Doch die künstlich hergestellten Nanopartikel sind möglicherweise schwer gesundheitsschädlich. Davor warnten Stellvertreter aus Forschung und Medizin im ZDF-Wirtschaftsmagazin WISO am Montag. So sei es möglich dass es durch Anlagerungen der Kleinstteilchen beispielsweise zu Herz-Rhythmusstörungen komme, hieß es von einem Forscher. Eine Medizinerin verglich die gefährdenden Eigenschaften der Teilchen mit denen von Asbest. Die Industrie hingegen nimmt die Technik in Schutz.

Nanotechnology is happening now, and it has some dangers
If you believe the hype, the nanotechnology revolution will deliver a future of unprecedented material abundance for everyone, limitless energy, ecological sustainability, improved human health and performance, and smarter, cheaper and more efficient materials and products.
But there is another nanotechnological future that we are beginning to hear more about. This is one of toxic nanoparticle pollution, powerful new military equipment and weapons, ubiquitous surveillance devices, widening global inequities and the further concentration of corporate ownership and control across all industrial sectors. Products containing nanoparticles have already been commercialised, including sunscreens, cosmetics, car parts and silicon chips, and in the future we can expect them to also be used in food and pharmaceutical products. Given their potentially greater reactivity and toxicity, the release and accumulation of these nanoparticles in the environment also raises concerns for their impacts on other living organisms and ecological processes.
The release of nanorobots and nano-engineered organisms in the more distant future may create even more frightful scenarios. I'd suggest we pencil the term "nanopollution" into our ecological lexicons now, and let the full implications of what that means sink in later. Another concern is the development of a new range of ultra-small and smart surveillance technologies that can be used to monitor every sphere of our social and working lives.
Astonishingly - or perhaps not - very little testing of any kind has been done on the nanoparticles that have already been commercialised, and there are no regulations anywhere in the world dealing specifically with nanotechnology and nanoscale materials and products per se.

Einige Wissenschaftler träumen bereits davon, winzigste Rechner in alle Gegenstände des täglichen Lebens zu integrieren. Und nicht nur das: Auch Menschen könnten unzählige winzige Roboter in sich tragen, die die Gehirne der gesamten Menschheit vernetzen. Einer der Vordenker auf diesem Gebiet war Jan Hendrik Schön. Jan Hendrik Schön hatte einen Weg gefunden, den herkömmlichen Silizium Chip durch Transistoren aus organischer Materie zu ersetzen. Green Goo: The New Nano-Threat

First it was "gray goo," the threat of self-replicating machines populating the planet. Now an environmental think tank is raising the specter of "green goo," where biology is used to create new materials and new artificial life forms.
In its report, published on July 8, the Action Group on Erosion, Technology and Concentration, or ETC, said that the risks from green goo demand the most urgent foresight and caution. "With nanobiotech, researchers have the power to create completely new organisms that have never existed on Earth," said the ETC release accompanying its report.
t's a new one for some players. "I haven't heard of this concern anywhere else, I mean anywhere else," said Christine Peterson, president of the Foresight Institute, a nonprofit dedicated to accelerating the potential benefits and anticipating potential risks of nanotechnology. "I think it's because people are already aware of the issues of biotech. I'm not sure there's an additional issue here."
But even without an apocalyptic vision, many are wary of the threats posed by nanotechnology -- the commercial side to the science of the small. Swiss Re, the world's second largest re-insurance firm -- an insurance company for insurance companies -- warned in a May report that the unknown risks of toxicity or pollution associated with nanoparticles are unacceptable...
