Bill Maher, on the species-cide of the world's bees

The one truly great line: Speculating on cellphones and bee-deaths, Bill Maher said:

"It's nature's way of saying, "Can you hear me now?" "

- Mitchel Cohen

From Bill Maher:

Here's a quote from Albert Einstein: "if the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe, then man would have only four years of life left. No more bees, no more pollination, no more plants, no more animals, no more man."

Well, guess what? The bees are disappearing. In massive numbers. All around the world. And if you think I'm being alarmist and that, "Oh, they'll figure out some way to pollinate the plants..." No, they've tried. For a lot of what we eat, only bees work. And they're not working. They're gone. It's called Colony Collapse Disorder, when the hive's inhabitants suddenly disappear, and all that's left are a few queens and some immature workers -- like when a party winds down at Elton John's house. Also, if your stinger stays up more than 48 hours, call your doctor.

But I think we're the ones suffering from Colony Collapse Disorder. Because although nobody really knows for sure what's killing the bees, it's not al-Qaeda, and it's not God doing some of his Old Testament shtick, and it's not Winnie the Pooh. It's us.

It could be from pesticides, or genetically modified food, or global warming, or the high-fructose corn syrup we started to feed them. Recently it was discovered that bees won't fly near cell phones -- the electromagnetic signals they emit might screw up the bees navigation system, knocking them out of the sky. So thanks guy in line at Starbucks, you just killed us. It's nature's way of saying, "Can you hear me now?"

Last week I asked: If it solved global warming, would you give up the TV remote and go back to carting your fat ass over to the television set every time you wanted to change the channel. If that was the case in America, I think Americans would watch one channel forever. If it comes down to the cell phone vs. the bee, will we choose to literally blather ourselves to death? Will we continue to tell ourselves that we don't have to solve environmental problems -- we can just adapt: build sea walls instead of stopping the ice caps from melting. Don't save the creatures of the earth and oceans, just learn to eat the slime and jellyfish that nothing can kill, like Chinese restaurants are already doing.

Maybe you don't need to talk on your cell phone all the time. Maybe you don't' need a bag when you buy a keychain. Americans throw out 100 billion plastic bags a year, and they all take a thousand years to decompose. Your children's children's children's children will never know you but they'll know you once bought batteries at the 99 cent store because the bag will still be caught in the tree. Except there won't be trees. Sunday is Earth Day. Please educate someone about the birds and the bees, because without bees, humans become the canary in the coal mine, and we make bad canaries because we're already such sheep.

-- Bill Maher, host of HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher" (Fridays at 11:00PM)

Why are Niagara's bees dying?

Today's Toronto Star story about huge loses of bees in the Niagara region is attached.

Martin

Why are Niagara's bees dying?

TheStar.com - Business - Why are Niagara's bees dying? Experts called in to probe mysterious, costly threat to region's fruit industry April 17, 2007 dana flavelle business reporter

The sudden unexplained loss of millions of bees in the Niagara region – up to 90 per cent in some commercial colonies – has prompted Ontario beekeepers to ask experts at the University of Guelph to investigate.

The move comes amid the mysterious disappearance of millions of bees in the U.S., in a phenomenon so unusual that it has spawned a new phrase – "Colony Collapse Disorder."

In Canada, the problem seems to be confined so far to the Niagara region but is still early days for beekeepers in the West, who won't know the extent of the damage until they unwrap their hives later this month.

"About 80 or 90 per cent of the beekeepers in the Niagara region have had substantial losses," George Dubanow, president of the Niagara Beekeepers Association, said in an interview yesterday.

"This number is unparalleled. A typical winter loss is between 10 and 20 per cent."

That has some Niagara region fruit growers worried in the weeks leading up to the May pollination period because bees don't just make honey. They also play a vital role in pollinating everything from cherries to pear trees in Ontario, hybrid canola in Western Canada and blueberries in New Brunswick.

As much as a third of the food we eat requires bee pollination, according to experts. Bee pollination is valued at $1 billion in Canada.

Theories about why the bees are dying run the gamut from pesticides to poor weather and even radio waves from cell phone transmission towers.

Experts in Canada are reluctant to blame "Colony Collapse Disorder" for what's happened so far in Niagara.

"At this point we haven't seen the type of die-offs we're seeing in the U.S. although we're all certainly very concerned about it, said Steve Pernal, a research scientist with Agriculture and Agri-food Canada, in northern Alberta.

Officials in Ontario blame poor weather conditions last fall and the Varroa Destructor mite, a deadly parasite that first showed up in the early '90s.

"The reason I say that is you can almost draw a line from St. Thomas to the south side of Hamilton. Below that they've lost 70 per cent of their bees with some individuals losing 100 per cent. North of that line, thank goodness, the bees are quite normal," explained Doug McRory, an apiarist with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food.

Winter die-offs aren't unusual for beekeepers. And while 20 per cent is the average, sometimes an individual beekeeper's losses will be much higher, experts said.

However, the U.S. has now received reports from 24 states citing widespread losses. And more worrisome is the unexplained disappearance of the adult bees, a report to Congress two weeks ago stated.

It's as if the bees flew away and never came back, highly uncharacteristic behaviour, the report by U.S. agriculture analyst Renee Johnson said.

"The odds are some neurotoxin is what's causing it," said David VanderDussen, a beekeeper in Frankford, near Trenton, whose company NOD Apiary Products Ltd. recently won a provincial award for developing an environmentally friendly mite repellent.

Len Troup, a fruit grower in Jordan Station who also chairs the Ontario Tender Fruit Producers, says farmers in the area starting renting commercial bees to pollinate the cherry and pear crops, starting around mid-May.

Niagara beekeepers say the problem in the U.S. is driving up the price of Queen Bees imported from New Zealand to replenish the hives.

Protests block mast upgrade

By Craig Manning

PLACARD: Youngsters joined the residents' protest on Sunday

PROTESTERS have blocked attempts to upgrade a controversial phone mast sited in the tower of a Wirral church.

When engineers from telephone giant Orange turned up at Manor Church in Liscard early on Sunday morning to replace the 2G Antenna with an even stronger 3G mast they were met by a crowd of more than 40 nearby residents who blocked their path. Three hours later the workers left without being able to erect the mast.

Dr Tom Bolton from Manor Egremont Mast Action Group, who have been opposed to the mast since it was installed in 2005 organised Sunday's protest. He told the Globe: "We would like to thank our local police for their presence and the excellent way they conducted the policing of this peaceful protest.

"We were shocked by reports from attendees of increases of people who have suddenly become ill with cancers since the installation of the 2G hidden in the church tower and transmitting since early 2006."

The mast was built in October, 2005, but many nearby residents were unaware of the situation. Despite many meetings and a petition containing thousands of signatures Orange have refused to remove the mast.

"We were shocked by reports of increases of people who have suddenly become ill with cancers since the installation of the 2G hidden in the church tower."
Dr Tom Bolton

Dr Bolton added: "Orange say there is no proof that these masts cause ill health even though there are hundreds of scientists and experts worldwide now convinced that they are a hazard when placed in highly populated areas.

"Also there are many thousands of reports worldwide from people living close by these masts of increases in cancers and other life threatening diseases."

Conservative councillor Leah Fraser, who was among the protestors said: "If Orange, or any other mobile phone company, want to get one over us, they'll have to get up earlier. They have learned nothing from the last 18 months.

"Our peaceful protest outside the church, supported by 40 local people, is a very clear signal to Orange that this is not a suitable location for such a high-powered mast.

"It is a densely-populated residential area and they have failed, time and time again, to look at more suitable alternatives.

"Dr Bolton is to be congratulated for his vigilance and I would urge Orange, to be a bit more open."

Report links phone masts to cancer

DAVID BALE

17 April 2007 09:59

Campaigners fighting phone mast applications today called for all new proposals to be put on hold after a scientific study found they caused cancer.

Telecoms company T-Mobile employed German scientist Dr Peter Neitzke to research potential health risks caused by the equipment but then ignored his findings, preferring to use reports from different experts who said masts pose no significant threat.

Dr Neitzke said once T-Mobile realised the likely outcome of his study it commissioned further research from other scientists which would contradict his work.

T-Mobile, which has about 17 million UK customers, was today condemned by campaigners and its actions were branded an attempt by the industry to keep discussion of potential health risks off the agenda.

Andy Street, who has been campaigning against applications for mobile phone masts near schools and homes in Norwich, said: “These findings should have been published immediately rather than being brushed under the carpet.

“We always thought masts were a risk to health and that the companies knew more about the dangers than they were letting on. For a phone company to ignore its own findings is irresponsible. I want the city council to ban phone mast applications until this report has been fully published and is available to planners.”

His comments were backed by Norwich North MP Ian Gibson, who said: “The council putting a stop on allowing any more mast applications sounds like a very sensible, precautionary measure.

“I think it's better to err on the side of caution.”

The Evening News is fighting the installation of mobile phone masts near homes and schools until they are proven safe through our Put Masts on Hold campaign.

In January 2005, Sir William Stewart, chairman of the National Radiological Protection Board, published a report calling for a precautionary approach to masts near homes and schools. An Evening News investigation that month revealed one in five primary schools in Norwich was within the threshold experts claim could put children at risk.

We also told how a cluster of cancer victims had been living in the shadow of a mobile phone mast in St William's Way, Thorpe St Andrew. At least six people there developed tumours.

Campaigner and city councillor Bert Bremner, who is fighting the eighth application for a mast in the University ward area in four years, said: “It's like tobacco companies hiding the dangers of tobacco. Everything comes out eventually.”

Graham Barker, from Lloyd Road, Taverham, has campaigned against masts for several years. He said: “The whole point of the Evening News campaign was to put masts on hold until we knew the dangers. Now there is credible evidence there are risks.”

Norwich City Council has called on the government to issue new guidelines to planning officers. Council leader Steve Morphew said: “At present planners are not allowed to take account of health concerns, so until the law changes there's not much else we can do.”

David Bradford, chairman of the council's planning committee, added: “We would be interested in seeing this report, which should be made widely available.”

The report was carried out by the Ecolog Institute, which has been researching mobile phone technology since 1992 and was paid by T-Mobile.

Dr Neitzke was working on the study, which was drawn up in 2000 and updated three years later. It was unknown in the UK until it was passed on by European campaigners to the Human Ecological Social Economic Project (HESE) last week. The report stated: “Electromagnetic fields with frequencies in the mobile telecommunications range play a role in the development of cancer. This is particularly notable for tumours of the central nervous system.”

A Department of Health spokesman said: “There is no hard evidence that the health of the public is being affected by the use of mobile phone technologies. Our advice remains the same. We continue to advise a precautionary approach to mobile phone use by under-16s.”

A T-Mobile spokesman said: “It was the aim of T-Mobile to engage four different institutes with the same questions to guarantee an independent and objective discussion.”

Mike Dolan, executive director of the Mobile Operators' Association, said: “The review confirmed that while some scientists had differing views, overall, 'the scientific studies examined in the risk dialogue do not support suspicions that mobile telephony has harmful effects on health'.”

Mobile phone threat to bees:

Mobile phones have wiped out millions of bees, scientists have warned. The phone signals are thought to upset their navigation and they die of exposure after losing their sense of direction.

Up to 90pc of bees have been killed in some areas. But, bizarrely, few dead bodies have been left behind. Instead, the insects vanish.

The phenomenon - Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) - has spread to Europe after appearing in the US last year, where the commercial bee population has declined by about two-thirds. A study by a German researcher found bees refuse to return to their hives if nearby mobiles are left on.

In Britain, CCD has been noticed only in London and the South East. Bee-keeper John Chapple reports that 23 of his 40 hives in the London area have been deserted. With bees thought to contribute £1bn to the UK economy - mainly by pollinating plants - the Government's Bee Unit is investigating.

ECOLOG: Phone cancer report 'buried'
http://www.buergerwelle.de/pdf/phone_cancer_report_buried.htm

Dear Martin: In addition to a criminal investigation re the hidden cell phone report, we also have the "suppressed EMF Interagency Committee Report" (2000) [ http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=EMF+Interagency+Committee+Report%22+%282000%29&btnG=Search ]-- the one that an insider reported to Louis Slesin of "Microwave News" that the word is/was, "....the report may never be presented to Congress!!!"

Since the $46 mil EMF RAPID Study [ http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=EMF+RAPID+Study&btnG=Search ] and the final reviewing committee (above report) did find low level EMF's may cause Leukemia and immune deficiencies, and did confirm/designate EMF's as Class 2B carcinogens [ http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=EMF%27s+as+Class+2B+carcinogens&btnG=Search ], I have to wonder why I now am perhaps the only person in the U.S. who is demanding the EMF Interagency Report be released to Congress?

The EMF RAPID Study had specific amounts of money assigned to various categories which included "informing the public." I wonder if they are using the "watered down" EMF RAPID site for their "poor excuse" in regard to "spreading-the-word" and results of the very expensive, extensive EMF RAPID Study? I have asked various public officials over-the-years to please advise when the report will be released to Congress (some sort of quick announcement was made years ago but the report I refer to was apparently "just shelved......!!!"

The people have literally paid millions of tax dollars for what has ended up to be a website that only those of us who are already concerned about and have knowledge of potential harm from EMF/EMR exposures would even have a reason to look at.

I believe the situation constitutes "a violation of our Civil Rights" but there are no lawyers who will take such a case. The "uninformed, general public" doesn't know about all the dirt that covers up their rights to live a peaceful life -- (or at least as healthy, safe and peaceful as possible in their own homes)!!!
