Tumbling around in my brain this warm September afternoon are thoughts of children sleeping and playing beneath massive 500 kV power lines, and the voices of the over 1400 disillusioned and no-longer-unsuspecting Edmontonians trying to get politicians and industry representatives to hear their objections and to care enough to change course and bury the monstrous lines planned by the Heartland Transmission Project.

Many of those present at the meeting were angry and scared, and rightly so. The intensity of emotion expressed wasn't, contrary to what some have suggested, unjustified, nor was the information presented deserving of the label fear-mongering.

Dundee Council ignore Childhood Leukaemia risk for school

Dundee Council are planning to build large new primary school and nursery alongside high-voltage overhead powerlines. Despite the advice from both the UK Department of Health SAGE Process report, the Health Protection Agency and the Westminster Parliamentary Cross Party Inquiry Report (see below) into developments close to powerlines, Dundee Council rely instead on information gained from mis-interpreting an electrical industry "Fact Sheet". They have decided to build the new school and nursery right next to the powerlines when they have another site, well away from the powerlines, that would cost the same to develop and meet all their non-financial requirements.

Parties object to placement of 280-mile line across West Virginia

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The state Public Service Commission has granted 285 county commissions, communities, companies, groups and individuals the right to participate in a case that will decide whether two utilities will be allowed to build a 280-mile electric transmission line across West Virginia.

The Barbour, Braxton, Jefferson, Lewis, Tucker and Upshur county commissions were granted permission to intervene, or participate, in the case, as were the Jefferson County Board of Education, the city of Charles Town, the Sierra Club, the West Virginia Nature Conservancy, the West Virginia State Building and Construction Trades Council, the commission's own Consumer Advocate Division, and the West Virginia Energy Users Group, which represents large industrial electricity customers.
