Call your Senator now to save the Arctic Refuge

We need your help right now to save the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The future of this pristine wild land may be decided as early as tomorrow March 15, 2005. Right now the Senate version of the federal budget includes a provision to start drilling in the Arctic Refuge. Today Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) will introduce an amendment to strip the Arctic drilling provision out of the budget.

Please contact your Senator today and urge them to support the Cantwell Amendment and save the Arctic Refuge. Click here to send a free fax to your Senators now! Or if you're a registered user simply hit "reply" and then hit "send" and we'll automatically send the message below on your behalf.

Once you've sent your fax, please take a moment to call your Senators as well. Scroll down to the end of this message to find a list of phone numbers for U.S. Senators and some brief talking points for your call.

Using the budget to open the Arctic Refuge is a sneaky backdoor trick to avoid democratic debate on this critical issue. Senator Cantwell's amendment will prevent such budget trickery.

There is no time to waste; a vote on the Senate floor will take place as early as tomorrow. It's very important that your Senators hear from as many constituents as possible today. Scroll down to the end of this email to find your Senators' phone numbers!

A lot is riding on this decision. This incomparable wilderness is home to more than 250 animal species, including wolves, grizzlies, caribou, and millions of migrating birds. Unless we act now, this world-class wilderness will become a vast oil development field.

Click here now to send a fax to your Senators urging them to support the Cantwell amendment.

Once you've taken action, forward this email message to at least 10 friends urging them to contact their Senators too. It's up to us to prevent drilling and save the Arctic Refuge!

Thank you again for your help,

Dear Senator,

I strongly urge you to support the Cantwell amendment to strike language authorizing drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from the Senate budget bill. As your constituent, I urge you to vote against ANY budget measure that would allow oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The inclusion of any such measure in the budget is an unacceptable sneak attack on our precious wildlife and wild lands.

Drilling in the Arctic Refuge is not a path to energy independence or lower prices at the pump. The United States Geological Survey estimates that the Refuge has less than a single year's supply of oil that would not reach the market for at least 10 years. Meanwhile, the harm to wildlife and to our greatest wildlife refuge would be irreparable. We need to save national treasures like the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for future generations.

Sincerely,

[your name and address]
