History is a slaughterhouse - And war is how the slaughter is carried out

Not a Pretty Picture

"History," Hegel said, "is a slaughterhouse." And war is how the slaughter is carried out.

by Sydney H. Schanberg

If we believe that the present war in Iraq is just and necessary, why do we shrink from looking at the damage it wreaks? Why does the government that ordered the war and hails it as an instrument of good then ask us to respect those who died in the cause by not describing and depicting how they died?

Coming Home - An Iraq Correspondent Living in Two Worlds

by Dahr Jamail

I find myself, against my better judgment and everything I swore I wouldn't do, heading back to the Middle East; back to chronicle more of what's happening there. I keep wondering how long it can go on; how long so many people in my home country will continue to ignore it, to be complicit, whether they know it or not, in our brutal occupation -- so long after it was proven beyond a shadow of a shadow of a doubt that this war was illegal and based on nothing but lies.

U.S. Army Captain Convicted for 'Mock' Execution of Iraqi Civilian Prisoner

Iraq War Legacy: U.S. Army Captain Convicted for 'Mock' Execution of Iraqi Civilian Prisoner

A U.S. Army captain forced an Iraqi detainee to dig his own grave and then ordered troops to pretend to shoot the detainee in one of several mock executions described in investigative documents released Tuesday by the Army. Capt. Shawn L. Martin of the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment was convicted of aggravated assault and battery in a court-martial proceeding for the mock execution episode, an Army spokesman said. He was sentenced to 45 days' confinement and fined $12,000.

"Catastrophe" in Iraq

Under international law it is the primary responsibility of the occupier to safeguard the citizens of the country they occupy.

Dahr Jamail

There has been a low-grade civil war going on for quite some time-but now the veil has been ripped off by the statements made by Dhari. All Sunni mosques in Iraq will be closed for three days...an ominous symbol of things to come.
