The American death sentence

by Ben Stein

The American Spectator

03/29/05

I wonder if a poll of Aryan Germans would have found a majority who cared enough to pull a lever to save the Jews. I suspect a good majority -- voting in total secrecy, of course -- would have said, 'Let them die. They're inferior and not worth providing food for.' So now we are at that level. But when Terri Schiavo is with her Maker let's be clear what happened: she was executed by the culture of death judiciary, the same ones who say no baby has a right to live until he's out of the womb by a few days -- and you can bet that's going to change so that babies who are less than perfect will soon be sentenced to death, too. She was executed, despite having committed no crime whatsoever, by t... in black robes who would not know a law if it were on their breakfast plate...

Santorum rethinks death penalty stance

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

03/22/05

A new poll showing that Catholics are backing off support for the death penalty was no surprise to U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum, an outspoken conservative Catholic, who says he has been re-examining his own view. He has not become an abolitionist, and he believes church teaching against the death penalty carries less weight than its longer-standing opposition to abortion. But he questions what he once unquestioningly supported. 'I felt very troubled about cases where someone may have been convicted wrongly. DNA evidence definitely should be used when possible,' he said. 'I agree with the pope that in the civilized world ... the application of the death penalty should be limited. I would definitely agree with that. I would certainly suggest there probably should be some further limits on what we use it for.' He spoke in a brief phone interview after the U.S. Catholic bishops launched a renewed push against the death penalty...

Catholic bishops renew anti-death penalty efforts

Uniontown Herald Standard

03/22/05

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops announced a new campaign against the death penalty Monday, saying they will step up lobbying and educational efforts, and buttressing their arguments with polls they commissioned that find support for executions has weakened among American parishioners. 'We cannot teach that killing is wrong by killing. We cannot defend life by taking life,' Cardinal Theodore McCarrick told a Washington news conference. ... The bishops also released surveys from last November and this month showing adult church members, once supportive of the death penalty, are now evenly divided on the issue...

Ending the death penalty for juveniles is not enough

by Ivan Eland

Independent Institute

03/07/05

Since 1990, the United States has been in the deplorable company of the few remaining nations -- Iran, China, Congo, Yemen, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia -- that still put young people to death for crimes. America, famous for the extent of its individual freedoms, should not be on any list with such despotic third world abusers of human rights. In fact, Justice Anthony Kennedy, who wrote the majority opinion for the court, noted the 'stark reality that the United States is the only country in the world that continues to give official sanction to the juvenile death penalty.' Yet why stop at ending the death penalty only for juveniles? The United States is also one of a small group of countries, many of which are severe abusers of human rights, that allow the death penalty to be used at all. The United States needs to exit this nefarious club, too...

STOP CHILD EXECUTIONS IN PAKISTAN

Pakistan banned the use of the death penalty against child offenders in most of the country in 2000, but scores of child offenders remain under sentence of death. In November 2001 Sher Ali was hanged for a murder committed in 1993 when he was 13 years old.
