How can we fight to uphold the rule of law if we break the rules ourselves?

The ACLU believes the prisoner abuses at Abu Ghraib are a “predictable result” of American detention policies that have deliberately skirted the rule of law and flaunted American values. Americans of all political stripes and varying backgrounds have joined us in our call for the government to disclose those policies, explain why these abuses were allowed to take place, and determine who was ultimately responsible.
