WE'RE ON A ROLL. NOW WE STAND UP AGAINST THE PATRIOT ACT

Today's vote in the House, resoundingly rejecting the administration's cruel budget cuts for the poor to finance more tax cuts for the rich, was no surprise to the more than 6,000 participants of our system who submitted their personal objections to their members of Congress. And now there are also more voices in the Senate demanding that we pull in the reins on the out of control fascist aspects of propaganda named Patriot Act. The administration's FBI plants are actually fighting for language to authorize "UNNECESSARY" intrusive searches.

Republicans Craig, Sununu and Murkowski, and Democrats Durbin, Feingold and Salazar are to be credited for being outraged that even the very modest restraints against abuse of government power in the bill were cut out by the conference committee. We need to send them our messages of support on this, and tell the rest of our senators who are not on board to start fighting for we the people for a change.

THIS IS YET ANOTHER REASON TO OPPOSE ALITO FOR SUPREME COURT

Of course, regardless of what abuses of presidential power the Congress might rubberstamp were we NOT to speak out, you can be sure that Bush's latest designated player, Supreme Court nominee Alito, would wave it through. His paper trail is not nearly as well hidden as was Roberts, and the more we learn, the more we understand that he is nothing but a reactionary with a committed lifelong agenda. Please not only demand his rejection, but that ANY replacement for Sandra Day O'Connor be no worse than a true moderate centrist

The restrictions have grown so tight that the normally quiescent American Society of Newspaper Editors last fall issued a "call to arms" to its members, urging them to "demand answers in print and in court" to stop this "deeply disturbing" trend. With the President's poll numbers down and infighting among conservatives more visible, the coverage of Washington has sharpened of late, but overall the climate remains hostile to good reporting.
