Pentagon blamed over jail 'sadism'

An official report on the Abu Ghraib abuse scandal yesterday blamed a failure of leadership at the Pentagon for negligence over prison conditions and confusion over interrogation rules which led to "Animal House" sadism in the Iraqi jail. The report, by a four-member panel of Pentagon advisers, did not pin direct responsibility on the defence secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, by name, nor did it find any top officials legally culpable.

The worst abuse at Abu Ghraib, it said, was carried out by night shift guards. But the report represented an implicit indictment of the defence secretary's management of the defence department. "We believe there is institutional and personal responsibility right up the chain of command as far as Washington is concerned," James Schlesinger, a former defence secretary who chaired the panel, told reporters yesterday. Mr Rumsfeld issued a non-committal response last night. "The panel has provided important information and recommendations that will be of assistance in our ongoing efforts to improve detention operations," he said in a statement. "The defence department has an obligation to evaluate what happened and to make appropriate changes. The independent panel's contributions will be of great help to us."

Sadism, not interrogation at Abu Ghraib prison

Iraqi teenage prisoners at the Abu Ghraib prison were sodomised and intimidated by using military dogs as part of a sadistic game by US military officers, an army investigation into the prison scandal has found, a media report said. The investigation report by Major General George R Ray has also expanded the circle of soldiers considered responsible for abuse beyond the seven military police soldiers already facing charges, to include more than a dozen others — low ranking soldiers, civilian contractors and medics.

"It had nothing to do with interrogation. It was just them on their own being weird," an army officer familiar with the report was quoted saying by the media report. The report, which is yet to be published, criticises the military leadership, from the prison and up through the highest levels of the US chain of command in Iraq at the time. However, it recommends no action against them. Some of the boys at the prison were only 15 years old.

Rumsfeld held to blame for sadistic abuse at Abu Ghraib

The ultimate blame for the wanton abuse of prisoners at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq goes all the way to the Pentagon's top civilian and military command, a panel has found. Although the group criticised the Defence Secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, its chairman said he should not resign because his forced departure would "be a boon to America's enemies".

Mr Rumsfeld and other civilian leaders were criticised for not laying down consistent, specific policies on the treatment of prisoners.

Terror Tactics and Lies to Force Toxic Vaccines on Texas Schoolchildren

Terror Tactics and Lies to Force Toxic Vaccines on Texas Schoolchildren Despite Available Exemption

Infowars.com

The Austin-American Statesman is reporting today (and helping push the agenda) that Austin School District Officials " are warning parents that children without all required immunizations will not be able to enroll next year."

This is an outright lie. Parents Requesting Open Vaccine Education (PROVE) states: "Thanks to HB 2292 passed in the Texas Legislature and signed by the governor, starting September 1, 2003, Texas will become the 19th state to have a conscientious exemption. HB 2292 also corrected the unconstitutional aspect of the religious exemption. Now the exemption can be for "a religious belief", and the unconstitutional requirement to be an adherent of a recognized religion which opposes immunization has been stricken from law.

Additionally, the criteria allowing a physician to write a medical exemption has broadened to allow doctors more flexibility to write exemptions." The fact is, parents have a right to refuse vaccination. Vaccines have been related to Autism and many, many toxins have been found in vaccines (click here for an archive of articles). It's the parents' choice and the Austin School District is doing everything in its power to intimidate Austinites into subjecting their children to vaccination with these toxins.

The IRS Claims New Patriot Act Type Powers to Punish Political Dissenters

In a precendent-setting case, the IRS wielded new power to punish the political speech of those who "espouse views" the government considers "inconsistent" with government-held beliefs. In a hearing originally closed to the public in a secret tribunal on a military island, but moved to a public location after protests from the press and the public, the IRS wants to wield this power against a former IRS whistleblower, who was forced to resign upon his discovery of fraud in the agency. The IRS claims it can exercise this authority in a secret proceeding without allowing a person the opportunity to cure any alleged mistakes, the opportunity to prepare a defense by knowing the exact facts they are accused of, without any opportunity for discovery, without any opportunity to call witnesses necessary for their defense, without any opportunity to cross examine their accusers, without any opportunity to testify at their own hearing about the merits of their position, without being forced to testify against themselves without such an assertion being held against them, and without even an opportunity for a hearing on the evidence. This power of this little office with a Napoleonic vision goes even beyond the Patriot Act type authority and stories of FBI monitoring of war protestors.

Too Hoover-ish to be true in modern America? Just read the case of the IRS against Joe Banister scheduled for a "hearing" -- a hearing where the IRs prohibited Banister from introducing any witnesses or presenting any evidence as to his defenses, and even discussing the sincerity, the truth or the "reasonableness" of his positions -- on December 1 in the city by the bay, in the Tax Court chambers of the federal courthouse in San Francisco. History is being made.

McCain, 9/11 panel want national ID debate

The vice chairman of the Sept. 11 Commission told a Senate panel Monday that the commission's recommendations on border and transportation security "might lead to" a national identity card.

Although the commission shied away from directly making the controversial call in its final report, "We did recommend national standards for drivers' licenses," Vice Chairman Lee Hamilton told the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee. "Over time," he told committee Chairman Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., "that might lead to a national ID card." "Isn't that a fundamental issue that we're going to have to address as a nation?" McCain asked Commission Chairman Tom Kean. The American Civil Liberties Union said in a statement Tuesday that federal standards for drivers' licenses constituted a "backdoor attempt to create a national ID-card system and a serious threat to privacy, liberty and safety."

They said the idea "would provide a new tool for racial, religious or ethnic profiling and would lead to far more illegal discrimination."

Technology vs. Torture

Psychopharmaceuticals and brain imaging could make prisoner interrogation more humane. Should we use them?

INFOWARS.COM

MSNBC Piece Touts Brain Scanning Technologies and Psychopharmaceuticals as Means to Get Information from Prisoners

The tools for radically transforming tomorrow's interrogations can be found in hospitals worldwide. They're helping to painlessly diagnose Alzheimer's, dyslexia, epilepsy, schizophrenia, insomnia, and brain tumors. The past decade has seen revolutions both in brain-scanning technologies and in drugs that affect the brain's functions. Like personal computers and digital camcorders, these technologies are getting faster, better, and cheaper. And they may have uses in the interrogation room that will render moot debates about the excesses of Abu Ghraib-style treatment of prisoners. Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging brain scans, for example, have improved so dramatically that they can now produce high-resolution movies of brain activity. Functional MRIs can measure how the brain reacts when asked certain questions, such as, "Do you know Mr. X?" or, "Have you seen this man?" When you ask someone a question, the parts of the brain responsible for answering will cause certain neurons to fire, drawing blood flow. The oxygen in the blood then changes the brain's magnetic field so that a neural radio signal emitted becomes more intense. Functional MRI scanners detect and calibrate these changes.

And by comparing the resulting images to those of the brain at rest, a computer can produce detailed pictures of the part of the brain answering or not answering the question—in essence, creating a kind of high-tech lie detector. Indeed, a Pentagon agency is already funding Functional MRI research for such purposes.

Idea of implanting ID tags raises Orwellian fears

There's not a lot of middle ground on the subject of implanting electronic identification chips in humans. Advocates of technologies like radio frequency identification tags say their potentially life-saving benefits far outweigh any Orwellian concerns about privacy. RFID tags sewn into clothing or even embedded under people's skin could curb identity theft, help identify disaster victims and improve medical care, they say. Critics, however, say such technologies would make it easier for government agencies to track a person's every movement and allow widespread invasion of privacy. Abuse could take countless other forms, including corporations surreptitiously identifying shoppers for relentless sales pitches.

Critics also speculate about a day when people's possessions will be tagged--allowing nosy subway riders with the right technology to examine the contents of nearby purses and backpacks.

Implanted chips raise privacy worries

The overriding idea behind tagging people with chips — whether through implants or wearable devices such as bracelets — is to improve identification and, consequently, tighten access to restricted information or physical areas. But on top of civil liberties and other policy issues, such technologies face visceral objections from many people who frown on the idea of being implanted with tags that can track them like migrating tuna. Complaints have led several companies to abandon plans to use RFID technologies in products, much less in human bodies. The concept of implanting chips for tracking purposes was introduced to the general public more than a decade ago, when pet owners began using them to keep tabs on dogs and cats.

The notion of embedding RFID tags in the human body, though, remained largely theoretical until the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, when a technology executive saw firefighters writing their badge numbers on their arms so that they could be identified in case they became disfigured or trapped.

Richard Seelig, vice-president of medical applications at security specialist Applied Digital Solutions, inserted a tracking tag in his own arm and told the company's CEO that it worked. A new product, the VeriChip, was born.

Big Brother, big business

GEORGE Orwell first coined the term, numerous sci-fi books and movies have delved into it, and now there’s also a reality show on TV: Big Brother fears are gradually becoming a real-world concern. Just look at Japan, where the schoolbags and uniforms of primary school kids are being tagged with microchips that can track their whereabouts on school grounds. All a Japanese kid has to do is to pass by readers that have been installed in the school gates and at other key locations, and his location will be captured and relayed to the school surveillance system.

In the Ross Correctional Facility in Chillicothe, Ohio, inmates are now part of a pilot project which requires them to wear wristwatch-sized devices that transmit radio signals to the readers and then to the prison computer, allowing authorities to determine their exact location. Tamper with the devices, and they will set off an alarm, allowing prison guards to easily track down the inmates.

These applications all stem from a not-so-new wireless technology called radio frequency identification (RFID). Its ultimate objective is to trace, identify and connect objects with objects, via radiowaves.

Terror watch lists are tough to escape

If your name mistakenly is placed on a terrorism watch list by federal officials, setting the record straight is often difficult. Just ask Sen. Edward Kennedy. The nation's confusing array of terrorism watch lists -- such as those that snagged Sen. Edward M. Kennedy and Rep. John Lewis -- can be easy to get on, but far more difficult to get off.

It took Kennedy, one of the country's best-known senators, three weeks and several calls to federal officials to separate his identity from that of a person with a similar name on the no-fly list. Lesser-known Americans face greater hurdles when their name is flagged by an airline computer. TSA and the DHS do not disclose the names on the watch lists or any details about the lists. But a government official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said that a number of watch lists are being consolidated, and it wasn't clear which agency put a name similar to Kennedy's on the list. The TSA reportedly has a few thousand names on a ''no fly'' list, which bans people from boarding plans, and another few thousand on a list that identifies people for additional screening, the official said.

Do you worry about what the future holds for today's children?

A Quaker lady sent this out to a number of people. Thought you might be interested.

Robert Jordan Ross

Friends,

For the past eighteen months I have been part of a group of eleven women who meet together to discuss the opportunities and challenges facing women over 60. We come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. We have had different professional and life experiences. Among us we have thirty-two grandchildren.

As the time for the election grew closer, we realized that whatever our differences, we shared a common concern: the future of our grandchildren. Regardless of our political affiliation we have lived long enough to know that it takes time to build good institutions and programs, a healthy economy and international cooperation. We know that the decisions American leaders make today will shape the lives of our grandchildren over the next decades; yet the current political discourse focuses on the near term and the self interest of today's voters.

So we decided that this year we are going to vote not for ourselves but for our grandchildren who can't vote for themselves. We decided to launch a national non-partisan effort whose goal would be to compel political candidates to explain how their policies will affect our grandchildren, not tomorrow, but ten, twenty, fifty years from now. We decided to accomplish our goals through an active email campaign (such as this email), through op-ed letters, discussion groups and several other national and local events. We are urging our friends and colleagues to do the same. We ask you to join us if you care about the future of today's grandchildren.

I urge you to learn more about this effort. Please get involved this election whether or not you are a grandparent! Stay informed. Follow the issues. Learn about the America candidates envision for all our nation's grandchildren. We have many ideas about how you can impact our political system. Go to http://www.grannyvoter.org on the web and learn more about us and the things you can do to make a difference.

And please, forward this e-mail to everyone you know who cares about today's grandchildren and ask them to do the same.

Love to all of you. I know that together we will make a difference for the future.

Deshalb: Jetzt erst recht: Montagsdemonstrationen gegen Hartz IV!

New York papers play up "anarchist threat"

Village Voice

Is it just us, or are these scary stories about anarchists plotting mayhem at the Republican convention starting to read like a preemptive hit? Just today the Daily News led with 'Police Intelligence Warning: Anarchy Inc. Hard-core troublemakers a threat to the Republican Convention.' This kind of coverage sets the stage for brutal treatment of even peaceful activists. At last fall's Free Trade of the Americas summit in Miami, police fed media hysteria about the ugly hordes descending on the city to justify their Rambo-like assault on union members and nonviolent demonstrators with rubber bullets and taser guns. ... Whatever the source of these overblown threats and warnings, the effect may be to instill in peaceful protesters a fear of turning out for demonstrations, and in cops an animosity toward demonstrators -- making confrontations on the street all the more inevitable...

The nation's poverty rate rose for a third straight year in 2003 and the ranks of the uninsured swelled, the Census Bureau said Thursday in a report sure to fuel election-season debate over President Bush's handling of the economy. Although the economy completed a second full year of expansion in 2003 after a recession that ended in November 2001, median household income just barely kept up with inflation and was statistically unchanged at about $43,300, the bureau said." Brief an Bundeskanzler Gerhard Schröder

Mobilfunkbetreiber blenden Realität aus

Unten ein Zeitungsartikel der Neuen Presse, Coburg zur Naila- Studie mit einem Interview des vodafone Pressesprechers

und http://www.buergerwelle.de/pdf/rueckkehr_zur_sachlichen_diskussion_teil2.jpg
und ein Leserbrief dazu von Hrn. Neckermann
http://www.buergerwelle.de/pdf/wer_bezahlt_vodafone_pressesprecher.jpg .

Echt toll!

Herrn Bundeskanzler, Dr. Gerhard Schröder, Bundeskanzleramt, 11012 Berlin

Gesch.Z. 312 – K – 613 918/01/0001
Mobilfunk
Ihr Schreiben vom 02.01.2002

Sehr geehrter Herr Bundeskanzler,

Die Vorgänger-Regierung hat eine Situation wie "Weißer Mann in Afrika" hinterlassen: eine auf lückenhafter und gefälschter Basis erstelle Gesetzeslage für Bau und Betrieb von Mobilfunkanlagen, damit eine Freibeuter-"Lizenz zum Senden", unter Entmündigung der Betroffenen, des Umweltschutzes, Gesundheitswesens und der Kommunen, und in den maßgebenden Gremien (z.B. Strahlenschutzkommission) eine latent korrumpierte Personenausstattung, die den Betreibern unverantwortbaren Vorschub leistet: "Bock zum Gärtner", die Gewohnheit eingeführt, alles was einem nicht passt, mit oder ohne Ausrede zu ignorieren, zu unterschlagen, zu verwässern, auszusitzen oder madig zu machen;

Feds Press Salt Assault

The Assalt on Salt

Since 1995, 10 studies have reported on whether lower sodium diets produce health benefits. All 10 studies indicate that, among the general population, lower sodium diets do not produce health benefits. In fact, not a single study has ever shown improved health outcomes for broad populations on reduced sodium diets.

Studies by hypertension specialist and American Hypertension Society past-president Michael Alderman even report an increased risk of heart attack and a higher death rate among some individuals on low-salt diets.

Do you find that hard to believe? Do you wonder why the Government and major health organizaitions have been telling us to avoid salt for last 30 years? The answer to this question and the latest reseach is "eye-opening" to say the least:

Feds Press Salt Assault

Thursday, February 12, 2004

By Steven Milloy

Americans should slash their consumption of salt by half says a new government report. But the recommendation has no basis in science and may even be harmful to your health.

“Healthy 19-to 50-year old adults should consume no more than 1,500 milligrams of sodium per day,” recommended a panel of the National Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Medicine (IOM). That’s quite a reduction from the currently recommended 2,400 milligrams of sodium per day and average consumption of more than 4,000 milligrams per day.

Too much dietary salt increases blood pressure which, in turn, may lead to stroke, coronary heart disease -- or so the IOM panel claims. Existing scientific data, however, do not support this commonly-held belief.

Dietary salt may, in some sensitive people, slightly increase their blood pressure, but it’s not clear that the increase leads to health effects or that restricting their intake of salt makes them any healthier.

Since 1995, 10 studies have reported on whether lower sodium diets produce health benefits. All 10 studies indicate that, among the general population, lower sodium diets don’t produce health benefits. In fact, not a single study has ever shown improved health outcomes for broad populations on reduced sodium diets.

Just last week, in fact, a coalition of six Canadian medical groups rejected a recommendation for universal salt restriction, choosing instead to make lifestyle recommendations for reducing blood pressure such as exercising, eating a balanced diet, and stress management.

The IOM would be on firmer ground if it limited its recommendation to “salt sensitive” individuals, rather than the general public. Genetic background and lifestyle make some people hypersensitive to salt intake.

The IOM panel recommendation is “nonsense,” said Dr. Lawrence M. Resnik, executive editor of the American Journal of Hypertension and a professor at CornellMedicalCollege. Resnick was a member of the IOM panel until his resignation over the panel’s disregard for testimony and data that contradicted its apparently pre-determined recommendation.

Dr. Alexander Logan, co-author of the Canadian recommendations, observed that the difference between the Canadian and U.S. recommendations came down to process. The Canadian recommendations were based on a rigorous examination and consideration of the available scientific evidence according to an established protocol whereas the IOM panel operated under “no rules” ? that is, without regard to scientific standards and process ? according to Dr. Logan.

The conduct of the IOM panel is made more egregious by the fact that its recommendation may very well place some people at risk.

Studies by hypertension specialist and American Hypertension Society past-president Michael Alderman even report an increased risk of heart attack and a higher death rate among some individuals on low-salt diets.

Since no data supports limiting sodium intake to 1,500 milligrams per day, you might wonder why the IOM panel would urge such an uncontrolled experiment on the general public. An IOM panel member who didn’t want to be identified indicated that one of the panel’s goals was to get African-Americans, who tend to be more salt sensitive, to reduce their sodium intake.

But because the panel didn’t think that singling out African-Americans was an effective public health strategy, it decided to “overcompensate” and make the recommendation for the general population ? thereby shifting the burden to the food industry to reduce salt content in foods. African Americans, then, couldn’t help but eat less salt. Another motivation is more political.

The U.S. health establishment’s official position, as espoused for the last 30 years by the National Institutes of Health, is that everyone should restrict their salt intake. Regardless of the science, the NIH is not about to admit it’s been wrong ? even to the extent of refusing to make publicly available all the data on which the current dietary salt recommendation is based.

Fortunately for the NIH, the IOM panel was well stacked with sycophants that could be relied on not to bite the hand that feeds them. A majority of the IOM panel, including chairman Lawrence Appel, all receive research grants from the NIH.

In an effort to make the food industry rather than the NIH the problem, Dr. Appel told the Associated Press, “There are commercial interests that don’t want this to happen.”

But why should the food industry be forced to sell less tasty food for no good reason?

More importantly, does it really make sense to experiment with the public health so that government bureaucrats don’t have to admit they’ve been wrong for the last 30 years?

The American Bald Eagle Is Back

The bald eagle, whose numbers had dipped dangerously, is now back from the brink of extinction. Today, thousands of American bald eagles fly the skies of the lower 48 states - a powerful symbol that shows the Endangered Species Act works.

But the Feds Won't Act:

This remarkable recovery should not go unnoticed. In May, Environmental Defense called on President George W. Bush to follow through on the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service's (FWS) five-year-old promise to take the bald eagle off the endangered species list. The FWS is still dragging its feet and the bald eagle's dramatic comeback has yet to receive the government's stamp of approval. You can help. Sign the Eagle Pledge and urge President Bush to delist the bald eagle:

http://actionnetwork.org/ct/GpaYwHs1zj8u/

Bald Eagle's Decline and Recovery:

It's hard to imagine that we nearly lost our national symbol. The bald eagle's long decline began in the 19th century as forest clearing, other habitat loss and hunting sharply reduced eagle numbers. Following World War II, the pesticide DDT contaminated fish and other eagle prey. Female eagles laid eggs with shells too thin, which were often crushed by the parent bird, and the eagle's numbers plummeted. By 1963, only 417 pairs remained in the continental United States.

Today, nearly 8,000 pairs nest in the lower 48 states, and Americans can watch bald eagles at wildlife refuges, state parks, national parks, along coastlines, on private lands and in large winter flocks along waterways in almost every state -- thanks in large part to the Endangered Species Act.

Take Action! Sign the Eagle Pledge:

Sign the Eagle Pledge and urge President Bush to take the bald eagle off the endangered species list - a move that would mark the bald eagle's remarkable recovery and give Americans faith in our nation's conservation efforts.

Back from the Brink is a Environmental Defense campaign aimed at shining a spotlight on 15 endangered species that ordinary Americans can help bring back from the brink of extinction. Our commitment is to restore private land habitat in more than 20 states, working with ranchers, farmers and other private landowners, as well as scientists and wildlife experts.

African-American Leaders Call on Republicans to End Vote Suppression Tactics

MOVEON PAC TO BUSH, REPUBLICAN PARTY:

DISAVOW MINORITY VOTER SUPPRESSION

In New Petition, MoveOn, African-American Leaders Call on Republicans to End Vote Suppression Tactics

MoveOn PAC Releases Benny Boom Ad To Encourage Voting;

MoveOn PAC announced today that, together with Julian Bond, chairman of the NAACP*, Rev. Jesse Jackson, and other African-American elected officials, it is launching an on-line petition demanding an end to Republican efforts to suppress the votes of minority and specifically African-American voters.

MoveOn PAC also announced the release of a new 30-second TV spot produced by noted hip-hop director Benny Boom aimed at spurring registration, voting and turnout among younger and minority voters.

The petition, addressed to President Bush, Ken Mehlman and Ed Gillespie specifically asks the Republican Party and the Bush/Cheney campaign to disavow all forms of voter suppression, including voter intimidation, misinformation, purges of voter roles that disenfranchise qualified voters, the threat to discount provisional ballots, and other actions that undermine the rights of qualified Americans to vote.

“Rather than trying to win over African-American and minority voters on the issues, Republicans are simply trying to prevent them from voting,” said James Rucker, Director of Grassroots Mobilization for MoveOn PAC. “The approach is racist, undemocratic and has no place in American politics.”

The Reverend Jesse Jackson, Sr. indicated this petition is only one part of a massive effort to address this issue, saying, “We will mobilize our communities to halt all voter suppression efforts of the rightwing aimed at thwarting the democratic vote of the people.”

A new report released yesterday by People For the American Way Foundation and the NAACP highlighted the systematic efforts across the country to deny qualified voters the ability to exercise their most basic democratic right. The entire report can be found on PFAW’s website at http://www.pfaw.org/pfaw/general/default.aspx?oId=16368.

The ad will start next week during the Republican Convention. It has been submitted to MTV and BET and will run on other youth and urban-focused stations if it does not run on those networks.

Radiation News Stories

** It is unclear whether the new school year will open in Einstein school in Haifa, because the school is irradiated by an army A.M antenna and parents oppose their children will study there. One of the pupils is the grandchild of our Environment Minister. This antenna has been there for many years and in the 90's it was blamed for the high cancer rate in Einstein street, the citizens fought and as a result, the antenna was closed. Now, in summer 2004, the A.M station multiplied to a cellular antennas farm, with 4 huge towers very close to houses and to the school. Still, the A.M station is again at the center of events. After the residents in the area have heard the army radio station "Galey Zahal" through the electronic equipment in their houses - through turned off computer's loudspeakers, through the T.V., telephones, entercom, the cars remote controls don't work - the Cities Union hired Ehud Neaman to measure the radiation there, and it was found that in one of the houses it was 400% more than the 20 uw/cm2 which is the israeli Environment Ministry non-obligatoy standard, and near the school 2.8 fold more than this standard. The mayor demands to close immediately the station but the army says that it rejects the radiation claims, the army spokeperson says that a year ago, the Env. Ministry measured the radiation there and it was ok.

Actually, the Env. Ministry measured the radiation but didn't find anything [well that's what they say], and that's the reason the Cities Union hired Ehud Neaman who found the high radiation. Now, after the results were published on local & national T.V and in the newspaper, the Ministry claims that it found similar results as Ehud Neaman found. Within a week the school year is supposed to open and what will happen with the pupils is unclear, the parents say they are not sleeping well now and don't agree to send their children to Einstein school.

** Also in Israel- a new governmental team will investigate the radiation from the antennas. As a results from the citizens complains, a committe of the ministers of science and technology will investigate the radiation.

This news item says that although there is accumulation of knowledge that is funded by the cellular companies, we don't have a national body that gathers all the information and produces reliable guidelines.

The science minister Ilan Shalgy says that this subject is a hot potato that everyone throws from hand to hand. He says that the knowledge is gathered in different hands but nobody coordionates them and no upper body took the responsibility to give answers. He says the subject is not advanced although it has been treated by different governmental committees for about 10 years. The team is expected to recommend within 3 months on the way to establish a national knowldge center for research on electromagnetic radiation and its effects on public health.

** The investement bank Meryl Linch made an international comparison and found again that Israel is the second in the world in the quantity of the cellular phone calls. In the first quarter of this year Israel was first in the world, with penetration of 102% procents. In Israel there are more phones than citizens.

This "achievement" is attributed to the low prices that were at the beginning of the technology in Israel, because the communication ministry and Cellcom company wanted the technology to penetrate "the deepest it could".

Also another reason is that Israelies accept very easily new technologies, they tend to adopt new technologies quicker than anywhere else in the world. [that is why it will be so hard to try to make a change in Israel]

** Yesterday it was reported that a teenager felt suddenly headaches in a party, a sensitivity to light was diagnosed but the doctors didn't unserstand what's wrong with him because all his checks were normal. He had migranes, and he is unconscious now. The doctors "solved" the problem by claiming it is a virus.

Media Reform Needed for a Continuing Democracy

by Peter Phillips

The First Amendment of the US constitution, guaranteeing freedom of the press, was established to maximize citizen cognition of critical issues in society. It was understood clearly by the founders that Democracy could only be maintained through an informed electorate.

A daily newspaper, along with the three major TV networks, ABC, CBS, NBC, as well as CNN, MSNBC, and Fox, are the major sources of news and information for most Americans. News stories and the invidious entertainment segments from these corporate sources generally have similar themes and common frames of understanding. This concentration of access to media sources leaves most Americans with very narrow parameters of news awareness and an almost complete lack of competing opinions.

Important questions that impact most Americans are generally ignored. Why are 45 million American without health care? Why is poverty increasing in the US? What happened to the safety net of social programs for the disadvantaged? What are the underlying reasons - other than oil - for the invasion and occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan? Will the military draft be re-instituted in the US after the 04 election? What is the truth behind global warming and extreme weather conditions? Where have all the living wage jobs gone? Why is minimum wage now at 60% of its value in 1968? Who got rich in the 90s and kept the money? Who owns the electronic voting machine companies?

Each of these questions and many more directly affect nearly every American and their personal motivations to participate in the democratic process. Yet the corporate media choose not to address these important issues in any significant way. Instead, they are keeping us on top of the Peterson murder case, the Michael Jackson trial and the threat of new terror attacks.

By not addressing relevant issues facing everyday Americans, the corporate media are weakening democracy in the US. More than half the eligible voters in the country do not vote in elections. Most non-voters believe their vote matters very little. Therefore, they do not make the effort to distinguish important issues between candidates nor do the corporate media do it for them. Non-voters often see little difference between the two primary political parties and tend to believe that voting is a waste of time.

The corporate media agenda of maximum profits undermines the public purpose of a free press by creating the fiscal necessity for cutting costs and increasing the entertainment content. Ratings and audience share translate to higher advertising value and higher profits. This structural arrangement of corporate media results in an electorate who perceive few personal reasons to get involved, not just as voters but as activists on political issues as well.

How can we address media reform to broaden citizen democratic participation? The regulator of the media -- the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) -- is the body established to insure that the purposes of the First Amendment are maintained. Bush administration pro-corporate media appointees, however, have captured the FCC. Chaired by Michael Powell, the FCC has been trying to relax the media ownership rules by allowing expanded market share by any single media conglomerate and they propose to deregulate the rules of cross ownership between radio, television and newspapers in the same locale.

Members of Congress have been attempting to scale back the proposed FCC changes, but they need a public outcry to encourage them to continue their efforts.

Media reform is not a topic covered by the corporate media themselves and without a strong public expression of concern congressional resolve may weaken in an election year. We must continue the pressure and demand that a diversity of independent news sources be maintained in every city. And we must ask for public funding of locally-controlled grassroots independent news agencies throughout the country as well. Democracy is too precious to lose.

Investigation faults intel unit members for Abu Ghraib

Twenty-seven members of an intelligence unit at Abu Ghraib prison either requested or condoned certain abuses of Iraqi prisoners there, an Army investigation found.

Also was tun?
