WiFi Policy Statement Adopted by the Progressive Librarian's Guild in the USA

An historic moment! The Progressive Librarian's Guild adopted a policy statement on WiFi on June 16th, 2008. See http://libr.org/plg/wifiresolution.php . Most progressive change in libraries starts from PLG or SRRT (Social Responsibilities Roundtable of the American Library Association), the two most progressive groups in the library profession, until it finally reaches the citadel of power, the American Library Association, where policy is made that reaches all librarians. It's now one of the few policy statements on WiFi in the United States that we know of.

The BioInitiative report and the Benevento Resolution are referred to in this statement as the underlying justification for taking action, based on the Precautionary Principle.

A community has called for a mobile phone mast to be torn down after it emerged that 34 people living near it have caught cancer.

Worried residents fear the mast is emitting fatal doses of radiation after 14 people died and 20 other contracted the disease.

The mast was erected in a council-owned field in 1995, attached to a disused water tower, and locals said they have suffered a spate of health problems since 2001 when more antennae and dishes were added.

Wendy Baggott, 52, who lives 200 metres from the mast and leads a protest group, said her husband had contracted skin cancer twice. She said four people on her road alone have died from the disease.

New Delhi: Warning people about harmful effects of radiation from mobile phones, the Central government has asked service providers and cell phone makers to avoid promotional advertisements showing vulnerable segments like children and pregnant women using cell phones.

The electromagnetic waves emitted from mobile phones can seriously damage the tissues of the users' brain, according to recent guidelines issued by the Ministry of Telecommunication.
