REPORT FROM NEW YORK AND THE RNC DEMONSTRATIONS

(excerpt)

Permit obtained for A.N.S.W.E.R.'s September 2 demonstration

Sunday's huge demonstration in New York City revealed the depth of opposition both to Bush's criminal war in Iraq and its reactionary assault on civil rights and civil liberties at home. The Mayor and the police worked to stifle and limit dissent by restricting free speech rights and by creating a climate of fear and intimidation. They were assuming that people would capitulate without a struggle.

In the last few weeks in New York City, however, the opposite happened. People got mad, they spoke out, a political and legal challenge was undertaken. The political climate changed dramatically. Four days ago the Daily News reported that 71% of New Yorkers agreed that the demonstrators should have the right to have a permit in Central Park.

Now the police and government are once again trying to minimize the demonstration by using a ridiculously low crowd estimate. That’s par for the course. In the next few days there will be constant mobilizations in New York City.

Forty thousand leaflets were distributed announcing the A.N.S.W.E.R. demonstration on Thursday, September 2 at Madison Square Garden. The demonstration on Thursday, September 2 is the one event that will take place outside the Convention Hall at the very moment that Bush will be accepting the nomination. A permit has been obtained for this demonstration. If people live in the New York area they should tell friends and family that the September 2 demonstration begins at 7pm at 31st and 8th Ave. This demonstration demands Bring the Troops Home Now!, U.S. Out of Iraq!, End Colonial Occupation of Iraq, Haiti, Palestine & Everywhere!

The energy and momentum in New York is impressive. Great thanks go to all the A.N.S.W.E.R. volunteers who are working night and day doing outreach, getting out leaflets and placards, organizing transportation and all the myriad activities that are necessary to bring this important anti-war message out into the streets. While Bush may have thought that picking New York would provide a good photo-op backdrop for his nomination, this decision has become yet one more political miscalculation.

PROTEST WHEN BUSH IS CORONATED
Thursday, September 2 in NYC

At the moment George Bush is receiving his well-scripted coronation on Thursday evening, September 2, the streets around Madison Square Garden will be filled by people who stand together against the Iraq war, the colonial occupations of Haiti and Palestine, and the U.S. strategy of endless war and intervention.

The A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition received the permit for this demonstration that will begin on Thursday, September 2 at 7 pm at 31st St. and 8th Avenue.

Join in any way you can! Tell your friends and co-workers that it is important for people to be in the streets around Madison Square Garden when Bush is actually present.

This is a critical moment and the people of the United States must use every opportunity to build an antiwar movement based on solidarity with and support for those seeking self-determination as they resist the Empire.

On September 2, we will also be demonstrating against the war being waged against working people in the United States. In New York City infant mortality increased by a staggering 8% in just the last year. More than 1.5 million New Yorkers rely on donations from food pantries to feed their families - and most of the recipients are from working families. Meanwhile, the U.S. government spends $10 million every hour of every to day to occupy Iraq. As we stand in opposition to the Bush administration, we will insist on our civil liberties and rights that are being chipped away. We will demand Money for Jobs, Education, Healthcare and Housing - Not for War.

To get involved in the local activities, contact the A.N.S.W.E.R.
office in New York City at 212-533-0417 (please take note of this
number for all inquiries).

The rally begins at 2:00 pm on Thursday, September 2 at the Harlem State Office Building (163 W. 125th St. & Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd). Below are details:
