Only the Dead Have Seen the End of War

Manuel Valenzuela

For war – that human weakness created by warmongering leaders that send to battle the mostly young, ignorant, easily manipulated, testosterone-filled members of the lower castes of any one tribe – unleashes in human beings a most vicious animal from the deepest reaches of our psyches. The primordial necessity to kill, the hunger to maim and rape, the desire to inflict pain and suffering is therefore reborn, free to act indiscriminately, away from the menacing glow of the rule of law and the watchful eye of humanity.

Does America's monopoly on virtue justifies any and all US actions?

Virtuous violence is upon us

by Paul Craig Roberts

LewRockwell.Com

[F]or Bush administration partisans, war crimes are no longer something of which to be ashamed. Reflecting the neoconservative mindset that America's monopoly on virtue justifies any and all US actions, Fox 'News' talking heads and their Republican Party and retired military guests have arrogantly defended the marine who murdered the wounded Iraqi prisoner. Iraqi insurgents are condemned for deaths that they inflict on civilians. But when American troops fire indiscriminately upon civilians and US missile and bombing attacks kill Iraqis in their homes, the deaths are dismissed as 'collateral damage.' This double standard is a further indication that Americans have come to the belief that US ends justify any means...

American imperialism is bad for America

Why we fight

by Justin Raimondo

AntiWar.Com

In the day-to-day business of tracking the War Party's machinations, it's easy to lose sight of the forest for the trees: Powell out, Condi in, AIPAC spies, Chalabi's lies, Bush and Kerry, Fallujah and Allawi. But what, exactly is the bottom line? It is this: American imperialism is bad for America. It undermines our republican (small-'r') institutions, it renders the effort to roll back Big Government futile, and it corrupts our character as a people. It also kills those it is supposed to be 'liberating' -- a moral conundrum that none of the advocates of America's 'benevolent hegemony' acknowledge, let alone have an answer to...

"We would destroy the city in order to save it"

VCS Weekly Update: Fighting in Iraq Intensifies

The fighting in Iraq intensified last week with the assault by U.S. and Iraqi forces on the insurgent stronghold in Falluja. At least 52 soldiers and Marines died in the fighting, plus an unknown number of Iraqi insurgents and civilians. During that time we, like the rest of the world, have watched and waited to see what the outcome of the attack would be, and whether, like the classic quote from Vietnam, we would "destroy the city in order to save it."

Media Repression in “Liberated” Land

by Dahr Jamail

Journalists are increasingly being detained and threatened by the U.S.-installed interim government in Iraq. Media have been stopped particularly from covering recent horrific events in Fallujah....

Guerillas won’t give up

US, Iraqi assessment say: Guerillas won’t give up:

The recapture of Fallujah has not broken the insurgents' will to fight and may not pay the big dividend U.S. planners had hoped - to improve security enough to hold national elections in Sunni Muslim areas of central Iraq, according to U.S. and Iraqi assessments.
