Undo Global Warming: Don't Wait Until The Day After Tomorrow

Global Warming Campaign Update
Tuesday, May 25, 2004

Heard the buzz about "The Day After Tomorrow?" It's the new summer blockbuster movie depicting the disastrous impacts of global climate change. The good news is that the movie, opening Memorial Day weekend, is over-the-top science fiction. The bad news is that global warming is a scientific fact, and its impacts are happening now.

To separate fiction and fact, visit our new "The Day After Tomorrow" online action center at
http://actionnetwork.org/ct/5daYwHs1Ya6E/. There you can watch
a Public Service Announcement, sign the Emissions Petition, get
activism downloads, and more.

While the movie's global warming impacts are wildly exaggerated, its buzz may help motivate America's political leaders to wake up to global warming and support the McCain-Lieberman Climate Stewardship Act, the critical bill Congress is expected to vote on this summer to Undo Global Warming.

Turn Moviegoers into Petition Signers:
Let moviegoers know they can take action to Undo Global Warming by signing the Emissions Petition supporting the Climate Stewardship Act. Hand out Undo Global Warming flyers and petitions with a group of friends at your local theater showing "The Day After Tomorrow." Visit the movie action center to download and print out petitions and flyers.

Over 270,000 people have signed the Emissions Petition. And with "The Day After Tomorrow," we are spreading the message that global warming isn't just something happening in movie theatres. It's happening all around us, and will keep happening until we reduce greenhouse gas pollution.

Visit http://actionnetwork.org/ct/5daYwHs1Ya6E/ and have fun
at the movies.

ALERT : Demand the "Filthy Three" Act Against Climate Change

Encourage the U.S., Russia and Australia to Lead

By Forests.org, April 3, 2004

TAKE ACTION @ http://forests.org/action/climate/

Over past months there have been several studies that further irrefutably show that the Earth's climate is undergoing rapid and chaotic change as a result of human activities. CO2 levels are rising to such dangerous heights that a quarter of land species are expected to go extinct, the Great Barrier Reef and other important ecosystems are dying, changing ocean currents may trigger a mini ice age in Europe, and the U.S. military expects greater armed conflict caused by climate change. As the Earth burns, leaders of major industrialized countries dither. In particular, the United States, Russia and Australia have shamefully refused to support the Kyoto Treaty - the only international effort to address the issue.

Further, these countries have refused to take other measures such as introducing a carbon tax. Taxing carbon dioxide and other harmful emissions would provide substantial sums to undo the damage, compensate those most impacted, and allow for greater investments in renewable energy and ending deforestation. The Lincoln Plan at http://www.climateark.org/lincoln_plan/ is an example of such an approach. Please take a moment to encourage the "Filthy Three" - Bush, Putin and Howard - to live up to their responsibility to protect the Earth's climate.

TAKE ACTION @ http://forests.org/action/climate/

Please forward widely!

Internationale Ärzte zur Verhütung eines Atomkrieges : Unterschriftenaktion für Atomausstieg

Hallo liebe Leute,

Peter Borel

Protect Earth's Climate, 2nd Largest Rainforest and Wild Landscapes

Forest Conservation Action Alerts @ Forests.org
http://forests.org/action/

May 18, 2004

Three extremely urgent alerts:

** President Putin - Russia must ratify Kyoto now **
http://forests.org/action/climate/
Decision widely expected by end of week on treaty's future - will a decade of negotiations be wasted?

** Protect Montana's Rocky Mountain Front from Drilling **
http://forests.org/action/america/
One of the most important American wildernesses to be trashed by drilling. Do you have anything to say about this?

** Demand World Bank Stop Subsidizing Industrial Logging in the Congo **
http://forests.org/action/africa/
As country is in anarchy, World Bank auctions off the second largest
rainforest for logging. Will we stand for this?

Already responded? Do it again, and forward to at least a dozen or more people. There are ten thousand people on this email list. Though we have generated hundreds of thousands of protest emails, still only about 25% are responding to any particular alert. Frankly, we can do better. Let's vigorously respond to these alerts, grow the action alert list, and continue to wage a peaceful Earth Revolution.

ACTION ALERT! President Putin - Please Ratify Kyoto Now

Ask Russia to Initiate International Cooperation to Stop Climate Change

By Forests.org - May 2004

http://forests.org/action/climate/

President Putin will soon decide whether Russia will ratify the Kyoto Protocol. While far from perfect, the Kyoto Treaty represents hard fought and lengthy efforts by the international community to cooperatively address climate change. Kyoto represents an important first step towards establishment of a framework to limit emissions of greenhouse gases, which should and will be strengthened once in force. The issue has been pushed to the forefront as Russia now negotiates with Europe regarding European expansion and Russia's entry into the World Trade Organization, which the Europeans have linked to Kyoto ratification. Indications are the Russia's decision is imminent. Russia's decision regarding ratification of the Kyoto Treaty will determine whether international efforts to regulate greenhouse gas emissions commence. Climate change is not a theory - it is happening now - with impacts that continue to build in severity. Given President Bush and America's failure to lead, it is imperative that President Putin's Russia do so. Once Kyoto is in place, it is highly likely America will eventually ratify as well. Please ask that Russia immediately ratify the Kyoto Treaty.

Ukraine threatens Europe’s second largest wetland

Published by: Sarah Bladen, WWF International, 11/05/2004

The mighty Danube is under attack again

Thanks to your recent efforts, Austria's planned river works are moving in a better direction. But now a Ukrainian project threatens the Danube Delta, one of Europe's most ecologically important areas.
The Ukrainian government has started construction on a multi-million US-dollar shipping canal, which will cut right through the Danube Delta.

The Bystroye canal threatens critical habitats and jeopardizes the region's fishing and tourism industries.

Urge the Ukrainian President, Mr. Leonid Kuchma, to halt the canal construction, and to consider alternatives.

RAPID RESPONSE needed to save Dominican Republic parks

Published by: Sarah Bladen, WWF International, 13/05/2004

New law is bad news for Dominican protected areas

Ignoring objections from local citizens, businesses and scientists worldwide, the Congress of the Dominican Republic rushed ahead to pass a law that would eliminate or shrink the size of as many as 30 protected areas throughout the country. The law would also allow mining in the country's national parks.

The final decision now rests with the President of the Dominican Republic, Hipolito Mejia, who has the power to veto this destructive law. He is expected to make his decision before national elections, this Sunday, May 16.

You can help stop this destructive law NOW. Send an email to President Mejia and urge him to veto this destructive law.

Urge the wood giants to help stop illegal logging

Is the wood you buy o.k? Has it been cut responsibly or with disregard for the forest and its wildlife? You have a right to know. Ask the "wood giants" NOW and help stop illegal and destructive logging. Criminally and irresponsibly harvested timber lands in stores all around the world. You may unknowingly buy wood stripped from pristine and valuable forests.

Do companies know where the timber they buy and sell comes from, how it has been harvested, and how the forests have been managed? The lack of information is part of the problem, but you can help change this.

Appeal to "wood giants," like Bauhaus AG, show that you care and that you want their assurance that the wood you buy is o.k - because wood is good, but only if it comes from responsible sources.
