Bed types and cancer incidence

As a follow-up of the paper on left-sided cancers (see http://omega.twoday.net/stories/5875143/ ) I made a preliminar search for information on the use of metal-spring mattresses in different parts of the world to see if there was a correlation with breast-cancer and melanoma. This appears to be the case and I suggested a deeper study on the subject in a Letter to the Editor, now available at Pathophysiology as E-pub.

Mobile Phone Use and Risk of Tumors

Analysis of cellphone studies finds tumor risk

Scientists looking at 23 studies involving almost 38,000 people initially see no connection. But a closer look at the highest-quality studies tells another story.

By Shari Roan

October 14, 2009

The answer to the question of whether cellphones increase the risk of brain, head and neck tumors is truly a matter of whom you ask.

An analysis published Tuesday of data from 23 epidemiological studies found no connection between cellphone use and the development of cancerous or benign tumors. But when eight of the studies that were conducted with the most scientific rigor were analyzed, cellphone users were shown to have a 10% to 30% increased risk of tumors compared with people who rarely or never used the phones. The risk was highest among those who had used cellphones for 10 years or more.

Radiation from phone masts

Wednesday October 14 2009

Sir, I would like to respond to Dr Nolan's letter on safety issues with mobile phone masts, published in The Kerryman of October 7.

Dr Nolan is wrong when he says that non-ionising radiation cannot affect living things if it is too weak to generate significant heat. The most obvious examples are the effects of visible light, which is of course non-ionising. Were it not for its effects on chlorophyll, plants would not be able to photosynthesise and, were it not for its effects on our visual pigments, we would not be able to see.

There is another irony in what Dr Nolan failed to understand and what Andrew tells us.

For something like 50 years it was axiomatic that DNA strand breaks and cancer induced by ionising radiation was (and only could be) a result of the ionising particle (alpha, beta or gamma ray) actually cutting the DNA at the point the break is seen.

Then suddenly these assumptions ended with the discovery of The Bystander Effect in which cells that had never been hit by ionising radiation, but were in the vicinity of those that were, or were cultured in culture medium which had previously had cells in them that were irradiated, had DNA strand breaks induced in them. This occurs by a cell signaling effect from hit cells. In fact, we now know that the link between radon exposure in the home and lung cancer is NOT primarily an effect of DIRECT alpha-particle hits to cells, rather is an effect in ‘Bystander cells’ – on those not hit !.

The problem is that the term ‘strand break’ is itself misleading. Here is an extract from some of my notes on this:

Magnetic Fields and DNA strand breaks

Historically, it was argued that unlike ionizing radiation, the low quantum energy of MFs was insufficient to cause DNA strand breaks and therefore could not cause cancer. The term ‘strand break’ is potentially misleading to the general reader. Lea (1946) used the term structural change to describe breakages in chromosomes, which appeared to be caused by an ionising particle passing through or in the immediate vicinity of the chromosome at the point where the breakage occurred. Lea acknowledged that such changes were actually due to radiation given to the cell at a stage prior to metaphase. However, adoption of the term breakage implied that the DNA had been broken, chopped or cut by the passage of radiation at that specific location on the chromosome. Almost 50 years later Nagaswa & Little (1992) demonstrated that genetic chromosomal damage may be induced by low doses of a-radiation in cell nuclei not actually traversed by an a-particle. The phenomenon was termed the bystander effect. It has since been demonstrated for high and low-LET radiation, certain chemicals and heavy metals (Little 2006, Xiao et al. 2004) and forms a central concept in modern radiobiology. The important conceptual conclusion is that chromosomal aberrations reflecting DNA strand breaks represent replication failures in the DNA template. Such failures are associated with coding information and not necessarily quantum energy at the level associated with ionising radiation. The myriad of responses involving genetic damage seen following exposures to MFs are consistent with such loss of coding information.

On the Induction of Sperm Head Abnormalities in Mice, Mus musculus, Exposed to Radiofrequency Radiations

Bull Environ Contam Toxicol. 2009 Oct 9. [Epub ahead of print]

Preliminary Study on the Induction of Sperm Head Abnormalities in Mice, Mus musculus, Exposed to Radiofrequency Radiations from Global System for Mobile Communication Base Stations.

The exposure of male mice to radiofrequency radiations from mobile phone (GSM) base stations at a workplace complex and residential quarters caused 39.78 and 46.03%, respectively, in sperm head abnormalities compared to 2.13% in control group. Statistical analysis of sperm head abnormality score showed that there was a significant (p < 0.05) difference in occurrence of sperm head abnormalities in test animals. The major abnormalities observed were knobbed hook, pin-head and banana-shaped sperm head. The occurrence of the sperm head abnormalities was also found to be dose dependent. The implications of the observed increase occurrence of sperm head abnormalities on the reproductive health of humans living in close proximity to GSM base stations were discussed.

Abstract
It is well established that strong electromagnetic fields (EMFs) can give rise to acute health effects, such as burns, which can be effectively prevented by respecting exposure guidelines and regulations. Current concerns are instead directed toward the possibility that long-term exposure to weak EMF might have detrimental health effects due to some biological mechanism, to date unknown. (1) The possible risk due to pulsed EMF at frequency 2.45 GHz and mean power density 2.8 mW/cm2 on rat postnatal neurogenesis was studied in relation to the animal’s age, duration of the exposure dose, and post-irradiation survival. (2) Proliferating cells marker, BrdU, was used to map age- and dose-related immunohistochemical changes within the rostral migratory stream (RMS) after whole-body exposure of newborn (P7) and senescent (24 months) rats. (3) Two dose-related exposure patterns were performed to clarify the cumulative effect of EMF: short-term exposure dose, 2 days irradiation (4 h/day), versus long-term exposure dose, 3 days irradiation (8 h/day), both followed by acute (24 h) and chronic (1–4 weeks) post-irradiation survival. (4) We found that the EMF induces significant age- and dose-dependent changes in proliferating cell numbers within the RMS. Our results indicate that the concerns about the possible risk of EMF generated in connection with production, transmission, distribution, and the use of electrical equipment and communication sets are justified at least with regard to early postnatal neurogenesis.

The underlying mechanisms associated with electro sensitivity

I gave a talk on the mechanisms by which electro hyper-sensitivity symptoms occur, at a meeting of about 100 EHS sufferers last Saturday. It was held at the Head Office of Samworth Bros (Makers of Ginster's pies and many supermarket own-brand ready-meals) whose CEO has severe EHS and had a special EMF-free room constructed for the purpose. A recording of it can be found at http://electrosensitivityuk.podbean.com/
