Energy plan jolts Emporia families

Westar wants to expand a substation in Emporia to accommodate Hill's, but neighbors are alarmed

By Tim Carpenter

The Capital-Journal

Published Sunday, November 23, 2008

There is reason to cast a wary eye out the window while standing at the sink overlooking a Westar Energy substation. The kitchen appears to be a magnet for stray voltage suspected of escaping from the towering web of steel framing, wire and transformers that casts a shadow over Evans' neighborhood.

Pylons 'double risk of dying from dementia'

UK NEWS

Pylons: Linked to dementia

Tuesday November 11, 2008

By Nick Fagge

LIVING close to pylons and high-voltage cables doubles the risk of dying from Alzheimer’s disease and senile dementia, a study claims.

Researchers say they have found a direct link between the electromagnetic fields created by power lines and all types of dementia.

The study by doctors at Bern University’s Institute of Social and Preventative Medicine in Switzerland is the latest evidence pointing to the dangers posed by power lines.

Residence Near Power Lines and Mortality From Neurodegenerative Diseases: Longitudinal Study of the Swiss Population

Anke Huss, Adrian Spoerri, Matthias Egger, Martin Röösli and for the Swiss National Cohort Study

Correspondence to Dr. Anke Huss, Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine, University of Bern, Finkenhubelweg 11, CH-3012 Bern, Switzerland (e-mail: ahuss@ispm.unibe.ch ).

Received for publication May 5, 2008. Accepted for publication August 25, 2008.

The relation between residential magnetic field exposure from power lines and mortality from neurodegenerative conditions was analyzed among 4.7 million persons of the Swiss National Cohort (linking mortality and census data), covering the period 2000–2005. Cox proportional hazard models were used to analyze the relation of living in the proximity of 220–380 kV power lines and the risk of death from neurodegenerative diseases, with adjustment for a range of potential confounders. Overall, the adjusted hazard ratio for Alzheimer's disease in persons living within 50 m of a 220–380 kV power line was 1.24 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.80, 1.92) compared with persons who lived at a distance of 600 m or more. There was a dose-response relation with respect to years of residence in the immediate vicinity of power lines and Alzheimer's disease: Persons living at least 5 years within 50 m had an adjusted hazard ratio of 1.51 (95% CI: 0.91, 2.51), increasing to 1.78 (95% CI: 1.07, 2.96) with at least 10 years and to 2.00 (95% CI: 1.21, 3.33) with at least 15 years. The pattern was similar for senile dementia. There was little evidence for an increased risk of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, or multiple sclerosis.

Living close to a powerline can double your chance of dying from Alzheimer's Disease

A large new study from Switzerland shows a significant dose-related increase in deaths from Alzheimer's Disease (AD) in people who have lived for a number of years within 50 metres of high-voltage overhead powerlines. The results of this new study considerably raises the stakes in the EMF-health debate by showing up a serious and wide-spread public ill health problem as being closely associated with power-frequency magnetic field exposure. The cost of dementia to the UK economy is estimated to be over £17 billion (GBP) per year.

Board backs delay of power line project: Santa Rosa Valley residents want state panel to reconsider plan

Oct 29, 2008 (Ventura County Star - McClatchy-Tribune Business News via COMTEX) --

The Ventura County Board of Supervisors has lined up behind Santa Rosa Valley residents who want state officials to take a closer look at a proposed power line that would run from Moorpark to Newbury Park.

The board voted unanimously during a special meeting Tuesday night in Moorpark to send a letter to the state Public Utilities Commission, asking the PUC to demand a full environmental review of the proposed power line. It would be a nine-mile, 66-kilovolt transmission line, built about 40 feet away from an existing, larger power line.

Cancer fear spurs kindy to fight 'killer rays'

Parents say they will pull their children out of a Waitakere City kindergarten to keep them away from "killer rays" if a planned electrical substation is built next door.

Louise MacLeod is among the parents of 90 children at Titirangi Kindergarten who are protesting against Vector's plans to build a substation 30m from the centre, which is attended by children aged 3 to 5.

Mrs MacLeod, whose son attends the kindy, says many parents are planning to take their children out of the centre if the station is built because of health risks.

She pointed to a study by the stakeholder advisory group ELF-EMFs (electromagnetic frequencies) carried out last year, which looked into the effects on people of electromagnetic frequencies.

"Research has shown that high levels of radiation have links to childhood leukaemia," Mrs MacLeod said. "They [Vector] have said the electromagnetic frequencies is like having an iron on. A full substation? No.

"Nobody is going to be an idiot and put their child there."
