Radiat. Res. 169, 28–37 (2008).

We investigated the effects of 72 h in vitro exposure of 10 human lymphocyte samples to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (800 MHz, continuous wave) on genomic instability. The lymphyocytes were exposed in a specially designed waveguide resonator at specific absorption rates (SARs) of 2.9 and 4.1 W/kg in a temperature range of 36–37°C. The induced aneuploidy of chromosomes 1, 10, 11 and 17 was determined by interphase FISH using semi-automated image analysis. We observed increased levels of aneuploidy depending on the chromosome studied as well as on the level of exposure. In chromosomes 1 and 10, there was increased aneuploidy at the higher SAR, while for chromosomes 11 and 17, the increases were observed only for the lower SAR. Multisomy (chromosomal gains) appeared to be the primary contributor to the increased aneuploidy. The effect of temperature on the level of aneuploidy was examined over the range of 33.5–40°C for 72 h with no statistically significant difference in the level of aneuploidy compared to 37°C. These findings suggest the possible existence of an athermal effect of RF radiation that causes increased levels of aneuploidy. These results contribute to the assessment of potential health risks after continuous chronic exposure to RF radiation at SARs close to the current levels set by ICNIRP guidelines.

Proteomic analysis of human lens epithelial cells exposed to microwaves

Jpn J Ophthalmol. 2007 Nov-Dec;51(6):412-6. Epub 2007 Dec 21.

Li HW, Yao K, Jin HY, Sun LX, Lu DQ, Yu YB.

Eye Center, Affiliated Second Hospital, College of Medicine, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China, xlren@zju.edu.cn.

PURPOSE: To study proteomic changes in human lens epithelial cells (HLECs) exposed to 1800-MHz Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM)-like microwaves.

METHODS: In three separate experiments, HLECs were exposed and sham-exposed (six dishes each) to 1800-MHz GSM-like radiation for 2 h. The specific absorption rates were 1.0, 2.0, or 3.5 W/kg. Immediately after radiation, the proteome was extracted from the HLECs. Immobilized pH gradient two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis(2-DE; silver staining) and PDQuest 2-DE analysis software were used to separate and analyze the proteome of exposed and sham-exposed HLECs. Four differentially expressed protein spots were selected and identified by using electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MS-MS).

RESULTS: When the protein profiles of exposed cells were compared with those of sham-exposed cells, four proteins were detected as upregulated. After analysis by ESI-MS-MS and through a database search, heat-shock protein (HSP) 70 and heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein K (hnRNP K) were determined to be upregulated in the exposed cells.

CONCLUSIONS: Two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis combined with mass spectrometry may be a powerful tool for screening potential electromagnetic-reaction protein markers. HSP70 and hnRNP K are involved in the stress reaction of HLECs exposed to microwaves. These cell responses are nonthermal effects of the electromagnetic field. Modern technology may be bugging SA insects

Tony Carnie

January 04 2008 at 11:43AM

Are cellphone masts and the electronic fuzz from radios and televisions destroying some of South Africa's valuable insect life?

While it may be too early to judge for sure, early results from a study commissioned by the Oppenheimer family suggest that some forms of electromagnetic radiation appear to have a measurable impact on ants and other creeping, crawling or flying insects.

Preliminary results of the five-year project by entomologists Max Clark and Peter Hawkes are due to be published later this year.

The two insect specialists were asked to investigate the possibility that increasing levels of electromagnetic radiation around the country could be harming the health of insect life.

We're definitely going to follow up on this when we get a chance. Our resources and available time are very thin, but we have some extremely good people here, including environmental activists who've become aware of the problems of EMFs. It's a very strange thing that the environmental lobby in general is so unaware of the issue.

Any more info on bees and insects generally is very welcome, please post any available details. I'm sure it's a "multifactorial" situation, but as with so many others, the final push into outright massive pathology comes from EMFs.

As an example, Rudolf Steiner apparently said in 1922: please observe a natural beehive, it is ROUND. He said if we continued to build square beehives, the bees would all disappear in 100 years. This timetable seems to have been speeded up by "something". The fact that wild bees are also disappearing shows that there are other factors operating. (An organic farmer here reported that wild bees, once common, have basically vanished from his fields -- he counted two wild bees over six months.)

Another story involving animals -- a friend was travelling over Christmas and visited a vet who had contacted her. He's had two dogs (German Shepherds) die of cancer, and thought a nearby cellphone mast may have been involved. A third dog was now ill. Using an Elektrosmog detector, very high radiation levels were measured throughout the house. Looking at the whole property, there was one relatively "cool" spot, in the garage. Put the dogs there, my friend said. "That's exactly where they used to spend the day", she was told. She told the vet to move, and said on her way back she would measure any new property he was looking at. On her return, he hadn't found anywhere new, but in the meantime had had to put down the third dog.

I have seen at least half a dozen dogs in my neighbourhood die of tumours in the last five years.

It's a funny thing, but I've noticed that some people respond more to stories about trees and plants showing damage than they do to human illnesses, because they think we are being "neurotic". We are a weird species.

Warnings, Warnings, Warnings IT IS TIME FOR ACTION, French ministry's warnings

http://tinyurl.com/2wges3

They governments are all covering their backs - "we told you to be careful - it's your own fault!"

That's my view.

Alasdair

I have been told by a good source that the UK HPA staff have been told to keep the lid on the mobile phone (et al) issues so that the public won't panic and cause a large problem at present to modern economies. It is someone else's problem what happens in another 10 years or so, not the current governments.

Re: Warnings, Warnings, Warnings IT IS TIME FOR ACTION, French ministry's warnings

Well, it seems that the constant warnings do have some effect (see attached EUROBAROMETER on EMF).

Re: Warnings, Warnings, Warnings IT IS TIME FOR ACTION, French ministry's warnings

Alasdair,

I agree with you, "We warned you, its your fault!" However, when the brain tumor pandemic arrives (I pray I'm wrong) there is no way that the public will not be "up in arms."

Your source really paints the true picture. " . . . public won't panic and cause a large problem at present to modern economies." Translation: We can't interfere with the telecom industry's profits.

Lloyd Morgan

Re: Warnings, Warnings, Warnings IT IS TIME FOR ACTION, French ministry's warnings

Thank you Bernhard,

I have only taken the time to read the conclusions. I believe the following paragraph catches the sense of the conclusions.

"These average figures conceal a broad difference in attitude between EU citizens who are concerned about EMF and those who are not. Of the ‘concerned’ group, more than two-thirds (69%) feel that public bodies do not act effectively in this area, compared with just half (52%) of citizens who are ‘not concerned’."

Yes, there is vague sense of concern (here in the US as well), but there is "faith" that the public health agencies will protect the public. They will only protect industry. Sadly, governments everywhere are beholdened to the corporations, in this case the Telecom industry. It is my view that the only thing that will cause change is a pandemic of brain tumors. As I said before, I pray that my sense of a looming brain tumor pandemic is wrong.
