When Vini Khurana, PhD, an Australian (and Mayo Clinic–trained) neurosurgeon, announced that the link between cell-phone use and cancer was irrefutable--the result of his analysis of more than 100 studies--it set off alarm bells around the world. Use a cell phone, he said, and you increase your risk of developing a malignant brain tumor by two to four times. Until recently, the majority of research indicated little or no link between cell phones and cancer (the World Health Organization and the American Cancer Society maintain that cell phones pose no threat), but several new long-term studies have cast doubt about their safety. Given that cell phones and PDAs serve as lifelines for so many people--24 percent of 10- and 11-year-olds carry them--it raises urgent questions. T-Mobile, the mobile phone giant, has been accused of “burying” a scientific report it commissioned that concluded handsets and masts contribute to cancer and genetic damage.

The report argued that officially recommended limits on radiation exposure should be cut to 1/1000th of those in force. The suggestion has not been taken up by the company or by regulators.

Sierra Club threatens lawsuit

The fight over a $1.1 billion transmission line across northern West Virginia is far from over, despite a wholehearted endorsement of the line from the state Public Service Commission.

On Saturday, the state Sierra Club vowed to appeal the PSC decision to the state Supreme Court.

Sierra Club members said that an alternate route approved by the PSC is actually more environmentally damaging than Allegheny Energy's original proposal.

LEWISTON - When Joe Elie bought 15 acres on Old Webster Road last year, he dreamed of building a house. The Lewiston engineer loved the area, loved that he could live close to work but away from the hustle and bustle of the inner city.
