A civic group urged the government yesterday to take action to dissuade children and teenagers from using mobile phones because of health concerns.

The Taiwan Electromagnetic Radiation Hazard Protection and Control Association (TEPCA) presented results of a survey on child and teenager cellphone use, along with information about the levels of electromagnetic radiation produced by cellphones marketed in Taiwan.

Cellphone makers may face safety labelling changes

Cellphone manufacturers may soon be asked to clearly label the specific absorption rate (SAR) of phones as a guide to potential health risks, the National Communications Commission (NCC) said yesterday.

SAR measures electromagnetic exposure to the human body.

Tampa - Teresa Mosley is a busy mother of three who relies on her cell phone to keep up with her kids. But she knows she's not the only one her kids are talking to. "On weekends they use it a lot because they like to get with their friends. They have a social life."

But there's a question about how much cell phone use is safe for children and whether or not the electromagnetic radiation that cell phones put off could cause brain tumors. Dr. James Orlowski is the Chief of Pediatrics and Director of Pediatric Intensive Care at University Community Hospital located at 3100 East Fletcher Avenue in Tampa. He says research in Europe and Asia is still being conducted on the issue there's a reason to be cautious right now.

GARDAI have not carried out any investigation into a possible link between a radio mast erected on a Dublin station and the high instances of cancer in the immediate area.

Locals living near Ronans-town Garda Station were under the impression that senior gardai had ordered an inquiry into potential links between the masts and the fact that nine officers based there have suffered brain cancer.

Those who live around the antennas are suffering from various ailments. In a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood in Riverside, Calif., locals have been blaming the radiation from nearby antennas for headaches and problems sleeping. When more antennas were proposed at the same location, they sought outside help. They said they felt overwhelmed because there was so little time to defend themselves. They also said they did not speak English very well and did not know which arguments to use.

With the hearing only a few days away, they were advised to go to the hearing and speak from their hearts. Miraculously, the new antennas were denied. While this neighborhood prevailed, the wireless industry merely moved on to another neighborhood to reapply to place the antennas there, hoping that by offering some side benefits, the new neighborhood would be less resistant.

N Bord Pleanala has given the go-ahead to a mobile phone mast at the Burgery after overturning a decision by Waterford County Council.

The application by Vertical Property Holdings was refused by Waterford County Council in February.

The mast was refused on two main reasons, that it would impact on the visual amenity of the site and that other locations hadn't been properly investigated.
