Orange to remove mobile mast from 'tower of doom', where cancer rate has soared

A mobile phone company is to remove a controversial mast from a block of flats dubbed the 'Tower of Doom', after seven residents were struck down by cancer.

Three residents have died and another four are battling the deadly disease since two masts were erected on the roof of the five-storey block.

Cancer rates on the top floor - where five of the eight flats have been struck, including the three deaths - is ten times the national average.

Here is one you might be interested in circulating, asking people to comment "an masse" as a couple of the readers letters are so stupid and impertinent and there is no compassion for the sick, suffering people in the "tower of doom".

I found a couple of the comments so "grosse" that I commented on them, and I guess the industry must be on weekend since my comment was allowed. But see for your self.

WLAN: Nicht nur reden, sondern handeln!

Durch die Antwort der Bundesregierung auf unsere Anfrage wird deutlich, dass die Bundesregierung durchaus Gründe zu Vorsicht bei der Nutzung von WLAN sieht. Doch es geht noch weiter.

Es geht um die Gesamtexposition

Es geht nicht nur um WLAN, sondern um alle hochfrequenten elektromagnetischen Felder, umgangssprachlich auch Elektrosmog genannt. Seit Jahren konzentriert sich die Diskussion auf die Mobilfunkmasten, andere Quellen, wie das eigene Handy, WLAN, Schnurlostelefone zu Hause oder im Büro oder aber neuere Technologien, wie der kommende digitale Polizeifunk oder das neu eingeführte digitale Fernsehen werden gerne vergessen. Diese unvollständige Aufzählung macht deutlich, es geht hier nicht um eine einzelne Technologien und deren Strahlenwerte, sondern es geht um die Betrachtung der Gesamtexposition durch alle diese Technologien. Auch wenn viele Nutzer dieser Technologien es nicht wahrhaben möchten: Es geht nicht mehr um die Frage ob diese elektromagnetische Strahlung potentiell eine Schädigung verursachen kann. Dieses ist schon lange bejaht. Deshalb hat die Bundesregierung entsprechende Grenzwerte in der 26. Bundes-Immissionsschutzverordnung festgelegt. Es geht auch nicht darum, diese Technologien abzuschaffen, sondern um die Fragen: Inwieweit können wir einen vorbeugenden Verbraucherschutz und diese interessanten neuen Technologien zusammenführen. Ziel ist es die Gesamtexposition eines jeden einzelnen so gering wie möglich zu halten. Auch WLAN darf nicht unterschätzt werden, unter bestimmten Umständen kann WLAN der dominierende Faktor sein. Zitat der Bundesregierung aus der Antwort: "Im beruflichen und privaten Umfeld eingesetzte WLAN- Netzwerke können aber die Expositionen anderer Funkdienste durchaus dominieren, wenn ein entsprechender Abstand zum Sender (Access Point oder Endgerät) unterschritten wird".

Wahlfreiheit stärken

Wichtig ist uns dabei auch die Wahlfreiheit für jeden einzelnen. Deshalb fordert die Bundestagsfraktion von Bündnis 90/Die Grünen, auch nach der Ablehnung unseres Antrages zur Kennzeichnung von Handys, die Bundesregierung auf, endlich Fortschritte bei der Kennzeichnung zu erzielen. Es kann nicht sein, dass immer der Blaue Engel für strahlungsarme Geräte wie ein Kreuz vorweg getragen wird, aber immer noch kein einziges Gerät diese Kennzeichnung bisher trägt. Auch wenn im Umweltbericht 2006 dieser Bundesregierung fälschlicherweise etwas anderes behauptet wird. Die Aussage der Bundesregierung auf unsere Anfrage, deckt sich mit den Aussagen des zuständigen Bundesamtes für Strahlenschutz. Dieses hatte auf einer Anhörung im bayrischen Landtag vor einigen Monaten entsprechend geantwortet. Diese führte dann zur Empfehlung des Landtages, in Schulen möglichst auf WLAN zu verzichten. Denn als informierter Bürger kann ich zu mindestens zu Hause selber entscheiden, ob ich durch WLAN meine persönliche Exposition erhöhen möchte. Schülerinnen und Schüler haben diese Entscheidungsfreiheit, wenn Schulen mit WLAN ausgestattet werden, nicht. Deshalb fordern wir auch die anderen Bundesländer auf, dem Vorbild Bayerns zu folgen.

Forschung muss fortgesetzt werden

Weiterhin ist für Bündnis 90/Die Grünen wichtig, dass die Erforschung der Auswirkungen der verschiedenen Immissionsquellen, wie sie im Deutschen Mobilfunk Forschungsprogramm geschehen sind, fortzusetzen. Leider hat die große Koalition diesen Antrag im Umweltausschuss am 04.07.07 gegen die Stimmen aller Oppositionsparteien abgelehnt. Inhalt waren eine Fortführung mit den Schwerpunkten Auswirkungen auf Kinder und Jugendliche und die Langzeitforschung. Genau diese Punkte benannt das Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz selber auf der Anhörung im bayrischen Landtag. Bundesregierung muss nun handeln Wir werden nach der Sommerpause einen Antrag in den Bundestag einbringen, der die Bundesregierung auffordert nicht nur zu reden, sondern selber zu handeln. Die Bundesregierung muss ein Maßnahmenpaket vorlegen. Dazu gehören auch eine aktive Informationspolitik, weiter Forschung, verständliche Kennzeichnung und Minimierungsmaßnahmen.

Wer aus Gründen des vorsorgenden Gesundheitsschutzes die Meidung von WLAN empfiehlt, gleichzeitig aber keine aktive Vorsorgepolitik betreibt macht sich unglaubwürdig.

An important contextual point to the recent story in the Washington Post about this American Cancer Society paper linked below is the back story to it. Without this context, the true story behind the American Cancer Society's vested interests can not be seen.

In 2002, shortly before this American Cancer Society study was launched, a high-ranking official from the American Cancer Society was a witnesses for the mobile phone industry in a highly visible legal proceeding in Baltimore, Maryland. The proceeding, a Daubert hearing to evaluate scientific evidence regarding the link between cell phones and cancer, was part of the lawsuit brought by Baltimore, Maryland neurosurgeon Dr. Christopher Newman. The testimony of the American Cancer Society scientist was used to unfairly and visciously discredit Dr. Neil Cherry and Dr. Henry Lai, two important witnesses for Dr. Newman. At the time, this was a critical legal proceeding for the mobile phone industry and the focal point of millions of dollars of legal fees paid on their behalf to 'keep the lid on' the cell phone cancer issue. This American Cancer Society study was launched shortly after the testiimony. It is noteworthy that the disclosures in the published paper do not show funding for the study coming from the industry. I personally believe as do others, that the industry made substantial contributions to the American Cancer Society to secure their testimony in the litigation. In a litigation proceeding, the industry would make sure to not pay the American Cancer Society staff person directly, so a payment 'under the table' had to be arranged. There would be no other reason for the American Cancer Society official to participate in the litigation: the American Cancer Society up to that point had not even looked into the cell phone cancer issue; they had done no work on it whatsoever. I know this from sources within the American Cancer Society.

The industry has systematically laundered support money to support their positions: for Mike Repacholi at the World Health Organization; through ICNIRP, the IEEE and other so-called independent groups; through various scientific labs around the world; through various bought scientists. In 2002, this type of money-based influence peddling was the modus operandi of the industry under the leadership of Tom Wheeler [ http://tinyurl.com/yvdmq9 ]and his cohorts. A brief read through Tom Wheeler's book addressing how business leaders can take home lessons from civil war generals reveals a chapter entitled, "If you can't win, change the rules": That is exactly the strategy that the industry put in place in those years and continues forward today. The rules are being changed by biasing the process that consumers should be able to trust.

Further evidence of this was seen two years ago. When renowned California attorney Johnnie Cochran died of a brain tumor that his surgeon, Dr. Keith Black from Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, and Johnnie's family believed was caused by his long-time heavy use of cell phones, CNN medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta covered it with a story that attempted to paint Johnnie's family and surgeon as emotional outliers. The industry did not even offer a spokesperson to appear on camera. Instead they offered a doctor from Emory University to say there was no link between brain cancer and cell phones -- a doctor with no history of any work on cell phones and cancer and who was part of the industry's litigation expert team coordinated through a law firm in Atlanta, Georgia where Emory University is located. Further, the industry submitted a written quote that was pasted on the screen: "The American Cancer Society has determined that cell phones and brain cancer is one of the top ten cancer myths".

The American Cancer Society for many years now, has been doing the bidding of the mobile phone industry. The question is why. The answer is money.

That the spokeman from the American Cancer Society saw the need to underscore the importance of their recent work by identifying themselves as one of the independent and reliable sources on the causes of cancer underscores the point that they are under much criticism for their biased bidding. This is but one more example. We can only hope that an informed public can see through this blatant manipulation.

The American Cancer Society is misleading the public

It stands out very clearly, that cancer charities are ignoring the links that show electrical pollution and electro magnetic radiation are causing cancer. Cancer societies are failing to promote cancer reduction based on known dangers and scientific research of electro magnetic radiation. They are doing nothing to warn cancer patients that they may be returning to further harm in their homes and workplaces, after undergoing medical treatments.

Cancer patients, more than any other group need to recover in an environment that is not polluted by electro magnetic radiation. Cancer societies are giving people to have a false sense of security. Because of this they are probably causing more cancer and harm than they do good.

A few months ago I went into a Canadian Cancer Society office and offered them scientific research that linked cancer with exposure to electro magnetic radiation. It was as if I had tried to pass on the plague, they did not want to look at it, touch it or have anything to do with it.

It may go a long way in showing why the cancer societies are being so irresponsible about the health dangers of EMR!
