Dr Martin Blank – Dr. Blank is an Associate Professor in the Dept. of Physiology, College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University, New York, NY and is the former President and Full Member of Bioelectromagnetics Society. Dr Blank's research examines the various ways in which human-made electromagnetic fields used in many of our day to day appliances and telecommunications devices interrupt regular biological functioning. He is a co-author of the influential Bioinitiative report that has led to regulatory change for electromagnetic emissions in Europe, and is the issue editor for Pathophysiology's current issue dedicated to the health and biological effects of electromagnetic emissions.

Thiruvananthapuram: Sweet nothings murmured into a mobile phone spell doom for honeybees, says a study. The booming communication industry is not helping one sector - apiculture - at least. Honey and bee wax are not the only things at stake, though. One-third of our crops need bees to pollinate.

"There is a 60% plunge in Kerala's commercial bee population. Bees are susceptible to diseases and attacks by ants, wasps and wax moths, but vigilant keepers can check these," Sainudeen Pattazhy, reader in zoology, SN College, Punalur, said. His study warns that bees would be wiped out in a decade if mobile phone towers continue to proliferate at the current rate.

I don't think that Urban hives will be very successful with all the Urban phone masts. Could be a greater number of dead bees next year.

Taking the EMF issue seriously with bees could be critical. But they are all burying their heads in the sand.

It's ALL sources of EMF that is having an effect of course...

BACKGROUND: The debate regarding the health effects of low-intensity electromagnetic radiation from sources such as power lines, base stations, and cell phones has recently been reignited. In the present review, the authors attempt to address the following question: is there epidemiologic evidence for an association between long-term cell phone usage and the risk of developing a brain tumor? Included with this meta-analysis of the long-term epidemiologic data are a brief overview of cell phone technology and discussion of laboratory data, biological mechanisms, and brain tumor incidence.

METHODS: In order to be included in the present meta-analysis, studies were required to have met all of the following criteria: (i) publication in a peer-reviewed journal; (ii) inclusion of participants using cell phones for > or = 10 years (ie, minimum 10-year "latency"); and (iii) incorporation of a "laterality" analysis of long-term users (ie, analysis of the side of the brain tumor relative to the side of the head preferred for cell phone usage). This is a meta-analysis incorporating all 11 long-term epidemiologic studies in this field.

RESULTS: The results indicate that using a cell phone for > or = 10 years approximately doubles the risk of being diagnosed with a brain tumor on the same ("ipsilateral") side of the head as that preferred for cell phone use. The data achieve statistical significance for glioma and acoustic neuroma but not for meningioma.

CONCLUSION: The authors conclude that there is adequate epidemiologic evidence to suggest a link between prolonged cell phone usage and the development of an ipsilateral brain tumor.

More cancer to the left? In a new article in Pathophysiology, written by me and Olle Johansson, we point at the fact that both breast cancer and melanoma are more common on the left side of the body in developed countries. According to Maxwell's equations a left laterality would be expected if you sleep for longer times on your right side compared to the left side on wave reflecting metal spring mattresses. Quite often the Essex EHS study is quoted by persons who wish to disprove that electro hyper sensitivity exists. Unfortunately the Essex researchers appear to have 'screwed up' in more ways than one. Other serious problems with this research were previously reported. The link below explains what one of the EHS participants recently discovered about the research.

The research appears to be a very shoddy piece of work that should be withdrawn. Why have the researchers not been brought to task by their academic bosses, for their poor performance?

Electro hypersensitive victims world wide are still feeling the effects of this false and misleading paper.

The Essex EHS Study: they got the results wrong

The data shows how 70% of EHS participants actually got the "ON" signals correct and how Essex researchers redefined the concept of "chance".

For some reason, Essex researchers assumed that electrohypersensitivity symptoms act like a perfect on/off switch so that symptoms would onset and disappear at exactly the same time as the signal.

So, the Essex researchers assumed that EHS had to detect both "ON" (signal) and "OFF" (no signal) equally well in order for the results to count. Problem with that was that insufficient "washout" time was allowed in a shielded area for EHS participants to normalize after the journey to the study facilities.
