Mobiles may be death sentence - Mobile phones 'more dangerous than smoking'

Widespread, unchecked use of mobile telephones could potentially pose a greater threat to human health than asbestos or smoking, according to a Canberra neurosurgeon.

Vini Khurana held a 14-month investigation into the link between heavy, long-term use of mobile telephones and the development of malignant brain tumours, reviewing more than 100 international studies on the subject.

"There is currently enough evidence and technology available to warrant industry and governments alike in taking immediate steps to reduce exposure of consumers to mobile phone related electromagnetic radiation and to make consumers clearly aware of potential dangers and how to use this technology sensibly and safely," Dr Khurana said in 69-page paper published on-line.

"It is anticipated that this danger has far broader public health ramifications than asbestos and smoking and directly concerns all of us, particularly the younger generation, including very young children."

Mobile Phones "More Dangerous Than Smoking"

In a startling report for The Independent UK, Geoffrey Lean writes about warnings regarding the use of cell phones: "Mobile phones could kill far more people than smoking or asbestos, a study by an award-winning cancer expert has concluded. He says people should avoid using them wherever possible and that governments and the mobile phone industry must take 'immediate steps' to reduce exposure to their radiation."

Irish Examiner: Phones "worse than smoking" says AU neurosurgeon

The below appeared in yesterday's (April 2, 2008) national broadsheet: IRISH EXAMINER. I've transcribed it below.

"PHONES 'WORSE THAN SMOKING'

Mobile phones could kill far more people than smoking a top Australian neurosurgeon has claimed. Vini Khurana, who conducted a 15-month 'critical review' of the link between mobile phones and malignant brain tumours, said using mobiles for more than 10 years could more than double the risk of brain cancer. He said immediate steps need to be taken to reduce people's exposure to invisible electromagnetic radiation emitted by handsets. Dr Khurana also called for a 'solid scientific study' on heavy mobile phone users for a period of at least 10-15 years. 'It is anticipated that this danger has far broader public health ramifications than asbetos and smoking, and directly concerns all of us, particularly the younger generation, including very young children,' said Dr Khurana in a research paper published on brain-surgery.us There are three billion mobile phones globally and the number is growing with users as young as three years of age. Mobile phone radiation could heat the side of the head or potentially thermoelectrically interact with the brain, he said. Dr Khurana, specialist neurosurgeon at the Canberra Hospital and an associate professor of neurosurgery at the Australian National University, said there had been increased reports of brain tumours associated with heavy and prolonged mobile phone use. He said tumours are particularly evident on the same side as the person's 'preferred ear' for making calls.

Chris Althaus chief executive of the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association, rejected Dr Khurana's conclusions, saying handsets were built to strict guidelines and other research failed to conclude adverse affects of mobile phone use. But the WHO said there were 'gaps in knowledge' that required further research. Dr Khurana, who since 1994 has received 14 awards, said the time between the commencement of regular mobile phone use to the diagnosis of a malignant brain tumour may be 10-20 years. 'In the years 2008-2012, we will have reached the appropriate length of follow-up time [since first mobile phone use in the 1980s] to begin to definitively observe the impact of this global technology on brain tumour incidence rates,' he said".
