Hungary's first building to protect its residents from electrosmog and radon gas was completed in November 2006. Residents report feeling more relaxed and better rested than they did in their previous homes.

Electrosmog is caused by everyday electronic devices such as radios, television sets, computer monitors and microwave ovens. The invisible electromagnetic field emanating from these and similar devices is known to increase the chance of developing health problems. Radon is a radioactive gas released from soil and rock under buildings, and is known to increase the risk of lung cancer.

The building on Berzenczei utca 39-41 in Budapest's District IX, was designed and constructed by Quadrat Kft. The company used a system developed in-house known as the "Quadrat System" to protect residents in the 34 apartments from harmful radiation. The company has submitted the technology to the Hungarian Patent Office.

Residents of the Quadrat building are protected from the negative effects of electrosmog by cables, walls, wallpapers and paint that shield them from radiation. The walls of the building also block external radiation caused by transmission sites, for example and various automatic devices were built into the apartment floors to provide further protection. One of these devices cuts off unnecessary power in bedrooms after everyone has gone to bed, said Ferenc Zettisch, head engineer of Quadrat Kft.

Flats protected by Quadrat's system cost two to four per cent more per square meter than regular flats. Éva Székely Varjasné, managing director of the company, said that prospective buyers were informed about the special qualities of the building before they purchased their homes. "We have performed initial tests, and they have shown that radiation is considerably lower in these apartments. The Quadrat System is working well, and some residents have said they sleep better than earlier," she added. Residents have also volunteered to undergo medical tests to monitor their health.

(NewsTarget) Using a cell phone regularly – even a modern one – raises the risk of developing a brain tumor for many users, a new Finnish study published online in the International Journal of Cancer. The study, done by a collection of researchers from many universities and led by Anna Lahkola of the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority in Finland, found firm corollary evidence that using a cell phone causes the risk of getting a brain tumor called a glioma to rise by 40 to 270 percent on the side of the head preferred for using the phone.

• The study compared 1,521 cellular phone users who received a glioma to 3,301 control participants without tumors.

• For people who have used a modern cellular phone for more than 2000 hours in their lifetime, the risk of getting a brain tumor rose by 270 percent.

• The study is considered the second that firmly correlates cell phone usage with an increased risk of developing certain brain tumors.

• The risk was highest among people under the age of 20.

• Older-style analog cell phones already have been shown as a source of brain tumors, but even with the development of digital cellular phones, the risk is still there.

Public concern has been expressed about the possible adverse health effects of mobile telephones, mainly related to intracranial tumors. We conducted a population-based case-control study to investigate the relationship between mobile phone use and risk of glioma among 1,522 glioma patients and 3,301 controls. We found no evidence of increased risk of glioma related to regular mobile phone use (odds ratio, OR = 0.78, 95% confidence interval, CI: 0.68, 0.91). No significant association was found across categories with duration of use, years since first use, cumulative number of calls or cumulative hours of use. When the linear trend was examined, the OR for cumulative hours of mobile phone use was 1.006 (1.002, 1.010) per 100 hr, but no such relationship was found for the years of use or the number of calls. We found no increased risks when analogue and digital phones were analyzed separately. For more than 10 years of mobile phone use reported on the side of the head where the tumor was located, an increased OR of borderline statistical significance (OR = 1.39, 95% CI 1.01, 1.92, p trend 0.04) was found, whereas similar use on the opposite side of the head resulted in an OR of 0.98 (95% CI 0.71, 1.37). Although our results overall do not indicate an increased risk of glioma in relation to mobile phone use, the possible risk in the most heavily exposed part of the brain with long-term use needs to be explored further before firm conclusions can be drawn.

Peiting (sz) - Endlich liegen die Ergebnisse der Peitinger Mobilfunkstudie vor, und die Ergebnisse bestätigen die Sorgen der besorgten Bürgerinnen und Bürger. Im Sommer 2005 hatten sich 126 Personen aus Peiting (Landkreis Weiheim-Schongau) bereit gefunden an dieser Untersuchung teilzunehmen. Bei allen Probanden wurde ein großes Blutbild erstellt, ein umfangreicher Fragebogen zu den Telefongewohnheiten und zur gesundheitlichen Situation erhoben und zusätzlich der Schlafplatz nach der jeweils vorliegenden Strahlenbelastung gemessen.

Der Wormser Umweltmediziner Dr. Peter German, Mitglied der IGUMED und des Ökologischen Ärztebundes hat sich intensiv mit den vorliegenden Daten befasst und nun das beunruhigende Ergebnis vorgestellt.

1. 40 Prozent der in Peiting untersuchten Personen hatten Reticulozytenwerte unter dem Normbereich. Normalerweise finden sich entsprechende Werte bei etwa zwei bis drei Prozent der Bevölkerung und selbst in höher mit Mobilfunkstrahlung belasteten Gruppen waren es bei ähnlichen Untersuchungen höchstens um die 10 Prozent.

2. Es besteht laut der Untersuchung ein signifikanter Zusammenhang zwischen der Höhe der gemessenen Belastung am Schlafplatz (Leistungsflussdichte) und den durch den Fragebogen erhobenen Befindlichkeitsstörungen bzw. Erkrankungen. Das heißt im Klartext: Je höher die Strahlenbelastung, desto kränker waren die untersuchten Personen.

3. Bei vielen, aber nicht bei allen Personen mit höherer Strahlenbelastung fanden sich auch unter der Norm liegende Reticulozytenwerte im Blutbild. Daraus kann man schließen, dass die Probanden eine unterschiedliche Sensibilität gegenüber der vorhandenen Strahlenbelastung entwickeln.

Insgesamt ergibt sich ein sehr bedenkliches Bild in Peiting. Die Untersuchung liefert deutliche Hinweise auf einen tatsächlichen Zusammenhang zwischen mobilfunkverursachter Strahlenbelastung und Störungen von Wohlbefinden und Gesundheit. Zu bedenken ist auch, dass die Untersuchung in Peiting noch vor der Aufrüstung der bestehenden Sendeanlagen auf UMTS bzw. das GPRS-Edge-System erfolgte. Die zwischenzeitlich festgestellten massiven Verschlechterungen im Gesundheitszustand vieler Peitinger Bürgerinnen und Bürger seit dem Sommer 2006 haben die UIP und das Netzwerk Risiko Mobilfunk Peiting dazu veranlasst demnächst eine zweite Untersuchung mit dem selben Personenkreis durchzuführen. Schon jetzt aber wird die Forderung an die politisch Verantwortlichen erhoben, sich endlich um die betroffene Bevölkerung zu kümmern, Grenzwerte in einem ersten Schritt drastisch zu senken und alternative, gesundheitsunbedenkliche Kommunikationstechnologien umzusetzen. Im Zusammenhang mit der gesundheitlichen Belastung durch die derzeit verwendeten Mobilfunktechniken, wie GSM, UMTS, schnurlose Heimtelefone nach DECT-Standart, Wlan und Bluetooth, muss endlich dem Recht auf körperliche Unversehrtheit (GG, Artikel 2) gegenüber den Profitinteressen der Kommunikationsbranche wieder Vorrang eingeräumt werden.

"HEALTH WARNING CALL FOR MOBILE PHONES

A leading environmentalist has urged the Government to force manufacturers to carry a health warning on all mobile phones following a devastating report. Downpatrick-based Walter Graham (below) [head-shot included] made the demand after researchers found new evidence that long-term use can lead to the development of a brain tumour on the side of the user's head. Epidemiologists from five European countries found a 40pc increase in gliomas - a type of brain tumour - among those who had used a mobile for 10 years or more. There was also a clear trend showing brain tumour risk increased with years of use. The study will appear in the upcoming issue of the International Journal of Cancer. Mr Graham said: "A significant increase would have been 10pc. "But 40pc is devastating It's as dramatic as it gets and a giant wake-up call." He added: "The big companies should now be ordered to carry a warning on the packaging of all mobile phones that you have a 40pc chance of getting a brain tumour. "And it should be spelt out in big letters - just like on cigarette packets - so that when people purchase one they know they could be seriously damaging their health." Mr Graham and other campaigners from Ireland the Britain met World Health Organisation officials in Geneva last month to highlight growing concerns over mobile phones. They urged a ban on their sale to under-eights in order to protect children from the harmful side effects of radiation.

Dr George Carlo's Westminster presentation was powerful. He encouraged us to urgently work with medical doctors as people need help. We simply cannot wait for the Government and industry scientists to carry out more research while people suffer with ill health, people need help now while research continues.

Fellow RRT trustee Andrew Mitchell MP opened up the Westminster meeting and RRT trustee Dr Ian Gibson MP chaired the meeting. The Attlee Room is the largest room in Westminster and was at full capacity (150) however; sadly and shamefully the meeting was only attended by approximately four MPs, this is a disgrace when you consider how serious this health issue is and knowing how full the MPs post bags are with letters and petitions from members of the public begging them for help!

Many people are suffering with EHS, cancer and other debilitating illness which they claim is due to EMF exposure. One lady gave a heart breaking account of her suffering and her daughters suffering due to a Vodafone mast near her home, she begged someone to help; she said that she took part in the Essex University double blind study and was able to detect that a phone mast frequency was on or off 100%, she said that she has visited Professor Olle Johansson in Sweden, he said she was suffering with EHS and would be looked after if she lived in Sweden, however, sadly he couldn't help due to the fact that he has no funding and could only offer sympathy. She has visited her MP and doctors, sadly her doctor cannot help her as they have no guidelines to follow. Her account of her terrible suffering moved many people to tears. I hope the stone hearted people in the room realise that this problem is real and start putting health before wealth.

Professor Lawrie Challis attended the meeting, he represents the MTHR Government research programme; he received many heated questions from the audience, one lady asked him if phone masts are safe and he said he could not.

Dr Mike Repacholi recently gave evidence to the scrutiny committee in Jersey as they are considering allowing more phone masts on the Island; Dr John Stather and Dr James Rubin have also given evidence. Barrie Trower, represented our point of view and thankfully Dr Carlo has agreed to visit Jersey today in order to give them his opinion.

The UK is now more aware to the dangers associated with EMFs and ill health. Our Irish friends said they are walking taller today after Dr George Carlo and Dr Gerd Oberfeld's visit to Dublin, it was good to finally hear the truth!

Parents who give their children mobile phones are 'tempting fate' and exposing them to a raft of potential health problems from brain tumors to autism, an international expert has warned. American researcher Dr George Carlo told a conference in Dublin yesterday that he has conducted research which proves that radio waves emitted by mobile phones are causing cellular damage to users. And the scientist says a new study he has conducted, to be published next month, shows a link between electromagnetic radiation from mobile phones and masts and autism. He called on parents not to give children under the age of 12 mobile phones as their DNA and cell membranes are especially vulnerable. Dr Carlo, chairman of the non-profit Science and Public Policy Institute in Washington, was given more than 20m [euro] by the American mobile phone industry in 1993 to investigate possible health risks. After six years of research, he and 200 other scientists from around the globe concluded that manufacturers need to warn the public about the dangers posed by mobiles. Speaking at the Irish Doctors' Environmental Association meeting yesterday, Dr Carlo said his online database set up in 2002 to record incidents from people who believe they have suffered adverse health effects received more than 1 million hits in its first six months and over 30,000 complaints were logged.

HEADACHES In early cases, people were linking their symptoms, which ranged from headaches to sleeplessness, to holding the phone up against their head. However, in the past two years, the vast majority of complaints (up to 90%) have come from people who believe their ailments are due to living next to mobile phone masts.

There are now 2.4 billion people around the world using mobile phones with this figure set to rise. "The big problem is that the wireless infrastructure we have is leading us to a point of no return. As more people use cell phones and Wi-Fi and as we have absolutely stupid experiments of putting Wi-Fi in schools, background radiation is increasing," warned Dr Carlo. He said that rather than relying on masts and antennas, people should put pressure on Government and industry to eliminate health risks by replacing masts with fibre optic cables. He urged people to perform a simple experiment to see first-hand the dangers of mobile phone radiation. When the mobile has only one bar of signal strength, locate the nearest mast and then line up a number of your friends between the phone and the mast. "The bars will go up and up that is because we are great conductors for radiowaves," said Dr Carlo.

The conference also heard from severeal dozen members of the public who claim to have suffered hearing loss, irregular hearbeats and sleeplessness from mobile phone msts near their homes. John Cummins, from Cahir, Co Tipperary, said he and his wife Bridget had both suffered hearing loss while their daughter Rebekah suffered a brain seizure at the age of 12. Doctors could not explain their health complaints. "At night we get a humming effect in our eardrums but when we're away from home we don't get it. "In three streets around the mast over 20 people have had cancer in the last four or five years and there have been two cases of MS and Parkinson's."

Radio 4 "You and Yours" aired a pre-recorded interview with Dr George Carlo and Professor Lawrie Challis which was done after the Westminster meeting last week.

It included Michael Bevington, the teacher who was sick from wifi in his school. The presenter was focussing on wifi.

Prof Challis was saying there is no (or not much) peer reviewed and published research!! Dr Carlo was focussing upon the need for clinical intervention to treat the sick.

Could everyone please e-mail in with your thoughts and experiences. Any details of peer reviewed research would be useful to counteract Prof Challis' assertions.

The more e-mails they get the more likely they are to do another programme on the issue. The press really do like these letters. Some of them are beginning to wake up at last.
