The American Revolution has freed the people of the United States from the tyranny of the British Crown

A Free Nation Doesn't Do This, Nor Do Free People Allow It!

The concept of "government" in the United States, a/k/a United Socialist States of America, is skewed beyond belief, intruding into every aspect of our lives whether we realize it or not. In so doing, people are being trained more and more to ask "why doesn't the government do something?" The proper question to ask is, "why don't we do something?" and leave the government out of it.

Never did the founders of this nation envision a people of such dependence on government less than two hundred years after the American Revolution had freed them from the tyranny of the British Crown. Nor did our founders envision a people who would willingly sell themselves back into such tyranny by allowing government to grow to unprecedented size, with unprecedented expenditures (supposedly for the public good) and unprecedented power to intrude into the lives of the people at every stage from cradle to grave. Such a nation would have been unworthy of the investment they made in the future of freedom and the granting of liberty as the birthright of all Americans and the acquired right of all legally naturalized citizens.

(AFP)

Support Your Freedom to Read

Within the next few days, the House will face another watershed vote in the fight to keep us both Safe and Free.

As early as tomorrow, the House is likely to vote on an amendment to the annual appropriations bill for the Justice Department that would forbid the government from using any money to use the USA PATRIOT ACT to search your library and book-buying records without probable cause of crime.

Last year, the House stunned the Ashcroft Justice Department by overwhelmingly voting for an amendment that would repeal "sneak and peek" provisions of the Patriot Act. Unfortunately, the congressional leadership killed the amendment before it became law.

Act Now! This week, the House can send another important message to the Bush Administration, which is pushing hard to have the Patriot Act made permanent. Click below to read more about the freedom to read amendment and to send an email to your Member of Congress:

What's At Stake

Certain rights are supposed to be guaranteed in the United States, thanks to legislation like the Civil Rights Act of 1964. But recently, Supreme Court decisions have eroded parts of that act, including some workers' right to sue for employment discrimination; the right to bring discrimination cases to court; and a provision ensuring that older government workers have the same rights as those in private industry. Now, a bill called FAIRNESS: The Civil Rights Act of 2004 has been introduced in both the House and Senate to guarantee workers' access to courts for discrimination cases and enforce existing civil rights protections. Join Civilrights.org and tell your senators and representatives to co-sponsor or support FAIRNESS. ACT NOW:

Government Is Not “Us”

When Rumsfeld talks about “us,” he blurs a crucial distinction, most likely intentionally. But a moment’s thought is all it takes to see that we, the American people, are not the government and vice versa...

Bush's police state and Independence Day

Civil Liberties Watch

My client was arrested, cuffed, taken to jail, finger-printed, charged, released on bail, and faces trial. Depending on the judge and prosecutor, they may be little I can do. For technically, she violated the law. She 'interfered' with an officer in the line of duty -- which, now, the Supreme Court has recently told us, includes stopping any of us and inquiring about our identity, even if we are doing nothing wrong. Even though the charges against her friend were summarily dismissed by the judge, the charge against her stands. For the case against her does not depend on the valid arrest of her friend -- but on the fact that she attempted, so the officer has charged, to impede him while he was making an arrest. Under the law, that arrest can have been illegal, and my client still found guilty."...

About independence

New York Times

People too often get the impression that the only people who use the nation's civil liberties protections are lawbreakers who were not
quite guilty of the exact felony they were charged with. Perhaps we should thank the Bush administration for providing so many situations that demonstrate how an unfettered law enforcement system, even one pursuing worthy ends, can destroy the lives of the innocent out of hubris or carelessness.

... Virtually every time the Bush administration feels cornered, it falls back on the argument that the president and his officials are honorable men and women. ... But this nation was organized under a rule of law, not a dictatorship of the virtuous. The founding fathers wrote the Bill of Rights specifically because they did not believe that honorable men always do the right thing...
