E. Hanover residents: Power line may risk our health

Mayor at council meeting with PSE&G: 'The more I hear, the more I worry'

BY JAKE REMALY • DAILY RECORD • August 7, 2008

EAST HANOVER -- Cancer and property-value fears were among the many concerns at a contentious and emotional township council meeting Wednesday night, where six PSE&G officials failed to alleviate residents' anxiety over the effect higher-voltage power lines and taller towers could have.

"The more I hear, the more I worry," said Mayor Joseph Pannullo, two hours into the meeting. "It's very obvious to me that there's not enough information on what we're worried about the most -- it's the cancer."

Power station meets opposition

By STEPHEN FORBES - Western Leader | Thursday, 07 August 2008

Controversial plans by Vector to build a new 33,000 volt power substation in Titirangi are being opposed by a number of residents.

The company plans to start work on the station at 515 South Titirangi Rd next year to improve the reliability and quality of the electricity supply.

Nannette Doering has helped form the Substation Action Group in a bid to block the move.

The organisation held a public meeting last week.

High on its list of concerns are fears that electro magnetic fields transmitted from the station will have detrimental health effects.

Residents balk at PSE&G's high-voltage project: They voice concerns over power line's effect on health and home values

Wednesday, August 06, 2008

BY LESLIE KWOH
Star-Ledger Staff

Town officials and residents living along the 45-mile stretch Public Service Electric & Gas has chosen for its new high-voltage power line expressed dismay yesterday with the route and lack of public participation in the selection process.

The reactions came one day after PSE&G announced it will install a 500-kilovolt line along a path that starts in Hardwick Township in Warren County and continues through 13 municipalities in Sussex and Morris counties before ending in Roseland in Essex County.

TrAIL power line fight to continue

Sierra Club threatens lawsuit

By Ken Ward Jr.
Staff writer

The fight over a $1.1 billion transmission line across northern West Virginia is far from over, despite a wholehearted endorsement of the line from the state Public Service Commission.

On Saturday, the state Sierra Club vowed to appeal the PSC decision to the state Supreme Court.

Sierra Club members said that an alternate route approved by the PSC is actually more environmentally damaging than Allegheny Energy's original proposal.

Power struggle

LEWISTON - When Joe Elie bought 15 acres on Old Webster Road last year, he dreamed of building a house. The Lewiston engineer loved the area, loved that he could live close to work but away from the hustle and bustle of the inner city.

He cleared a patch of land and planned to start building in the next few years.

Last week, he learned that Central Maine Power Co. wants to set 370 miles of high-capacity power lines between Eliot and Orrington. Some of the highest voltage lines would run through Lewiston and within 200 to 300 feet of his future house.

Suddenly, Elie said, his dream house wasn't such a dream.

Shield our students

I have recently learned the high voltage power lines going over top of our high school (South Delta Secondary) are classified as Extra High Voltage in the Standard Handbook for Electrical Engineers.

I have also learned the Canadian Human Rights Commission recognizes environmental sensitivities as potentially disabling to some people.

Among the many environmental triggers, electromagnetic radiation is recognized by the CHRC, and many others. The World Health Organization describes symptoms of electromagnetic sensitivity as “fatigue, tiredness, concentration difficulties, dizziness, nausea, heart palpitation, and digestive disturbances”.

South Delta parents oppose power lines

Tsawwassen parent Heather Colls Wahlberg doesn’t relish the prospect of B.C. Transmission Corporation power lines being “six metres” from the library at Tsawwassen’s only high school.

She told the Georgia Straight that for this reason she will withdraw her son and daughter, aged 13 and 14, respectively, from grades 8 and 9 at South Delta secondary school. As spokesperson for the fledgling group Mothers Against Power Poles, she said she is not willing to send her kids to the school this fall, “given the risks that exist”.

Power lines fight not over, residents say

Sandor Gyarmati, Delta Optimist

Power lines construction may be well underway, but that doesn't mean the fight is over.

That message was made loud and clear Wednesday evening to an incensed crowd at an emergency community meeting at the South Delta Recreation Centre.
