Do we really care about the children?

Human Events
by Walter Williams

I cringe with disgust when I hear politicians say, 'We're doing it for the children.' What's worse is so many Americans mindlessly fall hook, line and sinker for the hype. Judging by our actions, Americans could not care less for future generations, and future generations will curse us for it. Let's look at it. According to several respected authorities, including the Concord Coalition (co-chaired by former Sens. Warren Rudman and Robert Kerrey), the Congressional Budget Office, U.S. Treasury Secretary John Snow, and the Social Security Administration, the estimated present value of the unfunded liability of Social Security and Medicare ranges between $61 trillion and $75 trillion dollars...

The fight we want

Intellectual Conservative
by Bruce Walker

Was selecting Miers a disaster, then? Perhaps. There is another possibility, however: even conservatives may have 'mis-underestimated' President Bush. Alito looks so great by comparison to Miers that all the initial news about the qualifications and temperament of Alito will be positive. Could it be that Miers was intended to befuddle the Left? Stranger things have happened...

Abramoff-Scanlon School of Sleaze

Salon
by Michael Scherer

Up-and-coming Republican hacks would do well to watch closely the ongoing Senate investigations of superstar lobbyist Jack Abramoff and his former business partner Michael Scanlon. The power duo stand accused of exploiting Native American tribes to the tune of roughly $66 million, laundering that money into bank accounts they controlled and then using it to buy favors for powerful members of Congress and the executive branch. But they sure did know how to play the game. Consider one memo highlighted in a Capitol Hill hearing Wednesday that Scanlon, a former aide to Rep. Tom DeLay, R-Tx., sent the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana to describe his strategy for protecting the tribe's gambling business. In plain terms, Scanlon confessed the source code of recent Republican electoral victories: target religious conservatives, distract everyone else, and then railroad through complex initiatives... by Stefan Molyneux

[T]he standard to compare the stateless society's response to violent crime is not some perfect world where thugs are effectively dealt with, but rather the current mess where violence is both encouraged and protected. Before we turn to how a stateless society deals with crime, however, it is essential to remember that the stateless society automatically eliminates the greatest violence faced by almost all of us -- the State that threatens us with guns if we don't hand over our money -- and our lives, should it decide to declare war. Thus it cannot be said that the existing system is one which minimizes violence. Quite the contrary -- the honest population is violently enslaved by the State, and the dishonest provided with cash incentives and protection...

Abu Ghraib: General Karpinski Says Fault Goes to Cheney, Rumsfeld

Brig. Gen. Janis Karpinski, the highest-ranking Army officer to be punished for the Abu Ghraib prison scandal, said Tuesday night that blame for the incident should go as high as Vice President Dick Cheney and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

Rove Could Lose Security Clearance

According to last week's indictment of Scooter Libby, a person identified as "Official A" held conversations with reporters about Plame's identity as an undercover CIA operative, information that was classified. News accounts subsequently confirmed that that official was Rove. Under Executive Order 12958, signed by President Clinton in 1995, such a disclosure is grounds for, at a minimum, losing access to classified information.
