "We can't remove any more trees until that happens."

To address concerns of residents about the impact of logging on forest fires, the water company has hired an independent fire scientist who is creating a model showing how fire will behave in the forest as it exists today, and after it has been logged.

Gere described the $125,000 study -- expected to be completed by spring -- as a good-faith effort to convince residents it is serious about reducing fire hazards.

"When we get those results, we're going to share them with our neighbors," he said.

Clark, of Neighbors Against Irresponsible Logging, said people who live in the Santa Cruz Mountains know the area is prone to fires. "We are certainly in favor of responsible fire prevention," she said. "But that's not what San Jose Water's proposal is all about. It's about commercial logging."

Critics of the logging plan say the company can reduce the fire risk by thinning trees instead of logging the forest.

That is how the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission handles fire suppression in the 23,000-acre watershed around Crystal Springs Reservoir, said spokesman Tony Winnicker.

"We do an annual survey of our lands, and selectively thin vegetation, especially in areas that are close to urban centers or homes and businesses," he said. "We selectively and strategically eliminate trees and clean some of the ground cover. That tends to be brush and eucalyptus trees, which are rapidly growing and extremely combustible."

The state forestry department, which has completed its first review of the San Jose Water Co. plan, has sent it dozens of questions seeking clarification and additional information.

A variety of government agencies are reviewing the plan, including the California Department of Fish and Game, the California Geological Survey, the Regional Water Quality Control Board, the Santa Clara Valley Water District and the Mid-Peninsula Regional Open Space District.

A public hearing on the plan is expected to be held in early 2006.

GOP Seeks Quick Passage of New Patriot Act

By DAVID ESPO, AP Special Correspondent
Fri Dec 9, 7:22 AM ET

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Congressional Republican leaders will press for passage next week of a new Patriot Act to combat terrorism, but a Senate filibuster looms on a measure that liberal and conservative critics alike say is a threat to individual liberties.

"Just as the Senate did four years ago, we should unite in a bipartisan way to support the Patriot Act, to stand up for freedom and against terror," Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., said Thursday as GOP negotiators from the House and Senate sealed their White House-backed compromise.

Rep. James Sensenbrenner, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, issued a statement saying the measure would aid "in the detection, disruption and dismantling of terrorist cells before they strike."

Key provisions cover the ability of law enforcement officials to gain access to a wealth of personal data, including library and medical records, as part of investigations into suspected terrorist activity.

The measure provides a four-year extension of the government's ability to conduct roving wiretaps - which may involve multiple phones - and to seek access to many of the personal records covered by the bill.

Also extended for four years is the power to wiretap "lone wolf" terrorists who may operate on their own, without control from a foreign agent or power. An earlier, pre-Thanksgiving stab at compromise had called for seven-year extensions of these provisions.

Yet another provision, which applies to all criminal cases, gives the government 30 days to provide notice that it has carried out a search warrant.

Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, described the final product as "not a perfect bill but a good one," and credited the White House with helping bring the House and Senate negotiators together.

But lawmakers in both parties attacked the measure. "This battle is not over," said Sen. Russell Feingold, D-Wis., who complained that the bill lacked "adequate safeguards to protect our constitutional freedoms." He vowed to do everything he could, including a filibuster, to stop the bill from passing. [...] Read the rest at: http://tinyurl.com/7fz7u

Torturing the Facts

By MAUREEN DOWD
December 7, 2005
New York Times OP-ED columnist

Our secretary of state's tortuous defense of supposedly nonexistent C.I.A. torture chambers in Eastern Europe was an acid flashback to Clintonian parsing.

Just as Bill Clinton pranced around questions about marijuana use at Oxford during the '92 campaign by saying he had never broken the laws of his country, so Condoleezza Rice pranced around questions about outsourcing torture by suggesting that President Bush had never broken the laws of his country.

But in Bill's case, he was only talking about smoking a little joint, while Condi is talking about snatching people off the street and throwing them into lethal joints.

"The United States government does not authorize or condone torture of detainees," she said.

It all depends on what you mean by "authorize," "condone," "torture" and "detainees." [...] Read the rest at

Dismantling the Public's Right to Know

OMB Watch
Published on 12/01/2005

OMB Watch released a report entitled: "Dismantling the Public's Right to Know: EPA's Systematic Weakening of the Toxic Release Inventory." The report details how under the Bush administration, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is slowly dismantling its flagship environmental information tool: the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI).

The program has been protected and improved for over the last 15 years, since it was put in place during the Reagan administration. The TRI database enables the public to learn about the environmental risks in our workplaces and communities by providing information about hundreds of toxic chemicals released into the environment. Moreover, the TRI program has served as a constant example of the vital role information plays in a democracy, and the importance of the public's right to know. Unfortunately, the program's success has made it a target for those that seek to reduce corporate oversight and accountability. The Promiser in Chief

Sometimes reconstruction delayed is reconstruction denied.

A few months after the invasion of Iraq, President Bush promised to rebuild Iraq's infrastructure and economy. He - or, at any rate, his speechwriters - understood that reconstruction was important not just for its own sake, but as a way to deprive the growing insurgency of support. In October 2003 he declared that "the more electricity is available, the more jobs are available, the more kids that are going to school, the more desperate these killers become."

But for a long time, Iraqi reconstruction was more of a public relations exercise than a real effort. Remember when visiting congressmen were taken on tours of newly painted schools?

Both supporters and opponents of the war now argue that by moving so slowly on reconstruction, the Bush administration missed a crucial window of opportunity. By the time reconstruction spending began in earnest, it was in a losing race with a deteriorating security situation.

As a result, the electricity and jobs that were supposed to make the killers desperate never arrived. Iraq produced less electricity last month than in October 2003. The Iraqi government estimates the unemployment rate at 27 percent, but the real number is probably much higher.

Now we're losing another window of opportunity for reconstruction. But this time it's at home. [...] Read the rest at the New York Times: http://tinyurl.com/dp5bn or at http://guerillawomentn.blogspot.com/2005/12/krugman-promiser-in-chief.html or http://tinyurl.com/9kcs8

Fluoride is linked to 10,000 cancer deaths yearly

Why I threw out all my toothpaste, and my family brushes with Ivory Soap (not Dove or any other soap)....we have no dental bills...except cleaning's and our dentist say's we dont even need that! If you know of someone with dental problems tell them to try Ivory Soap as a toothpaste for a month or two...get ready for a happy experience.

Article:

At first glance, fluoride seems harmless enough. It is a naturally occurring element that has dental protection properties, right? Wrong, look at where fluoride comes from and you will soon begin to see the problem. It is a toxic waste by-product from the aluminium manufacturing process. Highly toxic with proven unwanted side effects. It is harmful to all animal life and is to be avoided at all costs. Fluoride is linked to 10,000 cancer deaths yearly. Fluoridation is also responsible for 40 million cases of arthritis, dental deformity in 8 million children and allergic reactions in 2 million people. - Dr. Dean Burke and Dr. John Yiamouyiannis, National Cancer Institute, USA, 1997

The best solution to oral hygiene would be a natural one, free from alcohol, sodium lauryl sulphate and fluoride. Increasingly, responsible manufacturers are offering a complete range of dental products, specifically designed for families who want safe, yet powerful, dental care - from keeping cavities at bay and plaque under control to eliminating tooth decay and bad breath.
