The Latest Ruse on Mobile Phone Base Station Health Effects....The Industry Just Never Stops the Manipulation.

A press release came out this week resulting in the type of news coverage seen in the following link: http://news.yahoo.com/s/infoworld/20070124/tc_infoworld/85384_1)

It is another example of a study designed to show a pre-determined outcome that supports the industry's special interests. In our review of the Danish epidemiology study [ http://omega.twoday.net/search?q=Danish+epidemiology+study ], we discuss this in some detail. It is astonishing to me that as the industry continues the ruse -- the ruse continues to have life in the headlines.

A couple of additional observations:

1. This study was funded specifically by a company in the industry that has financial interest in the outcome. The study was done to refute a previous study showing harm from base stations. To their credit, the reporters state as much in the article. But for us, this is a strong hint that something is amiss. We know that industry funded studies, as we have previously discussed on the SWI website, are six times more likely to find "no problem" than independent studies. So, whenever you have an industry funded study, the presumption -- based on real data -- is that it is designed to support the industry's view. If you were a betting person in the industry, you could rest assured that the outcome you want will be delivered six hundred percent more often. Not bad. There is nothing independent about it, and in the case of this new study, the outcome underscores the premise that industry bias is operative.

2. The study did not study the source of the EMR health risk problem as we now know it from mechanism data. Information Carrying Radio Waves (ICRW) are the components that trigger adverse biological responses leading to health effects. ICRW come from people talking on the phone. This study used simulated signals with no talking -- thus, no ICRW. Thus, the study had no chance to find health effects. The study was a set up to show nothing by its design. A low risk study -- without ICRW as part of the exposure matrix.

Nach Meinung des Autors wird die REFLEX-Studie in dem Text der Bundesdrucksache nicht ihrer Bedeutung entsprechend gewürdigt. Es werde der Eindruck erweckt, dass an ihren Ergebnissen durchaus Zweifel angebracht sind, indem insbesondere die folgenden kritische Anmerkungen in den Text eingefügt worden sind:

- "Anstelle von Ringversuchen mit einheitlichen, standardisierten Versuchsprotokollen wurden lediglich eine Vielzahl von Einzelexperimenten durchgeführt, die sich nur in wenigen Bereichen überschneiden oder ergänzen."

- "Mehrheitlich wurden keine genschädigenden Wirkungen festgestellt."

Anmoderation

Die Schlagzeile klang beunruhigend: Handys können Krebs auslösen stand am Mittwoch groß auf Seite 1 der Süddeutschen Zeitung. In dem Artikel unter der Schlagseite hieß es, der langjährige Gebrauch von Mobiltelefone könne möglicherweise des Wachstum von Hirntumore fördern. Das Risiko sei erhöht bei Menschen, die seit mindest 10 Jahren oder regelmäßig oder besonders intensiv ein Handy nutzen. Als Beleg für diese Aussage wurde im Artikel eine Studie von Wissenschaftlern aus skandinavischen Ländern und Großbritannien angeführt.

Wie ist die Studie einzuschätzen. Darüber hat Martin Schramm mit dem Mediziner Prof. Dr. Adlkofer gesprochen. Er koordiniert eine große europäische Untersuchung zu den Auswirkungen elektromagnetischer Felder.

Schramm: Herr Adlkofer, wie schätzen sie diese Ergebnisse der Studie ein, die jetzt für so viel Wirbel sorgte. Was ist das ganze wert?

Adlkofer: Die Studie ist insofern bedeutsam, als sie einen weiteren Baustein liefert zu der Gesamterkenntnis, was für ein Risiko sich stellt bei elektromagnetischen Feldern, wie sie beim Mobilfunk verwendet werden und wie diese sich für den Menschen darstellen.

Schramm: Gibt es ein Risiko, gibt es kein Risiko, was genau lässt sich da sagen?

Adlkofer: Die Studie beantwortet diese Frage nicht. Aber zusammen mit anderen vergleichbaren Studien lässt sich feststellen, dass nach einer Benutzungsdauer von mehr als 10 Jahren das Risiko für Hirntumore doch ansteigen könnte.

Schramm: Also ein weiterer Hinweis, aber kein Beweis. Die Frage ist, kennen wir eigentlich eine Arte Wirkmechanismus der dahinter steht, also wissen wir, wie lebende Zellen tatsächlich auf magnetische Felder reagieren? Sie selbst haben nun ein Forschungsprojekt koordiniert oder koordinieren es, wo es genau um diese Frage geht und sind da auf einen sogenannten gentoxischen Effekt gestoßen. Was genau ist das?

Adlkofer: Gentoxische Effekte sind Veränderungen am genetischen Material und wenn solche Schäden auftreten hat man eine Veränderung festgestellt, die bei der Krebsentstehung immer ganz am Anfang steht. In vielen Fällen wird sie repariert in der Zelle, aber sie kann nicht immer repariert werden. Aber wenn man so eine Veränderung findet, dann ist in der Tat die Frage, was bedeutet das für den Menschen und diese Frage muß man sehr ernst nehmen.

Schramm: Aber auch sie kämpfen um ihre Studie fortsetzen zu können und man fragt sich insgesamt, hat irgendjemand ein Interesse daran bestimmte Richtungen der Forschung zu verhindern. Was ist Ihr Eindruck?

Adlkofer: Mein persönlicher Eindruck ist, dass das Interesse an einer schnellen Aufklärung der Zusammenhänge nicht besonders groß ist.

Schramm: Warum?

Adlkofer: Das sieht man an der Planung der Studien, die durchgeführt werden. Die sind in aller Regel nicht zielführend und das sieht man auch an der Art der Förderung die betrieben wird. Da wird sehr vieles gefördert, was eben nicht unbedingt zum Erkenntnisgewinn führt und in der Diskussion des Themas, dass trotz überzeugender Belege die Stimmung bei der Mehrzahl der Wissenschaftler noch immer die ist, da kann ja eigentlich nichts sein.

Schramm: Wer hat denn aus Ihrer Sicht ein Interesse daran, mögliche Risiken unter den Tisch zu halten?

Adlkofer: Ja, wer ist der Nutznießer für die Einhaltung des Status quo? Die Wissenschaft sicher nicht, die Gesundheitspolitiker sind es auch nicht. Da bleibt eigentlich nur eines, nämlich die Industrie, deren Beitrag zum Bruttosozialprodukt ja nun zweifellos ein ganz erheblicher bereits heute ist und die sich für die Zukunft gewaltige Chancen ausrechnet, damit dieser Beitrag noch sehr viel größer wird.

Schramm: Was wäre die Botschaft an den Hörer, der verunsichert, ratlos zurück bleibt und sich fragt, okay was kann ich tun?

Adlkofer: Sich zu informieren über den Stand der Forschung, die zusammengefasst besagt, ein Risiko ist möglich, es ist nicht bewiesen. Daraus ergibt sich für einen vernünftigen Menschen die Schlussfolgerung: ich werde mit dieser Technik vorsichtig umgehen, ich werde sie benutzen, wann immer ich sie brauche, ich werde sie unter Bedingungen benutzen, in dem ich mich so wenig wie möglich schädige.

Das ist immer der Fall, wenn ich einen guten Zugang zur Basisstation habe, auf diese Weise wird die Energieeinwirkung auf das Gehirn wesentlich geringer und ich kann auch ein Headset verwenden, um mein Gehirn vor der Einwirkung dieser Strahlen zu schützen.

Here are a couple of paragraphs from Roger Coghill's website re SIDS.

These comments and references to other studies, help to support the vital need to evaluate and compare cases of SIDS, Leukaemia, brain cancer, breast cancer, Lou Gehrig's Disease, miscarriage, Alzheimers -- really ANY disease or combination of symptoms re suspected ES/EHS as to whether affected persons are sleeping/were sleeping with or close to electrical items including, but not limited to, appliances, heaters, some telephone equipment, metal beds and headboards, possible wiring problem, pipes with high currents, etc. with persons for which no such exposures relate strongly to that group.

Government and industry have been successful in regard to "pulling the wool over the eyes of the public" by attempting to placate persons with the facts that EMF/EMR is "everywhere." Those facts can not be disputed. Studies will continue to be "inconclusive/ambiguous/misleading/inaccurate" until and unless there is "a focus" on studies re close, chronic, prolonged nighttime electrical exposures.

As most on your list know, Prof. Olle Johansson will produce the needed in-vitro studies that will shed light on "mysteries in epidemiologic studies....." He has already given us the excellent interview "Mysteries in the Skin." Prof. Olle Johansson needs only to have the necessary funding........to do what we so desperately need to HELP SAVE THE CHILDREN!!!! We all know that phrase is "a driving force" that is really behind revealing information that is deliberately being kept from the public and that applies to "every peson" and includes "every single symptom known to man (animal too, of course).

The facts that even "good biological changes" -- "reduced symptoms," even "bone growth," "pain relief," and more can be induced by certain therapeutic EMF stimulators -- non-ionizing radiation, prove substantially that EMF/EMR is responsible for "real health effects" and not just "insignificant biological effects."

Soon government and industry will no longer be able to intimidate and bombard the public with the "criminal rhetoric" that EMF/EMRs' "biological changes" have no relevance in regard to "serious health effects" -- "DISEASE....!!!!" Best wishes and take care - Joanne

However, the ubiquitous nature of EM domestic sources within any home makes it a natural possibility that some SIDS cases, perhaps as many as half, might originate from chronic exposure to ambient EM fields from domestic appliances such as storage or other heaters, electric blankets and the like which are switched on for long periods. Accordingly a possible correlation between SIDS and domestic EM field strength should also be investigated. There are indications, both in the literature and from case series, that this may be so. Ramanathan and Chandra (1988) reported that out of 34 SIDS cases no less than six had been lying on or under electric blankets or electrically heated water beds.

Another reported a SIDS case where the victim had been in a carry cot on a floor heated by underfloor electric heating. A recent Tasmanian study reported that in 69 percent of SIDS cases home heating had been operating at the time. Only 1 percent of Tasmanian homes have central heating and the probability is that the SIDS homes were being heated electrically. Though the princpipal aim of the study was to investigate position, the authors identified heating as being associated independently with SIDS. This was also the case in a Bristol University study (Wigfield et al, 1992) which did not however identify which kind of heating had been involved. It is hard to escape the conclusion that there is a strong association between chronic exposure to ELF electromagnetic fields and SIDS.

Near miss SIDS

This phenomenon is where the parent notices by chance that the infant is unwell (and often cyanosing), and picks up it up, removing it from the distress location, usually to the nearest hospital or doctor's surgery. The infant rapidly recovers and quickly becomes well again, so that in some cases the investigating doctor cannot find any sign of ill health. Sadly a second occurrence after the infant has returned to its habitual environment, is usually not so fortunate in outcome. @PARAHEAD = Position De Jongh reported that 88 percent of SIDS infants are found dead in a prone position, suggesting that this may be due to an agonal response. Other common symptoms are that the infant utters distress cries for some days before death, is often irritable, and will not settle, or refuses a feed. Some infants are found in positions very different from that in which they are placed at bedtime.

All these can be understood in the context of the infant's sensitivity to EM fields, possibly because the cerebral myelination process is not complete in human beings until one year of life, and responds by attempting to evade the EM field region. It was suggested by Ponsonby and subsequently by Fleming that placing the infant in a supine position would by itself lessen the risk of SIDS occurrence. However recent national UK publicity to promote the advice to place the baby in a supine position for sleep has always been accompanied by advice not to overheat the infant ( FSIDS pamphlet, 1992).

Immunological disorder

Some studies have noted disorders of immune competence reporting altered levels of IgG or IgE, though this is not confirmed in other studies. Snuffles, colds, and other infections are commonly reported during the last week of life before a SIDS occurrence, suggesting a mild immune incompetence. Laboratory studies have confirmed that even short term exposure to ELF EM fields inhibits lymphocyte cytotoxicity by upto 40 percent. Other studies (Wertheimer & Leeper, 1979; Feychting and Ahlbom, 1992) have confirmed that increased incidence of childhood leukaemia incidence is associated with proximity to important sources of EM fields. If such fields have serious adverse health effects on children it would be consistent to suggest that infants are even more badly affected. The peak age of death in SIDs is 12.6 weeks, the time when fetal haemoglobin is being replaced by the infant's own haemoglobin, and assuming independent immunological status from the mother.

Time to Remember: Cell Phone Companies Patent Cancer Shields

The world's largest mobile telephone manufacturers have been patenting devices to reduce the risk of brain tumors among users while rejecting claims of any health hazards.

Engineers for the "Big Three" - Nokia, Ericsson and Motorola - have all invented new components to shield users from radiation emissions from the handsets.

One application that Nokia has lodged with the United States Patent Office in Washington, and which has been seen by The Times, notes that "it has been suggested that" continuous exposure to radio frequency irradiation could lead "to a development of malignant tumor".

The patents show that the manufacturers have been working on radiation-reducing components for at least eight years. The companies maintain that there is no contradiction between their public stance and the existence of the patents.

Scientific opinion is divided. The most recent large-scale study found no links between such phones and cancers, although other studies suggest that there may be health risks.

However, the discovery that manufacturers have apparently "hedged their bets" by applying for patents on irradiation-reducing components has alarmed consumers' groups and some scientists.

The patents are now to be used in evidence in a series of US lawsuits launched this year against businesses including the British market leader Vodafone. Some 25 US patents were unearthed by Carl Hilliard, of the Wireless Consumer Alliance, last month.

Alasdair Philips, of the British consumer watchdog Powerwatch, said: "This is confirmation that the phone companies take the possibility of health problems far more seriously than they say in public."

The patents also alarmed Dr Alan Preece, a medical physicist at Bristol University, who demonstrated in a government-funded study two years ago that mobile-phone radiation affected brain activity in ways unconnected with its heating properties.

He said: "I think they are hedging their bets by doing this so that if the evidence does emerge, they have products up their sleeves."

Christopher Newman, a 42-year-old neurologist, is bringing a £500 million lawsuit against companies including Motorola and Verizon Communications at the US federal court in Baltimore, claiming they are responsible for his malignant brain tumour. Verizon is a joint venture between America's Bell Atlantic and Vodafone, the UK's most popular network with over 12 million of the 40 million mobile users.

Mr Newman's lawyer has also recently filed class actions in five states, again naming Verizon and Motorola and others such as Nokia and Ericsson. These seek unspecified punitive damages, money to reimburse people who bought mobile headsets to reduce exposure and free protective headsets for all mobile users.

Cases have been filed on behalf of four more tumour victims. One, Michael Murray, used to test mobiles for Motorola and claims his work caused his two brain tumors.

Thompsons, Britain's biggest personal-injury law firm, has on its books 30 phone users who claim to be suffering a range of health problems.Tom Jones, a partner, said: "Any judgment showing liability in the States would strongly affect the likelihood of successful claims here."

Manufacturers denied that the patents meant that they accepted the existence of hazards. Michael Westmark, Ericsson spokesman on health, said: "Given the available scientific evidence, there is no link between mobile use and negative health effects" - a view also expressed by Norman Sandler of Motorola.

William Plummer, Nokia vice president said: "There is no contradiction here. The patents talk of 'suggestions' of health risks. A third of our employees are engaged in research and development and it is a natural course of business that they then file for patents."

Öffentlicher Informationsabend im Gemeindesaal Triesen am Donnerstag, 1. Februar.

Der praktische Arzt Dr. med. Reinhold Jandrisovits aus Müllendorf (Österreich) berichtet als selbst betroffener Arzt am kommenden Donnerstag, 1. Februar, im Triesner Gemeindesaal von seinen Erfahrungen. Er erhärtet weiter den Verdacht, dass Mobilfunk krank macht. Jedermann ist zum Besuch der öffentlichen Veranstaltung herzlich eingeladen.

Schlafstörungen nehmen zu

Dr. med. Jandrisovits betreut die burgenländische Gemeinde Müllendorf, eine Gemeinde mit 1200 Einwohnern südöstlich von Wien. Als Hausarzt hat er rund 90 Prozent der Bürger in seiner Kartei und kennt deshalb die Krankheitsverläufe sehr gut. Bereits beim Mobilfunksymposium im Bamberg (Januar 2005) und beim vierten Mobilfunkkongress in Olten (November 2006) stellte er seine Untersuchungsergebnisse vor. In der Zeit von 2000 bis 2001 wurden in Müllendorf Mobilfunksender installiert. Ab 2002 verzeichnete der Mediziner eine Zunahme zunächst nicht erklärbarer Beschwerden wie Schlafstörungen, Ruhelosigkeit, Anspannung, Erschöpfungszustände, Wortfindungsprobleme, Bluthochdruck und erhöhten Puls. Die Anzahl der Patienten mit Schlafstörungen nahm ab 2001 deutlich zu. Auch er selbst war schliesslich betroffen. Erst im Laufe der letzten Jahre brachte jedoch Dr. Jandrisovits die Beschwerden der Einwohner mit den Mobilfunksendern im Ort in Zusammenhang. Was Dr. Jandrisovits anhand seiner Studien herausfand, wird am 1. Februar in Triesen den Interessierten vorgestellt.

Programm des Informationsabends in Triesen:

• 19.30 Uhr: Begrüssung; Präsentation des VGM-Mobilfunkfilmes «Die Glocken von Sankt Mamerta»

• 20.15 Uhr: Referat Dr. med. Reinhold Jandrisovits, anschliessend Fragemöglichkeiten

• 21.15 Uhr: Präsentation des Filmes «Der Handykrieg»

• 22 Uhr: Treffen der interessierten Ärzte mit Dr. Jandrisovits zum Erfahrungsaustausch.

Informationsabende

Bis Mitte März läuft in Liechtenstein noch das Vernehmlassungsverfahren betreffend das neue Umweltschutzgesetz. Dieses Gesetz soll unter anderem die rechtliche Grundlage dafür werden, wie hierzulande in Zukunft mit gesundheitsschädigender Strahlenbelastung umgegangen wird. Alle in die Vernehmlassung einbezogenen Personen und Organisationen sind eingeladen, sich beim Informationsabend in Triesen über die Gefahren der Mobilfunkstrahlung zu informieren.

Der VGM wird zudem in der Zeit vom 2. Februar bis zum 15. Februar die beiden Mobilfunkfilme in allen elf Liechtensteiner Gemeinden zeigen und die Verantwortlichen in den Gemeinden, die Gemeindevorsteher, die neuen Gemeinderäte und die Bevölkerung über die Ernsthaftigkeit des sich dramatisch verschlechternden Gesundheitszustandes der Bevölkerung informieren.

Wer aus berufenem Mund persönlich hören möchte, was Dr. Jandrisovits zum Thema Mobilfunkantennen zu sagen hat, sollte die Gelegenheit am 1. Februar in Triesen nützen, denn Dr. Jandrisovits steht leider nur an diesem einen Abend zur Verfügung.
