Dear Olle and Roger: This link should open page re "News.Telegraph" article published 5-1-06. A date in 2002 is shown as submitted -- I don't know whether publication was held-up since 2002 but will try contacting the paper. I do not recall ever having seen that much detail re Studholme boy who slept close to electric meter but do know about the case.

I have a case file re another boy's Leukaemia death in Sylvania Waters, Australia. Jacinta Sunderland had submitted a brief post at the time (Australian website) saying she thought electric meter was the cause of her son's death. She gave me permission to use the information to help in whatever way I choose.

As you know, Bonnie Boyum, whose son died from Leukaemia about six years ago, has given me permission to share information that Michael Boyum was sleeping close to an electric clock and small fan (headboard of bed).

We have proof that our two grandsons, diagnosed with rare immune deficiencies, improved significantly after moving their beds away from walls opposite electric meters. We had been told they may develop Leukaemia, Lymphoma or other cancers.

I also have lab results identifying pre-Leukaemic blood changes in guinea pigs when their cage was placed against "powerwall" in my home (wall opposite electric meter). I also have results showing "improvement" in white blood counts after moving the survivors away from electric meter.

Dr. Andrew Marino conducted similar guinea pig study at Louisiana State University. Dr. Duane Dahlberg's "Minnesota Herd Study" reported pre-Leukemic blood changes in cows.

Last night, I read in the book "Melatonin Miracle," a quote by Dr. Russell Reiter that indicated Dr. Reiter suspects ".....pulsed EMF's from appliances....[not verbatim] ...as being more likely to cause Leukaemia than powerlines.

I saw a news report this morning about a fellow in England (a "Mr. Scott") who was dubbed "Marathon Man." He wore the suit while walking/dragging himself for 8 days until arriving at Buckingham Palace. He was raising money for Leukaemia -- something like $3 mil American.

I don't know whether the money was raised for purpose of research which is necessary, of course. Considering the release today, May 1, 2006, of the article re property devaluation due to powerlines and Leukaemia concerns, and the facts as summarized above, it is obvious there is "urgent need" for studies to confirm development of Leukaemia in persons (not just children as evidenced by Michael Boyum's death at age 23) who are sleeping too close to electric meters as well as electric clocks, power supply boxes for cordless phones and more!!!

By copy of this email, I am therefore making "another appeal" to the Charity, "Children With Leukaemia" for immediate public service announcements recommending precaution re bedside electrical items!!!

I believe you, Olle, submitted request to Children With Leukaemia for funding? I have also made appeals for funding you for purpose of replicating the studies re grandchildren and guinea pigs but since I am not qualified according to the Children With Leukaemia's requirements for requests for funding, I had hoped the Charity would see the importance of being a bit creative insofar as providing funding for my "nonexpert request."

I know you have attempted to have warnings placed on appliances, Roger. This may be a good time to renew those efforts. Public service announcements by Children With Leukaemia may provide the necessary help? Take care - Joanne

New evidence links power lines and cancer
By Andrew Alderson, Chief Reporter

(Filed: 06/10/2002)

Overhead power lines and household electrical appliances increase the risk of developing cancer, according to the findings of an eight-year study into the effects of electromagnetic fields (EMFs).

The £4.5 million study, the largest held into the effects of EMFs on health, suggests that hundreds of thousands of Britons, particularly children, are at risk from life-threatening illnesses linked to the emissions. Pregnant women are also at greater risk of miscarrying.

Its findings will be seized on by campaigners who argue that EMFs from overhead power lines and mobile phone masts are responsible for cancer and leukaemia "clusters" across Britain.

The National Radiological Protection Board, the Government watchdog on radiation, reported last year that its studies into the effect of EMFs had been inconclusive.

The latest study was commissioned by the California Public Utilities Commission, which is expected to publish the full report in the next few months. Scientists reviewed scores of previous studies from all over the world, including Britain, and carried out new research in the San Francisco area.

The researchers told The Telegraph that they believe that EMFs increase the risks of life-threatening illnesses including childhood leukaemia, adult brain cancer and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a degenerative disease that attacks nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.

Dr Raymond Neutra of the California Department of Health Services, who led the research, said: "In Britain, hundreds of thousands of homes are exposed to levels [of EMFs] that mean they could be at risk."

Dr Vincent DelPizzo, a senior member of the research team, said: "People have a right to be warned but whether a major effort to reduce EMFs is appropriate must still be decided."

The first suspected link between overhead power lines and cancer was made in America in 1979. Some reports, however, have dismissed a connection, while others have said that evidence is inconclusive. Until now, those considering long and costly legal action have been advised that it would probably fail because of lack of proof.

John Scott, the Conservative MSP for Ayr who led an unsuccessful campaign to stop the erection of more than 200 pylons in South Ayrshire, said yesterday: "The implications of this [study] could be enormous for the power-generating companies."

If the report bolsters demands for the burying of all power cables, the cost will run into billions of pounds. A spokesman for the Electricity Association said: "If the Government ever decreed that power lines had to be placed underground then the costs would be passed straight on to the consumer."

Every mile of underground cabling costs nearly £16 million to install, whereas overhead cables cost about £800,000 over the same distance.

The power companies could face a string of lawsuits from families who claim to have been affected by EMFs, as could manufacturers of domestic appliances.

Martyn Day, a solicitor representing a dozen families who are considering legal action against power companies they claim were negligent, said: "The evidence has been accumulating over the past 23 years and this sounds a very significant piece of additional information."

Among those who claim to have been affected are Ray and Denise Studholme, who believe that their son Simon would still be alive if he had not been subjected to a strong electromagnetic field in his bedroom.

As Simon slept, his head was less than 3ft from an electricity meter and a burglar alarm in a hall cupboard. According to the family, tests after their son's death revealed that the two appliances gave off an EMF more than six times the recommended safe limit.

Simon was diagnosed with leukaemia in November 1990, nearly two years after the family moved to their three-bedroom home near Bolton, Greater Manchester. He died in September 1992, aged 13.

The family hopes to use the study's findings to resume a test case against Norweb, their electricity supplier. They dropped a civil case five years ago after losing their right to legal aid.

"We faced an uphill battle all the way to win compensation," said Mr Studholme, 54, who has retired from his job as a financial adviser because of his poor health.

"If I had known about the electromagnetic fields Simon would not have been sleeping there. Within six months of moving here he used to get up in the morning complaining of headaches and feeling light-headed," said Mr Studholme.

In America up to five per cent of homes have EMF levels considered potentially dangerous. It is estimated that the same percentage of homes in Britain could be at risk, either because of nearby power lines, internal wiring or electrical equipment.

Dr Michael Clark, the scientific spokesman for the National Radiological Protection Board, said yesterday that the board welcomed new research into the effect of EMFs but would not comment on the findings from California until it had studied the full report.

Roger Coghill, who runs an independent science laboratory in Pontypool, Gwent, and who has studied the effect of EMFs on people's health for more than a decade, said that he was impressed by the latest research project.

"This is a huge, well-conducted study and people must pay attention to its results. Some power companies have deliberately suppressed research in this field. But in the end the truth will out and here it is.

"We are all on the same side: we all want electricity but none of us wants brain tumours."

Exactly how cancer could be caused by such exposure remains a mystery, however. The strength of the magnetic fields falls away rapidly from overhead power lines - just a few dozen yards from a pylon registers well below the natural magnetic field level of the Earth. Studies of living cells and animals exposed to such weak fields have hitherto failed to reveal any changes normally linked to cancer.

Pylon cancer fears put £7bn blight on house prices

By Nic Fleming,
Medical Correspondent
(Filed: 29/04/2006)

Up to £7 billion will be wiped off property values if the Government accepts the advice of experts that homes should no longer be built near overhead power lines because of possible links with childhood leukaemia.

About 130,000 houses could lose between 10 per cent and a quarter of their re-sale price if ministers take the advice of a committee set up by the Department of Health. Pylons Research continues into whether pylons are responsible for increased cases of leukaemia

A draft of a report by the committee, seen by The Daily Telegraph, states that building houses within 230ft of high voltage power lines and 115ft of lower voltage lines should be banned.

The confidential document, written by John Swanson, the scientific adviser to the National Grid, considers the option of compulsorily buying all 75,000 homes in England and Wales that are affected.

But a more recent paper, written last month, sets out the group's preferred option - an end to the building of houses near overhead lines and a ban on new power lines being built near existing homes.

The draft report acknowledges that implementing this as a policy could wipe a quarter off the value of 25,000 homes within 230ft of 400kv and 275kv overhead transmission lines and some 10 per cent from the value of 55,000 houses within 460ft of them.

It also admits there could be a reduction of 15 per cent in the value of 50,000 homes within 100ft of the lower voltage 132kv power lines.

The documents are the work of the Stakeholder Advisory Group on Extremely Low Frequency Electromagentic Fields (Sage). This committee was set up by the DoH in October 2004 following the publication of a report by Dr Gerald Draper, of the Oxford childhood cancer research group.

Dr Draper suggested that children under 15 living near high voltage power lines could have a 69 per cent increased risk of getting leukaemia.

Some scientists pointed out that while the research found a statistical association, it did not establish a causal link and they rejected the findings.

Sage includes representatives of the DoH, the National Grid, the Health Protection Agency, the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and the Council of Mortgage Lenders.

Academics from the University of Bristol and Nottingham Trent University are also members, as well as a number of campaigners from groups committed to highlighting what they believe are the potential dangers of electromagnetic fields.

Nicholas Ashe, of Property Vision, a leading firm of country house and estate buying agents, said the potential loss of value to properties could be even greater than Sage's working group predicts.

He said: "The higher the value of the house, the greater the impact. We are talking about reductions of up to 50 per cent.

"For the kind of country house we find for clients, the majority of the market would be wiped out and properties could become almost unsaleable.

"It would have the same affect as building a road nearby or the property being under a new flight path."

The draft Sage report, dated last November, acknowledges that power lines already have an impact on property values, with a home in a rural location within 165ft of a National Grid transmission line losing 15 per cent of its value.

It considers potential policy options if the Government were to decide that no one should be allowed to live within 230ft of power lines.

These include the compulsory purchase and demolition of all houses near the lines.

"This section considers the more modest policy of applying this prospectively, ie stopping any new homes from being built near power lines but not doing anything directly with existing homes.

"However one possible consequence of this prospective-only policy is that it nonetheless causes devaluation of existing properties."

The report lists four scenarios for the loss of value caused by the Government adopting Sage's preliminary advice. This amounts to between £3 billion and £7 billion.

The report will be presented to the Government in June along with another report on new advice on electrical wiring within the home.

It states that whether home and landowners could claim compensation from electricity companies will depend partly on the contractual arrangements between the parties, and whether the Government introduces compulsory or voluntary measures.

Whatever happens, it seems likely that the overall costs will ultimately be borne by consumers.

A spokesman for the National Grid said: "We are not going to disclose any details until the firm conclusions of the group are published this summer."

Electromagnetic radiation from the powerlines or the transformers in Mission Hospital may have caused a great amount of cancer in the hospital

Robert has discovered some very significant evidence that seems to indicate that electromagnetic radiation from the powerlines or the transformers in Mission Hospital may have caused a great amount of cancer in the hospital. If this information is correct, a public inquiry is needed!

Hi Martin I live in Mission BC aprox 50 miles east of Vancouver. It has been reported that 32 hospital staff contracted cancer over the passed few years. Most are those that worked in the west wing of the hospital and lab area. In my investigating I found that the high voltage powerlines run underground into the hospital basement close to or under the lab area. This means there are transformers in the basement near or under the lab and west wing area. The staff would be working about four feet above these transformers. This needs investigaion. Any ideas of how we could get Wendy Mesley involved?

Epidemioloical studies re 1,000 children with Leukemia and magnetic field exposures in bedroom "conclusive"

Childhood Leukemia....more evidence "CONCLUSIVE..."

YALE DOCTORS -- TESTIMONY RE CHILDHOOD LEUKEMIA AND POWERLINES....2005, 36 pages....

THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT INFO -- opinions expressed that info re childhood Leukemia is CONCLUSIVE and this was before the new release of the Japanese epidemioloical studies re 1,000 children with Leukemia and magnetic field exposures in bedroom as being "conclusive...."

The Yale doctors refer to information out of California which is also highly significant. All of this combined with many other studies including Dr. Sam Milham's very important epidemiological work and more make it obvious that government and industry -- including WHO's Repacholi, do not care one bit about immeasurable suffering of innocent children and their families not only in regard to Leukemia but also to every single health problem there is from poor sleep to cancer in children as well as adults!!!!

NOW, where is the media!!!???!!! Take care - Joanne

Abstract
Residential power-frequency magnetic fields (MFs) were labeled as a possible human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer panel. In response to great public concern, the World Health Organization urged that further epidemiologic studies be conducted in high-exposure areas such as Japan. We conducted a population-based case-control study, which covered areas inhabited by 54% of Japanese children. We analyzed 312 case children (0-15 years old) newly diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) or acute myelocytic leukemia (AML) in 1999-2001 (2.3 years) and 603 controls matched for gender, age and residential area. Weekly mean MF level was determined for the child's bedroom. MF measurements in each set of a case and controls were carried out as closely in time as possible to control for seasonal variation. We evaluated the association using conditional logistic regression models. The odds ratios for children whose bedrooms had MF levels of 0.4 T or higher compared with the reference category (MF levels below 0.1 T) was 2.6 (95% CI = 0.76-8.6) for AML + ALL and 4.7 (1.15-19.0) for ALL only. Controlling for some possible confounding factors did not alter the results appreciably. Even an analysis in which selection bias was maximized did not fully explain the association. Most of the leukemia cases in the highest exposure category had MF levels far above 0.4 T. Our results provided additional evidence that high MF exposure was associated with a higher risk of childhood leukemia, particularly of ALL. © 2006 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

TRAHVOL: hopeful powerline fears heard

Daniel Pi photo

Cecil Dunn, chair of TRAHVOL, speaks about the powerline project during the BCUC town hall meeting Saturday at South Delta Secondary.

By Philip Raphael
South Delta Leader
praphael@southdeltaleader Jan 20 2006

They came. They listened. But did it do any good? “We hope it did,” said Cecil Dunn, chair of TRAHVOL (Tsawwassen Residents Against High Voltage Overhead Lines), referring to Saturday’s (Jan. 14) town hall meeting hosted by the B.C. Utilities Commission. The topic of discussion was the plan to upgrade powerlines that run along a 50-year-old BC Hydro right-of-way that cuts through parts of residential Tsawwassen. The residents fear the health affects of the current lines and oppose changes that could see more powerful lines buried along the route which delivers electricity to consumers on Vancouver Island via an undersea cable from Tsawwassen Beach. Around 50 people, mostly local homeowners who have the lines running through their backyards, got up to address three members of the utilities commission who presided over the meeting held at South Delta Secondary. Many residents made impassioned pleas to abandon the proposal made by the B.C. Transmission Corporation to use the existing right-of-way. Some had their young children by their side as they spoke. Others fought back the tears as they related the illnesses they fear were the result of living near the lines which give off electromagnetic fields (EMF) that some critics believe is linked to incidences of cancer. “It’s hard to believe that someone could not be moved by what people were saying,” Dunn said, adding the three commissioners present remained stone-faced throughout the proceedings. “They certainly were aloof. But there appeared to be plenty note-taking,” Dunn said. “And I suppose that’s better than them sitting there staring at the ceiling.” Dunn said he has been told that in the past similar town hall meetings have not had an appreciative affect on the commission’s final decision. But he remains optimistic the commissioners got the overriding message that high voltage lines are not welcome through residential Tsawwassen. “If it risks the health of just one child, that’s one child too many for the sake of some powerlines,” Dunn said. Also optimistic was fellow TRAHVOL member Maureen Broadfoot who said she felt the town hall meeting sent a “strong message that a route through this area is not workable for this community.” At Saturday’s town hall meeting, Tsawwassen resident Doug Adams made a tearful public apology to his wife and four children, who joined him on the stage, for deciding to live in their current home which has powerlines crossing their backyard. The family moved to South Delta three and a half years ago from Maple Ridge and Adams said his children are constantly exposed to the EMF from the lines. With his voice breaking, Adams said they play under the lines in their backyard, walk to school under the lines, and he even kisses them good night with the fear of being under the powerlines. “I want to publicly apologize to my family for putting them through this and try to make things right and better,” Adams said, and then pleaded for the commission’s understanding and compassion when it comes to deciding on the route. Other speakers were also concerned about the damage that would result from putting the lines underground Shannon Lane resident Glen Page said he doesn’t dispute the need to provide power to Vancouver Island residents, but opting to use the existing right-of-way would cut a path of destruction through his neighbourhood. He added that the $36,000 estimate he received from a professional landscaping firm to restore his property if a cable was buried in his backyard far exceeds the $5,000 BCTC has estimated. Page’s wife Mimi, an avid gardener, added that it takes many years for a garden to mature and attain character like the one she enjoys. “And I don’t think I have enough time left to see that again.” Agnes Jackson, a 25-year Tsawwassen resident was more blunt. “One sick child is one too many,” she told he commission panel. Joedi Timmins said she and her husband moved to Tsawwassen from Campbell River because they felt it was the ideal place in the Lower Mainland to raise their two young daughters. And a home with a large backyard was perfect for that. “Ironically, that one thing has now become our gravest concern,” she said, adding “Please remember that your decision is irreversible.” Public hearings on the powerline project are set to commence Feb. 6 in downtown Vancouver. A lengthy list of interveners, including several residents, have signed up to participate in the process. In addition to BCTC’s proposal for the route, a second option from wind farm company Sea Breeze Pacific will be considered. That firm is advocating an underground cable that would bypass Tsawwassen and run from North Surrey to White Rock then by undersea cable to Vancouver Island. A decision on which route will chosen is expected sometime this spring.

POWER lines plan worries residents

Southern New Castle County community asks, 'How safe is this?'

The News Journal/WILLIAM BRETZGER

George Kilbride of Wheatland questions the safety of power lines Delmarva Power may put near his development at a community meeting Thursday.

ABOUT EMF

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences defines electric and magnetic fields (EMF) as invisible lines of force that surround any electrical device, including power lines, wiring, and electrical equipment. Magnetic fields are measured in gauss (G) or milligauss (mG).

The International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection's guideline for the public's exposure to magnetic fields is 833 mG.

According to Delmarva Power's EMF models, magnetic field exposure on the south side of Wheatland could increase from 0.7 mG to 3.9 mG with the new lines. The west side of the subdivision could go from 21 mG to 25 mG. The projections are calculations based on a peak 2008 summer load.

By ALISON KEPNER The News Journal
01/21/2006

MIDDLETOWN -- George Kilbride has a 6-year-old grandson, so if power lines planned near his Wheatland home could put the boy at risk of developing childhood leukemia, he wants to know.

"We asked for someone to come out here and make sure our kids aren't going to get sick," he told Delmarva Power officials at a neighborhood meeting Thursday. "All we are asking is: 'How safe is this?' "

Fears, anxiety and emotions have escalated in southern New Castle County since residents in the Wheatland and Villages at Fairview Farm neighborhoods learned about Delmarva's plans to run 138,000-volt lines behind their homes.

The proposed lines are part of an 8-mile transmission link needed to provide electricity to the growing area south of the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal.

The lines would be on poles about 300 feet apart on a 60-foot right of way through the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal Wildlife Area, which is owned by the Army Corps of Engineers.

Many residents have done their own research, finding dozens of articles and studies claiming exposure to electric and magnetic fields (EMF) from the power lines could increase the risk of cancer, seizures and other health problems.

They also found papers disputing those claims and concluding that despite two decades of research, no study has found a credible link.

No definitive link has been found in years of research, but the scientific community is divided about whether more research is needed.

Kilbridge and some residents of the two subdivisions want answers from power officials. Others want the lines moved, whether or not health threats have been confirmed.

"I don't want to have my little sister put at an extra risk," said Meagan Hanifee, 19, whose Wheatland home is near two existing lines.

Mother Stacey Hanifee said they already have a history of cancer in the family.

"Why increase the risk of potential harm by having these things in my yard?" she asked. "I'm deathly afraid."

Most government agencies, medical societies and health experts don't think the studies that claim an EMF-cancer link definitively proved anything.

According to the American Cancer Society, studies of electric utility workers showed a minimal increase in the risk of brain tumors and leukemia. But the increase may have been due to chance. Studies have not been conclusive, the society said.

An eight-year, $4.5 million study by the National Cancer Institute found no association between electric power lines and childhood leukemia. The study was published in July 1997 in the New England Journal of Medicine.

In an editorial accompanying the study, Dr. Edward Campion called for an end to wasteful spending on EMF research. He wrote, "The many inconclusive and inconsistent studies have generated worry and fear and have given peace to no one."

Yet, some experts advocate for more research. The studies suggest something might be there, they argue.

Dr. David Carpenter is director of the Institute for Health and the Environment at the State University of New York at Albany.

"I think they are pretty conclusive to childhood cancer," he said. "Nobody has been able to determine the mechanism by which these very low fields cause cancer."

From a public health standpoint, "I am more concerned about the evidence that there is a relationship between exposure and cancer than necessarily understanding totally what the mechanism may be," Carpenter said.

Others believe more research will conclude what previous studies found: there is no link.

"The problem that I would have is that it is very hard to prove a universal negative," said John W. Farley, a physics professor at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. "What you can prove is that the preponderance of studies have not found a real effect."

Farley, author of the paper "Power Lines and Cancer: Nothing to Fear," believes the health scare is perpetuated by researchers who want to keep their jobs.

'We need more information'

So if there is no real risk, why has the debate continued for more than 20 years?

"People don't believe the experts," Farley said, citing the tobacco industry representatives who testified for years about the safety of smoking.

"People have been burned enough by experts who have a stake in it," said Farley, who said he has never been employed by the electric power industry or by its research organization, EPRI.

But those who believe there is a possible EMF-cancer link think caution is warranted.

"I am not an advocate of generating panic," Carpenter said, but "it's stupid for people to be oblivious to issues like these where there almost certainly is increased risk.

"We need more information," he said.

Delmarva officials are considering altering the route slightly to move the poles farther away from the neighborhoods. Company managers hope to make a decision by the end of the month.

I would appreciate your comment -if possible- a rebuttal if you see some grounds for a rebuttal.

The BC Utilities Commission (BCUC) has not allowed any experts’ participant assistant funding, normally available. Therefore we people have no qualified defense available. BCUC decides court-like: decision is made on evidence provided from either side.

We people are not given the opportunities like power companies: contracting one of the best industry consulting company (Exponent/New York), all paid not by Fortis or Fortis shareholders, but by us, the people, the very electricity rate payers! We, as ratepayers, who pay for everything what bears the “Fortis” name (generation plants, transmission/distribution lines, substations, buildings, equipmemnts, ….screwdrivers….Fortis employees’ and CEO’s wages…..at the same time we don’t get a penny for hiring experts of or choice and for our defense.

For the second time I will ask BCUC to allow us experts / participant funding, as well as a postponement of the on Jan 21. set oral hearing until after another major 230 kV TL hearing in Vancouver which starts Feb. 6 and will last about 4-5 weeks.

Please distribute to other fellow independent experts for their information.

Thank you,

Hans.
